So we live in the neighborhood and we decided to come here for restaurant week . I love to make Mediterranean food I studied under the best people. So we come in. Straight away the place is empty. We're seated at the worst table in the empty place. The worst right by the stairs where I'm surely going to be bumped into every few minutes. Table was rickety as were the chairs. Hostess didn't know anything about the menu. We sat for maybe 10 minutes before we were given warm tap water. Another 10 minutes and nothing. We had reservations as well. Came for restaurant week and it was so nice seeing the portion sizes didn't change and a good variety on the menu. I started with the saffron shrimp, had the lamb shank for my main and ended it with the warm brownie for dessert. I also tried their torshitini cocktail which was on the savory side but very delicious. Saffron shrimp was great and I loved the bread to help finish up the sauce. I went with my wife to Kubeh for a weekend dinner over Hanukkah and had a solid experience. We were able to get a table immediately even without a reservation. Our service could have been better, as when my wife dropped a fork and asked for a new one, our server seemed to imply that my wife had stolen it. We felt like we received somewhat icy service after that for the rest of the meal. The food mostly came out in a timely manner. We started our meal by getting the latkes (a Hanukkah special) and the tahdig. The latkes were OK although nothing noteworthy, and there needed to be more labneh/sour cream and less applesauce. I liked that the tahdig came in small cups, although it needed to be crispier on the bottom. I got the Kurdish Siske with Persian rice chicken broth as my main dish with za'atar pita. The broth was hearty and delicious, although the dumplings were a bit dense. The za'atar pita was warm and fluffy, and went well with the soup. Had a really nice brunch at Kubeh. I went for the shakshuka with feta and the Benedict-latkes, and both hit the spot. The shakshuka was warm, comforting, and the feta added a nice salty-creamy kick that cut through the tomato and egg base. We had the Spread appetizer and I prefer my hummus blended to a smoother, creamier consistency but the flavor was nice. (Muhammara: B) - This roasted red pepper dip shines with elegance and is paired with a little bit of oil, walnut, and pomegranate to elevate. A $12 for a pita and dip, this does speak to the west village pricing for food, but I do appreciate that there is progress toward flavor development. I wish the pomegranate flavor was a little more pronounced, and perhaps some flake salt would elevate the taste a long way. (Lamb Shank: B) - This lamb shank is braised well and incredibly tender, and the sour cherry adds a nice contrast to the dish. Had a great dinner at Kubeh last night with some friends! I've walked past this place a million times and always thought it was a fast casual place based on how the outside entrance looks, but was surprised to find how deep the restaurant is and how upscale the food is. We were seated immediately for our reservation and our server was very attentive. We got all three dips to share, and numerous mezze and small plates and there wasn't a bad one in the bunch. I particularly loved the Fattoush salad and the Mediterranean shrimp. All the ingredients of everything tasted fresh and homemade. Only slight issue was how loud the restaurant is. Really great food here. I came with a large group for brunch. For appetizers, my group split the fried halloumi, hummus, muhammara, and watermelon & whipped feta. The watermelon dish was light and summery, with nice herb flavor. The halloumi had a nice texture and came in a very flavorful oil. Kubeh offers a nice combination of beautiful atmosphere, unique food, and nice service. We arrived in the 4-5 pm window when they have their smaller afternoon menu. That was totally fine by us because we were targeting the kubeh, which were available in broth and as fried meze. We went with the Kurdish siske (beef) in hamusta (vegetable) broth, the Iraqi mushroom kubeh in chicken soup, and the seared halloumi to start. They have a few mocktails on the menu, so I ordered a Ramona. Working in reverse: the Ramona was a beautifully complex drink, refreshing and delightfully bitter. Very impressive for a zero-proof cocktail. The halloumi was outstanding, and we especially liked the fried rosemary on top. The kubeh dishes were unlike anything we've had before. I think you have to try them for yourself because I find them hard to capture in words. I preferred the beef kubeh by a small margin, but the mushroom was also very good. The broths tasted like a lot of time and care went into them. The bowls were huge - we were warned, but wanted to try both kubehs and ended up stuffed. If you want a lighter meal, I would recommend choosing one for two people and ordering more mezes (all of which sounded awesome). My friend and I had dinner at Kubeh last weekend and really enjoyed our meal. We shared the fried pea kubeh (sweet pea, dill, potato and garlic) to start. She had the sabich pita (eggplant, hummus, hard-boiled egg, amba, cabbage, tahini, served with paprika fries), which she enjoyed. I had one of their kubeh soups (you gotta order the namesake, right?). Kubeh is a family of dishes (many varieties) of Jewish Iraqi/Assyrian origin, consisting of filled dumplings in a broth. The most common variety I've had is a semolina dumpling filled with meat in a beet broth/soup. So that's what I ordered at Kubeh - their Kurdish Siske (dough filled with slow cooked beef) in their Selek broth (beet, celery, cilantro, beet greens). (If that's not your thing, they also offer Iraqi Vegetable kubbeh - filled with mushrooms - and two other broths. Their Hamusta broth is made from swiss chard, zucchini, lemon and their Persian Chicken Rice Soup from chickpea, carrot, cardamom.) I love the kubeh: delicious, warming, filling! We had a couple of glasses of wine as well (their wine list is varied and interesting), and we enjoyed the ones we ordered. The service was good, and the restaurant is beautiful and comfortable. I started with the Persian Virgin, a thirst quenching mocktail with cucumber juice, zahtar, and lemon. I entered from the 6th avenue entrance and was welcomed by helpful hosts . I like the speakeasy vibe ( not sure if it's intentional or just the layout of the restaurant). I walked through the bar into the restaurant which was beautifully decorated and felt that was transformed elsewhere . Food was good ( thanks for the salmon appetizer recommendation, it was the best Dish I had that evening ). We tasted all the food each person ordered including the eggplant , fish , chicken shawarma, schnitzel. Our server was nice , helpful , attentive . Restaurant Week rolled around again and my friend and I were torn between the usual mix of Italian, French, and "New American", or something less common. We went with the less common and booked a meal at Kubeh. Owing to the chef (and former Chopped champion)'s background, the menu has a lot of pan-Middle Eastern and Persian influence, with the namesake dish a standout. We each went with the pre-fixe, splitting apps of a seared halloumi with honey and rosemary and a mezze sampler (muhammara, hummus, labneh + pita). The halloumi was tender without the honey adding any cloying sweetness, melding well with the richness of the labneh and zest of the muhammara. Both of us went with kubeh for our mains: mine the Kurdish siske kubeh (with slow roasted beef) in a Persian chicken soup, hers the Iraqi mushroom in a swiss chard + zucchini + lemon broth. The kubeh (a filled dumpling) were firm enough to resist falling apart in the broth; the beef filling was excellent though the soup was a little on the bland side. Luckily, a bit of dried lime powder added an extra dimension of flavour. Dessert was split between a chocolate date bar with Turkish coffee ice cream, and baklava.
