We recently hosted an engagement celebration for a young couple near and dear to us at Qanoon, and while we weren't sure what to expect, we were absolutely thrilled with the experience. This small, intimate, and bustling Palestinian spot in Chelsea delivers in a big way. Yes, it is crowded, but that only adds to the vibrant, cozy atmosphere of this charming location. The food, however, is the real star--everything was excellent. We ordered a spread of appetizers to share: the Hummus, creamy Baba Ganoush, flavorful Muhammara, and the spicy Chili and Garlic Shrimp were standouts, along with the unique Cauliflower Fritters and Majaddara Croquette. For the main course, the Musakhan (sumac chicken) was succulent and aromatic, while the Makloubeh and rice were perfectly executed comfort food. We ended the night with Cheesecake and a rich Flourless Chocolate Cake, both of which were fantastic. While the service was a bit spotty and the staff seemed overwhelmed at times, the quality of the food and the warm, authentic atmosphere made it a night to remember. Fried Cauliflower Fritters - you'd think how good could they be? They were that good! Qanoon is such a cute location, we had a lovely experience dining here. They had unique twists on traditional dishes. The mujadarra croquette intrigued me, it was very good. The fattoush was delicious as always. The kibbeh & shishbarak was also delicious. We basically ordered a bunch of apps and shared. The ambiance is beautiful, the seats have traditional Palestinian embroidery and there's a stunning mural on the wall. I am always happy to support my local Palestinian businesses, especially in these times. Our server was standard, nothing stellar but he got the job done! My only complaint about this restaurant are the portions. Everything was incredibly small! The kibbeh came with 2 kibbeh balls, meaning each kibbeh is about $7 (I believe the total was $14). My experience at Qanoon was impeccable from start to finish. They accommodated our group of six with ease (we did make a reservation, but you may have been able to pull off a walk in- not super full when we went). Great for a large group to share dishes mezze style. Our waiter seemed to be holding down the fort for the whole FOH but still managed to be attentive and kind, and was joking with us all night. The food came out quickly and was all delicious. I was so impressed with the details- fresh hot pita, bottles of Palestinian olive oil on every table, and spicy sauces to accompany our food. If I could suggest, do not go for the baked pie on the brunch menu. It is painfully tiny and even with a delightful side of marinated olives, I had plenty of room in my stomach for dessert. It is warm and salty, with a bit of a crisp, so if you're looking for a light bite, I would suggest it. Paired with a mint lemonade which was tangy and a bit sweet, a nice little aperitif (which really could have been advertised better). I was so upset by the portion, I wanted to give them another chance and ordered a knafeh for dessert. And it more than made up for my experience. It was crunchy, sweet, cheesy. The pomegranates and pistachios gave it a nice contrast of flavors and crunch. It even came with a carafe of syrup so you could control the sweetness yourself. Very much recommend that. The place is a bit understaffed so do expect a wait. But they were so kind and jovial despite that. Its well worth a visit a least for the knafeh. The texture and flavor didn't quite seem right, but I liked the sauce. - Tabbouleh ($19) - I enjoyed it, I liked that it was light and lemony, but it was oddly sweet. My partner noted that it seemed like they poured lemonade on it. - Makloubeh ($36) - Both the reviews and the server suggested this one, but we found it to be pretty meh. SERVICE: Good, prompt, no complaints. Refilled our water when it was empty within 5 minutes. AMBIANCE: Nice! We came because it was a lovely summer evening and we wanted to sit outside. Inside is a bit dark, but seems nicely decorated and comfortable. Tables are small and a bit close together, but expected for Manhattan. This was my first visit to a Palestine Restaurant. They had a small, beautiful inside that was lighted with candles all around. For appetizers we had mujaddara croquette and the baba ganoush. We also got the fried kibbeh, musakhan, and knafeh. I really liked how delicious and creamy the baba ganoush was. I really liked the use of pomegranate in the dish. The mujaddara croquette was pretty crispy. I felt like it tasted pretty plain. They didn't put much heat into their dishes which was very disappointing. They offered some chili flakes but to me a sign of a good restaurant is when they can make changes to the original recipes based on people's taste preference. The fried kibbeh was super fried. It was basically ground beef with spices and a side of yogurt. I was expecting this to not be so plain as well but unfortunately it was. For entrees we got a musakhan. The flat bread was good. I did find it weird that the flat bread was under the chicken since it made the bread a bit soggy. We also really liked how the chicken was cooked. The chicken was mixed in with spices and a mixture of onions, pine nuts, and cilantro. Overall, I recommend the musakhan. It wasn't spicy as I would have liked but well cooked/prepared dish. For dessert, we got the knafeh. This was a great knafeh. I liked how it wasn't too sweet. They did give a syrup bottle to help if you wanted to make the knafeh sweeter. I really liked the pomegranate and pistachios on top of the dish. I also really liked how shredded phyllo was so crispy. The waiter was ok. We went on a rainy Saturday for brunch, and it felt like the perfect place to huddle in and enjoy good food. We started with drinks. The watermelon juice was refreshing, and the Arabic coffee with cardamom was wonderfully aromatic. I only wish the coffee came in a larger portion, as it was quite small and I ended up ordering it twice. Next came the dips. flew in friday evening and immediately hit up this spot for dinner and drinks, not realizing it was restaurant week but going for it anyways! $60 was honestly a great deal for an appetizer, entree and dessert. i got the grape leaves, filet mignon and the tiramisu. my cousin got the seared cheese, lamb shank and rice pudding. flavor-wise, everything was phenomenal! the spices weren't overpowering, but very present. everything tasted like someone's mother made it especially for you. i got the palestinian white wine to pair with my meal and it was dry and tart, i'd definitely buy a bottle next time. the service was smooth, and we didn't wait much for food, and we were able to walk in on a friday evening and get seated immediately. Christmas Day, few tables occupied, one wait person who was not particularly welcoming. Considering two main dishes and one dessert, I'd say skip it. I ordered lamb stew. It wasn't the bowl of tender lamb chunks with veggies that I expected but the Mid-Eastern version: a large pile of rice with embedded lamb and veggies, which would have been OK except for the hard, overdone lamb and the hard-to-find promised eggplant. My friend had some kind of gnocchi which were pretty tasteless. Dessert was "Palestinian cheesecake" which, as far as I could tell, consisted of a slice of mozzarella or similar type of cheese coated with seasoned breadcrumbs and fried or maybe baked, so that when you took a forkful you had to untangle the melted cheese that came along with it. read more

It is a good 3.5 star (rounded up) neighborhood option if you're in the area, but probably not a destination. For a light dinner, we shared the mujaddara fritters and the muhammara, and I also ordered a lentil soup. The muhammara was excellent, but the portion was tiny. Came for dinner with 3 friends on Friday night and we had a great time. The restaurant isn't large, but it's very cozy and cute on the inside. We opted to do everything family style. We had an order of the hummus and babaganoush to start. Each one came with a tiny bowl of pita, so we added 2 more bowls of pita so each person can have their own bowl. The pita was fab - pillowy and warm. Both dips were very good. We also had the chili garlic shrimp and the fattoush. The fattoush was fantastic - so refreshing and honestly one of the best I've had. The shrimp was just OK. I probably wouldn't order it again and it didn't feel like it was worth the cost. For mains, we split the braised lamb shank and the roasted chicken. Skip the chicken and get 2 lamb shanks. You will not regret it. The lamb shank was the crowd favorite and I highly recommend it. For dessert, we had the kanafeh and an olive cake. Both were good, but the kanafeh was the favorite of the table. Drinks were kind of pricey and I didn't love that they don't have non-alcoholic options. This was my first culinary experience with traditional Palestinian food outside of my mama's kitchen. The interior is covered in art, tatreez, and the word of Falasteen. We shared the hummus, baba ghanoush, muhammara, and labneh. The pita bread was a bit spongey which is my only critique. The dips were delicious. The tabouleh is the best I've ever had - the lemon confit and pomegranate seeds are now required when I make it. I also tried the roasted eggplant with feta cheese, which is not traditionally made with mushrooms, but was an excellent addition. Meddierainean food with a unique touch from mixing different ingredients and spices different from other restaurants I've tried. Favourites were the cauliflower fritters, roasted eggplant, and kunefe. Their kunefe is the best I've tried in NYC (beat a Turkish restaurant where I last thought was the best) as the phyllo covering is perfectly slow cooked, not burnt at all. Listen, I really wanted to like this place but I didn't. Food was subpar for the price (which was expensive). What really upset me was the service. We were rushed out even though we literally paid the bill and were going to leave after finishing the dessert anyway. We had a reservation for 645 pm and left at 755. The guy literally told us they are super busy even though no one was waiting to be seated. Finally, I'm gonna say this - as a Muslim going to a Muslim restaurant to break fast during Ramdan, I expect to see a plate of dates and water. This is common during Ramadan. Even the cheapest, smallest restaurant do this. This dude gave me 1 date on my plate and I had to ask for two more for my friends who weren't fasting but came to eat with me and partake in Ramadan celebration. That is embarrassing. Overall a great experience! I'd been meaning to try this place for months and it really lived up to expectations. First off I'd like to say the food was excellent! I love middle easter cuisine in general but have never specifically sat down to eat Palestinian food and it did not disappoint. My group of 6 tried about 9 dishes and our favorites were the garlic labneh (a special) and the cauliflower fritters (which we ordered multiple times). The drinks were also great, if expensive! The desserts really shine though. The rise pudding and knafeh and excellent and should be ordered by all groups. The only downsides here are that its pretty expensive for dishes on the smaller side ($80/person after tips) and I had a small issue with service. Nothing crazy, we just had to ask for some things multiple times, and they largely didn't engage with us throughout the meal.
