My husband and I have eaten at Ethiopian restaurants in Miami, Washington D.C. and New York City. It has impressed us how consistent all of these restaurants have been at providing delicious fresh-tasting food! We always order veggie platters and did the same here at Tabor. Everything was fantastic. If I had to pick my absolute favorite of the nine different veggie options we ordered, I would probably go with the beets but that's only if I was forced to pick one, they were really all delicious! The service was also great despite the restaurant being quite busy on a Friday night. We will be here in Baltimore until August and may try to go back once a week :-) read more

I have to note that I did in fact go back on my way out of town and a couple of issues presented themselves. One is the restaurant's tendency to leave the phone off the hook which resulted in a disabled person having to hike to the restaurant up the steep ramp because after half an hour and over 40 attempts I could not get through. In addition, I don't know whether it's a different chef or whether there is inconsistency, but the spices added to my kitfo taste almost raw and too heavy handed. In fact, I may end up having to toss it or cook it, because the spices overwhelm the meat completely and the rawness of them is unpleasant. My favorite Ethiopian spot in Baltimore!! I'm so glad we found this place because it is so good! We got the Baltimore combo with the key wot and was blown away by the flavors of the food, especially the veggies! I was pleasantly surprised by how flavorful the beets were - this will be my new go-to place to overindulge on beets! The service was also stellar, our waitress was very patient and accommodating. We were in between two types of Ethiopian beer and she offered to bring both out to see which bottle we'd like to open. Really knocked it out of the park, overall. This has been our go to takeout during pandemic. I'm sure that if we were eating in person the food would be even better because obviously things get a little soggy by the time they've traveled. We had dinner for 8 here last week and I can honestly say this was my best restaurant experience ever. Was it the company? Absolutely, but the experience we had there was far beyond anything we would have expected. This is a modestly priced venue that serves fabulous food. There are different ethnic and American options so everyone was happy. I chose an Indian dish and I'm very picky about authenticity. The chicken tika masala was beyond wonderful. Perfectly seasoned, it was a large enough portion that I took home the next night's dinner. The desserts were also amazing. I lived in NYC for several years and made it my business to sample the best restaurants. There's something to be said for the elaborate décor and presentation in some of these restaurants. But I wouldn't trade that for the way I felt at Tambor. Our group included two children and a toddler and upon arrival we were greeted by the friendliest staff. Options for the toddler seat were immediately offered and the children were acknowledged nicely. The gentleman serving us (I believe his name was Harry) went out of his way to make a cocktail that they weren't familiar with and did an outstanding job of it. The woman who was also serving (kicking myself for not remembering her name) was very friendly and endlessly patient with the children. We stayed much longer than would be expected and felt overwhelmingly welcome the entire time. I cannot wait to get back to this place! read more

Just reviewing the food quality... 5. I love Ethiopian and have been to some great ones in NYC, ATL, DC and even Iceland. This ranks among the best. Although the decor is not particularly special and I am not a fan of televisions on while I eat- the food is fantastic. Fresh, flavorful and distinctive. Often I find the flavors in a platter tend to blend together... but not here. I may not know the name of each item I was eating, but each was unique and yummy. The walk to Tabor can be a little more sketchy as you get farther away from Charles St. Tabor is across from Potung's Chinese grocery store that I like to frequent. It has a nice restaurant front with a sleek black exterior. It's the nicer of the Ethiopian restaurants in the area. The inside has a tea house feel. There's a bunch of people hanging out at the bar sipping on tea/chai and talking story, another big group lounging on the couch in front of the big TV in the corner. I wouldn't be surprised if they sang karaoke there? I sat next to the window with a view of it all. Don't let the plastic red table coverings take away from the delicious meal. Now go wash your hands before you eat :-) I've had Ethiopian several times and the vegetarian platter was just wonderful. It comes with a huge airy thin pancake on the plate called injera. Then they place many little piles of food on it. Rip a piece of injera and grab some of the greens, cabbage/potatoes, lentils, beets, etc. No utensils and you don't even need a plate. Ethiopian food really needs to be eaten with people you are close to or enjoy sharing your food with. It's an intimate meal and fun. It's also inexpensive and you get a lot more full than you could imagine. read more

Quick overview of Ethiopian: Its a hybrid between comfort food (collard greens, stews, ground beef) and Indian food (chickpeas, lentils) and some Mediterranean thrown in (tomato salad). Traditionally, the food is scooped onto a crepe like pancake called Injera (made from a Ethiopian grain called Teff). Its served in the center of the table for the party to tear off peaces of Injera and scoop up bits of the food. You're eating with your hands, and sharing food - so go with people you feel really comfortable with. Some Ethiopian food can be really spicy - but I didn't find that hear - instead it was pleasantly spiced with the accent more on flavor. I met my brother in law and his brother here while they were in town for business. The appeal was the short walk for them from the convention center area, and plenty of on street parking for me (this was on a Thursday). I arrived a bit early, and the staff apologized that they only had a two person table available by the window, but they had a table near the back - and didn't get why this was an issue. As I sat down and ordered a beer, the reason became apparent. Right now, they are having a bit of a fly problem, but it seems to be only by the back table, and not from the kitchen. I wouldn't write them off for this, as otherwise, it seemed like a really sanitary place... but I also would be a bit selective of who I brought here in case this isn't resolved soon (I also may not go back if that's the case) My brother in law, having actually had ethiopian food in ethiopia on a few occasions, just wrote it off as feeling more authentic. We got the Tabor Special - which was a very filling (a bit much almost) for three hungry guys. You choose a bunch of the items, and it comes out on Injera. The meats, in particular, were great - and this from someone who usually digs into the veggies at these places. I was also surprised to find an Ethiopian beer I really enjoyed - it was the dark one (those beers tend to be really light so it was a nice surprise). For authentic Ethiopian, in a very neighborhood feeling atmosphere, I would certainly go back with some open minded friends. Expect relatively friendly staff, a little bit of effort to get the staff's attention, but lots of inexpensive wonderful comfort food. read more

I'm not sure what it's supposed to taste like but I imagined it being more spiced and aromatic. It was okay. I felt like I was just eating a bunch of different things. First time eating Ethiopian food! This place looks like a hole in the wall on the outside (as most Downtown Baltimore places do) but it's really nice on the inside. The place serves what I feel like is authentic Ethiopian food because I wasn't even offered a fork, lol. I thought that was a good thing because if you're really trying to experience a culture then you should fully submerse yourself in that culture. Our waitress and bartender was attentive even when the place was getting busy. The food is definitely reasonably priced. I had the pick 5 vegetarian option and still had enough food to take home. I remember the cabbage, chickpea and spicy lentils. The flavor of the food is great and I had enough to take home for later. Regardless - food was not prepared close to on time despite giving them an ample amount of time. The meat was really dry, overcooked, and surprisingly flavorless. And the veg side I got was so mediocre I regretted ordering it and felt like I should have stuck to the default salad. I've had Ethiopian from a hot bar in dc that is better than this and this is sadly cooked to order. While deciding what to eat, my dining companion suggested Ethiopian. I grimaced a little bc I had a horrendous experience eating Ethiopian many many years ago. It had to do with a raw meat dish that I thought was actually raspberries and... well, u can imagine the rest. LOL). Needless to say, I was a bit gun shy. I decided to see what Yelp had to say. Tabor had 5 stars (mind BLOWN!!), so naturally, this was my choice. Upon entering, the place was very inviting and clean. People were very friendly and welcomed us as if we were family. Upon reviewing the menu, we opted for: 1) 'Honey wine' - I've had amazing honey wine that tasted like honeysuckles. This wine was a little too sweet for my taste but served its purpose (I had quite the buzz afterwards). We also had 2) 'Beers. Very standard tasting. Nothing to write home about. Now on to the meal. We agreed with 3) 'Veggie sambusa' - deep fried pastry shell filled its lentils, green chili and special herbs. This is basically what I would liken to a samosa (in Indian cuisines). It was flavorful and a very nice start to our meal. They also came with a very spicy aioli sauce for dipping. Great start! For our meals to share, we got 4) 'Doro Wat' - a spicy chicken stew consisting of a tender chicken leg slow cooked in a spicy BBQ sauce that includes chopped onions, garlic & ginger along with Ethiopian butter. Served with a boiled egg and ayib. This was very flavorful but not very filling. It was more like an app than a meal (serving wise). We also got the 5) '50/50' - Served atop a round of ajira, we enjoyed collard greens, spicy split red lentils, cabbage w/ carrots and yellow split peas and 'Special Tibs' - tender chunks of lamb seasoned w/ soy sauce and rosemary. Cooked w/ caramelized onions, garlic, diced tomatoes and jalapeño pepper. This dish was OUT OF THIS WORLD GOOD!!!! We both thoroughly enjoyed this journey or flavors, all blending seamlessly with one another. The veggies were grilled perfectly. The lentils, cabbage and collard greens were perfectly cooked/flavored. The lamb of the 'Special Tibs' was seasoned & cooked well. There was a nice char to the meat exterior while keeping the meat itself incredibly moist and flavorful. This was an absolute hit! To add to this marvelous journey a live band set up and gave us some infringe music to enjoy our meal. Really really a nice time. I will be back! read more

I came here on a work trip and my colleague found this place. It was about a 17 min walk but it's well worth it. The food is authentic and can take a bit of time to come out. To be fair the restaurant was close to full when we arrived and by the time we were eating there were no empty seats. The service was great and the staff were polite. The ambiance was what you'd expect from a popular restaurant, but not too noisy, even though there were no available seats. I highly recommend eating here. read more

Best Ethiopian food I ever had but watch out for their hidden prices. We asked for plain water and they charged us for two bottles of water instead of bringing tap water. We decided to let that go. However. I asked if they served tea and they chose to not mention that plain tea was free, saying they only had two kinds of special teas - another charge added to the bill. I asked for a bit of milk with my tea and they charged me an additional two dollars. All in all the bill was $8 higher than it should have been. I discussed this with the server and she apologized, refunding just $2. We'll go back because the food was amaaaazing, but will take a much closer look at the charges and ask more questions before accepting anything. read more

Every once in a while, I get a craving for Ethiopian, so I thought it was lucky that this place is a quick jaunt from our apartment and that they didn't require reservations. What was not so lucky was almost walking into a would-have-been brawl betwixt the local indigent. Luckily, we just had to wait a bit before heading in safely, but just a word of caution that the area around Tabor isn't exactly squeaky clean. The restaurant itself is fine, but after we ordered our food, a very colorful character -- part of the aforementioned almost-fracas -- came in (to be fair, the waitress seemed to know what she was doing and how to handle him) and I didn't feel 100% safe until he left. That being said, while the service was as everyone has mentioned INCREDIBLY SLOW (I'm starting to think this is a hallmark of Ethiopian cuisine because many of the places I've been to showcase this slothful, almost lackadaisical sort of service), the food was tasty. We ordered the platter that was big enough for 2-3 (7 veggie + 3 meats), but we had no problems eating it by ourselves... and though I don't usually love lamb, this place cooked it perfectly. I loved the spices and all the flavors. Their injera wasn't as thin as I like, but it still served its purpose. (Note that the food is also served on a giant injera so if you "run out" of the rolled up portions, you can always use the centerpiece to scoop more up... though they're quite generous with what they give you, so I'm not sure you'd need to!) In sum, this was a nice meal (though not the best Ethiopian I've had... that's gotta go to Ensarro in Oakland, CA -- hands down, no question), there were a few, mmm, unappetizing factors that made this experience likely an only-once kinda outing. My daughters and I were craving Ethiopian food and settled in this place near Hopkins, based on yelp reviews and the fact that it was open on Sunday evening. We loved the food (4*), but I the atmosphere brought it down a star for me-- for others it might be completely unacceptable (like my hubs...good thing he wasn't with us). We ordered the Tabor combination of stewed meats, curries and vegetables beautifully served on a platter lined with injeera -- said it served 3-4 for $37.99, which came with a plate of rolled injeera (6 rolls). We wound up asking for more bread and there was no extra charge. And we devoured it all. But the atmosphere that brings it down? First was the smoky/ incense smell that seemed in place with the bar. Second was the cat - yes cat- roaming the restaurant. If it was an outdoor restaurant maybe, but I don't think I'll be back. read more

Service: We had a very pushy waiter who closed our menu before we even got a chance to look through and said he would order for us Ethiopian wine/beer, sambusas, and the pictured platter without explaining how much it would cost or taking into consideration that we told him we have had Ethiopian food before. He seemed pretty disappointed that we wanted to look over the menu ourselves before ordering and that we didn't want any drinks. After ordering, we asked for some water and he came back with bottled water that he began opening. When we asked instead for tap water, he again seemed disappointed. Once we ordered, a different waitress took over our table and the service was fine. All in all, the food was good and the restaurant unpretentious. However, our initial interaction with our waiter was very off putting. It made us feel like we were at a car dealership (a quick and dirty calculation suggests that the meal our waiter was pushing on us initially would have come out to ~$50 vs. our final meal which came out to be ~$25). read more

Well a coworker had mentioned he had been to Tabor on a previous trip, and I was like sure let's try it! Needless to say I have been missing out my whole life. I went with the Veggie Combo #2 with lamb. From what I remember it had Green lentils, Potatoes, beets, collard greens, and spicy lentils. The flavors were exceptional. First time trying Ethiopian food, and it was as amazing as I had heard it would be!! I love spice, and Tabor definitely brought a flavor that I was really excited about. My friend and I got one of the platters, which was meant for 2-3 people, and it was really fun to be able to share a huge plate and eat together!! The bread underneath the dishes was amazing, but I'll definitely say that my favorite thing we ordered was the Lamb tibs!! Still dreaming about those. The only downside to my visit was that the service was a little slow; it took about 20-25 min to get our check after we asked for it. But to be fair, I don't think there were many servers working at the time so they were really busy. Will definitely return! read more

Had the whole Ethiopian experience when I came here with my husband for dinner one night before a concert we were seeing. The server, a lovely gentleman who was very enthusiastic, helped us by choosing a great spread for the dinner platter, and paired it extremely well with a gorgeous wine for me and a beer for the husband. The food was well cooked, well seasoned, and absolutely delicious. I'd been here on one occasion prior and loved it, so I was delighted to return. I've already recommended this establishment to several friends and acquaintances who haven't had Ethiopian food before and I will continue to suggest it to others and patronize it myself. read more
