Back then, tacos were under fifty cents, so I went as often as I could afford. That taste stayed with me. Fast forward to a couple of years ago when I discovered A1A Burrito Works. I walked in, and to be honest, the decor didn't impress me. But I wasn't there for ambiance. I ordered two tacos to go and headed back to my car. That's where everything changed. I tried to eat while driving. That was a mistake. These tacos were massive, packed with meat, lettuce, and everything that comes with "The Works." I had to pull over just to properly enjoy them. And then it hit me. One bite took me straight back to 1971. After decades of eating tacos all over the place, these were the first ones that brought that feeling back. The same bold flavor. The same satisfaction. The same experience I never forgot. Since then, I don't go anywhere else for tacos. If you care about flashy interiors, this might not be your place. I got the steak torta and it had refried beans , mayo , tomato and lettuce. According to the menu refried beans is not on the torta, just your choice of protein. I do not like refried beans, I feel like that's just a way to be skimpy with the meat! And their was barely any steak. The salsa for the tortas tasted store bought. Chicago Mexican places salsa is always charred tomatoes, garlic and onions and it makes a big difference. Also the torta bread needs to be grilled so that your not getting a soggy torta.
