Came here for the music and left happy, which is honestly the only metric that matters for a spot like this. The live band was great, the vibe was lively, and people were actually dancing instead of just sitting around pretending they're "listening." Food was good, service was easygoing, and the best part: zero pressure. They have a minimum spend, but they don't play games with it. Hit the minimum however you want, drinks or food, your choice. Other places love to force both, which is basically a tax on having fun. Not here. Why not 5 stars? The place is a bit dated. Our booth was literally held up with tape and the cushion situation was... let's call it "vintage springs." I heard they're planning a remodel, and if that happens, this becomes an easy 5. 11/7/25 - We came here late in the evening on a Friday night. We were looking for a jazz/swing club where we could listen to live music AND dance. Most of the clubs we saw were more for eating/drinking while listening to music but didn't offer the dancing component. If you want to just listen to the music while enjoying your food/drink then sitting at the bar is free. To sit in the back area where the band and dancing is, there is a $15 cover fee. We didn't order any food and my friend did order some drinks but I'm not much of a drinker so I can't comment on that. We enjoyed the music and watching the regulars dance. A couple regulars were very nice and brought us out onto the dance floor to show us some simple moves! Unfortunately this place is closing at the end of December. It's really sad that it is going away as the regulars' described it as one of the places in the city with a dance floor where you can actually dance to the live jazz/swing music. If you are in the area before they close and want to spend some time away from the busy city definitely stop by here! read more

Came here for a pre show bite. Got their $60 price fix which I thought was a great deal. We sat at the bar because we didn't want to pay the $15 pp cover charge to sit in the back at a table to listen and watch the jazz show. Bartender was nice, food was good, not great, but to be expected. My husband and I got the soup, hanger steak and brownie for dessert. We were in and out in 50 minutes because we rushed them along so we could make our show and they were super accommodating and nice about it. Didn't need a reservation either! Probably wouldn't come back, not because we didn't like it, but because jazz honestly isn't my thing and going for the food is just ehh. If you're into a chic, classic club vibe with awesome talent though, def can't recommend enough! read more

Walking down "Restaurant Row", the host saw us looking at menus and convinced us to stop in. It's free to sit at the bar but you have to pay a cover to go into the back room where the live music is. You can still hear the music and you have a small TV screen to watch. The bartender was friendly and the drinks were ok. Happy hour was buy 1 full price drink, get a free house wine or $8 beer. We ordered some appetizers throughout the night and they were all average at best. The wings were probably our favorite as they fell off the bone so easily. The Bruschetta was pretty good as well but sharing 3 pieces of bread is annoying. The crab cake and shrimp cocktail were pretty fishy and not amazing. The calamari just seemed like typical frozen calamari rings. Overall, cool old dive bar atmosphere with live music. Drinks are better than the food and service was average. read more

Made a reservation here for a birthday dinner and saw that they had swing lessons prior to the jazz shows so thought it would be a great experience to check out. The host at the front was very pleasant and friendly! Walked us through to our table which was located to the left of the stage. Our waiter was very nice as well, he gave us some food highlights. Before the swing class he made sure to let us know that it was starting and gave us the option of waiting to have the entrees served after the swing lessons were over so it wouldn't be cold. Paolo who was the instructor was so patient and fun ! I think it was a 15-20 minute class in front of the stage. The live band even popped in and played a great swing song to practice too! We ordered jazzy fries and calamari for appetizers, they were very good and fresh. For entrees we picked the braised beef ribs and the maple pork chop. The meat was very tender and practically fell off the bone! The show that we caught was George Gee Swing Orchestra. They were amazing and the speaker was very presentable. My wife and I went to this place on a NYC overnight trip for our 9th anniversary. We sat in a section of the restaurant where we could hear the music but not see the performers (there is an extra charge to be in the same room as the singer). I had the filet and my wife had two vegetarian appetizers. The food was good and the atmosphere was nice. It's was not crowded at all at 6pm on a Saturday night. If you missed the Sadie Hawkins dance growing up, don't worry! This place will transport you there. It has a very old-fashioned vibe, from the music to the atmosphere; you might even expect to see characters like Archie Bunker and Gloria hanging out here. My mussels were quite bland, prompting me to request every condiment available in the kitchen to add some flavor. The upside is you have the option to skip the nostalgic atmosphere and ignore the cruise ship-style performances. Many patrons, including myself, preferred sitting away from the live band in the front area, simply enjoying the company we were with. This place is puzzling, but it definitely caters to a specific taste! We weren't fond of the fact that a cover charge was required to sit close to the live entertainment. It seemed unnecessary since the band could be heard from any table. The issue arose when the wait staff focused on that specific section, making it challenging to get their attention. My boyfriend and I came here to see Bill Malchow which was fantastic, the entire band is extremely talented and the pianist cracked some good jokes. This venue is not 21+ and "welcomes" children. Do not bring your children here. The level of intoxication that some of the staff exudes is far from a safe environment for kids, to the point that the children in the audience expressed their discomfort and staff completely disregarded it. It is a shame because the ambiance is great, the dance floor is a perk, and the band was incredible. If they are going to allow staff to indulge they should make it a 21+ establishment. We've been going to Don't Tell Mama, a few doors down from Swing 46, for years, but we had never been to Swing 46. We heard about it from a couple from the UK while waiting to get into another restaurant with music. The next night we went to Swing 46 and we lucked out. It was great. We went to the early show specifically to hear Janice Friedman (on piano) and her band (bass player, drummer, and trumpet player) and they did not disappoint, the music was awesome. Happy Hour Review: Jonathan, Marvita & Michelle, made my impromptu visit extremely enjoyable. I was on my way to another establishment & heard the jazz music playing that drew me in. Michelle, the high spirited Hostess welcomed me with open arms as I was hesitant due to wearing my sneakers. Afterthought...it's NYC, almost everyone is in sneakers. Jonathan, the hospitable Gent working the Bar & other places throughout this renaissance style Jazz Supper Club, kindly extended more welcoming vibes my way. Amongst the BOGO Happy Hour glasses of wine, he sold me on the Vegan Lasagna, which was savorily delicious. Along my Veganism journey, I come to really appreciate the kitchen's creativity in replicating cheeses, creams, & purées alike. The portion was huge which provided me enough for a late night snack in my hotel room. Halfway through my delightful meal with the perfect jazz melodies overhead, Marvita, the other Bartender arrived & continued the engaging service Team Swing 46 is all about. Not only is she a well versed Mixologist sharing libations insight, her interaction was just as pleasant & neighborly. The perfect top off was not the inexpensive Happy Hour prices & top notch service. It was the friendly patrons at the bar socializing with you as if you're a local. I didn't stay late enough to watch the live band which starts at 9P & is staged in the back of the dinner club. Yet, most definitely will be back upon my return visit to NYC. You have to come here for the jazz not the drinks. It was $15 to go into the room where the music was live - we sat at the bar on the booth wall seats for no charge. The drinks were weak, we had bourbon sours, a Manhattan, and a grey goose with club soda. Tried to order 4 choices of different red wines but they had none of them in stock/ I am not into Yellow Tale. We sent back the the drinks and the staff was quick to make another drink. We stayed here for about hour and 15 minutes and stayed only because the music was great! The place smelled of cigarettes even though nobody was smoking. It had the feel of a hole in wall with great performers and plenty of room to dance!!! Seems like a great place for a large group. If you sit at the bar they have a small tv on wall for you to view the band- the tv does not offer a clear picture. Go for the music! Be friendly with the staff and you will have fun. read more

She took her time to find out what we liked and helped make suggestions. We also heard her singing while working and her voice was so beautiful she definitely should sing with the band. Looking for a pre show dinner in NYC and found this cute bar/restaurant. We sat up front since we weren't staying for the music and to avoid cover charge. Food was good. Steak was perfectly cooked. I should have taken a photo but I was too hungry. Thanks to Yelp we had a free dessert. Hit fudge brownie was delicious. Try this place next time you're in the theater district. read more

We made a reservation off of the recommendation of someone on the free tours by foot Facebook page. Nowhere did it mention that there is a $20/pp fee to just sit down. The drinks had NO to minimal alcohol for $20/drink. The food is beyond subpar for being in Hell's Kitchen. 2 appetizers and 4 drinks cost $225... no thank you. What a fun place! My BF and I stayed in NY this weekend and decided to stop in after dinner one night on a Saturday. They have a jazz band playing 5:30-8:30 and then a Swing band from 9pm-1am. We sat at the bar and ordered a few drinks around 9pm to enjoy the music. We got Vodka Lemonades and the EC manhattan, both were great!! Our bar tender Shanonlee (Shanley? I dont remember) was very nice!! They were very busy at the bar but we're still served quickly and kindly. We decided to dance to one song not knowing that it was 15$ to be in the main room and dance. Luckily they didn't charge us because we had no idea but for anyone wanting to dance, make sure you know how much cover is for the night if you do choose to dance on the dance floor. Dropped in for the live jazz show and free group swing dance lesson. I am very glad to see that the new management (Stephen) is just as welcoming as the old. There is a $15 for admission to the dining area (added to your bill) where the show and dance lessons are though so technically not that free lol. Otherwise you can just hang back in the bar area and listen to the good music. If you sit at the bar you can see a distant but obstructed view of the stage. There is plentiful sitting throughout the restaurant, and it is dimly lit with a reddish overtone. A full bar and waitress service though the drinks aint cheap, if you missed the happy hour that ends by 8pm before the show kicks in around 9pm, but the performance makes up for it. A stella for example will run you $8, cocktails are around $15+. Good for a date or dinner with friends. I still highly recommend this spot if you are a Jazz fan. read more

Only reason I'm saying anything is that I wish they were more hard core about checking vaccination status with folks. Oof this place was baaad. From terrible food to ridiculous prices to the really poor service, this was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had living in NYC. On top of all that, they charged a music fee of $10 per head. Of which they never mentioned the three times we talked about being seated. No signage nor was it printed on menu. When we talked to the hostess about the fee, she behaved so entitled and arrogant talking about how every jazz club charges and something about "being in NYC 29 years" etc etc. She wasn't dealing with tourists here and this establishment didn't represent any NYC I know. I'm confident to say that every restaurant I've been to, across all boroughs, takes their service and reputation much more seriously than swing 46. Listen we are not divas. We don't mind paying if we know up what we're getting into (or "out to" as we sat in their outdoor parklet) but to surprise us with an extra $60 on the bill after the piss-poor food, the amateur service and the way the hostess/manager responded... well it didn't just feel like a scam and a money grab, it was a scam and money grab. We're good with a dump that has good food at higher prices. We're good with a dump with average food but good service. We're good with okay food but good music or vibe. Etc etc But we are not good with bad food, bad service, bad attitudes, high prices and average music that we had to unknowingly pay for. Trying to see if my friends got a picture of the $16 "platter" of quesadillas - it was hilarious how pathetic those four sad small triangles laid limp on the plate We knew we werent getting top notch when we sat down (even tho ms manager said this place is "usually high class" lol), but this place came in wayyyy worse than our very low expectations. Don't be drawn in by the dancing 60 year olds and music, this place is a scam that should have gone out of business in the 90s. The only way this place remains open is it's proximity to hells kitchen and theatre district. Classic place to get food and drinks while listening to old-timey swing bands. There's even a novice swing dance lesson (East Coast Swing, to be specific) in the evenings at some point. If you're lucky, some Lindy Hop dancers will drop by and dance along to the live band. Overall, a lovely venue with a nice ambiance. It can get a bit touristy sometimes, depending on who shows up. We hosted a birthday party with 13 people in attendance. The bands were terrific, the food was spot on and the service was very attentive. John, the owner saw to it that everything we asked for (we had a couple of special requests) was delivered as promised. I see people complaining about the music charge. That seems crazy. In the course of the evening there were two big bands (10-12 musicians in each) plus a singer. They are all professionals and the quality of the music couldn't be better. We had a great time here Wednesday with Stan Rubin big band, 16 pieces and two singers. Good drinks, adequate wine selection. The shrimp cocktail and scallops entree were VG. They played mostly big band favorites. Really big sound. A fellow from a dance studio gave swing lessons at the break. It looked like some really learned to dance. The 'small band' was playing when we arrived, the big band started at 8:30. Very friendly place with a band that would have filled a large night club many years ago. Will definitely return. November 14, 2019: We returned! On a Thursday night it was Stephen Ostrano 21 piece band with singers. We got a front table following a theater show. It was great. We loved it.
