This is a delightful stop any time, any day. The service is super fast and the place is always packed. Be prepared for a wait on tables due to popularity. We arrived for a late lunch on Sunday and the crowd was just beginning to thin out. I ordered the burrito bowl with chicken and my choice of toppings while my wife had the steak tacos. The food is amazingly fresh and was served before I could get our fountain drinks. Absolutely delicious and the only thing preventing a 5 star rating is my Texas experience with tacos. Note: this location is the most typically crowded and I have had trouble finding a table after placing my order on a couple of occasions. I do the build-your-own Chicken bowl, which you can choose from a long list of FREE additions. You are not charged extra for guac in your bowl, and even have the option to choose 'guac' and 'avocado' in the same bowl at no additional charge. If you love avocado like me this is a great perk. I always add a side of chips and dip into the bowl. The grilled onions are to die for and I recommend adding them to your bowl. The house-made chipotle ranch is so perfect, I always ask for it on the side and use as needed. The margaritas are really good and come in fun options. I recommend the Watermelon! read more

I love Taco Mama. Loved the food at both the Homewood and Downtown locations. Came here for lunch after some shopping yesterday and was disappointed here. I will say that the staff was super friendly and attentive getting my food out quickly and taking my plate when I was done. The food was the only disappointment. I got my usual burrito bowl but decided to branch out and get chicken instead of steak. I did not like the shredded chicken at all. It was dry and lacked seasoning. My burrito bowl seemed to be 70% lettuce. It felt like I was eating a salad. I had asked for queso but only found the tiniest 1/4 a tablespoon of it in my bowl. One of the reasons I love Taco Mama is that you can get avocados AND guacamole for FREE with in your bowl. The downtown location never fails to give me both, but this one at the Summit yesterday only gave me avocados, no guacamole. I also asked for corn, but didn't find any either. It's hard to know what all is in your bowl until you actually dig in whereas at Chipotle and Moe's you can watch every step. I've noticed a few times at their other location where they seem to forget to add on things you asked for so I don't know if this is on purpose or not. The only other thing I didn't like about my bowl was the grilled jalapeños, a little overpowering so make sure you have plenty of water. read more

Love the music selection here. Loved my margarita (I got the sangrita) because it's very strong and you get your money's worth for the alcohol in it and the flavor is really good. The margs don't taste like you're drinking straight tequila like I've had at other places. But...I got the fish tacos, grilled. And like another reviewer said, the food was very bland. Tasted like no salt or seasoning was involved in the taco or salsa. My chorizo re fried beans had absolutely NO Chorizo. Just tasted like bland, unsalted, re fried beans. And the fish was just gross to me. I picked it off and just ate the taco without it. For this place to be so bumping, the food sucks. You pay for the atmosphere. I could've went to one of the many food trucks here in bham and would have gotten something wayyyyy better. Or Taco Bell. That would have even been better. I'm always impressed with the food here but moreover I am always impressed with the friendly and amazing staff this location has. They have always been SO friendly and kind to me. I've visited this location many, many times (dining in and carrying out for lunch at my nearby work). They are always super efficient and timely and make sure to make everyone feel welcome. They also have some of the best salsa and queso of any Mexican resteraunt I have ever tried. Trust me when I say take a chance and try this place! It was packed so we ended up taking our order to go. I got two tacos-classic beef which was very flavorful, and the sizzler which had yummy and tender steak-like pieces. I opted for the soft corn tortillas which held up nicely. The tacos came with corn chips and salsa (I'm not a huge salsa person but this was very good, fresh, and not too hot) plus one side. I chose the queso as my side. Drrrrooooolllll. If you're doubting to get the queso as a side, or an accoutrement, just stop. Quit doubting. Just get it. The cheesy sauce is better than you can imagine. I dipped my corn chips in that queso and devoured every last bit. Seeing that I'm from out of town, I don't know the next time I'll be back at Taco Mama. However, I know I'd like to try the nachos (saw someone get those while waiting for my order) and one (or more) of their many margarita offerings. Taco Mama, thanks for a delicious meal! I absolutely love the atmosphere of this place. It is fun, laid back and has a great drinks menu. Upon entering, the line was long and the place seemed quite busy for a weekday. The line moved fast enough and I was able to grab a table, no trouble. I have been to another location and we cater from taco mama all the time. I ordered a Jalapeno Margarita and Shrimp Quesadilla. My friend got tacos. The tacos were so-so, just average. The Quesadilla was okay too, not as good as I expected as I have them all the time. The margarita was really good. It was good, but I have had better. I prefer the Edgewood location, which has better service and food. read more

Meh.....what can I say, just wasn't impressed. While my husband and I were out enjoying Easter Sunday and trying to find a restaurant open was a nightmare. After endless searching we found Taco Mama. I was actually pretty excited! I mean who doesn't like and indulge in tacos???? 1st impression was great! Garage doors opened to the patio with fresh air, really cool decor and happy reds! And my favorite was the bottle top high tables. Finally settled on the Mama Chorizo soft shell basket that included chips and salsa and a side. All baskets are $8-10 and included 2 tacos. For my side I chose the Mexican mac and cheese. Hubs ordered Classic Beef soft shell basket with a side of queso. Food came out within 5 mins of ordering even though they were kind of busy. Classic beef tacos were a slab of beef with lettuce, sour cream and shredded cheese. Mama Chorizo had pico de gallo and fresco cheese. 1st bite into mine and literally a 1.4 gallons of grease poured out. I could feel my arteries clogging up as I swallowed. It was almost unbearable, but I had to finish the taco to make sure. My entire platter was covered. Beef tacos were actually tasty but still missing flavor and a wow effect. Best part of the meal were the chips and salsa. Salsa was pretty amazing, fresh and just right amounts of seasoning. Chips were warm and crisp. Oh, and the Mexican cheese, went strait to the trash. Penne noodles with melted cheese. That's it! No flavor at all! Service was kind of sucky, I get it, it is a holiday and no one probably wanted to be there. I really feel like they have good food somewhere on the menu. Especially the bud your own taco or burrito menu. Here's what I loved... the relaxed dive bar atmosphere, the menu choices, easy counter ordering, price point for what you get, beer and marg offerings and the quick service What I didn't love... the chips, salsa, guac or the side of honey chipotle corn I tend to rate my taco joints on the chips and salsa and I did not care for either of these things here. I ordered the two taco basket (comes with chips/salsa and one side); I chose Justice is Served (with grilled shrimp), the Alabama Redneck (with pulled pork) and guac as my side. The tacos were both really good, flavorful and were packed full! The chips had an odd cardboard like taste to me, the salsa had zero taste and the guac also tasted artificial. A definite disappointment, although I guess it saved me from eating all the calories?! The tacos score moderately high though. Husband ordered a taco basket as well; Justice is Served (with grilled flounder), The Mayor (chicken) and honey chipotle corn as his side. I didn't try his tacos, but he enjoyed them and they looked full just like mine. His side of corn is another story... tasted like the corn you steam in a bag at home. Watery, no taste.. zero honey or chipotle flavor. I get these were just sides, but y'all know that the sides make the meal!!! Warning, it does have cilantro (I love it, but I know some think it's the devil's weed). There was plenty to choose from on the drink menu, but I just had a grapefruit jarritos. Very good. You can't go wrong with taco mama. This location is on par with the location in mountain brook and has a nice new polished look and feel which the summit brings. The food here is tasty and plentiful. My go to is the build your own nachos, I mix up the meat a bit and haven't had a bad one yet. I usually load everything on top and I mean everything and taco mama deliver in spades. My only wish is that their chips had a bar more back bone they tend to snap a bit to easily for my liking. My tip to anyone would be to try the cilantro lime vinaigrette it will set your tastebuds into overdrive . My fiancé has had the nachos and the tacos and enjoyed her meal both times. There are your typical selection of drinks which won't leave your disappointed. The place is generally clean and spacious with plenty of seating both in and outdoors. I was a bit turned off by the fact there were dead flies in the men's bathroom which looked like they had been there at least a day. Just clean them up next time. Till next time read more

Each time I place a to-go order here, they ALWAYS forget to give us at least one of the things we order. Last time, they forgot a full order of tacos and this time they forgot our chips and queso, yet still charge you for the ENTIRE amount. Furthermore, I ordered a shrimp burrito bowl and they literally threw rice & 5 pieces of shrimp on wax paper then in a box (picture attached). Friday, lunchtime, crowded but quick. I was worried I was going to be put off by the volume of the music, but it was no problem. It fit with the lively atmosphere. It seemed like even though the line extended out the door that orders were taken quickly, and there were plenty of seats for everyone. I ordered the Justice taco basket--two hard shell flounder tacos with ancho chile slaw, avocado, tomato, and roasted poblano tartar sauce. The fish was fresh as were all the ingredients. It could have used a bit more acid, but that's just my preference. Self serve beverages are common around here--no problem. A small selection of hot sauces graces each table. You're likely to find one you like. Since my favorite place closed last year, I am glad Taco Mama opened up to fill the void. I think this will be my go-to Mexican lunch place. read more

Decided to try for lunch on beautiful fall weekend. Been packed since opened - got there at 10:45 only 3 people in restaurant. We both ordered steak tacos (1 Hard - 1 Soft) with chips, salsa and guacamole. Salsa and Guacamole were both fresh and had a good flavor. Steak Tacos were good - came with large chunks of avocado and just right amount of tomatoes and cheese. Steak was surprisingly tender and flavorful. The corn chips fresh and crispy - not greasy. Weird tacos. I had the Alabama Redneck (pulled pork) and Justice is Served (grilled flounder). I guess they're consisted tacos because the ingredients were on a tortilla otherwise I felt like I was eating a pulled pork and fish sandwich. There was nothing "mexican" about the tacos. The side of corn I got was simply grilled corn. I was expecting cojita cheese and a little flavor. The chips were good. The salsa eh.
