Terrible service and the food had no flavor. Barbecued spare rib appetizer had was bland. Wonton soup had 1 small wonton in it with virtually no meat. Chicken with cashew nuts meal very bland. Sha Cha chicken meal tasted almost exactly like the chicken with cashews. Took forever....server was inattentive. She brought us the bill and 2 to-go cartons for leftovers. I asked for small cartons to put our rice in. Instead she brought me 2 new containers of rice. I didn't notice until I got home that she charged me $1 each for the 2 containers of white rice that I didn't order. The only good part of the meal was the complimentary fried noodle chips. I gave the restaurant second chance after I drive 30 minutes in a rainy day to support them,they did not open for business that day buy they posted a fake schedule on Google to attract customers. They seated us with two glasses of water and after that no one came and asked us if we were ready to order we sat there for a half an hour waiting for somebody to serve us and they had 5 waiter/waitress serving tables I do not understand why we didn't served. we had servers walking past us not even noticing us! There people in the booth in front of us who got the same treatment and they were just as upset if not more then we were. i've never had such terrible Service in my life!!! We have been a long time (more than 10 years) loyal customer of this restaurant. We decided to try the reopened one and we were so disappointed. Environment: when step into it, the first impression to me is that it is NOT a fine restaurant but a fast food place. Food: We ordered our usual stuff, taste is just OK, price is higher ( I understand it ) but portion is smaller. Service: very disorganized, and stuff missing basic service trainings (I was shocked that the waitress stood by my side and watched me to write the tip on the receipt, she even said "very good" after I was done) Missed: 1. warm and friendly environment you can feel when you step into the old place 2. warm towers before/after dinner 3. fresh table cloth 4. hot tea ( I was told that tea maker was broken) We will give them another visit maybe 6 months later and hope they can improve. read more

We are long time customers of the old location. We have tried carry out twice. Very disappointed. Portions are much smaller and taste is not what it use to be. Orders missing rice, sauce and cookies even after asking if these items were included! May try again but not anytime soon. read more

They are so incredibly overwhelmed. We all know Szechuan House is a Baltimore County favorite! I ended up giving up on my order and leaving and said I would come back again in a couple weeks once they have everything figured out. I'm not angry, I left with a smile on my face! They just are having a really hard time keeping up with orders. I would highly suggest eating-in rather than getting carry out. It seemed like almost every carry out order was being lost somewhere along the way. I 100% look forward to going back to Szechuan House one day soon once they've figured out all the kinks! read more

I had been going to the original Szechuan house since middle school and it was the BEST! So I know exactly what I like there and remember exactly how everything tastes. I had been craving it for so long I decided to order carry out. I had ZERO problems with my order other than the lady taking forever to take my order. My order was ready for me as soon as I walked in the door. I ordered General Tso's (my favorite from there) and it did NOT disappoint, it was delicious! Also, I ordered chicken and broccoli which tasted exactly like I remember. The only disappointment I had was in the szechuan green beans which was a personal favorite side dish but the sauce isn't the same, needed to be thicker and not as spicy. Hopefully in a few months it will be back to the ORIGINAL Szechuan House I know and loved for so many years. read more

I loved this place and counted the days until it reopened in its new location. Not the greatest by, say, New York standards, but dishes you just don't get anywhere else. So why one star? I ordered takeout one evening. After ordering at the counter, the woman said, "Anything else?" I'd ordered a lot food and joked, "I'm a little guy; I don't think I could handle anymore." The owner was standing right there. He said, "Some of the greatest men in history were short." I said, "Right on," and we did a fist bump. He mentioned Xi Jinping and a few others and then said, "Even Hitler." I did a double take. Then I said, "Actually, no, not Hitler." He looked at me and said, "Even Hitler." I walked out and paced around the parking lot for twenty minutes, went back in and got my food, called my family, and never returned. Maybe admiring Hitler is your style. Wow I should have read the other bad reviews as they are spot on! We arrived on a Sunday night around 5:30 pm and the entrance is confusing. They have an ordering station up front that's only used for takeout but no hostess area so it's difficult to know where to go for dine-in. Once we were seated it was clear that they are grossly understaffed. We didn't have a dedicated waitress and we watched for 10-15 minutes as other tables were seated and orders taken before ours. We finally got a waitress over by flagging someone down. We ordered a couple appetizers and 3 main courses. When our appetizers arrived they didn't give us silverware or plates and we had to flag down another person who stated our waitress would bring them. After another 5-10 minutes we found a waitress and asked for plates etc., but she only brought us napkins... At this point we had been there for over an hour and we still didn't have our entrees. Our kids were starting to complain about the wait and being hungry so combined with the lack of service and lack of food, we decided to leave. I paid for the appetizers and we went across the street the Cava... Not sure if I would return. Maybe for takeout, but they need to get fully staffed first. read more

SH is my family's favorite restaurant. We ate our first meal at the new restaurant today: spacious and sunny with an orchid at our table. Szechuan green beans, lo mein, steamed dumplings, and water spinach with stew beef were delicious. There were lots of frustrated people waiting for pickup, maybe kinks of being new business. But zero customer service and the food isn't amazing. I have been to the new location three times, and have not had a satisfactory meal yet. I don't like the ambiance compared to the old location. Then my last visit, I got chicken and mixed vegetables. The vegetables were mostly broccoli, onions or cabbage, and some nasty mini corn; hardly any mushrooms or carrots, and the brown sauce was different. When I asked for more carrots and mushrooms, the waitress said you already ate your food and I would have to pay $6.95 for extra. I took the leftovers home, but there was so much garlic on the chicken, I could not eat it. I miss having a sit down Chinese restaurant to go to, but will do carry out elsewhere from now on. read more

Absolute worst sushi I've ever received. Got an order of the California roll sushi and not even a third of the platter could reasonably be called food. A majority had little to no meat on it at all, leaving a platter full of poorly rolled piles of rice, seaweed, and avocado. read more

Very disappointing. I was a customer at the old location for over twenty years. The booth was cramped and felt uncomfortable to all four of us. No hot tea available!! The food was very average. Had to ask for the appetizer fried wontons (which were somewhat stale) which came with packets of mustard and sauce, like the ones thrown in with carryout. Not in small bowls for dipping. The waiter started to leave, forgetting to take the order of one person. They seemed to have gone cheap in many ways. No tablecloths, paper carry out napkins instead of linen napkins. The food got cold because the entrees are no longer served in metal bowls with covers to keep the food warm. I had to get up and get my own water refill, also had to get up and ask for fortune cookies (the rainbow sherbert is gone). Our dirty dishes were never taken away in a timely fashion. When I asked for a straw for my ice water, a waitress put in a straw without a paper covering and the part she touched with her hand went into my water. I am worried about what kind of money saving measures they are taking in the kitchen, as they are cutting so many corners in the dining room. Bad service, bad ambience and average or in some cases below average food. read more

We walked in today for the first time and waited forever to be seated and then sat there for over 20 minutes waiting for someone to take our order which never happened. Being a "new" restaurant, the furniture was clearly used and run down and the place was not clean. Many tables were unbussed after customers had left well before we were seated. A huge disappointment all around and I would not recommend this place at all. We walked out and will never return. I don't anticipate it will be open for long. read more

Love that they are back, but there are a lot of kinks that need to be worked out. We ordered takeout on Xmas Eve. It was "ok". Not the amazing food I remember. Orders had to be placed in person as there were not enough people to answer the phones. Food took over an hour and at the recommendation of other customers, I'm flaying checked my order before leaving, as several things were incorrect. I was very disappointed in the General Tso's. We got 2 orders and each order came with a SINGLE piece of broccoli. I noticed portions for those dining in were significantly larger than takeout portions. Overall, I will come back, but I will give it a few months for the kinks to get worked out. read more

Had never been to the original Szechuan House. A friend had, and we thought we would check it out because he loved the original. The menu is expansive. We felt pressured by the server who came up to us every 90 seconds asking if we were ready to order then huffing away when we said that we were not (they were not busy nor did they have people waiting for seats; the menu also strangely states that the server will only ask for your order if your menus are closed). Once we made our decision, the first 2 dishes we requested they did not have the ingredients for, so we had to make quick decisions on substitutes. Received an order of shrimp toast. The fry oil was obviously not hot enough during the preparation as there was a pool of oil on the plate and it was dripping and soggy. My meal came with a miso soup and salad. The salad was a few pieces of lettuce drenched in what tasted like a generic honey mustard dressing and the soup seemed watered down. At that point, we decided to cancel our order and venture elsewhere. Not saying I will not try them again in a few months, but they really need to work out a lot of kinks. read more

This was our first time at the new location. Very disappointed from the beginning, starting with the seating. There's no hostess and non of the employees will make eye contact. There's no distinction between carry out customers or dine in so it's confusing where to stand to get seated. We eventually just seated ourselves after seeing others do the same. Service is simply awful, our waiter took forever to come to our table and when he did he rushed us and was inaudible. But that's ok, we came for the great food that we remembered from the old place. Well so much for that, our food wasn't good! For starters, my won ton soup was luke warm. It was tasty but eating luke warm soup simply sucks. Next we had shrimp rolls which were actually great. They were hot, crispy and had large pieces of shrimp inside. This unfortunately was the highlight of the evening, I wish I would have made a meal of them. Then came my dinner entree, Kung Pao Beef. It was a large portion, but extremely bland and in a brown sauce. The peanuts were uncooked, straight out of the can and thrown on top. It was very disappointing and I just wrote it off as being more like Hunan beef and figured it was just their version of Kung Pao sauce and tasteless. Well when the bill came, to my surprise it said Hunan Beef!!! They served me the wrong dish but unfortunately I didn't say anything from the beginning. So when our waiter came back for the check I brought it to his attention and he mumbled something to the affect of the cook made you Hunan Beef with peanuts. Really??? No explanation, no apology, nothing??? It was done, I ate it and that's all. Such a disappointing experience!!!!! My friend got pork fried rice and said it was bland as well and he was disappointed too. What else can I say, I won't be going back. Some other comments, Mr Robert strolled by our table with his cart dropping off duck sauce and fried noodles. He's such a nice man and a real treasure, I only wish I could say the same about his daughters who run the registers. Also the ambiance is horrible, very bright overhead lighting, generic decor and it was freezing cold inside with cold air blowing. Lastly, and the only saving grace was the cost. The prices are so cheap compared to the other Chinese restaurants in the area. $1.95 won ton soup, $2.25 shrimp rolls and my meal was $11.95. These prices just might keep people coming back! Sadly they no longer offer Sizzling Shrimp!!!! Mr Robert said the steam was too much at the tables. Another disappointment! read more

It will be a cold day in hell when I return to this place. Yes I am fully aware they are still in the process of reopening and things are not going to be fully operational. But as a patron of Szechuan House for many years I was so excited to enjoy it once again. We took my elderly father in law for dinner and we arrived just before 8 pm. It took a bit before we were waited on and our drinks and appetizer came out after about 20 minutes. Then ..... nothing. We sat there for over an hour while everyone around us was served and we never got our main entrees. When we were finally able to flag down our server she had no recollection of even taking our order. She did apologize but at that point, there really wasn't anything that could be said. It's a shame as I was looking forward to trying the food but it was not to be. I hope they get their issues worked out but sadly they have lost a very loyal customer. read more

My wife and I had started going to the original SH we believe 25 - 30 years ago and were very unhappy when they closed. We have been to the new location twice now and I am not quite sure what to make of it. The food is still very good but they have many issues to work out. Last night there were 6 of us for dinner. We went early (5 pm) and were seated immediately. The waiter came over promptly and when we tried to order apps, many of the app items on the menu were not available. We had to ask for the fried wanton strips they used to put on the table as soon as you were seated, and the hot mustard and duck sauce were served in carryout portion packs. We ordered hot tea which did not come until the end of the meal when we reminded them. We all wound up ordering the egg rolls which were very good with large pieces of shrimp. We all ordered our entrees and they came out in a reasonable amount of time. A couple of the entrees were served on dinner plates as was the rice (no individual rice bowls anymore). A couple of the entrees were not hot when they got to the table and when being served we were informed one person's dish was not available. She ordered another which came out fairly quickly. The flavor of everything was very good and fresh! Some of the basics that need help: the decor looks run down, the restaurant is drafty, there is restaurant equipment and construction materials in the back of the restaurant area, and the restroom smells like sewer gas. The Szechuan House is still a favorite and we will go back, but my rating of 4 stars is generous, mostly for the quality of the food and partly for nostalgia. I hope they do the work that needs to be done and look forward to our next visit being a bit better. read more

Szechuan House is now open in their new location in the Timonium Square shopping center on York Road. Just a "heads up" to anyone going there. Had lunch there and it was a bit of a bumpy road. As might be expected in a new restaurant, they are still working out the service and, apparently, the menu. Seated promptly and quickly given our menus and ordered hot tea. Tea arrived in jus a couple of minutes. Long wait for the wait person to come back for our order. Wanted to start with an order of fried crab meat wontons - sorry, we don't have any. Ordered steamed dumplings instead, Wanted to order General Tso's chicken - nope, don't have any. How about sesame chicken - nope don't have that either. Out of some other chicken dishes as well - would I like beef or pork? Ordered sha cha pork instead. My wife ordered chicken & cashews. Both ordered soup. Another long wait before the soup and dumplings - fried, not steamed as ordered - arrived. No dipping sauce for the dumplings so requested duck sauce, delivered in 4 plastic packets. Another wait, and 2 orders of sha cha pork arrive - no chicken & cashews. I start eating and my wife waits patiently and her correct order finally arrives. Food was excellent, and the chicken and cashew order was huge. Had to ask twice for a take-home container. Arrived at 12:20, left at 1:45. They need to pick up the pace or they will have difficulty getting repeat customers. read more

With so many good Chinese restaurants around, the new Szechuan house in Timonium almost has an institutional feel. They delivered the dinner in so many disparate ways that eating became an issue never. Out of all of their forms of egg roll, and wonton soup. We opted for shrimp toast to taste as if it had been rolls and then cooked in motor oil. Heavy, greasy and burnt. The second appetizer scallion cake was never delivered to the table. The egg drop soup was watery. Maybe they were running out and made the pot the father by throwing in an extra gallon of water. The hot tea that we requested never came to the table. We had to ask two times for noodles to go with the soup. They were delivered as we finished the soup. For an entrée we split chicken and eggplant in garlic sauce. There is much better in the Baltimore area. Basically this version was just lacking in taste. The white rice was OK but how can you really screw up white rice? This was neither my fathers Chinese restaurant nor my wife's father's Chinese Restaurant. Has the Chinese restaurant species where you received good food big portions and reasonable prices become extinct. At least in Timonium it has. I know this will be hard to believe but my fortune tonight was "no profit grows where there is no pleasure to be had." There was no pleasure in our dinner tonight. read more

this place was very dirty and disorganized and it took them 10 minutes to seat us when it was basically empty and no one ever came to our table. it said on the menu to shut them for the waitress to come over and that's what we did and no one ever came over. after about 25 minutes and trying to call someone over who said they'ed come right over. we never even got food :/ never coming again! please save your time and money and go to another restaurant! read more
