I have NEVER had so many compliments on my hair after a cut and color! I came in after I was not able to make an appointment I had with my usual salon and neeeeeeded to get my hair done for a wedding the next weekend. The salon itself is very comfortable; it's on the second story of a building in Old Town with exposed brick and hardwood floors. I was booked with Megan for a full highlight and color. I showed Megan a picture of the color I wanted, and she explained to me how it would look on my hair and how long it would take to get me there. While I waited for my color to process, I enjoyed a glass of red wine (perfect! I had come right after work). For my haircut, I told her that I am growing my hair out; she cut the perfect amount off and made great suggestions for ways to make my cut more stylish. Megan was so friendly and approachable, and most importantly, she listened carefully to everything I said. A few days after my haircut, I received a handwritten thank you letter in the mail from Megan saying that she hoped I liked my new hair and was excited to see me again soon! She included two certificates for a facial and I think 10 or 20% off of my next hair appointment. I am excited to go back, and I would recommend the salon to all! read more

Last Sunday I decided to go a little bit lighter...in my bathroom with some box dye. It was semi disastrous but since I work from home I figured I could get away with waiting a week before getting it fixed, as I didn't want to fry my hair. Two days later, I saw that Swerve was offering a discounted gift certificate on Gilt, so I bought one and made an appointment for a week later with Jennifer for some highlights to remedy my Garfield-the-cat colored roots. Lets cut to the point: The girl is a miracle worker. After working her magic with highlights, lowlights and a deep conditioning treatment, not only do I feel like I can be seen in public without a hat on...I want to run up and down the street and show off my hair! And after salon hopping for the better part of my four and a half years in Chicago, I can say that I will DEFINITELY be back. This review is for Brooke who gave me a facial last night. Brooke was AMAZING! She not only have me an amazing facial, but she also gave me a foot massage and wrapped them in hot towels. She also gave me a shoulder / decolletage massage while I had a mask on my face and I was in heaven. I would highly suggest Brooke! My only complaint is that the facial room is located where everyone checks in and buys product, so you could hear quite a bit of noise. I used to go to Swerve Salon years back when it was at its previous location in Old Town. I decided to give it another try when the salon moved to the new location down the street. However, the recent experiences there were highly negative. On July 8th, I was faced with unprofessional and rude conduct of the manager Lisa. I posted an unfavorable review about this experience and Lisa's lack of customer relationship skills. I reached out to Amy F., the salon owner, the same day via e-mail asking for her attention to my concerns and response. I never received a response from Amy or anyone else from the salon. Instead, Yelp informed me that they were approached to remove my 1-star review I had posted at the time. There are probably some people who have positive experiences at this salon but others, such as myself, don't. It makes me question the validity of the overall positive rating of this salon if the management approaches Yelp to have negative reviews removed instead of addressing the negative experiences with affected clients. read more

I usually get my hair done elsewhere, but I was in the city visiting and it had been TOO long since I had seen the inside of any salon and my best friend recommended this one. FABULOUS. I have major "new and unknown salon" anxiety, but I was totally at ease here. It has a fun little Old Town, upstairs location and is stylish and well-appointed inside. I had a morning appointment, so I was not offered the already-mentioned glass of wine (jealous!), through they did manage to whip me up some coffee. My stylist, Stacy, was great! I have naturally curly hair and like to do fun reds for color and she excelled at both. I basically gave her free rein to do what she does best and my hair turned out really well. She even double-checked with me once I saw the color and offered to redo or change anything I didn't like (though I loved it and we didn't change a thing)! Price-wise, I usually have few boundaries and am willing to pay quite a bit for my hair to look good, though I know not everyone does! In that case, check out the website because they have lots of coupons for new clients. Hi, I'm B and I have serious anxiety about cutting my hair. Now that we got that out of the way I can tell you about my most recent experience at Swerve; it was fabulous. When you walk into this place, you're immediately greeted by smiling faces--I'm a huge fan of great customer service. Then asked if I would like anything to drink. So awesome! Promptly am asked who I am and who I am there to see and asked to wait for Dana. Now a little back story here, I'm in to have something drastic done. I have finally told myself long enough that I can donate my hair, this means at least 8 inches is coming off. This is a huge thing, I am losing a part of me. My hair, it goes everywhere with me, it's not like a purse I can switch out when I'm bored with it. Dana is super patient with me, immediately I am at ease and letting her do what she thinks is going to be perfect. I've had the pleasure of having Dana cut my hair before but never anything this drastic. Every step, every suggestion and any comments about my preference were taken into consideration and she worked some serious magic. 9 inches later and one fried out blow dryer (I have a lot of hair) I walked out feeling absolutely fantastic. I have hair that moves and still has length to it so I can still do fun things with it! I truly loved every minute of my appointment from the second I walked in to the moment I walked out that door I had a smile on my face. I was recently chatting with my hair stylist, Nicole at Swerve about my insanely frizzy hair and she suggested I try out a treatment smoothing treatment. At first, I must admit, I was terrified. Having never treated or dyed my hair I was nervous to add any chemical that might damage it. Nicole assured me that it was a temporary, safe product that lasts for a few months. I did some research and learned that some treatments leave your hair sticky, and slicked to the head after the first few days (mainly because you cannot wash your hair). Honestly, I wash my hair ONLY when it is necessary (3-5 days or after an intense workout), but great hair is my "thing". There is NO way I could walk around the city with slicked hair for three days. That was not happening. I trust Nicole, and This treatment seemed different so I decided to go ahead and test it out! The entire treatment lasts about 2 hours, which is a little long but Nicole is a delight to talk to. It defiantly didn't feel like two hours! Plus they offer wine!! At the end of the treatment, I honestly I could not believe how much longer, silkier, and "tame" my hair looked! It was a miracle!! It has been four days since my treatment and I have only washed my hair once. After the first wash, I noticed it was much easier to style (I like to loosely curl the ends and back comb the top for some extra volume). The curl held instantly and I was able to style it exactly how I wanted, but in a shorter amount of time and with significantly less hair spray (my secret weapon). Overall, I would recommend this treatment to anyone with frizzy/hard-to-tame hair. It is worth every penny and then some! :) read more

I finally found the stylist of my dreams...in Massachusetts, where we used to live. We moved to Chicago and I despaired of finding someone else who can make my hair look so great, AND be a nice person that I don't mind hanging out with for a couple of hours while my hair is done. My former stylist was at a Redken salon as well, and she gave me my color formula to give my new Chicago stylist something to work from. Joe made my hair look AMAZING. Just, amazing. The cut was perfect, I didn't need much but he thinned it out and made it look like I had an actual "style" again. And the color? Oh, the color. He suggested a few strategic caramel highlights, just to try (no charge!), to which I said (after two glasses of wine), "Sure, why not!" Well, I'm happy I did, and the last time I went back I was glad to pay for more, in addition to my single-process. The conditioning treatment also made a clear difference in the health of my hair (at least for a week or so), and I continue to do that as well. Joe is fun, sweet, and knows a LOT about color and cut. He is both a great listener and not afraid to suggest new ideas to his customers that will make them look FABULOUS. When I called to schedule an appt on Thursday., they were able to fit me right in for the next day (Friday). My services were performed by Jess. She is amazing! Asked me questions about my current skin regimen, products I use, and etc. She made me feel very comfortable and excited at the same time. It was my first facial ever, and it was memorable. I left there feeling like a million bucks, my skin was on point! My confidence level went up 100x. My skin feels and look amazing. The neck massage was a plus. The facials from Tristen are amazing! I have always struggled with hormonal acne and as a result have experienced some skin discoloration and scarring. Seeing Tristen regularly for facials has allowed for significant improvements. I rarely have a breakout anymore and my skin tone is even and bright. I can even go makeup-less without feeling self conscious (something that wasn't imaginable for me a few years ago). She is super knowledgeable and has helped me establish a regimen for home so I can keep up on my skincare in between my facials. I started going to Jennifer a little over a year ago. My hair was in bad shape. I had previously been getting hilites as well as lightening my base color. The hair was fried! I explained to Jennifer that I was trying to grow my hair out as well as keep it blond. Not an easy task for hair that is already damaged. She really knows what she's doing! I get hilites however, she doesn't do my whole head every time. This helps with the condition of my hair. We always do a trim. She knows the definition of trim!!! We also do a Redken Chemistry conditioning treatment, which i think helps a lot. Everyone has always been nice and upbeat every time I've gone. The salon space is beautiful. Very comfortable. They always play great music. My services, which include hilites, haircut, conditioning treatment, toner, and blowdry/flat iron add up to $200 (without tip). It's worth every penny. Have you EVER left a salon looking worse than how you came in? First time for everything I guess! So I got a recommendation from a friend to see Rebecca for a root touch up. I had about an inch of grow out. The rest of my hair was already blonde from before. So I wanted my roots touched up and a toner all over. Pretty easy right? My appt was at 2:45, I didn't leave until 7PM!!!! I feel like I went in to get a manicure and I ended up getting a boob job instead... but in a negative way.. get it? Anyways, Rebecca was sweet, no complaints there at all. We talked about what I wanted, I showed her pics, what I wanted what I didn't want... She foiled all over, washed it out and I WAS ORANGE! ORANGE!! I was like umm this is orange.. you're going to fix this right? So she began to tell me how what I wanted was unrealistic and it takes time, blah blah. no. It's a root touch up. So then she asked me if I wanted to tone my hair all over a dark blonde color. I said no way! I didn't come in here with blonde hair to go in a reverse to cover up your mistake. Even a stylist next to me told her guest that toners are to cover up mistakes a lot of times. So then she bleached me all over..still yellow..bleached me again and put me under the dryer. burning like hell.. ok done, back to the sink with a toner. I sit down. My hair is crunchy and yellow and orange and oh my GOD! I didn't even want her to dry it, I just wanted to leave. Then they tried charging me $210 because they added a color correction... excuse me? You're charging me for your mistake? you wanted me to leave with orange hair?? No way. So they knocked the price to $160. By then Rebecca was annoyed and what really annoyed me was you could feel ans sense like the manager or whoever she was lurking around. It was so uncomfortable. I called today and spoke to Lisa and she was already well aware of what happened but she was crazy RUDE on the phone. I cannot believe someone like that is a manager of a salon. She has to be friends with the owner in order to feel like she has the right to talk to people that way. She said that she doesn't like that I'm insinuating that they are doing shady things and that I'm questioning their protocol..... Yea umm if someone leaves with orange/yellow hair they will question you. She was so rude. Thankfully they are giving me a full refund because I had to go and get it fixed the next day. I literally looked like slim shady in his peroxide days. It's funny how Lisa was so rude on the phone and saying I'm being defensive when she reply's in such a snarky way to all of the negative reviews on here trying to defend what they are doing and acting like Swerve can do no wrong. I had been eyeing the ombre trend for sometime when I finally decided to cheat on my current salon and take a trip to see Amy at Swerve. My sister has been going to Amy for sometime and always has fabulous color (Amy even did her wedding and did a phenomenal job on all of us for the big day). I brought in pictures of what I was looking for (I'm a brunette and am loving the carmel/blonde highlights at the bottom-look) and told Amy what I was going for. And about an hour or so later...I had fabulous ombre looking hair that would rival many of those supermodels out there rocking the same look. Swerve is a great salon made even better by Amy. She is fun, personable and really listens to what you want and gives honest feedback as well. I gave 4 stars due to the price ($131 for the color, which I thought wasn't really full highlights...but since I'm not a stylist...maybe it was). And contrary to the Yelp post below, I did get a free blowout since it was my first time getting a service. Overall, a really great salon experience and I received a handwritten thank you note from Amy with a 40% off coupon for a haircut. I wish I'd had a great experience at Swerve. It is so convenient for me, just up the street from my apartment. After reading all the yelp reviews, I was excited to give it a try. I made an appointment and was randomly assigned to Mandi. I was there for a deep conditioning treatment and a haircut. The other salons I've been to do the deep conditioning treatment differently - they add the conditioner after shampooing, then they covered the hair with a cap or wrap or something and you sit under the dryer to heat up the conditioner and let it work it's magic. At Swerve, I think I just paid an extra $18 for them to use a different brand of conditioner, that was in my hair for 3.5 seconds before being rinsed out. For the cut, I wanted a trim and bangs, and to be specific I brought several pictures of a well-known celebrity to clarify exactly how I wanted it to look. Mandi started the cut by having me stand, and trimming my hair when it was wet. Then, she had me sit in the chair and dried my hair before continuing to cut it AFTER it was dry. She said something about internal layers to give it more shape. She also didn't want to give me the bangs like the celebrity pics, since she said my hair was too curly, so I just ended up with a really awkward short layer toward the front, about the length of my chin. This fell short of the mark, and I've never had split ends so quickly after a haircut. Bummer, since I had high hopes for this place, but I will not be back. read more
