Every time I come here, the food is great (I get the salmon), the staff is friendly, and the line is out the door. I love how healthy it is, even though it is technically a barbecue joint (the salmon is nestled on a bed of spring greens). I also love the coleslaw, of all things! I hate mayonnaise, and the coleslaw either hides the taste of mayo very well or it is dairy-based instead. The location next to the creek is also splendid and well-lighted! Also, pretty much all of their wood is donated, so if you happen to chop down a fruit tree, keep these guys in mind! read more

If it's mid-day and I'm near Evergreen, chances are I'll be stopping here for some bomb barbecue. Switchback is easily my favorite BBQ place in Colorado. On a nice day, sitting on their deck next to the river, with a beer and their smoked chicken legs, pretty hard to beat. Speaking of the chicken legs, this has become my favorite item on their menu. They have an amazing amount of smokey flavor, with crispy skin, and juicy meat. Ugghhhhhhhhhh, so good. Their pulled pork is solid, though not as memorable, and I do frequent their brisket. Pros: - BBQ items are fantastic - Quaint roadside establishment - Staff is friendly and beer is reasonably priced - Outside seating next to river is quite pleasant Cons: - It can get busy and they run out of meats :( - The sides are not very memorable, but who gets BBQ for the sides? - While being next to the river is nice, the view of the other side is kind of an eyesore read more

I loved this place for years, ordered the same thing every time. The duck sandwich. Recently went and ordered it and received my meal with just the duck, no lettuce, no tomato, no spread, just duck and bread. I was informed to cut down on the "line time" they would no longer be serving the duck sandwich with any toppings, not even if requested when ordered. The waiter who the food out, I asked him for napkins, his reply, "they are inside" and walked off. Check out my first picture for everything that we ordered! The best were the chicken legs! Order 2 per person! They are so good! The root beer bbq sauce is sweet and tangy. We loved all of the food, my brisket wasn't my favorite, but I think it's because I should have ordered it as a sandwich. We didn't have to wait very long for our food but locals told us the line is usually wrapped around the building. You order at the front door, they give you a number and it's open seating. The pork was juicy and the Mac and cheese is enough to share. This was a great little spot. We stopped here after we visited look out mountain. We are not from the area, we are from Florida and we know good bbq. This spot did not disappoint. We sat outside and it was gorgeous. Great staff and very clean. read more

Did take out, ordered pulled chicken, pulled pork, Burbon glazed salmon, Cowboy Baked Beans, Potato Salad, Waffle fries and Fried Zucchini. We called 40 minutes after they opened and they were out of the brisket. Pulled Chicken - Very good and moist, nice flavor. Boyfriend liked this more than the pork. Pulled Pork - VERY good, flavorful and moist. (again according to him, since I don't eat meat) Burbon Glazed Salmon - Very dry, the glaze seemed nice but there wasn't enough to combat the dryness of the salmon. It was also Sockeye Salmon which was previously frozen. Not impressed with the salmon at all. Cowboy Baked Beans - Good there looked to be huge thick cuts of bacon in this (again I did not try this menu item). He said this also had a kick. Potato Salad - Weird. It had a spicy kick to it. It wasn't bad but it was weird. Fried Zucchini - DELICIOUS. I really liked this, even if they zucchini was soggy and messy (not coated entirely). I like my fried zucchini to be like the fried green beans from Fridays, coated entirely and crisp. Either way these were really delicious, but I really really like zucchini. Waffle Fries -frozen. not cut fresh there at least they didn't taste fresh cut at all. Also soggy. Over all pretty decent. read more

The food is 5 stars. The service is 3. I drove 35 minutes to come here because everyone suggests it. I also wanted to give a small restaurant my business during this hard time. When I got there, The guy who helped me seemed annoyed that I was even there. I didn't have any signal on my phone to place a phone order and i think that's why he was annoyed. Hands down one of my favorite restaurants in Colorado. The meat: f***ing amazing. The service: Mellow mountain folk who you kind of want to grab a beer with. The setting: Outside, eat (with your dogs if you want) on picnic tables by a creek. Inside, on map-covered tables perfect for the messy meal you're about to have. Cannot recommend this spot highly enough. They DO sell out some days, so I advice showing up a little earlier than you might have planned. We tried their brisket, pulled chicken, bacon and ribs along with all 4 sauces. The brisket was very very good, I would say that it reminded me of pastrami (which I mean in a good way). The ribs had a good flavor, but did need to be smothered in the supplied sauce. The bacon and chicken were okay, but for me the brisket was the star. The four sauces were of a mustard kind, spicy/peppery kind, sweet and a smoky - I believe you get one sauce per meat selection, so it was great we got to try all four. I think their prices are fair and for the small town of Kitteridge to have this place is fantastic (if you are in Evergreen you should come and check them out). If I am ever back up in this area I will for sure have some more brisket, try the duck breast and some of their sausages. read more

The Switchback looks like an old house in a run down location, with very limited parking, but don't judge a book by its cover! Definitely give this a try, if you're in the area. The meals we had were wonderful! The meat is so tender & juicy! The dining room wasn't the most comfortable, though. I love a pulled pork sandwich with cole slaw & was pleasantly surprised that they had that on their menu. I had the Devil's Elbow (pulled pork sandwich with cole slaw and fried onions on a brioche bun) and it was delicious. I could only eat half of it, as it was huge. Menu was about 40% of normal, not sure why. We ordered brisket sandwiches but the told us if we wanted sandwiches we had to call in ahead, because it took too long to make them otherwise. Stranger than strange, since we were able to order brisket, just no bun? We ordered the brisket, no biggie. The menu said "smoked brisket" but it was unlike any smoked brisket I've ever had. We're from Texas so we know BBQ, but have been here in CO 6 years and have never seen "smoked brisket" like this anywhere...it was basically corned beef brisket! While it wasn't what we wanted, it wasn't awful so we made it work. The grilled asparagus was quite good, as was the potato salad, but you go to a smoked meat place to get good smoked meat. Staff was friendly and fast, but food was served in Chinese take-out boxes with pre-packaged plastic utensils/napkin/salt and pepper packet yes. Two 1/4lb brisket orders were dumped together in the same box. Total was $50 with tip, including one beer (served in a can, and no glass in spite of requesting one) and one water. Don't see us going back. If we'd wanted mediocre BBQ we'd have gone to Dickies and spent 30% less. Sigh. read more

Weird spot to be honest. The guy who took our order had an attitude and kept making stupid faces when we didn't know exactly what we wanted that very second. The pulled pork sandwich came with mayo, lettuce & tomato on it. It was good after I removed all of that other stuff. The BBQ beans were different. The scenery is okay because there's a little stream, but there are houses right behind that and it's sandwiched between the highway. Excellent barbecue! I was so fortunate to stumble upon this gem and experience the most delicious smoked duck, brisket, baked beans, and asparagus! The spicy sauce had just the right amount of "kick", and combined with open air seating along the creek, made for full-flavored enjoyment. We had gone for a hike in Evergreen and my husband was craving bbq so we yelled and found this. Bbq is one of my least fav foods so I wasn't thrilled but I found out quickly that I had just not had GOOD bbq yet. We ordered 2 sandwiches and a chicken leg. All of them were incredible, the flavor and tenderness. My sandwich was duck and goat cheese and I'd eat it again every day this week if I could. This meat is definitely worth the drive through the mountains! I've enjoyed myself every time I've gone, and will definitely go again. My favorite is the pulled pork. Soft and tender, and with the rootbeer bbq sauce (you get your choice of sauces) it's slightly sweet. The mac and cheese was very "blue box"-esque so nothing fancy but will get the job done if they're out of their other tasty sides. It's a little weird when you get there, you stand in a line out the door, after ordering off of a quickly diminishing menu (meats and sides being taken off the board in real time. get there early if you want your choice!!), you can hit the bar or find a seat. This place is nice and cozy with a deck right alongside s creek. Enjoyed the chicken leg and sausage alright, though both were a bit dry. We arrived at 6pm and almost all the meats and sandwiches were sold out- would have loved to try more. I went back to order more food once ours arrived (the chicken leg is pretty small) and they had sold out of absolutely everything but sides. I love the switchback smokehouse !! Lemonade in a jar, amazing smoked meats, great sides, and a rushing creek at your side. Their prices are reasonable, everything is ala carte so you can try as many sides as you want, or none at all and try all meats. What I don't like and the reason why it's not 5 stars ; is the way they have laid out their service concept. Even though there are open tables and employees all around, when you enter, you have to wait in a line to order. Almost like Panera but they offer you drinks while you wait. I just don't get that part. Been here three times and never waited less then 15 minutes to order and sit down. read more

The good is the smoked salmon and duck. Can't tell you about the brisket as they ran out at lunch. Ribs we okay, but not great. The ice tea was super weak and the beer was barely cold.
