Having to eat gluten free totally sucks, luckily their are awesome places like Taco Libre. The entire menu, except for the torta, is gluten free. This includes the ENORMOUS Machete taco! All of their meats are made in house, and what can be cooked to order/fresh (not having to simmer for a spell) really is. The Carne Asada was devine, so tender, and the Pastor is on a verticle rotisserie ready to be sliced off and made to order as well. Fresh house made horchata, great salsa's. There are few things better than good Mexican food. The street tacos are to die for. I got the beef cheek. The creamy green salsa, looked avocado based was amazing. It was how ever misplaced in the "Mild" area of the salsa bar. It was very spicy. I tried three of the Tamales, the pineapple, pork in red sauce and the Veggie one. They tasted amazing. My only complaint is they seemed a bit dried out. Someone got the machete that was awesome too. We also got two bowls. For at 8.00 move over Chipotle, the bowls are coming for ya. My wife, and I acquired a taste for Mexican street food while living in Portland, OR. We had been searching St. Paul for a place that could compare, and we found the flavor we were looking for in Taco Libre. Taco Libre is not Minnesota flavorless Mexican food... this is the real deal. I love Taco Libre! Been there for lunch a number of times and I have never been disappointed. I really liked the Machete but it is an enormous fried shell that left my stomach wanting a bit less. The street corn was great and we shared the machete, yummy! On another visit we had the cubano, it is excellent. We also enjoyed the horchata beverage. I love this place, very authentic food! Great workers and servers! Great people that come through. For the price you pay for the food it comes in abundance. No alcohol is being served. It's a family restaurant, with kids. It's a crowded place, but the crowd goes fast. There is take out, but no delivery. Reservations are available, also when they take your order they give you the number so you can sit down. The place is so beautiful with ambience in the air and laughter. Great place to be! Had an order to go around 9;00PM when there were very few people in there and they were incredibly slow. I ordered the Machete with marinated chicken and I was not impressed, it was slightly beyond bland and into not good and very greasy. I ordered carnitas tacos and asked for no onions and no cilantro. The tacos came with both onions and cilantro. By the time I got them home (5 minutes) the taco shells were soaked through and could not even be picked up without disintegrating completely. I ordered a plate of nachos that the menu stated had "Oaxaca cheese". No cheese of any kind was on it. Basically, like every other restaurant these days I had to wait in line for overpriced food that doesn't come as ordered. So glad I left a tip for the counter jockey. read more

Total disappointment. Was so looking forward to trying this place. The carne asada bowl was completely flavorless, and truly was no better than something I would receive at Taco Bell. It LOOKED amazing when I opened it. It was beautiful; but it was completely bland. I have had tater-tot hotdish with more taste. I also ordered tamales....I opened the foil containing them and they were wrapped in half-melted plastic cling wrap. I pulled it off, thinking it was maybe because of the other hot food in the bag, and removed the husk. The center part of the tamale I tried was mushy, like it had been sitting in water; and the ends were so hard that they were not chewable, and I had to spit them out. The other person with me ordered chicken tacos, which were also beautiful, and they said although they weren't bad, the only real taste came from the salsa. The salsa verde was so-so - not bad, but not stellar; however almost every container in the salsa bar was empty, so I couldn't try anything else. The wait for our food was pretty lengthy even though it was pretty slow, which is completely understandable for freshly prepared food. They had me hold the big metal table top number holder for my food, even though I was getting takeout; which although silly was not a big deal. However, when I figured out it would be a while, I told the young woman at the counter that I needed to step next door for a moment to grab my husband's pick up order, and that I would be back in just two minutes. I was told to put my number on an empty table, and they will leave my food there instead. I was kinda shocked. I ended up calling the restaurant, only saying anything about the tamales; and I will say, that they were pleasant enough about it, and were happy to replace them for me next time I wanted to come in.
