I'm convinced that Tablas has the best wine in California. They grow all 14 main Rhône varietals and are the sister winery of Chateau Beaucastel, specializing in Châteaneuf-du-Pape! Their vines literally came here from France. So cool. I believe they then became a nursery and started sharing their vines with other Paso growers. If you're looking for phenomenal Old World wines at incredible prices, don't miss Tablas Creek. The service was outstanding, Eveline behind the bar was born and raised in the Rhône Valley and is a sommelier! We loved every single wine we tasted but left with the Counoise and their Chateaneuf-du-Pape style blend. Absolutely beautiful, intentional, nuanced wines. I loved every single one. read more

My new favorite label! This is the place to go if you enjoy blends. As other reviewers have pointed out, it's a bit on the pricey side, but this isn't your run-of -the mill zinfandel stop. It's a bit of a traditional winery- they grow 13 varieties of grapes using some traditional methods along with the science-- all on carefully selected terrain. The result is consistently excellent wine- both reds and whites. My husband and I received a membership as a wedding gift and it has been a pleasure to try something new and different each time. I never get bored! If you are looking for something different than the typical Zins and Merlots, get off the beaten path and check this out! read more

AUGUST 3rd 2013. Took my BRO and folks to PASO. This was our 2nd stop. We enjoyed the ZINS at TURLEY. This place had nice grounds and it's in a beautiful area of PASO through the tree laden VINEYARD RD. It was a place a co worker recommended. They are known for their French style blends. Most of the grapes used were ones I never heard of. Many Wineries just have the usual CAB, ZIN, PPINOT , MERLOT. Not here. I like when a place goes for something different. The first 2 whites I didn't care for. We were talking about whites and my MOM said she liked SAV BLANC and the pourer overheard us and came over and said I have something I want you to try. She said her mom loves this blend they have called VERMINTINO. SO she runs to the back room and brings out this white that's not on the tasting list. I was so bummed out by the first 2 whites that I passed and asked to get right to the reds. My MOM was freaking out how good the VERMINTINO was so I reluctantly sipped her sample. WOW! UNREAL! WHOLLY BEJEEZUS! I must say I was more than impressed. the VERMINTINO was probably my fav of the day and in my top 5 of all time favorite wines. It was clean and crisp prefect for a hot summer day outside on your patio. They use stainless steel so it has that clean refreshing finish. The rest of the tastings were not bad. The wine was low in tanins but because the VERMINTINO was so full of MAGICAL GOODNESS the rest of them seemed pale in comparison. I bought two bottles of the VERMINTINO and I know I will be stocking up on some of those in the future. I gave this place 4 stars because of the Vermintino. What a beautiful drive up Vineyard Drive. A visit to Tablas Creek is worth it for the scenery alone. Fortunately, I'm a big fan of Rhone-style wines, so the tasting was definitely worth it as well. We got there early - we thought right when it opened, but there were already a few people tasting. The tasting room is somewhat small, but then again, this isn't Napa. There were only two small tasting counters, but there was lots of merchandise besides the wine to purchase. There was a $10 tasting fee for 7 wines, but it was waived with purchase. Our server was friendly and thoroughly explained everything, including the Vermentino and Granache Blanc wines, two ones that I'd never seen before. The Vermentino is a white Italian grape and the granache blanc is a separate varietal - not just a white wine made from a red grape. (Visited October 2008, Harvest Wine Weekend) Tablas Creek only had about 1/3 of its sizable catalog of wines available for tasting when I visited, so I may have a fairly limited view. However what I did have was mostly Rhone varietals, and several of these had more "old world" nuances to them than many wineries I hit in Paso, which I actually thought was a nice change of pace at that point. At least that's the short version. Anyway of nine wines, I liked or really liked six, with the star for me being the 2006 Mourvedre. But great wine, staff, and a beautiful winery make this a definite stop. Beyond that, I think that many of the wines here might give many people a taste of something they might not see elsewhere nearby, and they'll probably find they like it. read more

We visited six wineries over the weekend and this was our favorite! The setting is luxurious and I enjoyed the way they brought out many tastings at once so that we could compare and revisit. They had a large variety of tastings too, in both red and white. They have many precautions in place that keeps the visitors and staff safe. We felt very spoiled with the hospitality and added bonuses; they offered an individualized cold water container. We were able to try additional pours. My family and I went wine tasting through Paso Robles for the first time this past weekend for good wine and a good time. Tablas Creek was our second stop. The outdoor patio area seemed busy, but we walked right in and got set up with Jennifer. Between my family, we know very little from wine, and then there's my husband who knows a little more. Jennifer took her time in explaining their wines, processes, differentials, asked about our preferences on wine, just overall incredibly knowledgeable and super friendly and approachable. The wines were good and we ended up walking away with a Rose (which we usually never buy), and are considering joining their wine club to taste more (we're located in Sac), but honestly it was our experience with Jennifer that would keep us coming back! Lovely tasting room with outdoor picnic area. They don't sell food, so they allow you to bring food onsite. We lovely their Grenache - Syrah - Malbec blends, particularly the esprit de tablas. We also enjoyed the tannat. They charge $15 a tasting and you can split that between two. If you buy a certain amount, they comp your tasting. Not your average Paso Robles vineyard and tasting room. Tablas Creek has been a leader in bringing French varietal root stock to the US and has waited patiently for each of their varietals to pass the quarantine period (8 yrs?). The wait has been worth it for the what they have grown to date. They are still waiting for more but are well on their way to producing great Rhone style wines here in Paso. Tablas is near the far North West corner of the Paso vineyards and the isolated location has its drawbacks as their is little phone service out here (so no Yelp check in). But once you arrive you will enjoy your experience if you enjoy French style reds and whites. That means no big fruit bombs here. You will get terroir, minerally, drier wines with more complexity. If you are used to California wines, beware and come with an open mind. If you enjoy good wines, your taste will likely "develop" and this wine will grow on you. If you are already there and enjoy French wines and finding Paso wines too sweet for you, by all means come here. Tip 1: I highly recommend scheduling the vineyard tour held every weekend at 10:30 AM and 2:00 PM. It will help you appreciate Tablas so much more. The walking tour is hosted and free and they take small groups no problem. After the tour, your group gets a private tasting. A great way to end the tour. Tip 2: 2012 was the last year they did 100% dry farming. You will taste the difference in the wines before and after this time. 2012 and earlier wines will be more concentrated. Enjoy! read more

We had a very nice experience at Tablas Creek. We had made an outdoor reservation but because it was a little cooler of a day they offered to seat us at the inside bar. I am so glad we got to be inside! They have a beautiful tasting room that you face huge barrels of wine that is aging. The outside patio was very nice as well, I don't think you can go wrong either way. The hospitality was excellent and the wines were good. Our server, Dusty really knew the wines and made sure we enjoyed our experience. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a visit to this winery. read more

One of very few tasting destinations we planned for a two day trip, unique from the others. We were interested specifically in their Rhone connection, and our host had the wealth of information as enjoyable as the tasting. Sometimes if you really like a place or a person you want them never to change. You want that first flush of love to warm your cheeks and race your pulse weeks, months, and years after that initial thrill of discovery. And you feel cheated with things change, when the person starts to age, or the place begins to grow and attract new admirer to its charms. But the truth is that if you love something or someone, you want them to be alive and ever-changing, not encased in amber-crusted memory. You may love that winter wonderland trip to Yellowstone or that September weekend in Paso when you first tasted Tablas, but you must let these places be themselves and appreciate the changes of attitude and seasonal shifts of style that are bound in a lifetime to take place. My first visit to Tablas really was kind of magical; a perfect fall day, a 3-hour long visit, a picnic lunch, a tour of the vineyards, and a wine club membership that we cherished and that has left our cellar stocked with a few prized 2007 bottles of Esprit de Beaucastel and Panoplie. A second visit a few years later was marred by an overcrowded and understaffed tasting room, with time spent only to buy a half case of Cote de Tablas reds and whites before moving on to Justin, where the atmosphere was far more amenable to tasting, picnicking, and admiring a well-made wine (a half bottle of Isosceles, in that case). But that was before Justin was sold to a multinational and before Tablas dramatically expanded their tasting room and outdoor seating facilities, before they added their pitch-perfect Patelin line of exquisite under $20 table wines by sourcing Rhone grapes from other Paso growers. These changes greeted us on our third visit, one we took with a wine club friend and committed Tablas enthusiast. The tasting room style is well thought out, with small rooms set up for accommodating groups of 2-10 tasters rather than one gigantic bar or interior space; it's like dining at a restaurant with your own pourer preparing the meal. Our pourer went out of his way to helps us, opening a few extra bottles of whites not on the menu, chatting about the effects of the drought on wine yields and grape quality (small crops, great concentration of flavor), and helping us arrange purchase of a superb single varietal Marsanne and a Patelin de Tables red blend, which we liked even better than the estate-only bottling from that same vintage year (2013), although the older vintage Esprit reds (2011 and 2012) were outstanding; I prefer the lean, less exuberant 2011s than the full-flavored, ebullient 2012s, but it was great to have both side-by-side in the tasting as a kind of litmus test for one's taste buds and wine preferences. Complimentary ice-chilled metal water bottles were available at the front entrance, for use during one's visit, and left behind in a basket upon departure. The gift shop and barrel rooms were beautifully designed and the noise levels were cathedral-like, soft tones, clinking glasses, very fine ambiance and well shielded from the 90 degree sunlight outside. This third visit to Tablas sealed the 5-star deal that we made in 2009 - the same high quality, just not the same wines or place. The Westside wine trail is extremely attractive for the adventurous traveler, with sinuous backroads, superb wineries, and sensational landscapes, but Tablas retains its pole position in the growing Formula 1 line-up. Justin's sale to Fuji water makes it less appealing to me than it was before, and the Swiss billionaire backing behind Halter Ranch still puts me off until the on-site operators have carved out their own niche for those unspoiled acres and those well-tended vines. Kukkula is so full of potential to outshine even Tablas at the small-production, artisan level that one's mind trembles at the possibility; should its winemaker add to the Rhone-heavy lineup of highly extracted wines by branching out into Italian, South American, and Iberian varietals, like Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Tanat, or something out there like Nero d'Avola, then his Chimney Rock, walnut and olive tree studded outpost will make the perfect expressionistic pairing to the classical lines and Old World heritage wines proffered by Neil C. and the Haas family at Tablas. All told, reasons enough to put the Paso Robles westside in that rare category of must-see microclimates, alongside the Santa Cruz Mountains and Santa Rita Hills, or excellent hillside vineyards in the Dry Creek, Edna, and Anderson valleys. See what you think - Tablas is clearly part of the new California wine royalty, but that doesn't mean that it can't be one of your friends: a friend who is constantly changing with the tasting times, but one you won't be able or willing to forget. read more

Great time taking the tour, especially during harvest season! We saw the grapes all mashed and sitting in these huge containers, got to sample wines aging in the stainless steel and oak barrels. Our guide was one of the winemakers here and he was very knowledgeable and down to earth. He encouraged us to ask all our questions, be it novice or advanced. After the tour, we went into the tasting room, but at that point, the tasting room hours were technically over. One of my favorite little vineyard!!! Tablas flight of tasting was excellent. Everything was balanced and smooth. When we were curious about the other wine they had that was not on the tasting list, the lady was very generous and allowed us to taste more without charging us extra. The lady also gave us an extra wine glass to take home (one for me and one for my bf) while waiving our tasting fees. Yay!!! We won't have to fight over the wine glass!!! Tablas member pricing was great too. Most winery give you 10-15% discount with membership while Tablas offers up to 25%. Lastly, they had a pretty little garden that was nicely landscaped. Have to say that Tablas has become one of my favorite wineries in Paso. We've been coming here over the past few years..the first time I came here I didn't love the style of wines but as my taste buds have evolved over the years, I have come to appreciate how yummy the Tablas wines are. We also took a trip to the Rhone region so have really come to appreciate Grenche / Syrah blends. Tablas carries both blends and varietals and we've been lucky to try various wines. The Patelin de Tablas is an excellent table wine that is quite inexpensive. We love the Tanat and Mouvedre and Syrah. Esprit de Tablas is also quite a lovely wine. There's also a new pinot noir that my friends enjoyed which I did not love. Each time we've visited, our wine pourers have all been incredible knowledge Tablas wine as well as wine in general. There is a big binder full of information that you can read if you so please. What's nice is on the website there is a vintage chart telling you the optimal time to drink your wine. On our last visit, we were helped by Gustavo who was so incredibly informative. We had a group of seven and Gustavo was incredibly patient with us and helping us determine what wine to purchase. On our tour of the wineries, lot of places had signs saying "appointment only". Some of these fitted us in (small party), some couldn't do a tasting but welcomed us for a glass of wine, some politely declined our custom often recommending other wineries. Only one was rude and snarky. The hosts opening comment of "can't you read" set the tone. No idea what the wine is like, but we left with a vinegary taste in the mouth. read more

Tablas Creek produces some of the highest quality wines in all Paso. No super jammy Zins, watered down Pinots or flat whites here. They specialize in Rhone blends and they do it very well. The grounds of the estate are pretty and the tasting room a decent size. It has a classy feel to it, not a "fun for big groups" type of party feel, but an ambience that works for serious wine enthusiasts. The pourers are quite knowledgeable and are helpful explaining the different blends. And the wine? High quality, complex wines with great body and beautiful notes. I liked many of them so much I even walked, no stumbled away with a wine club membership. The wines are in the $30+ and may be a bit much for the casual drinker. But if you know your wines and want excellent Rhone-style blends, Tablas Creek is highly recommended. read more

This place has become a staple for Paso Robles. They've become so popular that they've had a hiring boom. Because of that, you don't always get the knowledge that you would get from other wineries. Sadly we arrived as a group of 8 at 1:30 on July 4th and we were turned away because of no availability. Yet, there were only 10 patrons on the property & dozens of empty tables. After an amazing experience at Daou, we were looking forward to a highly recommended experience at Tablas. We tried to suggest breaking our party up to 4 and 4, but we received an absolute "no" response by the unwelcoming hostess . This was disappointing to say the least! I wanted to like this place, I really did. But, as another reviewer stated if you like reds, this is probably not the place for you. My trip to Paso was about reds, so this place was a bit of a disappointment for me. The tasting room was nice but crowded. There were actually kids running around the tasting room... Who brings kids wine tasting? They have a slick system where you are greeted, asked if you are here for a tasting and if so they find you an available pourer. I liked this, it eliminates walking in and trying to find room at the bar and hoping someone will serve you. The place is also dog friendly. I saw a gentleman come in with a Boxer and they had treats for the dog. The lady doing our pourings was very nice and talked about each wine, but I was just not finding anything that stood out, nothing was all that memorable. Finally we got to a Rousanne which was actually well balanced, not too sweet, no too tart and I decided this warranted buying a bottle to try with food. This was a pleasant tasting, but I'll probably skip it on our next trip to Paso, as their wines are not what I am looking for. If you are looking for whites I'd encourage you to give them a try. read more

One of the least outstanding and most hyped wineries I've had the oppurtunity to visit. Their white wines are nice, but the customer service was rather pretentious and not at all willing to provide any information about their wines, even on what was a seemingly slow day. For a vineyard that claims to produce "Rhone Style" wines, many of their wines hover around 14.5% ABV, which is certainly not food-friendly. Their flagship "Esperit de Beaucastle" is a nice wine, but for 50$ a bottle, it's certainly not worth the price and at 14.5% ABV probably not suitable for pairing with anything short of a pepper steak or Boef Bourgignon. Each time we've gone, we've received great service and came out of our tasting feeling more in love with their wines than ever. This trip far exceeded our expectations. Not only due to the wines that we sampled, but to our lovely French tasting guide, Evelyn. She was warm, charismatic and so knowledgeable about Tablas Creek. I am a lover of rose. Having spent many summers in Provence and St. Trope, drinking rose is a norm. Evelyn shared with us some very special roses and even a super special one on the house! She was so passionate when speaking about each wine and the regions where they came from in France, such as Lyon and Avignon. She made me want to go back to the south of France that instant! I loved all the wines I tasted here, so much so that I decided to join their wine club. I'm not usually a white wine fan, but their white rhone blends were a red wine drinker's white wine. Their reds, however were awesome. I loved their En Gobelet and Tannat wines, but my favorite is still their flagship Esprit de Beaucastel, made in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape style. They have a partnership with the French Chateau Beaucastel and their Grenache/Mouverdre/Syrah plantings actually use the cuttings from the French winery in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. They comped us our tastings since we joined the wine club, but they normally comp your tasting anyway if you buy a bottle. They let you keep the glass if that matters to you (I actually don't care too much about getting free glasses, since I have nice glasses at home anyway). The winemaker here is the same one from Lone Madrone but I preferred the wines here, perhaps I prefer the traditional old-world style. This place is definitely a must-go if you're ever in the Paso Robles region, probably one of the best (if not the best) winery in the area. read more

This was our favorite winery in Paso! Almost all wineries in the area are dog friendly, but Tablas Creek was the only one we visited where we were allowed to bring our dog inside! They even gave her water and a special dog treat. The tasting area was modern and beautiful. The lady pouring our wines was very friendly and let us try some wine-club only wines because some of the other tasters were wine club members. The retail area had some great items. We bought some of their estate-harvested olive oil. The wines were all great - we walked away with a few bottles. My favorite was a white that is supposed to pair well with sushi, but I can't remember the name. It got consumed before we ever made it out for sushi, so if anyone from the winery can tell me the name of the wine, I will gladly buy it again! The only odd thing is that they don't allow outdoor tastings there, despite the fact that they have a beautiful patio. They say it's due to some local ordinance, which seems odd to me. "If you only like Reds, your out of luck here." That is what we heard from our pourer as Mr. Baker asked about reds. What a way to start off the tasting. Tablas prides itself on their French wines, which I really like. I'm a huge fan of the Rhone varietals and blends. It's seems the French snobbishness is included with the wines and the tasting. I have a hard time with places (there are many) who seem to be a little unbelieving when you are oozing pleasure with their wines. The pourers themselves will project that it is you and not the grapes. Half the reason I got into wines was the personal intimacy with your taste(s). Like I have liked to say for years "One mans pile of shit, is another man pile of gold". Here, I heard the ultimate "It has to be you" line: Me - "I'm not smelling or tasting anything" Pourer - "It must be you lost your taste for the day." This comment happened on the last wine taste, a white. For some reason, the last taste was a white. At all the places I've been to, they start you off with whites, then reds, then dessert/sweet/ports for the finish. WOW!! Ok dude, just for the record, we went to Adelaida right after and guess what?? All of our tastes some how magically came back!! It's a miracle!! Sheeeesh!! I ran the gambit on the menu. I have to admit, they were real good. Like I said before, I like French wine and I'm even getting into whites, French whites. So it was kinda in my alley. I felt bad for the Bakers. They are strict reds; American Reds and big on Merlot. So they weren't very happy, plus the comment didn't help much. Finally came to visit the reputable Tablas Creek. This is a must stop winery in Paso Robles. Their vines were imported from France and their wines definitely taste like French wines. I don't drink French wines very often, but when I do drink it, I do enjoy it as it has a more sophisticated taste. Not big bold flavors like California wines. All reds and whites were to my liking, which is not very common when I visit most wineries. Would even consider joining their wine club. The staff was knowledgeable and helpful in explaining each varietal that we enjoyed our tastings. In the end, we picked up a bottle of the Cotes De Tablas Blanc (blend of Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne). Surprisingly, it was a twist top. read more

We were looking forward to this place as it was on several recommended winery lists for the region. Since we generally like Cote-Du- Rhones, we thought we would walk away with a couple of bottles. The drive here and to Justin's was by far the most scenic wine country drive I've experienced. The area was very natural with many small rolling hills and winding, tree-lined roads. It had a rural beauty that's been mostly lost at Napa and the landscape is naturally more beautiful than Russian River Valley and even the scenic Carneros region of Sonoma. I would come back again just for the drive! When we arrived at the winery, we found a small tasting room which was bright with 2 small counters for tasting. The staff was a bit serious, seemed a bit uncomfortable and had very low energy. The interaction was a bit awkward. Since Rhone grapes are not as common, as you taste the wines, they actually provide pictures of the grapes from which the wines were made and a brief description of the grapes. This is a fantastic winery, both in terms of service/knowledge of wine, but most especially because they have what I'm always on the hunt for: blends and varietals that I've never had before, and, in this case, never even heard of before. Our pourer/explainer was Sylvia, who was charming, knowledgeable and made very appropriate recommendations once she knew what we liked and wanted. Back to the varietals and wine: they have, quite simply, what no one else does, and it's all high quality. The Tannat, along w/some others, is like no other wine I've tasted, and I was so pleasantly surprised we joined the wine club and bought some on the spot. The depth of their product line is, to say the least, bracing. The facilities are gorgeous, it's relatively and nicely remote and removed from most other vineyards/wineries (you have to want to come here, you're not likely to stumble upon it randomly) and their wine club has great benefits. It's like they're actively seeking to become more involved with their customers, both socially and educationally, and there isn't even the slightest whiff of exclusivity or snobbery. They know they're onto a great thing, they'd like to get the word out, and their products make that incredibly easy (and delicious) Do yourself a favor if your seriously interested in serious wine: get off highway 46, forget wineries that look like castles, drive past the signs for the more well-known producers and take time to get up in the hills to Tablas Creek. The Holy Grail of Rhone's in Paso...? Just maybe. I've had a few Chateau Beaucastel's in my time & covet these epic Châteauneuf-du-Pape's with deep reverence. Knowing that not only the owners, rootstock, winemakers & style all originate from there made this a must see stop in Paso & on the 1st stop of our 2nd day it certainly did not disappoint. Could not find a SINGLE wine that we did not almost immediately want to have a case of to schlep home. It was actually hard to keep our order under 3 cases knowing that we had at least a dozen wineries left to visit. If you like your wines with a slight tanic backbone, a bit less residual sugar, a good deal more minerality, and something that can actually lay down for a few (10+years even) years longer than the typical Californian/New World red, this is your new wine Mecca. Tablas Creek tasting room is a magical place. We visited today and also last year and took the vineyard tour...what a treat!! The grapes originate from vine cuttings brought to the United States from the Rhone region of France and are certified organic. The variety of wines offered at Tablas Creek is unlike any other winery we have visited. Both the whites and the Reds are incredible!! As you enter the doors of the tasting room, there is a big tub filled with ice and scores of small stainless steel thermos bottles containing ice cold water (free of charge). If you have your own water bottle there is a filtered ice cold water dispenser that you can use (again free of charge) to fill your bottle. There is a lovely area outside to sit and enjoy a glass of wine with friends. The highlight for us was the beautiful wines served to us by Gustavo at the tasting bar. Gustavo was knowledgeable, attentive, and took very good care of us. The entire experience was memorable and sweet. I highly recommend Tablas Creek Winery when you visit Paso Robles!
