My boyfriend took me to Nom Nom for my birthday. Neither of us had ever been before, so we were intrigued. I LOVED the restaurant that occupied that space years ago, Adelino's, but it was a totally different type of cuisine, so I didn't go into it comparing the two. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance was great. I loved the way they'd revamped and utilized the space.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our server was attentive initially, but after we'd put in an order for an appetizer and told her we needed a minute to look things over, it took forever for her to come back to take our orders. We didn't see her much after that either. The food wasn't worth the price in my opinion. The queso dip was good, but I feel like you should get more than you do for $10. My boyfriend loved the cheesy birria tacos, but I was less happy with mine. The meat in my tacos was barely lukewarm when they got to the table, which was weird to me; even when I get shrimp tacos elsewhere (when the shrimp isn't fried), the shrimp is at least warm. The fish taco was better than the shrimp taco, but you can get far superior tacos for cheaper at other restaurants around town. We both ordered a Paloma and found them to be very tequila forward and not as effervescent as they should have been; we were expecting carbonation but couldn't taste any bubbles (and barely any grapefruit) at all. I enjoyed it more than he did though. Overall, we're pretty sure Nom Nom is a one and done for us, which is a shame, because we'd heard great things and went into it with high expectations. I don't usually leave one-star reviews, but my recent experiences with Nom Nom Tacos & Tequila have been disappointing enough that I feel it's necessary. Over several visits--both dining in and ordering takeout--I've noticed a steady decline in both service and food quality. Most recently, my order arrived over an hour and a half late. When it finally showed up, the food was completely cold. To make matters worse, I've been unable to get in touch with anyone to resolve the issue, which is especially frustrating as a repeat customer. On top of that, the pricing no longer feels justified given the overall experience. This used to be a place I enjoyed, but unfortunately, it has taken a noticeable turn for the worse. When my wife and I saw the menu and photos for Nom Nom, we knew it was a must try. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Nom Nom is downtown in a old building in what feels like a dive.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We started out with Mexican Street Corn which was covered with lime-flavored mayo with cotija cheese. The corn came out hot and fresh and I couldn't get enough of the citrus vinegar tanginess of the lime. We ordered 5 tacos: Carne asada, carnitas, braised pork (can't remember actual name), vegetarian, and poblano. I enjoyed the Carne asada the most as the steak was marinated and seasoned really well. The carnitas and braised pork would be my next choices. I was imagining the poblano taco to be like a stuffed poblano pepper and it was similar. I thought the vegetarian had good taste but not as stuffed as the other tacos. It's always a risk to get sweet tea in the Midwest for this Bama Boy and I would add Nom Nom on the "Do Not Get Sweet Tea" list. It was not fresh brewed and from a tap. I ordered a Horchata which was all right. It seemed like I have had creamier horchatas. No complimentary salsa and chips here (boo!) Overall, Nom Nom is a pretty good taco bar. We had an early Thursday dinner. We started with the Chips-N-Salsa, which you have to pay for. They were actually the star for me. The chips were served with three salsas, which were so good. We went with tacos, all of which were good. My fave was the Pulpos. My daughter liked the sauces which came with the Birras. I liked the size of everything. The tacos are smaller, but not tiny. Service was friendly and attentive. Good Recommendations. The space was great with a Day-of-the-Dead dark look (not macabre), as opposed to the more common bright Aztec-style colors. The food was wonderful. Service? Not so much. Our bartender made a face when my friend ordered a mocktail, which is an immediate red flag. Then he forgot to put in our chips and guacamole so we waited on food for a really long time. Meanwhile he was socializing and taking shots with other people sitting at the bar. Lately it feels like going here feels like social hour for the workers and they don't want to do their job. However Alex the bartender was awesome. He wasn't even our bartender and asked us if we were okay, got us a box for a food (while the other bartender was taking shots). I can't say enough about this place! We find it by searching as we did the tourist thing in town (hate chain restaurants!) The portions were giant for the appetizers so plan accordingly. The soft tacos were delicious and the margaritas (once you narrow down from the numerous choices) tasty. My friend had their mezcal version of an Old Fashioned, which surprised him cuz it looked exactly like a regular, but he said it was good. We brought our son and his roommates here for dinner on a Saturday night, not really knowing what it would be like. After entering the front door from the sidewalk, we then went to a door to the right as they are essentially a restaurant within a downtown building. There is a host stand when you enter with a adequate sized bar to the right as well as a decent sized main dining space. Our server, Aryssa, was new but she was attentive and very personable. Their entrees lean more toward the higher-priced side of $15-30 while individual tacos are $4-7. We ordered the chips and salsa trio ($8 - salsa verde, chipotle, & white habanero) and guacamole ($12 - avocado, onion, cilantro, lime, pomegranate seeds, radishes) for appetizers. The chips were good, the salsas were OK, and the guac was well mashed, but I didn't love the seeds and radishes. They do have a variety of non-meat options on their menu. My wife ordered the Vegetarian ($5) and Rajas Poblanas ($4) tacos, which she enjoyed. I chose the Chile Relleno ($21), which was not a typical cheesy dish but was filled with a sort of ratatouille that was OK but I wouldn't order it again necessarily. Mix and match tacos and fantastic looking tortas. Huge selection of tequilas and mezcals and some innovative looking cocktails. Some non-alcoholic adult beverage options (NA beer or "virgin" cocktails) would elevate the experience even more. The decor of the restaurant is very cool! There's something to see everywhere you look. The murals are beautiful and the bar is gorgeous. The service was a little slow the night I visited (Tuesday @ 6-ish) but the server was attentive when they had the time. It looked like there were only 2 servers working the main restaurant and every table was full. Highly recommend Nom Nom! (I don't like to do this but got to be honest) Wow. I expected a lot more (like anything). Let me try and give a bit of the benifit of the doubt. It was a Friday night. We decided to sit at the 360 bar (I know from experience these are tough bars to work). Perhaps if we waited or reserved a table we would have been treated differently. Or maybe just a light weekday lunch. The problem is, if you can afford 2 hostesses and $100--$300 showy bottles of tequila, you can afford to train or hire more staff (though I'll admit it looked crowded back there enough). We were greeted warmly and then flat out ignored by our bartender. No water even. Then after who knows how long the smaller woman took pitty on us and took our drink order. Which then also took who knows how long. In all honesty, it was a nice smokey Oaxaca Old Fashioned and a Paloma. It would have been nice to know that we weren't forgotten or that they were going to make them. When we got the food. Yeah. That was good too. It took maybe 15 extra minutes for my partner to get a fork...thank goodness water was in carafes. We never even had a chance to order another drink or dessert; not that we were in the mood to be there any longer. A shame. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place advertised well. It looks hip and trendy and yummy[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. The problem is, that doesn't really matter when ignored. A simple apology or acknowledgement could have gone a long way. When we brought this to his attention we then had to wait and watch while he didn't do anything about that but had time to chat up the hostesses and restack menus. Eventually we caught the manager who gave us a whole $5 bucks off for our displeasure. We got out of there as fast as we could. Which is good because we were able to walk to 648 and have delightful service at their bar where (even specilizing in bourbon they made my partner an amazing gin bee's knees). We eat here every time we visit La Fayette or on our way to Indianapolis. I am seriously considering driving here 90 min from Chicago to eat. Everything we tried has been amazing. The presentation rivals Michelin star restaurants and gourmet tacos are just $5. The best Mezcal abd Tequila menu I have ever seen, great cocktails. Chips and Salsa - Solid 9/10. Keep in mind that these are NOT free, and cost $6 which isn't much, but definitely adds to the bill. The salsa trio all tasted good, my favorite is the red salsa and I wasn't fan of the queso/ranch/sour cream concoction that they had. Birria Tacos - 10/10, they were SOO soo good. They are heavy, I will not lie, but they taste amazing. The meat in the tacos are amazing and you can tell that they've been marinating in that delicious consome for a while. A pretty good amount of food for the price as well. All in all, I would come back just for this. Empanadas Suizas - 8/10, Pretty good. They had nice toppings and the green salsa paired well with the chicken. My only complaint was that the chicken was a little dry but everything else was perfect! The presentation was also beautiful! Churros - 9.5/10 Also really good. They serve it with ice cream, strawberries and chocolate syrup. PERFECT combination to go along with the churros. The churros were stuffed with cream and had a really nice crunch to them. They were nice and sweet too. There are only two full churros but the presentation is also on point. The service was good. Nothing to complain about. The food came out TWO MINUTES after we had ordered it, actually insane. It was fresh food as well, so I wasn't complaining. All in all it was a great experience. The inside of the restaurant is a bit dim, but that seems to be that way in almost every restaurant I go to nowadays. I would definitely recommend going here!
