About as authentic Mexican food as you can get in indiana. I passed this little place for weeks this summer and finally decided it was time to stop. I was blown away. They have a great variety of tacos, and you can order them either American or Mexican, or do like i did and ask for both styles and pay a little extra. You'll be so glad you did. So worth it. I didn't have a chance to make it back before i had to leave after my 3 months on the Tippecanoe River. I wanted to try everything. Treat yourself, if your a fan of Mexican food! I have been to this location over the past three or four years a handful of times. Each time the milkshake is a five star! My food looked very fresh and appetizing. Upon tasting the tostada the ingredients were fresh, however, the chicken was not seasoned at all. Thankfully they included verde- free! This helped tremendously. I opted for the corn tortilla shell for the soft tacos. This is typically my choice for authentic tacos. Unfortunately, the shells were extremely dry and again the chicken was not seasoned. Every order includes a small bag of chips and salsa. I would like to say the salsa was tasty. It was not, it tasted like plain puréed tomatoes. I love fresh salsa with cilantro and chopped onions. This was not that. The freshness of the items was very pleasant to the eye. And, that peanut butter shake was very tasty to the pallet. I will definitely be back for the milkshake. read more

Really enjoyed our lunch at Taco Express. They did a great job of authentic tacos, with the gyro meat and cabeza being standouts. I've never had a tastier taco. The other highlight was the four hot sauces, which seemed to be home made. The hottest sounds come with a guarantee of no subsequent sinus problems (because your sinuses will flee in terror). The food is fantastic for fast food, but pay attention to pricing. This company tends to charge higher price when paying at drive thru. It seems to be the same young lady, who over charges, which I believe is the owners daughter. This place isn't much to look at, but Yelp reviewers were right, the food was good! Food came out quickly and was perfect temperature. My husband had the gyro tostadas and he said they were a unique (and delicious!) combination of Mexican and Greek. I had a veggie burrito that was really tasty and very filling. The kids loved being able to have ice cream after lunch. The only thing we felt was pretty meh was the extremely mild salsa that came with the chips. Meals came with a few bottles of hot sauce to choose from though so that helped make up for the salsa. While the interior of the restaurant is pretty basic, it was clean and just fine for sitting for a few minutes while demolishing our lunch. We will definitely be making this our go to spot when we are in town visiting Indiana beach. read more

Yes, yes, yes! Eat here. I can guarantee you won't be disappointed. The tacos and tostados are amazing! They use the good corn tortillas and give you lime with your tacos. This is the real deal and they have a drive through!!!!! This place is the best place I have eaten at since moving to Monticello. It's a nice blend of authentic Mexican food with American comfort food. The chips and salsa are great to munch on while waiting. I had the Nacho Burrito and it was smothered in Cheese. Very good. My wife had the two tacos special and thought they were fantastic. After leaving we decided to test out their '40 ice cream flavors' promise and got shakes. It was well worth the turn around. I'd eat here every day if I lived within 20 miles of this gem. It is the absolute best, most authentic tacos I've ever had. Very pescatarian-friendly, vegan-friendly, snd gluten free, too. I think our only friends in town are the people who work at the restaurants we frequent. These people would then be one of our BFFs. It's owned by the same people who own Esmeralda's on the other side of the bowling alley. We love the food at Esmeralda's so we love the food here too. It's exactly the same food, but in a fast food environment, and priced for less. It's also easier to get in and get out quickly or get take-out. The manager is very helpful, so when she's working the cash register, she'll figure out what options make your combo meal cheapest. The restaurant stays very clean, despite sometimes, being over crowded. There's not a lot of seating since it's almost all booths. Our usual order consist of hamburgers and french fries which are OK. It's a Mexican place so can't expect great hamburger. I order the tongue tacos Mexican style which are generous and taste as good as the ones I get down on Maxwell Street in Chicago. The horchata is also a favorite and so is the fried Mexican ice cream which comes in two versions - in a shell or encased in fried dough. Both are excellent. Taqueria in rural Indiana.... The folks working there were speaking Spanish, so I took that as a good sign. The burrito spanned the plate and was grilled. This was my first and last time at Taco Express. We placed our order at 8:35pm for 4 ice creams... It took 25 minutes for the first one to arrive, 30 minutes for the next, 35 minutes for the third, then 40 minutes to get the last one. People that arrived 10-15 minutes later than us got theirs during our order. The people that ordered behind us ended up asking for their money back after around 35 minutes. The staff also didn't seem to think anything was wrong with this. They never apologized for our ice cream taking forever or for us getting it at all different times.
