Ever gone to a kind of restaurant that's run by college kids and you feel like you're bothering them to place an order at the counter? Decided to try out a slice quickly before my movie last night, it did not disappoint. I've been coming to Sy's for years, especially when it was located by North Eugene High School! I've been hearing online about the new recipe and decided to check it out with my boyfriend. We both agreed that this new recipe is definitely good, it's more cheesy, the dough is crispier and the pizza is more firm, not flimsy. Super solid pizza, I just got the classic cheese and he got some toppings on his. Each slice runs you about $4, which really isn't bad considering how HUGE the slices are. Definitely filling. We also got the churro bites to try but I'd skip those if it's later in the day, they're $4 and not very sugary, but probably because it was 9pm; definitely best fresh. Service was quick and friendly. Not a lot of seating since it's a small location obviously but it's always been more of a quick bite to grab and leave kind of vibe for me. I'm a UO alum and I've lived in Eugene for years and somehow had never been to Sy's. Then I saw an infograph about the best pizza shops amongst all Power 5 college football teams and Sy's was listed as the best at Oregon (granted, it also said Chuck E. Cheese is the best at Alabama...). I asked some fellow Eugene pals and those who had eaten there all agreed that Sy's has excellent pizza. I've been to NYC a few times and had great pizza, so I wondered if it was THAT good. One friend said, "Well, it's not like you feel that you're about to get on the subway and head to the Comedy Cellar after eating there, but it's still really good." So I gave it a shot, ordering on UberEats (GrubHub and Postmates wouldn't deliver to my house for some reason, but UberEats had no issue). The pizza arrived perfectly and everyone enjoyed it. I've had deep dish all over Chicago and the Midwest. While Sy's Sicilian deep dish can't compare to those, it's still really good. Thick, sturdy and plenty of sauce. My kids especially loved it. The Neopolitan thin crust pizza was really good and very filling. Super easy to eat, although the dough is sturdy enough that it's not necessary to fold like with so many pizzas in NYC (but I folded it anyway because it's fun to eat that way). The two medium pizzas we got were plenty for 3 adults and four kids with lots of leftovers. The garlic knots are awesome if you really love garlic (which I do). Seriously, if you don't like much garlic, don't even bother. My wife said she wished the pizza had the garlic knot dough as an option for the pizza... it was that good! My experience wasn't positive or comfortable, and due to the staff's lack of respect, I ended up returning my pizza. The place itself was nice, and the pizza seemed yummy. However, my experience with the staff at this pizza place left me feeling horrible. While I can't confirm if the cashier was annoyed, I sensed a lack of support during my menu selections, at the very least. I was the sole customer in the restaurant. After ordering, already feeling kind of uncomfortable, I sat waiting while staff members chatted among themselves. Unfortunately, I missed that my pizza was ready because I didn't hear it. The fact that they expected me to pay attention to them and catch the announcement among their chatter was so entitled and rude. When I expressed my concerns, without attacking them as I have experienced things, both of them went defensive and threw covert insulting comments, which was just disgusting. They shifted the blame onto me for not hearing my order, even though their communication lacked clarity. I don't think it was that hard to call me in an empty place and tell me that the order was ready. Therefore, I felt bullied. I was also accused of sitting on my phone "talking to someone" and not paying attention to my pizza. I was disappointed by the poor communication and lack of accountability in this situation. As a customer, I expected clearer communication, especially in an empty place, literally. I ended up returning the pizza and think I'll never go here again because I don't want to face this treatment. I came to rest and eat, but was treated with a total lack of respect and was left feeling so unheard and disrespected. It's crazy how these people are allowed to be working there and treat customers like that. Even if it was selective bad treatment, it is even worse, because then it becomes personal. I hope this review encourages the restaurant to address these issues and create a more customer-friendly environment. read more
