My brother recommended Taco Rico to us. It's so good! The burritos are huge!! The fajitas looked great and my street tacos were excellent! The guacamole is made fresh and some of the best I've had! They had a red and green sauce you could use to add to your food. I liked the salsa verde so well that I didn't even try the red one. This is a spot that locals enjoy. Taco Rico is LIFE. Some of the most authentic Mexican food I've ever had. Their burritos are my absolute favorite thing to get. They are REALLY BIG. Super filling. Definitely a two handed, open wide burrito. Their chimichangas are just as big. The red and green sauce is made in house. The red sauce is very spicy and flavorful. They bring them out when they bring your food. You can buy larger containers to bring home as well. It doesn't bother me any, but they only had a license to sell beer, but not liquor. I'm not sure if that has changed yet. Its not a large location, so it's easy to get good, fast service. I've never had bad food here, and everyone is always so nice. Highly recommend. read more

One of the better Taco spots in the city, ua three guys dropped in around 8:00 p.m. for a weekday dinner to find a friendly and accommodating staff, lovely atmosphere, and large menu with all the fantastic options however horchata was sadly missing. We got a smattering of dishes all different. My BBQ beef was quite nice, missing tangy flacpes American BBQ boasts but tender great along with the rice and guac. The others are well too tho two muttered about how dry some of their meat was and unedible the chips were. Maybe a better spot for a rual lunch and dinner times! This place has never let me down. A friend and I met here for lunch and she was surprised by the cute atmosphere. Saw several people having the shrimp cocktail, which looked delicious. Service is pretty standard here. They do sell bottled coke, which is always a treat. Only real bummer about this place is that you can't get a margarita! My friend had the chimichanga, which was enough for 3 people. She took most of it home. The guacamole here is out of this world! It tastes so fresh. Some of the best I have had. Worth it! Both the fajita taco salad and steak and shrimp fajitas were big portions with lots of flavor! I did take off one star, because the salad barely had any shrimp in it, and they were very small cut up pieces. The shrimp fajitas may be more worth the price than the salad. When you pay $60 dollars for two people, and you aren't at Red 7 you really need to ask questions. Come to find out one of those $$$$$ items is Guacamole, I could understand $5 but $9.99?? We've eaten here a few times and every time their chips have been nice and fresh and the salsa has a little spice to it. They have an extensive menu and everything I've had has been good. We had the Camarones ala diabla, the shrimp quesadillas, and the steak quesadillas (along with 3 soft drinks the bill was $27) and we all enjoyed our meals. The waitresses have always been friendly, but it is true that it isn't obvious that you seat yourself and pay at the register when you leave. This was our first visit since they reopened the dining room after the COVID-19 shutdown, and oh my goodness. (They're operating with 50% of their dining room roped off.) It's like they spent the entire shutdown improving the quality of their food. I had a cabeza taco, and it was exquisite. Tender, flavorful. Wow. And the (crispy... is there any other way?) tripitas taco was everything a tripitas should be. Texture, flavor and even quantity was perfect. My wife had a (less adventurous) taco al pastor, which was positively heaping with meaty goodness. Generous portions of meat, fresh, fresh, fresh. Even the tortilla chips and salsa were among the best I've had. We topped it off with a camarones a la diabla, which had the perfect amount of heat and flavor. I'm not sure why I haven't left a review for this place, since it's become my standard for tacos, tortas, and burritos. I never let my friends say they don't like Mexican food unless they've had Taco Rico. One of the saddest things about graduating and leaving West Lafayette is leaving behind this establishment. The staff here is always friendly and it has an authentic and welcoming vibe to it. The food is usually perfectly seasoned, and the chips and salsa are the real deal. It's all reasonably priced though I'm a little sad that taco prices have gone up. The only reason it's not a 5 is because a few of the dishes are alright. One of them being the enchiladas. Been here at least half a dozen times where food and service was GREAT! The last time I dined here, the heavy set waitress was serving me and she acted like she didn't want to be there, didn't ask for refills, didn't ask how I was doing, just came by to give me my food and then the bill. Had a great meal here over the weekend, ordered 2 asada tacos, rice, and a medium horchata all under $9. The tacos were some of the best I've had within the Purdue vicinity, and while I would have appreciated more toppings within the rice (like some sort of veggie), I'll take what I can get. Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon for an early dinner. It took 10 minutes for a server to visit our table. The restaurant floors and tables were very dirty. We ordered margaritas and were told they do not have margaritas. I have been told the food is really good but we did not stay. The reviews for this place could not be more true. Although its location is a bit off-putting (in a strip mall next to temp employment places), the food, atmosphere inside the restaurant, and service couldn't be better. My favorites are the chorizo tacos - delicious. You know it's authentic when they serve chorizo (among other things I won't mention to avoid scaring the not-so-adventurous). And apparently, they make a good non-alcoholic pina colada, but I'm not a coconut fan. The best part is the GREAT prices. You can get a 3 item combo (taco, gordita, sope, or tostada with rice and beans) for $6.99! They of course give you chips and salsa with lime to munch on before you get your meal as well. Being a Californian and living in New Hampshire, I am a bit starved for good, authentic Mexican food. Visiting Purdue, I spied this taco joint on Yelp and it didn't disappoint! We went basic tacos, no fuss, all flavor with stacked corn tortillas, meat, onions and cilantro. Salsas they bring are excellent and balanced with the plentiful lime wedges. I was pretty disappointed in our dinner here tonight. The service was good and we grabbed a table right away, but the food left much to be desired. The lime wedges, chips, and salsa come complimentary and those tasted fine. I enjoyed the taste of this so my hopes were up that this was going to be a good experience. Not to mention I hear constant praise about this place from co-workers, but we were mistaken. We ordered cheese dip for an appetizer and it came in a huge bowl. There was nothing special about this cheese dip and I would not order it again. My husband ordered the al pastor tacos (Mexican style) and he was extremely disappointed. They were beyond greasy and the flavor was SO bland. If you want some great Mexican style tacos in town you can get them at El Chicano or the Lkora food truck for a much better taste and experience. I ordered the shrimp enchiladas. They were stuffed with just shrimp--no veggies, cheese, or anything. They were covered in this green sauce that I did not enjoy at all. I'm not a huge sour cream lover, but I found myself dipping my bites into this just for some flavor--which is not a good sign. They do not have margaritas, daiquiris, or any other mixed drinks. Beer Only. The price was good ($24 total) but we will not be returning. Lafayette & West Lafayette offer so many different Mexican restaurants and this would probably be at the very bottom of my list. read more

Taco Rico is one of those family-owned establishments that are always consistent with their food preparation. I've been here multiple times in the past few months and food has always been delicious and freshly prepared. Chips and salsa are complimentary. Their sauces are spicy and flavorful! I ordered their Taco Bowl and the portion was large enough for two meals. Will definitely recommend this place to others! P.S - If anyone is fan, they also have serve really good Horchata. Cinco de mayo, the salsa is really good but the chips were not fresh. I had a chrizo taco that was FANTASTIC! But the service and my enchaladias were horrible, I didn't even want to eat my food because it was so bad. I'm not sure I would ever go back here this is not authentic mexican food maybe I just order the wrong thing on the wrong day. It's a small dinner and has a nice setting and other people really like so you might too, I've had way better mexican and I'm sure there has to be something around here that's better then this place like taco bell even though that place is gross I think I would have had a better experciance there. read more

In short, I don't get it. Taco Rico is cheap and casual. Those are its redeeming qualities. The food? Not good. Yes, it's real-deal-style Mexican food. But it's done poorly. As other reviewers have mentioned, there are a lot of Mexican people eating here. When dining at an ethnic restaurant it's true that it can be a very good sign when you see people of the restaurant's ethnicity eating there. BUT....millions of Americans eat at McDonald's, Denny's, Burger King & Taco Bell every year. That doesn't mean the food is good...it means it's good enough, it's cheap and it's convenient. Taco Rico is filled with families (most with very young children), and generally speaking, families are not looking for fine dining. They want cheap, casual and if the food tastes ok, all the better. I can only guess that the overwhelmingly positive reviews here are primarily coming from people who have only eaten at a few Mexican restaurants in town. They eat at a couple bad ones, then they eat here and, in comparison, the food is so much better they make statements like "Best Mexican food in Lafayette area!!!" and never eat at another Mexican place in town. How can you ever make a judgement like "Best Mexican" when you've eaten at maybe 4-5 of the ~20 *real* Mexican places? It's simple - you can't. I've eaten at *every* single Mexican place in Greater Lafayette except maybe two. (...soon) Taco Rico gets 3 stars for effort. Food is more like 2 stars. Most recently, we ate there on a Sunday night. The place was packed. Only one table left empty that could fit 2 adults, 3 children. So I guess we got lucky. Service was very good even with the full house. Our waiter was fully bilingual and was attentive. The chips were pretty good, but the salsa was not. It tasted like flavored, canned tomato sauce. Did not like the texture, flavor or spice level. We ordered a side of guacamole. Ahh guacamole...a simple Mexican treat of avocadoes, tomato, onion, salt, lime, jalapeno, cilantro and LETTUCE?!?!? What in the world? Trump gets elected and suddenly lettuce is in guacamole? I understand that avocado prices fluctuate and can be very high. So raise the price of the guacamole! Instead, they mixed in shredded lettuce. (At least I hope that's the explanation) The "guacamole" was about 40% lettuce. We couldn't even dip chips in it. It was a monstrosity that will haunt my culinary nightmares for years to come. And it was unsalted. For my meal I did the pick three dinner platter - taco (chicharrones), gordita (carnitas), sope (barbacoa?) with rice and beans. My wife had the ceviche tostada and a barbacoa taco. The chicharrones taco was the best item I had, but I did not love it. Was ok. The chicharrones tasted good, with a lot of heat. I just didn't care for the texture, so my not liking this item is entirely on me. I think they did a good job with this taco. The gordita meat was bland. Carnitas should have a lot more flavor than this. Sope was the same story. An exercise in blandness. The actual gordita shell and sope base were good. So this is fixable, but I think since they cater to families, they just serve bland food. I did not like my wife's ceviche tostada. The coldness of it was just weird. The kids liked the rice and beans and I agreed with them on those items. So on the whole I did not like any of the four things I ordered. Three were Taco Rico's fault. Can't even consider giving them better than 3 stars. This was my second trip to Taco Rico after a years-long hiatus. I wasn't impressed the first time, which is why I hadn't been back. Gave them a second chance and I can say I will not willingly go here again. Too many better places. read more
