Our experience this visit was not the same as it was a few years ago. It has been almost three years since our last visit. From what I remember about our last visit and this one, this was not up to the standard of last time. The tacos were on the small side and the meat was spare. The carnitas, which were tasty and crisp last time, were bland and not crisp. The Al Pastor was good as was the quesabirria. My husband and I dined in and he got two Al pastor tacos, torta birria with consume, I got a three steak taco dinner with rice and beans, we also got two bottled drinks, Coca Cola and Sangria, drinks taste better in a bottle. The food hit the spot it was delicious and well presented! I love the fact they had a good selection of sauces, 4 bottles to be exact! They also sell their salsas in jars. I just wish they had the old school agua fresca machines. They had horchata but I think it was bottled. The service was excellent and the ambiance was nice. I'm writing to you today as a really big fan of your place. I've been a loyal customer for years now seriously, years. Your food and service have always been top notch, truly five star in my book. I even recommend you to everyone I know, especially the parents from both my son's baseball teams since we're always in the area at practice.I actually feel a bit bad that it took a less than perfect visit for me to finally write a review, and this one's just three stars. I stopped by last Thursday, and I have to say, things felt quite different from what I've come to expect. I was a bit bummed about the aguas frescas. I really missed the old horchata and especially the delicious strawberry and horchata mix you used to have from the machines. They always tasted so fresh. The bottled ones just don't quite hit the same spot, and the flavor wasn't what I remembered. I grabbed what I think was a mango or pineapple agua, but it really wasn't good at all. I didn't say anything at the time, but it was noticeable. Then, there were a few things with the food. The nopal gordita I ordered was sliced completely in half, almost like two tortillas, which was odd because I always thought gorditas were supposed to be stuffed. The salsas also seemed to be missing that familiar kick they really needed some salt. And speaking of new changes, I was surprised to see that chips and salsa are now charged separately. That was a bit of a shock. My burrito de tripas and chicharrón mostly had chicharrón, with only about three tiny pieces of tripas, which was disappointing considering what I paid for it. The asada burrito was good overall, but the meat itself seemed to lack seasoning, which was unusual. Maybe it was just an off day for my taste buds. On the bright side, while the cashier didn't seem particularly cheerful that day, the lady who brought our food and drinks to the table was absolutely wonderful super friendly and had a fantastic attitude! She really made an effort. Even with this visit, I genuinely want to come back. I know how amazing your food usually is, and I don't want this one experience to overshadow all the great meals I've had over the years. Delicious, authentic Mexican food! I've ordered takeout from here and have also eaten in the restaurant. It has a nice atmosphere with cute Mexican decor. Service is always good and actually pretty fast! Their salsas and sauces are very tasty, and I particularly like their chicken and al pastor tacos. This place is a hidden gem! There are so many places you can get tacos but nothing like a smaller authentic Mexican restaurant that just gets all of the flavors, quality, and atmosphere just right! From the moment we walked in we were greeted with the amazing scents of the food cooking just a few feet away, and the traditional Mexican cantina music! So fun! As we walked to the cashier to order our food we had questions on the menu and she made recommendations based on our questions and by getting to know us a bit. It made us feel more comfortable knowing that what we were ordering was what we wanted. First time at Taco Jerez tonight, and wow... I ordered three pastor (marinated pork) tacos with cilantro and onions and, I gotta tell ya, I was stuffed! These tacos were LOADED with meat. I eaten at Taco Jerez since they opened. I've noticed since that the owner counts the chips you get in an order. They used to give you a cup of salsa, no more. Now you get a condiment bottle. For prices they charge for food and serving size they should give you a lot more. It's almost like paying for parking downtown Chicago except you don't get what you pay for. There are plenty of really good Mexican restaurants nearby. They're not the only game in town . I'm done with this place especially in this day and age. Soooo yummy, and everything was well priced. If you dine in, you get complementary chips and salsa which were very tasty. How it works is you order up at the front and then they give you a number. You can sit wherever you want and leave the number on your table - they'll come to you and drop off your food when it's ready. It's identical to how it works at Noodles and Company, and Panera. Stopped at Taco Jerez on a drive from Chicago to Minneapolis. What a great little spot. Super clean and bright inside, and the staff were really friendly. Classic traditional Mexican place. My son and I both ordered a three taco dinner that came with rice and beans. We got a side of guacamole as well, which came with chips. Service was fast and the food was delicious. Asada and pastor tacos were great, and the guac was nice and chunky. The best thing was they gave you 4 different kinds of salsa to try with your tacos. Second time here. I had the California burrito with steak and it was pretty tasty. My wife had the taco dinner...two steak and one chicken. She said the tacos were good but she likes shredded chicken not cubed. I enjoy cubed chicken instead of shredded. She did like the rice but wished the beans were better. We have driven past this place on multiple occasions and probably would not have thought to try it , if it was not for fellow yelpers. My husband had the carne asada and shrimp tacos and I had the taco salad. On a Friday evening, the small, but quaint restaurant was packed with only a few tables open for seating. The food was authentic and the quality and taste was on point. The cashier was very helpful and when I asked if they had any salad options, since I did not see any on the menu, she immediately gave me options. There were many nice touches, the decor, the wait service and the entire atmosphere. They provided chips with salsa and with our food a variety of three toppings. Brand new place that inhabits the space previously occupied by Gabutto Burger, so naturally we had to check it out. What a time to start a new business! Here's hoping they thrive. The interior still felt familiar, but Taco Jerez has already managed to give it their own personalized touch as well. The staff couldn't be friendlier, and they made sure we felt welcome and properly introduced to the new restaurant. The husband ordered 3 tacos: al pastor, carne asada, and chorizo. I ordered only two: carne asada and barbacoa. I thought the carne asada was quite good, with a pleasant grilled flavor. The barbacoa was not my fav - that one generally tends to be hit or miss for me at various taco places, and here it seemed kind of... gamey, maybe? Not bad, but again, not my favorite. My husband liked his carne asada as well, thought the al pastor was pretty good (but not the best in the area), and LOVED his chorizo. Containers of green and red salsa and a few small slices of lime were included in the bag. Neither salsa was very spicy, but the green one was definitely the spicier of the two. We also got a couple of drinks, namely the horchata and the cantaloupe agua fresca. We furthermore sampled the pineapple agua fresca. All of the drinks that we tried were good, so I don't think you can go wrong there. The only little problem was that we ordered chips and guacamole, but once we got home we realized we didn't get them. After doing some math, we figured we hadn't been charged for them, so I guess we'll just have to try them the next time. We noticed that Taco Jerez offers a pretty good Taco Tuesday deal that includes 3 tacos and a drink, so that is something to keep in mind!
