Hubby & I regularly ordered take-out at Szechuan House's old location. Ordered once during first chaotic weeks when they reopened. Then today we walked in their beautiful place with hanging flowers, clean, well appointed ambiance and friendly efficient staff. Ordered a lot of our favorites for the weekend - Very Spicy Kung Pao Tofu, Crispy Eggplant, Veggie Egg Foo Yung, Moo Goo Gai Pan, Combination Lo Mein & Egg Rolls. Wow! So far everything is so delish! Best egg rolls I've had in 20 years. They were fresh tasting & crispy. The Moo Goo Gai Pan & Lo Mein are outstanding. My spicy Kung Pao is delicious, but not spicy enough for my liking. No problem. Sriracha sauce took care of that. Next time I'll get them to bump up the heat. Yes, there will be a next time. There will be many next times to come. Thank you, Szechuan House! We were so looking forward to trying this new version of Szechuan House. We waited to go to this restaurant as they had only opened in December and were hoping that all the kinks would be ironed out. The restaurant is just a mess. You enter and there is no hostess stand or anyone to greet you. We had to walk to the back to the counter where there was a line of people waiting. When my husband asked, they were waiting for carry-out. The layout of the restaurant is so strange - they had two tables that could seat 8 to 10, mostly booths for 2 or 4 and at best maybe 4 tables that could seat 6. We have a group of six of us that get together monthly for dinner and the person planning the March dinner picked the Szechuan House. She made a reservation for 6 people for 6:30 PM in late February for March 25, 2023. She confirmed it with the restaurant twice after making the reservation - even calling the day before. Imagine our surprise when we arrived at 6:20 PM to be initially told by the hostess that our party was there when actually they were not, and then were told that they had no tables available for 6 and that we would have to wait at least a half hour or more. The hostess' attitude was that they do not care about customer service or even being polite. While waiting for the rest of our party to arrive, the hostess tried to offer us a booth by the front door with what appeared to be a card table next to it, which we declined. When the person who made the reservation arrived, the hostess would not even talk to her. Needless to say, we left. We went to Kung Fu 12, where the food and service were exceptional. None of us will ever come back to this restaurant. What is the point of making a reservation if they are not going to honor it and then treat you poorly when you question why they did not honor the reservation? Eat somewhere else. read more

We were watching the Raven game and decided to order from Szechuan House. We went to the original restaurant at Seminary and York for a long time. We have enjoyed eating at the new restaurant in Timonium. The delivery guy was super and the food was delicious, as always. Can't say enough about the staff and service. I really have no complaints about the food except I always liked that they had a brown rice option. Apparently at least for lunch, they don't offer it. My garlic chicken was spicy and tasty and my Hot and Sour Soup was perfect My friend enjoyed her Happy Meal and Miso soup. The waitress was fine, but when you enter the place someone screamed from me from in the back and pointed to a booth. The place has no ambiance. Tried this restaurant for the first time. Service was fairly quick given that they were very busy from a seating service perspective. Got food to go. Got the 1/2 Peking duck with pancakes along with bitter melon pork. I was full after the Peking duck so didn't get a chance to eat bitter melon the same night. I would recommend eating that at the restaurant to ensure freshness the texture of the melon to be right since you won't need to microwave. Since I ate it the next day, it was not as good texturally as I anticipated. The Peking duck I would absolutely have again. It was very good with crispy skin which is essential to Peking duck dish. Love the service and the food. Excellent value. What I do really like is the take out. I do order from Grub Hub and as such, being a member they have smaller sized portions that we can split. Since there are no fees it makes it worth it. Got some Sesame Chicken, Egg rolls and Crab Rangoon. All hot and fresh. I can say not many of the Chinese food places in the area get it right and have the quality then SH has to offer. When we eat in we have a great time and love the owners and the servers. read more

If you're considering dining here may I suggest waiting another 6 weeks or so. Three of us dined here this evening and we weren't quite sure what to expect. Reservations were useless although we did get seated within 15 mins of our reservation time. They're grossly understaffed and the servers should be on roller skates as they do a good job of dashing around trying to make customers happy. One thing that is confusing is the way carry out is handled along with customers dining in. There needs to be separate locations for checking in. The food was simply mediocre. Not bad, not great. If customers are expecting anything resembling the old location perhaps they should wait a month or two. I'm definitely going back in the spring! read more

First time dining in the new location. The food was delicious as always but the ambiance is lacking. We dined for dinner on a Friday and the place was filled when we left. We had hot sour soup, steamed dumplings and egg roll for appetizers. Dumpling dough was too thick for my liking but flavor was perfect. Entrees were jalapeño beef and shrimp and string beans. Beef was melt in your mouth tender and flavorful. String beans were the star for me. read more

Update on the takeout scene. If there were hiccups as they opened they are cured. The lady took my order on the point of sale machine and noted my order number on my receipt. My order came out in about 10 minutes. Stapled to the bag was a detailed receipt with my order number in huge font and each item checked off in pen. Everything was exactly as I ordered. I'm glad to find that take out is running smoothly with the new system. I'll try online ordering next. The new menu is even bigger than before and the prices are still fair. read more

Very disorganized. We ordered and 30 minutes later, we had to find out the status of our food which they had forgotten to tell us about. A gentleman employee came to tables near and around us to bring plates, water etc. For some reason he skipped ours. It was our go to place in Walnut Creek. Ordered the seafood soup a few weeks ago and it was amazing. Loaded with seafood among plenty of other ingredients in a tasty piping hot broth. Came in tonight and hoping to get the same dish. It was very busy there since it was a cold night. When we received our seafood soup, it wasn't even close to what we had before. It was a lightly flavored broth with a few sliced water chestnuts, 6 tiny bits of calamari and mostly egg drops. I told our server that they gave us egg drop soup by mistake. She said that it was definitely seafood soup. Being busy on a cold nite, I understand that lots of soup has been ordered but if they're low on seafood, just tell us. Consumed half a rice bowl worth, paid the bill and left. Was a loyal customer since they opened. Not coming back. read more

I randomly came across this place when I got lost looking for a store nearby. I was hungry and I thought: "Why not?". It was such a blessing in disguise! I give it a 5 star rating because of the variety of choices, the reasonable prices with the portion sizes, my waitress being so amazing and it's location (near a lot of stores). Only things I didn't love was I felt the dumplings were too thick and that it literally right next to an entertainment venue so there was a lot of traffic. It used to be really good, 5 stars. First time at the new location, there was no hot tea. The sea food soup had no flavor and was thin - definitely something missing. The dinner was good, but served without lids that keep it warm. I had to ask for water after eating, as none was served. Second time back, our hot tea was served in a plastic container (ran out of teapots??) The sea food soup was good, but when I opened the piece of lobster tail to get the bit of meat out, it was bitter. When the meal came, there wasn't enough rice and the pork was very fatty. It was also not in small enough bite sized pieces, and there was no other silverware to cut it, other than soup spoon and fork. I did not enjoy the meal at all. I am not interested in returning. You can tell they make a lot of the dishes and sauces in house and the food isn't the same, pre-made packaged stuff every restaurant buys off the back of the truck. The free won tons seemed stale. There did not seem to be their usual portions which was fine because the food was ok at best. The food is good but they are unfortunately more than happy to rip off their customers. They forgot one item in our order (not great but it happens) and charged us for a different item (also not included in the order), which was the most expensive of the five dishes we ordered. I called to explain politely and to ask for a refund of the item we were charged for - we live 30 minutes away so no possibility to return to pick up the missing item. The lady I spoke to told me we were not telling the truth and that they would have to check with the person who packed the order. Then the same person - allegedly a manger - hung up on me. This is unfortunately a business that is happy to overcharge its customers by more than 20% and take no responsibility. We used to be fans of the old location - such a shame that things have gone so far downhill only a week into their new opening. It is infuriating, and a real shame. read more

The family and I visited this place on a Saturday at 6:30 we where greeted and seated right away. They brought out water and tea which was nice while we looked over the menu. 2 adults and 2 kids hubby got the sushi and Shasheeme combo which comes with soup and salad. I ordered chicken wings and fries for the kids to split with extra side of fries and I ordered 1/2 a Peking duck for myself. The waiter asked me if I've ever had Peking duck and I said yes. ( I'm from NYC and spent many a weekend in China town and canal street) well this is when things take a turn they bring out my duck and the kids meal at the same time but don't bring my husbands food not even the salad and soul so he can start with that while we eat our meal, ok but then they bring out my duck it's not looking very appetizing it's very very dry and sad looking and the person who comes to serve it to me holds the duck with a paper towel and a knife to start cutting it up ‍. Like I said I'm no stranger to Peking duck restaurants and never have I witnessed this. The duck tasted like it looked Dry. The kids wings had to be sent back because they where SUPER salty like my husband who always adds salt to his food said nope the kids can't eat this but when we ask for a new order they told us they would just take it off the check cause they are all seasoned the same so my kids ate the other order of fries and the rice from my duck. Finally they bring hubbies food out everything at the same time soup, salad, and sushi combo. He said it was ok but no one could tell us the name of the fish that came with the order we ask 3 people. Over all it's probably a place you go to get beef and broccoli or sweet and sour chicken but not anything special to write home about. read more

My co-worker and I went here for a quick bite to eat. It wasn't that busy but we stood at the counter for about 15 minutes till we were seated. We were quickly given our water, but that was it. I believe in total we sat there for about a hour and watch others being served. It wasn't until the couple next to us said to take our order that we were acknowledged. Yes, we were constantly trying to get their attention. Finally, we were able to order and what also seemed like forever received our food. It was mediocre ! We paid and when to leave, my co-worker forgot her hat and went back inside to it, the wait staff blocked her way back to the table and she had to move around them to get her hat. We should have left at the 15-minute mark but regardless will not be eating here again! read more

This was the worst food I've ever had in a restaurant. Tempura was very greasy and nasty, with no flavor. There was a puddle of oil on the plate.The crab wontons tasted like the crab meat was rotten. The walls were so gross. Unpainted drywall covered with food splatters. The ladies room was SO dirty.
