When I moved to New York, I envisioned that Harlem and the Village would be full of these types of places--evening jazz/dinner clubs. Well, I think some old 1970's-era laws killed off a lot of these places, and then more went bust after 9-11 and Covid (rest in peace Trumpets in Montclaire, NJ). But there's still Swing-46...on 46th street in Manhattan--and it is GREAT. Classic jazz place, with great live swing music, dance floor, short dancing lessons, and decent food. And, it is affordably priced. It's like a classic, old New York place out of my imagination and the movies. If you love swing, rag, & bluesy jazz, you must go and bring your friends. We had a great time here Wednesday with Stan Rubin big band, 16 pieces and two singers. Good drinks, adequate wine selection. The shrimp cocktail and scallops entree were VG. They played mostly big band favorites. Really big sound. A fellow from a dance studio gave swing lessons at the break. It looked like some really learned to dance. The 'small band' was playing when we arrived, the big band started at 8:30. Very friendly place with a band that would have filled a large night club many years ago. Will definitely return. This place is 10 stars all day! We came here many years ago and loved it and on our recent trip to NY we, by chance, stumbled on it while en route to another restaurant. We immediately cancelled our other plans and opted to go here instead. If you want to sit in the area where the band plays and the dance floor is, there is a very reasonable $20 per person charge. When you consider how many musicians there are and how long they play for, I am astonished at some of other reviews complaining about the cover. It is so reasonable for the quality of the entertainment. There is an option to sit in another part to have dinner and drinks with no cover, although you can still enjoy the band. We loved sitting facing the stage and watching the band and happily paid the charge. Many of the diners enjoyed the dance floor and the music was sensational. Our server was excellent and the food was delicious. We had the Bruschetta, the Pasta Orecchiette and the Rigatoni with Shrimp which were excellent. I am a wine drinker so I didn't sample the cocktails! The atmosphere is so romantic, the staff were friendly and really accommodating. A special thanks to the lovely host who greeted us a the front door! Honestly if you don't do anything else in NYC - do this!! It is a first class experience in every way. read more

Came here on a date. This was always a spot on restaurant row that I had my eye on. For those who don't know, restaurant row is a strip of restaurants on 46th street between 9th and 8th Avenue. The street is closed off because the restaurants have seating outdoors (indoors too.) I believe this is also the only spot on restaurant row with live music. I loved their ambiance and service however, the food did not live up to my expectations, it wasn't bad but just okay. I guess I was just expecting more. That being said I did enjoy myself. read more

I had a great time at Swing 46! The staff was very friendly and made us feel very welcome when we arrived. They explained there would be entertainment during dinner and there would be a $10 cover charge. They were kind enough to offer the option to have dinner in the bar where we could still hear the music. We chose to sit in the main dining room and it was worth every penny! The place kind of has a vintage speakeasy feel with dark wood and a lot of red. Many patrons came dressed in 40's and knew how to dance, which really made it fun. The Big Band and it's Conductor were amazing. They were talented and offered top notch entertainment. They had a singer join them for a bit which was a great surprise. The menu was a bit limited but everything we ordered was tasty. Nice size portions and attentive service made our dinner even better. A strange thing happened while we were there. A couple right behind me got into an argument and the man ended up throwing his glass at the woman! They were screaming over the band, the glass cut her face, the broken glass flew everywhere, the Manager came over and asked if she was ok and left! Whaaat?!?! The guy was not asked to leave?!?! The woman got up and left and the man was crawling all over the floor looking for his phone he lost. I think Management should have asked them both to leave at the beginning of the argument since they were so disrespectful of the entertainers and the other customers. Then, at the very least, kick the animal out when he assaulted his date! The bottom line - I would go back again if I'm in the neighborhood. A real shame. We were three people last week, with the idea of ​​having a drink and listening to some music. Unfortunately we had our worst experience in New York. Let me tell you: The place is a nice place with a bar at the entrance and a main room at the back where there is a stage. The group that performed that day was not a jazz group, it was a dance music group that did versions of well-known songs and although it was not the type of music we were looking for, I imagine that the problem was ours for not informing us of who was performing that day. However, they were a lively group and they did not do badly, but as we sat down at the table a series of problems began to occur that do not speak very well of this place. 1) They charge $20 per person to listen to the show in the main room. (Total 60$) Honestly, from what we saw, it seems very expensive, but I understand that we are in New York and we consider it as an entry price. 2) They demand a minimum consumption of $35 per diner, something completely illegal. 3) The food theme is worth mentioning. We ordered a burrata salad, which included literally 4 small pieces of dry mozzarella and 4 pieces of tomato at the great price of $18 (you can see the photos in other comments). Completely embarrassing. We also ordered a lousy cheese and tomato salad for another $18 and rock-hard squid for $20. One of the waiters as soon as we entered asked us where we came from and when we told him that we came from Spain he stopped serving us water and serving us. From the beginning he did not give us a good feeling. Once we ate our dishes badly we had to order 3 cocktails to be able to reach the famous minimum consumption. When tasting them, two of them tasted bad, bitter, as if they were cut or spoiled. At this point another more pleasant waiter arrived and told us, that there had been a problem with our cocktails, and took them away, replacing them with new ones. We appreciate it. Our "dear" waiter came back and told us, "they weren't bad either, it's okay, you could have drunk them" We couldn't enjoy the place, nor the music because of the bad atmosphere that had been generated and when we decided to leave, it was time to count. The bill was $210. Yes $210, for a plate of burrata, a plate of salad, some calamari and 3 cocktails. In the account they included a supplement of $7 for paying with a card, a tip of $30 and other additions and taxes that American places usually have. I politely got up and told the waiter that I was sorry to tell him that it was the worst place he had eaten in the United States, and the most expensive by far. I also told him that he did not understand why they charged a supplement for paying by card and that although he was going to pay it, he did not agree to pay a tip for such a lousy and poor quality service. I have to say that the owner, a blonde woman who seemed like a nice person, was there without saying anything in the middle of the argument. The upset waiter said that he took all those charges off our bill and left the bill at $170, which is still an absolutely high price for the quality we had received. However we paid the bill and when we left we realized that we had been charged 2 bills, one of 170% and another of 37$. As soon as we saw it, we went back to claim it and the waiters, in a very rude manner, told us that they had requested the refund, that in a few days it would be in our bank. That refund never came. In short, very bad luck to fall into a place like this, with poor quality food, at completely exorbitant prices and with a shameful waiter who deceived us from the first moment. If you want to listen to good music in a pleasant atmosphere, New York has plenty of places to do it, but I don't recommend that you come here. And still, if any of you decide to go over there, please tell our waiter to make the most of the money he stole from us. read more

I mean where do I begin? October 24th at Truffles my life was changed. The reason for attending Truffles was for a team outing for work. I am not really sure what I was expecting besides I knew I was gonna eat and drink. I had the Pat LaFrieda steak because when Pat LaFrieda is on the menu YOU ORDER IT. I got it Medium and it came out perfect. There was also salmon, chicken, and other things on the menu as well. They have an option of unlimited drinks for a extra $25 which is great deal. The show was great and the cast is really talented with amazing set of pipes on them. This is definitely an interactive show so leaving the boring ppl at home. We were thrilled to find a jazz supper club near our hotel. The fact that it also had a three course priz fixe menu was a great selling point. It is located in the busy restaurant row off of Broadway, and it even sports a small dance floor. Our reservation was for 6:30 pm, and we were greeted, but it seemed like we were too early. Another couple came in right after us, and we all checked coats (it was raining miserably when we arrived). We were seated at a long booth that had seen better days. We were told about happy hour - two for one cocktails, but per person. No big deal - we ended up ordering 4 cocktails. We had to ask about the prix fixe menu, as it was not given to us. The other couple that we entered with thanked us, as they had been drawn in for the same reason. We had to order all three courses at once - kind of a draw back, as I usually pick my dessert based on how my meal went. I chose the caprese salad, roast chicken, and raspberry sorbet. My husband ordered the green salad, grilled salmon, and brownie with whipped cream. Both of our salads were great! My mozzarella and tomato was super fresh, and the balsamic was the perfect amount. My husband's salad was refreshing and tasty. When the entrees were presented, I was worried about my chicken, and rightfully so. The leg was wonderfully moist, but the breast was painfully dry. Really sad. My husband's salmon was divine!!! The skin was perfectly crispy while the fish was moist and flavorful. The desserts were then served. Mine was super sweet, and not tart like most sorbets. My husband's brownie was insanely rich. We mixed the two for a better dish, but still too sweet. The music is the star! Big band with decent singing and a dance floor. And we danced! Oh, and what evening would be complete without a marriage proposal that was really sweet. She said yes!!! Great for celebrating, groups, or busting a move with friends or a date! I'm not a swing dancer (per se) but I enjoyed live music and couldn't resist attempt to jive! My friends and I danced a few songs, which were live on a tv for the mediumish crowd as well as in a dance floor. The music was fabulous and jazzy, even though my dancing didn't do it justice. We had the pleasure of hearing Jazz singer Vanessa Trouble and her Red Hit band which was fantastic! Steve our server was super accommodating and happy to be there. In between sets they had a wonderful teacher give a swing dance lesson. This is a place where people come to dance. The food is very good. We had almond crusted calamari and coconut shrimp which was very fresh. We had the angus steak which was a large portion and the roasted half chicken. All the entrees came with two sides. It was exactly what we wanted. A nice cozy intimate space with a live band! We came on a Monday and the Swing-a-Delic! Were playing! It was AMAZING. the food was great! We had wine. It was a perfect night. There was a Swing dance teacher teaching whoever wanted to learn! It was fun watching everyone learn their steps. The staff were friendly. We were told we would have to pay a $15 charge per person for watching the band play. Overall this was exactly what we expected and we loved it! We had a great time I highly recommend it! Paying the extra $15 to have a seat in the room with the performers is worth it. There's a room with a TV to watch the performers if you don't want to pay. The food, the food was delicious!! I'm a swing newbie so I can't by to check out the orchestra. Feeling health conscious I planned to nibble on grilled asparagus with goat cheese. Feeling indulgent I also ordered up fried calamari. The entertainment was excellent. There are some regulars that feel comfortable with hitting the dance floor. I was not one of them. The grilled asparagus was absolutely a highlight for me. The asparagus was served in a smooth balsamic vinegarette and the goat cheese was light and delightful. I would come back just to try this dish again. The breading on the calamari was loose. I'm not sure it was fried quite long enough. In general I wanted to like the calamari but it just wasn't up to par. There was a tomato dip that simply lacked flavor. Anyways I would return to try more vegetable dishes. And they come at fifteen bucks a pop which for having entertainments, is not bad value for midtown Manhattan. read more

We were sitting at the bar and a man ( with a hat) who we found out was an owner was rude unprofessional and disturbing. He was constantly rude to the staff using profound words in front of the customers. Very said that we had to leave and couldn't listen to great music... 3.5 stars for me, but rounding up. Reviews are true that this place will nickel and dime you for your money, which was a little annoying, but despite all of that, I still ended the night with a memorable experience. To experience the jazz band and swing dancing you need to have prior reservations and there is a 20 dollar fee per person. There is also a mandatory coat check which is $2 per item. Once you're inside there are 2 types of table (cocktail, dinner). If you made an open table reservation (which is what I did), you are expected to order dinner. We ordered the mussels and a pasta dish. Both dishes were actually really good! The 3 dessert cocktails were a bit of a let-down, but the banana dessert cocktail was the best of the bunch. Apple pie a la mode was just on the ok side (have had a better version at Applebee's). Our server was super attentive to the point it was a little overbearing. Watching the swing dancing was the best part of the night. I felt very entertained and I had fun hearing the classic Jazz songs from Louie Armstrong and Billie Holiday among others. The workers here or customers were doing a great job dancing the night away! Good place to host a birthday dinner with girlfriends or just a romantic night out with your significant other. This place is just a big scam. The only reason I gave it 1 star was because the music was good. Walking into the place all they tell you is that theres a $20 cover per person. No biggie. Then when you sit, they tell you each person has to order at least $35 worth of food at the table. They can and should certainly add this, but today it is not there. Made a reservation specifically because they have live jazz and dinner. They list on their site early and late show with about an hour in between. When we arrived we were told there was a private party so they couldn't seat us where the music is. And the music now will start 30 minutes later than normal. We were seated in the restaurant area which is separate from where the music is. Also not obvious from their website. It's in a back room. As they were seating us in the restaurant area, they said they'd give us a nice table after dinner once the private party was over. No mention of a cover. I asked the hostess and our waiter if they'd be letting us still have a table in the back since we'd had dinner. They said they'd put a nice table together for us. Still no mention of a cover. The people next to us asked their server if they could go in the back. I overheard the waitress say there was a cover. They didn't have reservations so I asked if the cover was for everyone and was told yes. If you're planning a nice night, this looks like it could have really been a fun evening. Swing 46 is swanky. It definitely brings you back to the 1950's with their old all american decor and live music orchestra! This joint plays live music 7 nights a week, and depending on the day you go, you'll be swinging with an 18 piece big band, foxtrot'ing to some Sinatra, Lindy Hopping around, and even some Hustle towards the end of the night! How many swingers now-a-days can say they swing to live music on a daily basis 7 nights a week? Check their website for which band is on the night you feel like enjoying music, dinner, and dance! The cover is $12 per person for the live band ($15 for Saturdays) with mandatory coat check. However, if you sit in for dinner, the cover is waved for your party! To redeem your coats is a hefty fee of $1 per item, but I understand why this place tries to nickle and dime it's patrons- during the weekdays, it's pretty damn empty and they need to make up for costs to run this fine establishment; with very limited space to dance, this is a plus for me who loves to dance all night. Weekends are packed, just pray there aren't any aerial swingers around since you are likely to get clocked in the face! Now, on to my review: the food here is SOLID! I mean, it better be for the price. I had the bacon wrapped scallops for $27 and they were a hit! I think I got 5 , and although they weren't jumbo diver scallops; and although they lacked proper sear on the scallops; it was well made up for with its perfect temperature, texture, freshness, and crispiness of the bacon that COMPLETELY covered the whole scallop! The mash that came with it was delicate and that sauce made be want to pick up my plate and lick it dry! The other dishes I tried from the plate of my party were very tasty as well. Drinks were on the higher end, but overall, I HIGHLY recommend this place as a date night with great dinner and dancing! If you are on a budget and itching to burn the dance floor, just pay the cover, you won't be disappointed. My husband took me here for my 40 th bday 9 years ago . I was thrilled that night , since it was a huge surprise to me , that there are swing and big band clubs still in operation . We had the best time ever . You must go if you are into swing dancing , and going back in time . I would swear I was meant to be living in those times . We came across Swing 46 and opt to attend swing dance lessons and sit for the live band another day. For $15.00 one can enjoy dance lessons and obtain a live band performance to open the world of jazz. Service is attentive. The quality of food is good, although not excellent. There is pre-fixed menu of $25.00 per person (without drinks). Swing 46, disappointedly, does not have a full-service bar as I was hoping for a Sangria but opt for a Cosmo. I rate it four stars due to the high price and the brownie for dessert is a very small piece. read more

We enjoyed a lovely dinner here last Sunday. With the nice weather we dined al fresco. Just love the prix fix menu and drink specials here. Great fresh food. I enjoyed a terrific caprese salad, rack of falling off the bone ribs, crunchy sweet potato fries and a rich brownie dessert for 25 dollars.
