The President of my company I was working at 2010 took a couple of us to Taco Casa saying how great they are. He may have been a little bias as he was a proud University of Alabama alumni. Roll Tide! I read he started by Alabama alumni, who was a football player there in 1967 disappointed there were no Mexican restaurants in Tuscaloosa. Ultimately, he opened the one near the university in 1974. College students love tacos & cheap food in general. It was so popular he recognized expansion to another college town, Auburn. Although the enemy rival, he saw opportunity as college students anywhere like tacos & cheap food. Then, they expanded to Birmingham area & elsewhere in AL. They were served fresh and piping hot--not spicy hot, but freshly cooked and wonderfully warm. Everything good seemed to be inside those burritos! Taco Casa's burritos are also very convenient for taking home. They are wrapped securely and do not drip through the bag onto your clothes or car seat, as food from many fast-food restaurants sometimes does. The service is amazingly fast. Even when the line stretches around the building, the wait is never very long. I do not know how they make the food so fast while still keeping it fresh and delicious, but they do! They are experts at serving excellent food at reasonable prices without making customers wait a long time. Stopped by for a quick lunch, having seen this spot and wanted to try it. Jack was at the register when I came in. He was pleasant and helped me decide what to get as I had not tried anything and asked for suggestions. I decided on a small nacho and two hard shell tacos. I ordered a half and half tea to go along with my meal. Cost for the whole meal was 11.13 I didn't hear my number being called and Trevon so was kind to bring my food to my table. While sitting at the table in the corner, I could smell cigarette smoke and not sure where it's coming from. Perhaps from the wall needing some work. The food was mediocre at best. Taco Casa has multiple locations throughout central Alabama. I have to say that I was surprised that I have never been to here before or any of their locations. I'm a huge fan of Mexican food. Now please don't misunderstand, this is not really an authentic Mexican place. It is more a local version of Taco Bell. It is definitely fast food, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. I think that Taco Casa also is so beloved here in Alabama is that it is a "home team" and I am guessing that many people still come here because they have been coming here since childhood and it holds some incredible memories. The tacos are definitely more American than Mexican, but again, this is not a bad thing. The taco burger is also an Americanized item, but I can guarantee that many a person enjoyed this very unauthentic Mexican meal. For those of who grew up in Tuscaloosa this Birmingham location is a piece of home. If you went to UA it's also a nostalgic environment. With that said it does the trick but the ones in Tuscaloosa are more packed and friendly. The tacos here are a little skimpy, not sure if they're trying to save ingredients. I'm not sure why we have never been here before. We saw a video on Facebook describing Alabama's best fast food. We immediately thought let's check it out! It's so affordable. We got two combos and a taco burger for about $20. It's a step above Taco Bell but not quite the same quality you'd get at a sit down place, more so the quality of a Moe's or Chipotle. The Taco Burger hits. It's a great drunk food type category. I ordered mine sober and it was still a great option. It is like if the McChicken had taco toppings. I like that eAch item can be ordered by hotness. We ordered everything hot but could have had it much hotter. I loved that you could tell the vegetables used, like the tomatoes atop the rice and beans. The enchilada was so good and we used the cheese sauce to dip chips in afterward. Highly recommend a combo with an enchilada. We felt like we had so much food. This is the best fast food Mexican hands down!! I wish there were more locations in the Birmingham area. I lived in Tuscaloosa for about 10 years and thet have multiple locations there. I LOOOOVE Taco Casa. And, I miss it dearly. It's a shame they're only in Alabama; although, I do think there's one in South Carolina, but it doesn't seem to have the same menu. Anywho...I was in town for a quick visit and had to meet my sorority sister's there for a late lunch. I had my usual...beefy nachos and 2 mild beef burritos. The burritos are smaller than a normal burrito, so the two is necessary. And, of course, a large sweet tea. I smashed!! And they have the good crushed ice too. When we first arrived, there were two couples dining in. The tables were social distanced length apart. Staff had on masks and gloves and sanitized everything down after each customer use. I have been several times and ordered a variety of menu items between my family. Our favorite is the Taco Pizza. So crispy and they don't short you on meat topping. The burritos are also yummy. The flour tortillas on the burrito seem different than others. They are very thin and soft. Each one comes air sealed in a wrapper before being wrapped in paper. They have two kinds of nachos. Nacho Cheese and Queso. The Queso is better than most Mexican restaurants. You can also add beef to either and that takes it to another level with chips that are always fresh. If your a local then you already know all this, but if not, then what are you waiting for? Go to Taco Casa! And take home a bag of burritos for later. (They freeze perfectly.) read more

Absolutely love Taco Casa, I always stop by on my way home from my appointments in Birmingham. I also always get the messe nacho bc it's my favorite. If you love nachos (any of them) I suggest to sub chili for actual beef or chicken. My fiancé made the mistake of ordering one time & got highly upset bc he thought meat automatically came on it instead of chili. This was by far the worst food I've ever had. I ordered a chicken burrito and it literally came in a plastic wrapping, probably because it was microwaved. I completely threw away $20 today when i could have gone to WalMart and bought a $2 microwaveable burrito and been 100% more satisfied. This place is my go-to for Mexican food. Why? Because it's what I grew up eating in Tuscaloosa. It may very well be a Tuscaloosa thing, but I love it here! At one point the quality wasn't as great as the ones in Tuscaloosa, but it has since improved and I can't even tell the difference. I'm obsessed. Many new folks don't get it, so perhaps it's an acquired taste. My husband wasn't too impressed the first time he ate there, but he's since converted. There's definitely a cult following for this place. When we lived in Tuscaloosa, we ate there at least twice a week.
