This place has my favorite pita sandwiches in the city because they have such a variety of flavors, they're unique, and consistently great (no dry meat here!). I have gotten the chicken shawarma pita, pulled pork pita, braised lamb shawarma pan, warm kale salad, and on my most recent visit, the kruveet pita. My favorite flavor has to be the pulled pork pita because the apple/jicama slaw adds such an interesting and refreshing flavor to the hearty pulled pork that melts in your mouth. I am also such a sucker for roasted cauliflower & eggplant (kruveet) and the marriage of all the veggies and tahini is really something beautiful, so the kruveet is also a fave. The kale salad is great for a light meal, their hummus is awesome. They are SUPER generous with the pita stuffing and I always leave happily full. What the heck happened here? A year ago this was one of the most delicious and fresh tasting take-out meals I've had in the city. This place is awesome. Sure, the wait can be long, the service is a bit cold, and it's on the pricier end of things, but wow, the food is just fantastic. I've ordered delivery (which by the way, is impossibly fast) and eaten in and the quality is unparalleled in both instances. The shakshuka pita is so flavorful and surprisingly not soggy, and the egg is this beautiful runny thing that pairs well with the tomato and cheese. I've also had the pulled pork pan and pita and both were just spectacular. The pulled pork is so moist (sorry, I hate that word too) and just maintains this smoky rich BBQ flavor so well. Paired with a jicama-apple slaw and the tastiest vermicelli yellow rice (or a pita), it's a perfectly filling, almost healthy meal. Delicious. If you order a pita and eat it in the restaurant, they give you a complimentary side of potato chips. I had the most amazing kebab sandwich ($9.80) here. The eggplant in it takes it to another level and the meat is perfectly seasoned and melts in your mouth. All of the flavors go so well together and you can taste the good quality of ingredients. It came with a small amount of chips and a spicy green herbal sauce (wish I knew the name). Checked in on 10/1/2016. Tried 2 dishes: 1) Chicken Shawarma pan with yellow-vermicelli rice - did not like the dish. Rice was dry and clumped together. Salad was ok, not a big fan of grape tomatoes. Chicken was dry and slightly overcooked. I would have preferred it spicier. They gave a green hot sauce on the side, but it was more oily than spicy. 2) Falafel Hummus bowl - this was better than the Chicken pan. But there was too much hummus drowning out the few pieces of falafel. The pita was very good, soft and warm. If I had to pick the most positive thing, it would be the plain Falafel without the other items in the bowl. Service was nothing mention-able. Just like any other semi fast-food joint. Taboonette was a good experience and satisfied my craving for shawarma. I ordered the Chicken Shawarma Pan which comes in 2 sizes and is served with Chef's spice mix, chopped salad, pickles, tahini and hummus. This is served in a mini skillet was a good size. The only improvement that would have made this dish better would be if it was served at a higher temperature. We also tried their Roasted Corn which was served with chili aioli, sesame and rolled in parmesan cheese. Their Pita Chips with Tazaziki Hummus was also a good addition to the meal. I've been here several times, and each time I always order the chicken shawarma platter. I'll consider ordering something else when I feel a little more adventurous! The first time I ordered it, the chicken was dry. I really needed the hummus to moisten it up. The following times I ordered it, the chicken was perfect. I enjoyed the flavors of each element of the platter. The cucumber salad complemented the boldly flavored chicken and roasted potatoes. The coolness and acidity of the salad really balanced it out. The hummus was great too. In case your chicken is dry, it's there to make it go down easier. I like the rice too - it's fragrant and comes with these tiny noodle-like strands of something unknown. I decided to give it a try on a recent Saturday night around 6:30, and was surprised by how tiny it was! They have two long-ish communal tables as well as some bar seating, and both options were almost all full when I got there. They have a few different menu options ranging from pita sandwiches in the $9-10 price range, pans in the $11-14 price range, hummus bowls, and sides (such as hummus). There were a multiple options that tempted me, but I decided to go with the Kruveet pan ($12), which included roasted cauliflower, eggplant, hummus, tahini, arugula, and rice (I subbed in quinoa for an extra $1.50). It was very, very good. I loved that it came in a metal pan rather than on a plate. It kept the food really warm. They had some pretty tasty looking cookies for dessert as well, so I'll have to try one next time I go back. I work in the Union Square area so though it's a bit pricey to be an everyday lunch option, it's definitely worth checking out. I loved it! read more

Probably some of the best Middle Eastern food I've eaten in the city. A little put off when I first came in a little after 2pm because dinner prices were already in play, whereas lots of other places still have lunch at 4pm, but the food was worth it. Ordered the recommended Lamb Kebab, which completely mystified me at first because the lamb comes more like patties instead of on a stick like I was expecting, but it was delish! It was very well-seasoned and they generously give you three patties. The plate also came with grilled eggplant, rice, cucumber and tomato salad, and a dollop of tahini, all of which were very natural and criminally good. Can't forget the chimichurri sauce on the side either. You can also pick whether you want brown or yellow rice. Even though together it doesn't look like a large amount of food, it is surprisingly filling. Service is very friendly and receptive, music on the rather loud side, and decor is tasteful. I think someone here has some pretty advanced taste buds. We had delivery from Taboonette- again maybe we change this review once we actually experience the restaurant. But our experience was actually pretty great. We had the pork plate, the lamb/beef plate, and the chicken shawarma plate, along with the falafel. Loved, loved, loved the pork. It was like a deconstructed pulled pork, Mediterranean style. I'm from the South so there was a good chance I was gonna hate this dish but it turned out to be the star of the show. The lamb/beef plate was also quite tasty, tender and, most important of all, juicy... The chicken, which we thought was our "safe" dish, turned out to be the "dud" (bit tasteless). The falafel I could also take or leave. But overall, very impressed with the taste profile of the dishes. We'll certainly order from these guys again. read more

Taboonette does a few things right, but there is still a lot to be desired. First off, the prices on their PDF menu on their website are dramatically different from their in-store ones. I ordered the falafel platter which online is only $8, but when we arrived at the store found it to be $11.75. I know they can charge whatever they like, but at least keep your website current! The platter was fine, but nothing came out of the kitchen piping hot. The rice was dry, and the tahini was a little bland. The falafels were tasty though, as were the pickles. (See pic.) I also ordered the homemade mint lemonade, which also had other herbs steeped in it. One of which was sage, and it overpowered the entire drink. I couldn't get more than a few sips down before tossing it. I asked yelp where I could find good shawarma and they sent me here. I like to eat low sodium and Shawarma places can use way too much. Not here though. It kind of hit me like healthier shawarma but seasoned very well. They also have my food ready promptly when I got there for takeout and the food was still warm which doesn't happen a lot with takeout.
