The receptionists are also very kind and professional. I've been to Carmela twice now and have had a phenomenal experience every time. When I first came to Carmela my hair was long and unhealthy with a botched hair cut. I didn't want to take off too much length, but wasn't sure what could be done with so much damage. She brought it back to life, keeping my locks long and gorgeous. Months after the hair cut, it grew out beautifully and kept it's shape. Carmela is fabulous at what she does and is very pleasant to talk to. I just saw her again a couple of days ago for another hair cut, except this time I wanted to chop it off completely. I haven't had short hair since I was 10 so I was a little freaked out about it. I cannot express how happy I am with this cut! Not only was it a wonderful and relaxing environment with Carmela, but her styling was spot on to the photo I showed her. Kristen is a hair goddess! I rarely trust anyone to cut/color/style my very thick hair, but she knew exactly how to layer/texturizing/thin it so it maintained it's volume but became tons more manageable. So after much thought I decided to post my full review of my experience here because I don't want anyone else to go through what I did after trusting Yelps reviews. I was encouraged to not post a review in exchange for a refund. Wonder if this has happened previously. It cost me over $520 (plus tip) to "correct" their color and cut....Yes, I am mad because of the added expense and damaged hair that had to be chopped off and packed weekly with coconut oil and deep conditioners mid-week for months now. I came in to Syndicate for cut and highlights for the first time. Kristen was very sweet and nice. Easy to talk to and seemed to care. The salon is also very modern and beautiful. I'm naturally a blond (Swedish) and like highlights to brighten it up. I always ask about the condition prior to getting my hair done and Kristen said my hair was healthy. I specifically said no ash, no toner and no yellow color when we looked at pictures. I ended up with ash blond highlights not to my scalp and colored darker roots. I left thinking maybe I'll like it better in other lighting and after I get used to it. My family instantly didn't like it and I agreed. I called only an hour after leaving to set up time to come back to hopefully fix it. 3 days later I went in and she ended up putting more highlights in it and toner. She charged me for toner and a blow dry! What?! I was pretty upset since I specifically said I do not want toner in my hair as it fades too fast. And now I got charged extra for you to fix it? ...even though you did not listen to my wishes in the first place? I then posted my review with pictures. The owner got involved and said he would fix my hair and hoped I would reconsider my review. I took it down in good faith because I know a business is only as good as its reputation and he was very convincing that he could fix it... I went back in and he conditioned my hair. that's it....and had me look at pictures of hair and choose what I liked. I showed him a picture of my hair on my phone....he took my phone without asking and walked away from me and showed his partner. They talked about me without me hearing..... Brian came back with my phone and said his partner likes my hair better than the model picture. Safe to say I didn't agree. He obviously could not touch my hair further due to the damage. I purchased and paid $60 for a deep colored conditioner to help improve my color and remove the ash. But I still walked out with hair color I specifically said I did not want...and damaged beyond repair. They went ahead and gave me credit for the toner and blow dry. Nice. I had to call and request refund for the first appointment and had to call my cc company to dispute the total amount. They only gave me partial refund. I waited 4 weeks and went to a Beverly Hills salon to see what they could do. They were horrified: highlights were not to my base and looked like 2 months of grow out, said toner is a shortcut to good color, said ash is not flattering on me AND is not my natural color as Brian had tried to convince me...The cutting specialist showed me how crooked my hair had been cut by Kristen and how damaged my hair was. He had to chop a lot of length off!...as in 4 inches! They instructed me to pack my hair in coconut oil once a week and sleep with saran wrap covering it and not shampoo it unless absolutely necessary. The damage done will take a long time to recover! The correction cost me over $500! I cannot with good conscience not leave my true experience at this salon including the owner's reaction and lack of remediation. Kristen was very apologetic which I appreciate. But the damage is done and I'm still dealing with it 3 months later. read more

I went to this salon and could make an appoiment the same day, which was great! The salon itself it's pretty nice modern and slick, I wish the atmosphere would have felt the same, I found this salon very loud, people talking very loudly and obnoxiously. My shampoo experience was not as luxurious, just plain old shampooing, I was looking foward to a nice scalp and neck massage like most places I cut my hair, but not here. Then I waited about 35min for my stylist, finally he took me in, he was nice but was rough for my taste, he's hands were not so "smooth" as most hairstylist, he was choppy and hurt when he razor my hair. All in all good haircut, but I was expecting better treatment and more pampering as the salon looks the part. read more

I took my wife there for her birthday. The experience was very pleasant from making the reservation till we walk out of the door. Everyone's very nice even if they are busy. And if I say busy, trust me, they are. From the time we walk in till we leave, the place is packed at all time. But still, no one rushed us at any point. My wife cut, colored, and did the caviar treatment to her hair. Veronica did my wife's hair. She is a very nice lady and a great hair stylist. Pleasant and very easy to talk to. As a hair stylist, she listens to what we wanted, helped us along the process, but still keeps her expert opinions. I love that about her. She changed my wife's original thoughts about what she wanted and the result was wonderful. We couldn't be happier and my wife couldn't stop smiling. The place is very clean and has nice decor. I called some places and chose Syndicate because they are near me and had an appt for the same day. Julie did my hair and she was amazing! I ended up getting a bob. I didn't show her any pictures, just kind of explained what I was leaning towards. She literally gave the the exact cut I wanted. She was friendly without being annoying...don't you just hate it when your hairdresser talks your ear off? Julie's not like that. I have found my salon of choice! I needed to find a salon that provided Inoa color for my mother (she knew the color mix she needed). I'm really happy that out of the very few choices I took this one. We booked appointments, hers was with Michelle and mine with Julie. I will start with Michelle. Since she always did a fantastic job with my mother's color, and my cousin's, I booked an appointment with her for highlights and the keratin smoothing treatment. The highlights came out great, but what surprised me the most is how amazing that smoothing treatment was. I had previously done a few Brazilian Blowouts and they only lasted 1 month. Then my hair was back to frizzy nonsense. I did mine with Michelle in June and it lasted until Thanksgiving (except regrowth)!! WOW! Needless to say I was very happy. And now Julie. I came to her with my problematic highlights. They were way too high maintenance and I felt my hair was too damaged to handle it. She explained to me what was wrong, and she also started to weave my highlights with some color - not lowlights but highlights with color (which is less damaging than bleach, only con - it won't lighten as much as bleach, but it blends very nicely). My hair comes out beautiful every time. Her blowouts are amazing as well. At any other stylist the hair is straight and pretty for that day until I sleep, but with hers it last days. The front desk is always polite and friendly and more than willing to help you out and answer questions (as well as on the phone). When your meter runs low they refill it for you. They also have a wide range of great products for sale. My only con is that I came in once for a FANTASTIC hair cut, but the guy who cut my hair (Jonathan) is no longer with them, and no one seems to know what salon he moved to. read more

Awesome salon!! Went in this weekend to go from dark brown back to blonde, which is no easy task friends. Michelle was wonderful! She's super sweet, funny, and very knowledgeable in all things "hair". She was miraculously able to make me full on blonde after one try (fyi, this is not common). I definitely thought I was going to have to return a couple times to finish the process, but I walked out with beautiful full highlights, and a fancy blow out to match. Customer service and satisfaction is in full effect at Syndicate also. My meter was almost expired, so while I was under the dryer they took care of it for me. The girls at the front desk are very sweet, and the overall vibe in the salon is fun and refreshing. For first time visitors, or if you recommend someone, you receive 20% off your full service. This was my first visit to the salon and I didn't come here for a haircut or styling. I only came here to browse and purchase the shampoos and other products that their salon has to sell. The woman at the receptionist counter was amazing in helping me understand the products I needed for my hair, based on what I had told her. So why only four stars? After I paid for my products, I left, but quickly returned to the salon because I have, in fact, been looking to get hair extensions closer to where I am staying. There was a different woman at the receptionist desk and I asked her about hair extensions what the prices were. She told me it was $150 an hour, which is standard for some salons. And then I asked her about hair, do they buy the hair or do I have to buy it. She said that hair was an extra $550. Okay, again, standard price. I then began to tell her that I needed to get my extensions redone and wanted to stay with my dark hair. She responded by saying that she didn't know if they had any dark hair extensions... what??? My other stylists would go to shops and buy them with the money I gave to them for hair. She indicated that if none of the hair extensions came in the dark hair color I wanted, there would be an extra fee because they would have to dye them. I've lived in Encino for 2 years, but I hadn't heard of this salon before booking my appointment there this week. Nonie was supposed to blow dry my hair, but she was running late and a bitchy old lady (complete with long blond hair and long talons) insisted that her appointment had been forgotten, so she hijacked mine. No-one explained it to me, but I got switched to Sarah and I'm so glad, because she did a fantastic job. My long, thick hair is usually a pain and most of the time, blowouts end up either too full and puffy, or too flat. This was perfect, stylish and made the absolute most of my haircut and natural texture. The conditioning treatment left my hair supersoft and glossy - interesting, because I usually skip those kinds of things when they're offered, figuring they're not worth the extra cost. Now I know different. The salon itself is beautiful, with a black chandelier hanging over the shampoo area, and crystal ornaments hanging from the ceiling in the main styling/cutting area. Very contemporary and luxe, but if/when I go back to Syndicate, it'll be for Sarah's skills with my usually-difficult hair! read more

The salon is very nice but I had the misfortune of trusting Lark with my hair for a prior haircut gone wrong! Although Lark is very personable, he completely RUINED my hair! He texturized it so much that my very thick, voluminous hair now looks very thin and wispy! This is the "worst" haircut I've ever received in my life! What was supposed to be an hour appointment turned into two and one half hours. He went through my entire head of hair by little sections and cut into the length piece by piece. I sat there watching him but I thought he knew what he was doing! He told me he's a real pro when it comes to texturing hair. I trusted him which was a huge mistake on my part! He blew it out and I noticed it looked like half of the volume of my "thick" hair was missing! But, I didn't say anything, and in fact booked a color appointment and a few more blow drys. Obviously, I didn't realize at the time how botched and screwed up my hair was! He said I would love my hair after 2-3 more cuts! Seriously, who wants to wait that long to "love" your haircut! When I got home, I looked in the mirror and was horrified! Fifty percent of the volume was gone! My shoulder length hair is now so thin that I can literally see the" light" going through the layers! Some of the pieces are only 4 inches long from being cut into. The top of my hair (the crown) which prior to this botched haircut, went to the side and fell down by my eyes. Now, it's very short and I can barely wrap the thin pieces around a roller for some height. I have never been so appalled and furious about a haircut! The layers of my hair are now so short and wispy that I can't believe how he screwed up my hair! Yes, the girl before me cut my hair blunt when I told her not to. Lars was supposed to fix the blunt cut but went so overboard with his texturizing technique that I have half of the hair on my head! I've always been great at styling my hair after it was cut. Now, I'm having a very difficult time doing anything with it! Because it is so thin and wispy, short texturized layers, it barely wraps around a round brush! I can see more of the brush than the hair on it! It will take a minimum of six-nine months for the very short pieces in the layers to grow out. I have always received many compliments from people about what great hair I had! No more "thick" hair for me! I asked to speak to the owner of the salon to tell him about this catastrophe but he never called me back. When I told Lark how upset I was about his haircut he was less than apologetic and acted like I was crazy and neurotic! Needless to say the damage is done, and all I can do now is wait for it to grow! One other thing I feel necessary to say is that I spoke to the receptionist and told her how upset I was. Not only did I ask her to have Lark and the owner call me, but I also said I planned to write a review on Yelp. Obviously she told this to Lark. He threatened me by saying that two can play the game..he would post a video of me booking future appointments. What a jerk and a child! He gives me a horrendous haircut and then threatens me about writing a review on Yelp! I can't believe that he has a great reputation for cutting hair because he certainly ruined mine for a very long time!!! read more
