Decent little Mexican place in the Allison Hill section of Harrisburg. It is located on Derry…read moreStreet in a blue & red building with two satellite dishes (see exterior photo). The restaurant itself had a few tables, a frozen ice cream box, video chance games, a huge rack of phone cards and several pictures decorating the walls. Most of the pictures depicted scenes from mexico, such as poncho villa, zapata, rural life, cows, etc... one of the walls was covered in mirrors and had a sombrero hanging on it. They have standard tacos at 2.50 apiece, chicken, beef or pork. We tried several of them. There was also a Torta for 8.50 that was pretty decent. There was some type of hot sauce (Valentina brand) here that that we put on it made it significantly better. The helado de fresa or strawberry ice cream ($1.50) balanced it out. We also had the Bistek Ranchero: it came with 6 yellow corn tortillas, onions, cilantro, beans, rice & lots of beef, mixed with red pepper. That cost 14.00 pretty decent if you ask me. What makes this place stand out in my opinion is the " tostada ceviche de camaron " or lime marinaded seafood salad on a deep fried corn tortilla. This item is occasionally also available at competitors but not nearly as good. 5 Stars, incredible food!

That being said, I went today and got four tacos, two adobada and two carnitas, and when I tell you the tacos were delicious, that's no joke. My first visit to El Sol lined up with 3rd in the Burg, so I wisely made a reservation for 5:30…read more Turns out we arrived early and were seated immediately (maybe my "I'm starving" comment helped). Inside, the vibe is warm and festive: colorful artwork, low-top tables, a lively bar stocked with tequilas, and gorgeous Moravian star lights glowing overhead. The menu is extensive -- everything from tacos and burritos to rice bowls, full entrées, and massive multi-person feasts served in lava rock molcajetes. Most dishes land around $20, or you can snag tacos individually for $5.50. We started with the Mexican Seafood Dip and wow... game changer. Shrimp, bay scallops, crab, and mushrooms all swimming in a red tomatillo sauce, baked under a gooey blanket of cheese, and served with chips. Unlike so many "seafood" dips that are 90% cheese, El Sol delivers with generous amounts of actual seafood. It was piping hot, hearty, and plentiful -- enough that we happily took leftovers home. For mains, I went with a Birria Taco (plus a trusty Diet Coke). Juicy, cheesy, crispy perfection -- I could've polished off three more but restrained myself. Adventure Buddy chose Camarones A La Diabla -- jumbo Gulf shrimp and mushrooms in a three-chile sauce. Bright red, spicy but not overpowering, and loaded with shrimp that were actually jumbo. He was a happy camper. Our total came to $62 with tip, which felt fair for the quality and portions. Service was attentive and friendly, and the noise level low enough for both conversation and even a quick phone call. Parking is the usual downtown Harrisburg scene -- no on-site lot, but free street parking after 5 and garages nearby make it easy enough. Bottom line: great food, colorful atmosphere, and a menu that's begging us to come back. Next time, I'm eyeing one of those lava rock molcajetes.

Finally! Mexico Lindo! After hearing about this from fellow Yelper Steve M. I decided to venture…read moreout. The truck itself is located half-way on the curb, half-way in the street. Usually at the intersection of Market & 15th Streets in Harrisburg's Allison Hill section, next to O.D.'s place bar. It is worth noting that the truck may or may *not* be there, usually is there & open on weekends, but in the colder months you will not find it. Your best bet is to go on a saturday or sunday during lunchtime. We arrived 15 minutes before closing time. There was a lady who politely told us the choices. The only things they had left were the beef & pork tacos for 1.50 each. It was pretty tasty, the tortilla wraps were pretty large. They were filled to the brim with onions & cilantro. Sadly, we didnt get to try anything else today. Cash only, on street parking. Taco prices have held stead in the $2.00 range for the past few years.

FINALLY!! I had the chance to eat here. With the exception of the creepy guy sitting on the fence…read moreoutside of the truck (which apparently is affiliated with the building on the street) it was a great experience. I parked the car around the corner, carried the two year old, and ordered three carnitas tacos. In a matter of minutes (for the incredibly awesome price of about $4.25) they were handed to me in a plastic bag. They were perfectly cooked. The meat fell apart and had just the right amount of those succulent, chewy fatty pieces for which carnitas is famous. Each taco had two soft white corn tortillas which was good because the meat and toppings were so juicy a single layer taco would have fallen apart in mere minutes. Each taco had a nice amount of meat (not like the mere implication of meat you get at taco bell). The tacos were topped with a lovely pico de gallo which had a nice kick of cilantro and some zing from the onions. It was super, super fresh. It must have been made that day. I also ordered hot sauce on all of them. My two year old ate the hot sauce so you can rest assured that it isn't too spicy . . . but it did add a nice flavor. Yum-o to quote that Rachel lady. We will absolutely be back! I can't wait! My only complaint is that 15th street has one ways. Head up Market and you can't go wrong.

We stopped by Mid St8 Taco inside the West Shore Farmers Market on the Sunday morning before…read moreChristmas, and wow -- the market was PACKED. Despite the chaos, Mid St8 was cranking out tacos in a really timely and efficient way, which we appreciated right away. We were also super lucky to snag a table nearby, because Mid St8 only has a handful of seats, and they fill up fast. We ordered two breakfast tacos -- egg, potato, and chorizo -- for $11.66, and they were absolutely worth it. First pleasant surprise: real eggs (you can taste the difference). We wouldn't have minded a little more chorizo, but overall the balance still worked. We also loved the double tortilla, and these tacos were STUFFED -- no skimping here. There were lots of onions and lots of lime crema already on the tacos, which we greatly appreciated. The crema was a clutch move and kept the double-tortilla noms from getting too dry. Good call, Mid St8 Taco. Flavor-wise, they really delivered. Super tasty, filling, and exactly what we wanted on a busy, chilly December morning. One of our favorite parts of the experience was the self-service condiment bar. Instead of being put on the spot to choose toppings, you get to customize your tacos with crema, pico de gallo, fire-roasted jalapeños, pickled onions, limes, pickled jalapeños, salsa picosa, and salsa verde. It was great being able to sample a few without committing to a giant scoop of anything we might not love. (Spoiler alert: the lime crema and pickled onions were our winners.) These breakfast tacos really hit the spot, and despite the crowds, the experience was smooth and satisfying. We will happily be back for more.
