As an experienced rider, I was looking for a trail ride that would not be the stereotypical nose-to-tail walking trail ride that is so commonly offered, and this trail ride did not disappoint! We were able to ride in a pack, side-by-side each other. We rode from the ranch, out through a pasture, and up a hillside to the top of the butte. On the butte, they let us experienced riders do more than walk on our horses. Amy, Josh, and Josh were so warm and welcoming and shared some history about the area. Fantastic tour guides, and amazing humans. My friend and I were visiting Colorado for about a week, and Amy gave us some recommendations of additional things to do/see while we were in the area, as well. Next time I make it back to Colorado, I would absolutely go back and visit Platte Ranch again. Cannot recommend this place enough for those looking for a truly awesome riding experience in the mountains!!

I cannot say enough good things about this amazing place. I have been riding most of my life and…read moreusually do not get excited about your typical nose-to-tail trail ride. But I still enjoy horses and being out in nature so much that I try to go when we are on vacation just for fun. This place is anything but a nose-to-tail trail ride. The horses were all fantastic, the wranglers were very friendly, very informative, and amazing at their job, and the scenery was breathtaking. I would almost go back to Colorado for another vacation just to go riding here again. I cannot recommend it enough!!! Not only was the ride amazing, and the scenery too, but our trail guides were the very best. They engaged with each one individually, tried to learn a little about each of us and made sure everyone was having a good time, that we were all comfortable, and they let us know several times to just ask if there was anything we needed. It was fabulous!

Mega Mountain Magic - SEP09 - Full Day Ride

We were in a small group of four, plus our awesome wrangler Stephanie, and had a solid three + hours on horseback all the way to the top of the Rockies to an amazing panoramic view. The horses were healthy, sturdy, and well trained with only minimal snacking on grass when allowed by the novice riders. The tack was in good shape and not shoddy or worn at all. Our wrangler was personable and kept conversation going. Best of luck to you and your travels, Stephanie! The ride had many breathtaking moments, from the Aspen forests to the pines, to fields with wildflowers and old abandoned log cabins, and of course the views of the mountains. Be prepared to get a few scrapes and cuts from unkind branches of pine trees that will get in your way no matter how hard you try to out-maneuver them! I was a bit dismayed to learn that it was to be a walking tour only, and this is the only reason why I docked a star as this info wasn't entirely clear to me before I booked the tour. Although there isn't much space that is horizontal enough to go running (most of the ride is steep up or downward pitch), I was really hoping to get a good ride in. However, I learned that this is normal for riding in this area - apparently a different license is needed for ranches that allow anything more than a steady walk. So, if you are an experienced rider hoping to use those skills, please be aware of this.

I signed up for a full day ride back in September of 2009. I was by myself and they grouped me…read morewith another couple, so there were 3 of us, plus the guide. We trailered the horses and headed to a trailhead nearby for the full day - stopping for lunch in a beautiful meadow. I believe they provided a couple bottles of water, sandwich, Capri-suns and some trail mix, as well as rain ponchos. Being late September, I was hoping for more color and Aspen groves, but this ride was mostly through pine forest - the guide mentioned that the 1/2 day ride may actually have better scenery, but I was very happy with the full day. A lot of our ride followed the Colorado Trail and we saw one hiker the entire day. I think it would be really cool if they took you to some old ghost towns or abandoned mining areas, which are pretty abundant in the area.
