While I was in Lakeside, I popped into a 7-Eleven and couldn't help but notice a little taco shop next door called Taco Azul. From the outside, it looks pretty unassuming, but step inside and it's a whole different story--a small, spotless spot with a surprisingly expansive menu. They're famous for their signature blue tacos, made with vibrant purple-blue corn tortillas (they even have a cool photo and explanation on the wall showing how they're crafted). I didn't dive into those this time, though. I went with a classic street taco, a fish taco, and a chicken taco--and wow, they were fantastic. The fish taco hit that perfect balance: crispy on the outside, juicy and tender inside, leaving me immediately wanting another. The chicken was solid too. Even the lime slices on the side were plump, juicy, and full of bright flavor that paired beautifully with the fresh fish. For just $1.50 each, the quality was outstanding. I wasn't even hungry when I walked in--I just stopped by on a whim--but I'm definitely heading back soon to try more from the menu (especially those blue corn beauties). Highly recommend this hidden gem! You can't go wrong.

Great spot especially for the price. The carnitas was perfect - slightly crispy but still juicy and tender. You can tell the tortillas are fresh. I really liked the orange salsa, a little spicy but not overpowering. Great spot to come after a hike. A bit of a hole in the wall feel - certainly not fancy but those are always the best mexican spots. Staff were friendly and very helpful.

let me just tell you by walking into this place, It smells absolutely amazing. I had the California burrito it was so delicious. I think I found my new favorite place to get a burrito before heading back to Arizona. The service is absolutely amazing as well. If you're in the area, give tacos azul a try

    $1.99 Fish Taco

The hostess was very patient and accommodating. The fish tacos are only 1.99 with no catch! They are so amazing! Great flavor and great size! The crema was delicious and the salsa was spicy but not too spicy!

The best Mexican burritos and tacos I have ever had. I've lived in Mexico and the Sonoran Border, but never had a taco or burrito like these. The hard taco shells are made fresh and the burrito wraps are made soft and fluffy. The ingredients are fresh and delicious. I recommend this place as the best tacos and burritos in San Diego. A must visit!

Their cabeza meat is one of the best ones I've had in SD. Their fish tacos are really good & not soggy like other places. Their salsas could be better but also could be a lot worse. Great spot

    Shrimp and Fish Taco

We got (3) chicken, (2) octopus, shrimp, fish, and carne asada tacos (don't have pics of all). Tacos were yummy. The rice was delicious, nice flavor. I didn't care too much for any of the salsas. Definitely will be back!

I've been wanting to visit this Taco Shop in East County for some time now. They offer a great breakfast special in the morning. A $5 breakfast burrito which comes with you protein of choice, eggs, cheese, and fries. I was told potatoes initially, but not fries. I would have axed the fries if I had known that. I prefer regular potatoes, not French fries, in my burritos. I removed the most I could. At any rate, the burrito was of good size and tasty. It came with a very good amount of eggs and chopped ham. Both were very tasty. They used a good quality flour tortilla and offered good hot sauces too. It was quite filling. I do which however, that they would use real chopped potatoes in their burritos instead of French fries, but that just me. The service was very nice. The young lady at the counter was very nice and informative. The place offers a few tables on the inside. No outside seating.

Hard pass I definitely think the quality of the food at Taco Azul is way better. Every single thing on the menu I've tried is a chefs kiss and don't get me started on their surprisingly affordable specials can't beat that breakfast burrito for $5 or…

Hands down the best tacos I have had in San Diego. I was actually blown away by this place. I have…read moredriven past it countless times and was always intrigued by the cute mascot and the outside decorations, but I was also confused why there was almost never anyone inside eating or grabbing food. The parking lot looked exactly how it always does. Barely any cars and no one inside when we arrived. There is plenty of seating though with booths inside and some outdoor seating as well. The menu is posted above the register and has a ton of options that all sounded really good. They also have bottled aguas frescas like horchata and jamaica. Another reviewer mentioned they are house made. They also offer canned sodas, bottled drinks, and juices. I ordered three tacos: the New York steak taco (their version of carne asada), a cabeza taco, and a carnitas taco. My husband ordered the flour quesadilla with asada and two al pastor tacos. There is a salsa bar with hot sauce, red salsa, limes, radishes, grilled onions, and grilled peppers. My favorite thing there was the grilled onions. They were a little cold so I'm assuming they had been sitting there for a while, but they were still so good. Our food was brought out to our table. Service was pretty neutral. Nothing amazing but everything was smooth. I asked for no salsa on my tacos because the employee mentioned the same salsas were already at the salsa bar so I could add what I wanted myself. When the tacos came out they looked incredible and smelled even better. The New York steak taco was a thin slice of steak laid on the tortilla topped with guacamole, onions, cilantro, and beans. My husband got the quesadilla version of this and it was honestly amazing. The cheese was that perfect melty quesadilla cheese. I have never had beans on an asada taco before but it added such a nice touch of flavor and saltiness. The steak itself was sliced thin enough where every bite was tender and full of that rich beefy flavor. The al pastor taco really stood out too. Unlike a lot of places that use ground pork with seasoning, this tasted like real al pastor. The pork was juicy in the middle with a crisp exterior that made every bite really satisfying. The cabeza taco is what really sold me though. It was incredibly tender and packed with flavor. You can tell it was cooked slowly. The carnitas taco was different from what I'm used to but in the best way. Instead of shredded pork it was large chunks of carnitas. It was juicy, flavorful, and made me rethink how carnitas tacos should be done. Every bite kept confirming the same thought in my head that this might be the best taco spot I've tried in San Diego. I still have a lot more places to explore around the city but this place definitely set the bar really high.
