This barbecue house seems to attract folks for their 'que by the pound, smoked wings, and special sauces (espresso whiskey, honey gold, Texas red). It's a large restaurant that spans a few floors, and just about every table was filled upstairs (downstairs is more of a bar-vibe) so families were mostly seated upstairs. Have to give credit because for most of the things in their control, Whiskey Star excelled. A big restaurant on Main Street in Breckenridge often lends itself to poor service and long wait times. That was not the case at all here. We were seated quickly and the food came out a lot sooner than we all expected. The table shared Smokehouse Nachos with brisket and they were excellent. Good chips and toppings, loaded with tender meat. The manager even helped bus the tables because they were busy and they brought out a complimentary piece of cake for a birthday we were celebrating. The inside of the restaurant resembles a Western saloon and there is nice patio seating. Unfortunately, the entrees all left a lot to be desired. I got a salad with smoked chicken that was very dry and bland. The Brisket Mac n Cheese wasn't nearly as good as the meat from the nachos and most of the others at the table were underwhelmed with their orders. For our first night in Breckenridge, we wanted something quick to pick up and enjoy at our Airbnb. This BBQ joint was within walking distance so we placed orders online and went to pick up our order. Everything we had here tonight was delicious! We split a two meat platter, then ordered two extra sides and a 1/4 pound of meat - it was plenty (with some leftovers too!) for my husband and me. We had sliced brisket and pulled pork on the platter and both were so tender and full of flavor. The platter came with one small side, so we ordered collard greens. My goodness, they were some of the best I've ever had at a restaurant. We had the chopped brisket as the additional 1/4 pound of meat and it was perfectly cooked and delicious as well - my husband said that was his favorite meat of the meal. We also highly suggest the candied sweet potatoes and the smoked cream corn... holy wow! Both were incredible! The BBQ sauces on the table were really tasty too. They have a Texas red, spicy Texas red, sweet Carolina mustard, and a sweet espresso... I found myself alternating between the four with each bite I took. The staff were awesome, too. They were all really friendly and accommodating to guests with special requests. The host asked where a group would like to sit and the servers even helped them move when they were unclear about where the patio was (they serve $9 margaritas on the patio!). From the first person we spoke to, to the kitchen staff we passed as we left, everyone was great! Only two things that were disappointing: 1. We didn't have our dog with us to enjoy the dog friendly patio. 2. This restaurant is a long way from home! We would be here a whole lot if it was closer! We went there for dinner with the kids. In short, the food was very good...we got chicken wings, chopped brisket sandwiches, etc. The only real problem was order accuracy. The waitress was super busy and plenty nice bit we ordered pickles and onions with the BBQ sandwiches but they didnt come when the food was delivered and when we reminded the waitress she told someone but maybe ten minutes later we decided to just eat before the food got cold. We told her to forget the pickles and onions but ordered a side of fries. Well we all finished our food and the fries weren't there so we told her to forget the fries too. So the service was friendly and the food was good but I cannot give four or five stars to a restaurant that did not deliver us what we ordered. read more

We love to come here for bbq when we're visiting Breck. We'd heard on one of our earliest visits that the staff is trained by the staff of Franklin's in Austin and if that's still true, I don't know, but the bbq is pretty dang delicious. The Mac n cheese and creamed corn is great, the pulled pork and brisket, phenom. My husband loves to get his shiner bock here (but was surprised it came out in a can, that wasn't always the case in the past). It's definitely picked up in popularity and was pretty busy when we visited at dinner time on a weeknight in early October. They got us seated pretty quickly, service was above average but after the food was delivered we were forgotten for some time, and with kids that's so tough bc once they are done, they're done. Won't stop us from coming back, really good food and worth a visit if you're visiting Breck and craving BBQ! read more

Where to start! As kind as I can give them it's not good. Here we go. Service was very slow and chaotic but it was pretty empty. Waitress cleaned tables vs asking for our order. Lost our drink order so food and cocktails came together. I really enjoy BBQ. This was nothing short of tragic. Small portions. Leathery dry brisket that was salt capped. WTF?! Burnt ends were literally burnt dry. Pulled pork was meh, but it was the best of the choices though. Beans were good Greens were decent It was a hard fail. But the Old Fashioned was yummy. My friend and I came to Whiskey Star for dinner after a day on the slopes. Upon arriving, we were immediately seated. Our server promptly took our orders, but the service tapered off after that. Despite the restaurant being quite empty, we had to wait for our food. This wait wouldn't have been an issue at most restaurants, as with many foods, it has to be prepared after the order is placed. However, authentic BBQ takes 6+ hours to prepare, meaning the only thing they're doing when you order is plating the food. That's why most authentic BBQ restaurants, in my experience, serve your food almost immediately. Nevertheless, the wait wasn't terrible, and the food more than made up for the delay. Everything, not just the BBQ, was absolutely delicious. In fact, I would say that the BBQ here is some of the best BBQ I've ever had. read more

Things they did well: food came pretty fast once our server took our order. Food was mostly good. Chicken was super dry, but ribs, brisket, fries were good. Things that weren't good. Atmosphere. We were sat next to a bunch of tables piled high with T-shirts. Service was awful. Forgot drinks, had to ask the server to take our order - she asked us to wait and then took another tables order, we waited for the check even after asking for it twice. We have three young kids so it was a struggle to keep them entertained. I ended up leaving with my three kids and having my husband wait to pay. I tracked her down and told her he's been waiting. We found out that gratuity was included with parties of 6 or more so it explained why she wasn't concerned with our service from the beginning but the tables of smaller parties were her priority. We were visiting Breckenridge and wanted somewhere we could sit on the patio with a dog. We had a puppy with us, so that was important to us. They were super accommodating and so nice! The owner/chef even came out to meet us and gave the puppy some brisket. I ordered the brisket platter with cornbread, beans and coleslaw. Everything was super tasty.
