Absolute Disaster. I am a local and have given Taco Mexicali two tries. The 1st time the experience was below average but managed to live with it. The 2nd time was terrible. My wife, I and 3 children came in for a Friday night meal. We were asked the normal questions "how many do you have?" and to be seated until a table came available. We were then asked 4 more times by different individuals "how many do you have?" Approximately 30 minutes later with no one else ever waiting in line, we were finally seated. Once seated we ordered our food and were just grateful to be ready to eat. As I look around the table I see several sour faces (which is typical with 3 kids). This time however was different. The taco beef so dry and tasteless, it was unbelievable. In closing, please tourist just spend the extra few dollars and go to Plaza Azteca (never fails). read more

If you've seen my other reviews on Mexican restaurants, I've had a hard time finding one that I like. Who would have thought I'd found one in Williamsburg, VA? Walking in, we thought the decor was a little "cheesy" but we were greeted warmly. The booths were a nice size and had lots of room. Our waiter was so nice and quick to notice if we needed anything. Other servers would come by and make sure we were enjoying our meal. We were given tortilla chips and salsa to start. The chips were definitely homemade and came out warm and crispy. I felt the salsa could have used a bit of a kick but it was still very good. The menu was extensive, which could be a bad sign in some restaurants but not in this case. I had the carnitas which were delicious. Most carnitas I've had were basically shredded pork but these were authentic. The meat crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. My hubby had the garlic shrimp and a our daughter had a chimachanga. They gave her the option of having it fried or on a soft flour tortilla. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals. There is a self-serve station for salsa, cilantro, pico de gallo, etc. I love cilantro and added it to my salsa and my meal. After a hike in Freedom Park, we stumbled upon Mexicali. what a great treat. It is tucked away in a strip mall, next to State Farm. it was lunch time and they were busy, always a good sign, right? It looked like local residents and workers that knew about this gem. Now we do too. At lunch, there is specials. The board in front also listed specials, like $.99 tacos. We just returned from Colorado and needed a good Mexican taste. Hubby had the steak quesadilla with guac salad. good portions and taste. I had the carnitas burrito with rice and beans. Awesome cheese sauce on the burrito. Red salsa and chips, with the white dip we've seen elsewhere were provided. Ice tea to drink. We will return for dinner to check out the drinks and tequila options. Over all it was above average food, that someone put some effort into creating. More than you typical Mex place. Love this Mexican restaurant. in Williamsburg! Happy hour specials run from 4 to 9 p.m. daily. Margaritas are only $2.50. The waitress recommended Parrillada. I was pleasantly pleased with her choice. The food was enough for two. It was complete with steak, chicken, shrimp, chorizo, salchica (Mexican sausage or hot dog) along with the sides of refried beans with cheese, lettuce, tomato, scallion, guacamole, rice and your choice of flour or corn tortilla. This was my first time going here. I am a local and had never been although anytime some one mentioned this place it always had good reviews. I was pleased. The atmosphere was so positive. Decorations were cheerful. Staff was so friendly. You could tell they enjoy there jobs. My boyfriend enjoyed his food too and the salsa bar. We will for sure go back! I had I think it was called a Texas Burrito it's the fajita mix but in a burrito with chicken, beef and shrimp. It was so good and covered in cheese sauce. read more

Excellent authentic Mexican food. Margaritas were tasty and had plenty of tequila. I had one large and had to shop at the local stores before I could drive back to the hotel. Manny was very attentive and made excellent recommendations. Liked the place so much went back the next day for more. I can highly recommend the Texas fajitas, Arroz com Pollo, and Chiro-pollo dishes. Warning, its location in a small strip mall was hard to find but locals recommended it to us. AMAZING! We came to Williamsburg for vacation and stopped at a go-cart place. Afterwards we decided we had Mexican food for lunch and this place was the BEST! I ordered take out from here. The staff was very helpful when I told them it was my first visit. I ordered the seafood nachos and my husband ordered a burrito. I requested no beans, but they put beans anyway. Other than that, the food was pretty good! I thought the salsa bar was lacking a bit but it was nice to have choices on salsa. It seemed very clean and you can even watch the food preparation which is always fun and interesting. Especially while you are waiting around for take out! Quick recap of our Sunday, late lunch: Waited an extended time to be seated and should have known service was going to be an issue...and it was. We both ordered salads (Fajita Taco and ground beef Taco Salad). While waiting we enjoyed the warm chips and pleasantly thick and tasty salsa. Our entrees arrived in good time. We found those salads to be fresh and tasty and the portion good for a lunch time salad, Unfortunately the arrival of the entree marked the last time we saw our waiter until we completed our meal...no check back on food, beverage, etc. but he did remove food/plates, etc. without asking and before we were done munching on the remaining chips/taco salad shell and salsa. By the way, the restaurant was only about 20% occupied. The restaurant was clean and the limited salsa bar was OK. This would possibly "4 Star" lunch but the poor service dragged it to a typical "3:" I'd advise passing on Taco Mexicali if the parking area indicates the place might be busy. In any case I'll keep my fingers crossed that your service is anything close to attentive. read more

We moved to Virginia from out west and were sure that we'd never find authentic Tex Mex again. I'm happy to say that we were wrong. All of the items on their menu are delicious and not too spicy for the more sensitive palates. For those of us who like things more picante, there is a good salsa bar and for a very small charge they will provide you with pico de gallo. We eat lunch there at least once a week. The flan is terrific - they make it there. The Fried Ice Cream is definitely something to share with a group. read more

Came for lunch on Columbus Day (a Monday) around 1:15pm. Maybe we missed the crowd. My friend ordered a vegetable quesadilla which wasn't that good. There wasn't any cheese as promised (i mean, doesn't "quesa" in quesadilla imply cheese?) and it was wet and drippy. Disappointing. I ordered a chicken burrito. The told me it would have mozzarella cheese but instead they brought it to me with this white viscous queso poured on top. Looked kinda gross. The chicken was cooked well. But the side of rice and refried beans was WAY TOO SMALL. As in children's portions. I asked the waiter and he said that was the proper amount for a lunch order. Both orders were too small and we had to order a third item. Our waiter changed to another guy. Who told us Fajita California is a $6 special on Mondays only, something the other waiter didn't tell us. That ended up filling us up properly. Overall don't go here and expect big portions for lunch. You will leave hungry. read more
