I've used this company for years. Their strength was their personal service, family owned. I trusted them completely. When I called, the receptionist and I were on a first name basis. Something has changed drastically and for the worse in the last year. Since 2020, they have installed a generator and two separate cooling and heating systems in my home. I've spent literally 10s of thousands with them. Issue 1: They have purchased the world's most obnoxious AI system to answer their phone. Yesterday I called during regular business hours. The AI- 'Rachel' would not put me through to a human, laughed at me (YES!) and insisted it could handle my issue. It literally gets condescending and snarky. Issue 2: The quality of their work has fallen off. New heating installed in September. Turned on in December. No heat to an entire floor. The fans weren't installed correctly. New AC installed last June. Not working. Really? Waiting on service call later this week. Issue 3: Add on charges for everything. For instance, with the AC service call this week, which I am only using them for because they installed it and should be responsible, I was told (even though I purchased a service plan and the system is still under warranty), that it would still be $94 plus for the call if it is something not covered by installation or warranty. The $400 service plan plus $94 would more than cover a call from another company and..... what could it be besides faulty equipment or an installation error like the heating? I had similar issues with generator problem in February. Paid for the service call, he didn't have the part and they wanted to charge a second service fee when he came back. We have worked with T.F. O'Brien since we had our ductless AC system installed in 2021. They did a great job installing the system and in seemlessly coordinating the removal of in-wall air conditioners. In the years since we have had our annual maintenance visit and any work necessary has been done professionally. All of their technicians are knowledgeable and pleasant - never had a problem. They take great care when in a customer's home to be tidy and if anything needs to be moved to access the unit they are working on, it is moved with care and put back when they finish their work. July 6 - August 6 PSEG usage was 31.5% lower than same time last year. August 6 - September 6 PSEG usage was 40% lower than same time last year. T. F. O'brien installed Diakun mini splits in our home in 2015, Invoice stated it had a 12 year warranty on parts, 2 years on labor.. However, when the refrigerant started leaking after the 4th year, we scheduled a service for finding the leak on the system. We were charged $500 for two servicemen to locate the leak. They said they couldn't find it, however, we were still required to pay the $500. I thought the customer service was extremely poor, to have never received a call from the office for any type of remedy of this issue..We continued to have the refrigerant pumped in by another company until we decided to replace the whole system..these units should last between 15-20 years but we got 8 1/2 years. Also, they charge $269 for a service charge, just to walk in the door for a look, which I think is too high. Thankfully we are using another company moving forward! read more

I called T.F. O'Brien because I was having issues with heat not remaining in my radiators on my 2nd floor. A tech came out, drained my system, and changed 3 air vents. I was charged $700 ($150 per air vent WITH A DISCOUNT, when they are $80 for a 3 pack on amazon). The radiators heated up, and the tech left. My instructions were to let the system air bleed at a high temp for a few hours, which I did. Shortly after setting the system to a normal temp of 73, the radiators upstairs were ice cold again within 20 minutes. I'm back to running my electric heaters so my wife and I don't freeze during the night. I called back and said that my original issue was not resolved and did not want to be charged a return visit for labor since this should have been fixed. I said parts I understand, but I'm not paying the base $250 which is ALREADY higher than most other companies. The condensing young man would not guarantee that I wouldn't be charged because the problem could be unrelated to the last visit. I said the last visit's problem was that it doesn't work properly, and it still doesn't work properly, how is that not related!? I explained that I made this issue clear when I made the appointment and when I spoke to the tech. He told me, all it says here is that you were scheduled for a tune up with nothing about my situation. He then told me your boiler might be going out because it's 15-20 years old. I said it's 13 years old, at best halfway through it's expected life span. He then snapped at me "whatever, fine, 13 ok?". Don't add a magic 7 years to my boiler's age to justify your incompetence. All he would do is offer me another weekday appointment and make me miss work another day. I asked for a Saturday appointment now that I signed up for the membership that opens up Saturday appointments. He laughed mockingly when I mentioned it. Good to know the membership is worthless and a scam. I can't warn you enough. Stay away from this company. Whatever reputation they may have earned years ago has been squandered by whoever is running the company now. Very unhappy customer. read more

My 8 year old 3- zone split unit had stopped working. On the first visit August 5th the service rep said he found a leak and added 2 lbs of freon and that the thermistors needed replacing. Two years prior, I had to add 2 lbs of freon. He said that locating and fixing the leak could run in the thousands. $1100 just to look for the leak. That it could be as much as $3000 - $4000 and that the system I had was only good for 10 years (not true, 15 yrs). Considering how much it had cost to install the current system, I asked whether it made sense to do the repairs. That we were planning on adding a 2 zone for another area of the home but it may make more sense to replace the 3-zone with a 5-zone based on his assessment. This was my mistake as it seem the focus shifted from repair to replacing. He offered to have the company do an estimate which I receive 2 days later for $27,000. The cost of the 1st vist was $646.39 which was for the service visit $279 and the balance for the freon. The rep. assured me that I would not have to pay an additional service cost for the repair, just for the cost of the parts which would be around $300. A few days later the company called to set a date for a second visit to effect the repairs. During the call I was told I needed to pay an additional $655.94 which included labor cost. I told him that the rep said all I would pay was the cost of the parts. He said the rep was wrong and that was what it was going to be. This was in the middle of the heat wave here in NY so I had no choice. This left a bad taste in my mouth and I knew I would not want to do further business with the company. The rep was a middle age male who seem to have been with the company for a while so it was a stretch for me to believe he made a mistake. The repair was done on August 12 by another rep, however 2 weeks later the system stopped blowing cold air. On August 27th they sent a different rep to check. He said all the refrigerant had leaked out, that I would have to pay $900 to replace all 7 lbs and $1100 for them to search for the leak. Fixing the leak would entail an additional cost. I declined. I noticed that after he left the system was completely non-functional. Remember it was working before he looked at it just not blowing cold air. My husband who knows a little about HVAC systems was furious. He said there had to be something they did during the repair that caused all the freon to leak out in two weeks. He was finally able to convince them to send a rep to check. During the conversatiin the supervisor kept saying the system was old. TFO then made an appt. without conferring to see my availability. I called to let them know that I could not take another time off that week as I already did for them. Could they change to the Friday instead of the Thurday as it was a day off for me. They said no, that I would have to call back the following Tuesday after the labor day weekend. I decided to get another company and while searching reviews I came upon reviews on Yelp for TFO. They were HORRIBLE and reflected my experience with them. One submitted July 2024 by a customer living in a town 5 miles from me stood out. She had a leak in her split unit and was told she would have to pay $500 for them to search for the leak. Why was I quoted twice that amount less than a month later? Second experience with overcharging. Had to get a new company that was here yesterday to look at the system and found a significant hole in the pipe close to where they attach the machine to add the freon. Also one of the wires in that area was clearly cut. There was no rust or wear on both areas so it was recent. The serviceman said it is next to impossible for the third rep from TFO not to not have seen the hole. My husband was right about it being their actions leading to the leak. I did submit a report to the Better Business Bureau and the company response was rife with misrepresentations. They are a morally bereft company with discriminatory pricing practicies. Very unreliable company. I had paid for and scheduled a tune-up of my AC weeks in advance. I arraigned for time off from work because I could only get a 5 hour window for the appointment. A few days in advance they called and said they could not make it and re-scheduled. Took more time off from work and this time....they didn't show at all. Now fighting for my money back. Even though it is mid october, due to the sterilizers and equipment that we use in our practice we use the air conditioning all year round. I explained this to the person I spoke to. RIPOFF ALERT! Called T.F.O'brien about water dripping to the floor from the relief valve on my Burnham gas boiler. They sent a tech "Nick" right away, but they never told me beforehand that there was a "diagnostic charge" aside from any repair charges. I found that out only when he was already here. Problem was only a broken expansion tank but tech installed a new expansion tank AND relief valve. Work took less than 2 hours, was charged $639.65 to install these parts that I only later found out cost only $65 from a well-known supply house plus the $79.50 diagnostic fee just for showing up and $195 for a yearly contract, with tax $993 total. I was told it would have been even more expensive without the contract. The problem was repaired OK but my inquiries reveal that I was taken advantage of and grossly overcharged by this company. 6 years ago we needed a heater/ ac unit for our basement. Figure let's go with someone local. Had a ductless unit installed and 2 weeks ago the lights started blinking. Called TF O'Brien to have a tech come. Was told it's a $250 charge. The unit has a 7 year warranty - well ... $500 after the tech comes we are told the unit was covered but the labor to fix it was $2000. If we signed in for a service contract it would be $1600. Absurd!!! When We called someone else we were told that the Fujitsu unit we have is obsolete- stopped being made 7 years ago. So much for using the local guy. read more

Recently had our hvac unit break down and requested a diagnostic visit with TF OBrien. A technician from this company came by a few days later and assessed/diagnosed the situation. He did not provide a quote before obtaining authorization to work on this unit. After completing the work, technician gave us a price of the work performed, as well as adding the diagnostic fee on top of the labor and cost of parts. I tell him my complaint and he tells me that I can't expect the tech to have every part on the truck. So I said so he can just drive around on off hours with an empty truck and collect service fees all day? Just such a scam to pull on a customer in crisis. Working on my 6th week with no central air conditioning. In the beginning of June, the first technician arrived with an assessment of the problem and a solution. Next came the second technician with a different solution. Finally came the third. And then a part needed to be replaced. The fourth technician came to take a picture of the part that needed to be replaced (even though this company was the one that installed the new unit years ago). I assume now the part has been ordered, but maybe not received yet? Approx. two months later, same issue. A different technician arrived. He inadvertently commented that the first repair wasn't done correctly. However, I received another bill for $167. After I called customer service, I was advised not to pay. Months later, I kept receiving a bill. After calling again and receiving same direction not to pay, I received a collections notice (which I'm challenging). Too many headaches from a second rate company. Do not settle for TF O'Brien. I paid them $6500 to replace my furnace and they did not do anything right - they did not get a permit, wire the unit properly and they left the house with a deadly gas leak. I had an awful experience with this company. I felt taken for granted because I had no idea about my AC unit and the company use that to there advantage. My unit was not working and I used this company 5yrs ago. You would think that they should go over the notes before going to do a job. The service person came in and quickly look at the unit and said I needed freon. I mention to him on there last visit it was mention to me there was a very small leak. He proceeded and fill my unit up with freon. Which cost a pretty penny$$$$ Two days later my unit wasn't working again and all the freon was gone. The company customer service was sub-par awful and didn't accommodate me in any way. They did suggest for me to buy a new "AC UNIT"of coarse $$$$$$ T.F. Converted from oil to gas, and replaced the hot water heater at the same time. Went with TF O'Brien after getting four bids. The price was on the low side, if not the lowest. Brendan, the salesman, was very thorough in his explanation of what would be involved, and the bid covered everything, including removal of two oil tanks. Everything went as scheduled, from the crew's arrival through modifications of the installation and return to clean up some loose ends. The gas line was leaking a bit, but they were right back to fix it. Their response to questions has been quick and comprehensive. I wish I remembered everyone's names. There were several crews involved, but everybody involved was top-notch. And the house is toasty. read more
