Pizzas were really good and that is coming from someone who doesn't eat a lot of pizza! Their margherita pizza had a phenomenal sauce , the Happy Pig had all the meats , but my favorite had to be the Blue Moon -- well caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms ‍ and blue cheese for a irresistible flavor combo! Pizzas are 12ish inches, 6 small slices each - if you are hungry enough you could probably eat one yourself (I did), but if not, I imagine you would still only leave with like two slices. In my opinion, they are too small to share a single pizza It is a pizza and cider place though, so not a great selection of beers but some of their cocktails looked good. I was there for the start of beer week so I had the 2024 brewers guild collab brew which was a very good, low alcohol, drinkable IPA. They might have a few other staples on tap when it is not on tap. They also do experimental pizza flavors too - some are better than others, but hey! You gotta try new things! They had a Three Fun Guys pizza which was three types of mushrooms with leeks that could have been really good but was too dry - missing a sauce or something... still I enjoyed trying it. The place IS SMALL! They run one heck of a take-out business though and you can call your order in, pick it up and walk over to Funks for a beer if there is t seating available (and it's nice out). Switchback Pizza is a tiny restaurant by the railroad tracks in the small down of Emmau, Pennsylvania. Nothing fancy with just a few tables and a nice honest-to-goodness wood-burning oven. (outdoor seating in warm weather). They pride themselves on using all local ingredients for their pizzas, breads and deserts. We had dinner there on February 5, 2026. We ordered two 12 in. dia pizzas--a 4 cheese pizza for me and a margherita pizza for my wife. The pizza crusts were excellent--crisp and flavorful and lightly charred from the wood oven. But the cheese on the 4-cheese pizza was very skimpy and not really distinguishable except for the ricotta which dominated. Hard to tell what cheeses they used since there was so little cheese. The margherita pizze was more flavorful with a nice sauce and a few pieces of cheese and fresh basil but here, too, the cheese was very skimpy. Switchback is known for its hard cider but we went with a Viennese lager beer which was excellent. Our bill for two pizzas and two 10-oz beers was just over $40. BTW, the server was very personable and efficient--4 stars for her! My advice? Stick with the wonderful crust but don't be so stingy on the other ingredients. read more

We decided to give this place a go for a casual birthday dinner for two. The place is incredibly small, but we were lucky enough to get a seat at the counter by the window. The server (I believe her name is Adrianna) was phenomenal. Extremely bubbly and welcoming. We got the fresh ciabatta roll, Happy Pig, and Margarita Pizza. Everything was out. of. this. world. I've been here once about two or three years ago - the place just opened, I think. Shortly after, left the state moved out of state & have not visited since but i will when I'm back for the holidays. I do remember the first time that I went there, which was the only time, like I said - it was an old gym; they renovated & made it really nice inside. The pizza, I think, is freshly made in an oven that looks very expensive. They also have a portable oven that they take to farmers markets or whatever. I cannot remember what I ordered. I think they were just kind of getting their stuff together. More than likely I ordered a margarita pizza bc that's standard for a "fresh made pizza place." So, I have to go back and leave another review. For now, this is the review I write, bc at that time it wasn't spectacular. But, being versed in business & the hospitality industry I know that just bc you didn't have a great experience the first time does not mean that is what it's like all the time. The pizza is good. It is go out of your way to get it good. Take a trip to Emmaus, go to the local bookstore, grab a beer at a local brewery and get this pizza. Seriously though, wood fire pizza oven gives it such a nice crust. The sauce is slightly sweet and it works. I had the margarita pizza which was everything it should be, sauce, chunks of fresh mozzarella and fresh basil. My kids had the pepperoni and they loved it. I did not get any beer or cider but it was nice to see it offered. I also got the ciabatta. It was a little salty on the outside but it worked well. It was tasty. This is a small place, it was cozy. They have frozen pizza to go which is nice. Service was good and prompt. I did not have to wait for anything. My son spilled his drink and I did not even have to ask for napkins or anything, they saw it and were on top of it. I will be back here for sure. read more

Visited Switchback a few weeks ago with my boyfriend and was very excited as I love Neapolitan pizza. Left with mixed feelings. First off, the pizza is absolutely delicious. I had the pizza with the prosciutto and my boyfriend had the blue cheese and mushroom pizza. Both were excellent. The ciabatta roll was also good, albeit a bit underdone and raw in the middle, but nice and crusty on the outside. We also enjoyed the cider flights. The most disappointing part of our dinner was the service. I don't know if she was having an off day, but our waitress mostly ignored us the entire time. Never had our water pitcher refilled when it was empty, she forgot about our drinks, and we had to ask twice for utensils and napkins. It wasn't particularly busy when we went and there were multiple empty tables, so I'm not sure why this happened. There is also a train that passes directly behind the patio area that is deafeningly loud, not the restaurant's fault but something to consider as multiple trains passed by during our dinner. We will probably be back to order to go or buy the frozen options as the pizzsa was great, but I don't think we'll dine in again. read more

Switchback makes some great pizzas. The crust is soft and toasty from the wood oven. Lots of locally-sourced ingredients. Occasionally the service is quick, but most of the time it takes forever. Which is fine, since the pizza is good. I've tried some of the fancier vegetarian options (like the Blue Moon) but tend to prefer the simpler varieties. My favorite thing to do in the summer is pick up a pizza and take it over to Yergey to eat along with a flight of beer. read more

With Balasia gone from Emmaus (a true loss), we pouted about where we could eat when working in the area. But then on Yelp I spotted a pizza place that listed vegan in its description. Their vegan pizza has tomato sauce, kale, local mushrooms, and onions -- a fancy tomato pie. There is no alternative cheese, so you might enjoy a little extra sauce on the side for dipping. The wood-fired thin crust is wonderful and crisp, and you can see the huge bags of non-bleached flour stacked up in the corner. The building used to be the Emmaus train station. The interior is bright, clean, and cool with a very welcoming staff. I would love to see them make their own creamy pizza sauce (if they would not be up for a cheese like Daiya or the incredible gourmet organic Miyoko's) with cashews and some of that garlic they grow themselves, since vegan pizza without a savory sauce can be a little dry. Top quality ingredients, friendly service, and very reasonable prices. You can BYOB too. read more

They also have salads, desserts, & specialty nonalcoholic drinks. Started as a mobile pizzeria catering to various local farmer markets here in the Lehigh Valley, corporate lunches, and weddings for the past three years, Switchback seems to have taken a strong hold on the niche market they encapsulate. Hey, now this is a pretty gosh darn good pizza place! Come to Switchback and you'll avoid the cheese-blanketed, sugary-sauced pies of Armetta's. Come to Switchback and you'll dodge the cheap-o slices served with a hefty side of brusqueness at Joe's Pizza II. Come to Switchback and you'll never have to deal with making the harrowing turn out of the Domino's on Lehigh Street, risking your low auto insurance premiums for something as fetid and regret-inducing as a Memphis BBQ Chicken Pizza. Switchback's pies come off a wood-fired oven, twirled to a charred and bubbly bliss via a deft hand with a pizza peel. Armetta's and Joe's have industrial ovens. Domino's has an, um, conveyor belt? Switchback's toppings include local mushrooms, kale, gorgonzola, and humanely raised bacon. Armetta's has buffalo hot sauce and blue cheese (?). Joe's has "vodga" (??). Domino's has ... cheeseburger (???). Switchback hosts a comfortable, modern atmosphere that encourages hanging out. Armetta's, Joe's, and Domino's make you feel like you're just there to help them pay the bills. You might think that the owners at Switchback are hippies or "liberal progressives" or lizard people for making pizza the way pizza should be made. But just go and try a Happy Pig or Veggie Lovers pie. Make sure to check out what's on special too, as the toppings shift with what's fresh. If they have the meatball pie, order it. Three additional suggestions: 1) Shake some of the crushed hot peppers on top of your slices--sparingly. 2) BYO Citrus IPA from Funk Brewing Company right down the street. 3) Find out if they have any leftover equipment from when the place used to be a gym. I thought I'd try this new pizza place in Emmaus. From their other Yelp page it seems this business started as a stand at the Emmaus Farmer's market. Parking might be an issue at this location when it gets crowded; a lot of their neighbors are parked around this building. I figured for my first visit I'd keep it simple so I ordered their Margherita pizza. It looks like they only make personal size pizzas. Mine was tasty, thought I would have liked a little more basil.
