My buddy goes crazy for this place! I personally enjoy El Nopal more but can't fault the Mexican food game here. I noticed a huge menu on our late night dinner run. Friendly drive through that had my friend's phone in order ready, we paid and grabbed his massive burrito without issue. Upon inspection, typically underwhelming presentation of dull white brown colored stuffed tortilla, the southern cuisine rarely can make their stuff look appetizing especially take out, but they really do pack their wraps well. He chowed down raving for his taste buds nonstop. I could see myself trying more, sipping horchatta which is a must, enjoying this classic friendly remodelled bright dive, and great location Mexican option. read more

Let me start by saying that I was NOT happy with this place. The location is good but they've moved from Elmwood ave to Teal rd. They just flipped an old KFC it looks like. Remnants of the KFC can still be seen but I like what they've done with their booths. They've done a not so great job at keeping the place clean though. The service was horrible. It looked like they had enough staff on deck. Me and some other customers had to wait a little while to be seated. Some of them were even tired of waiting on their checks that they got up from their tables, while the servers were too busy talking to each other. There were messy booths (see pic) from the time I got there till I left which was at least 45 minutes. There were servers coming out with food, not knowing which table it was going to, and having customers direct them. It was such a shame to watch. My server even got my order wrong and it wasn't even that complicated. Did I mention horrible service? The food itself was not good. I had a couple of tacos and a tostada. The tacos tasted fine but the tostada was dripping badly the second after I took the picture. I saw a burrito going to one of the other customers and it looked massive. Should have tried that instead. Prices are comparable to other Mexican places I've been to in the area. Verdict: Spend your money at one of the other better Mexican restaurants in the area; maybe even right next door. read more

Found this spot while I was out treasure hunting in the area and decided to stop in for lunch. It is located in a former Kentucky Fried Chicken building that has been painted a fresh vibrant color. They have a wide variety of options (more than your standard Mexican restaurant) that salsa and chips were fresh mad tasty! And the guacamole was fresh and fabulous! I ordered a Sopa but made with chicken it also had beans, onions, cilantro, lettuce, sour cream, and cheese. It was great! Everything else I saw coming out looked fabulous! I love the ambiance of this restaurant along with the friendly staff. The food is always consistent and well seasoned. Chips came out warm and with a salsa that was not overpowering. The chimichanga especially had perfectly cooked Shrimp, Chicken and Steak. Although the plate delivered with very very runny cheese sauce the flavor was good. The beans were bland and again very liquified. The burrito my wife ordered was excellent in flavor and prepared well, again the plating was with a liquified sauce. Sweet Tea was a refreshing and redeeming beverage, as with most Latino beverages at times the drink can be overly sweet as goes with the cultural preference. This tea was just sweet enough yet ICE COLD. Good experience and I will return. Great people and a family owned atmosphere. read more

Heard of this restaurant and wanted to check it out. Ate here Monday, 06DEC2021, lunchtime with my sister. The interior and the staff are so warm and welcoming! The menu is very extensive...everything from chilaquiles to oysters on the half shell! It is a lot to sort through and we wanted to try one of everything! As it stands, we drank large micheladas (note, they are HUGE and delicious for $10.99 each), my sister ordered the "cocktail vuelve a la vida" (shrimp cocktail and shucked oysters) for $18.99. I finally landed on the "mojarra frita" (whole fried fish, $16.99). To make a concise review, we were BLOWN AWAY with our food! The oysters were large and creamy, so fresh and tasted just like the ocean. They needed NO sauce or condiments, not even a saltine cracker. I have no idea how these chefs prepare such oysters in a landlocked Midwest city?! The shrimp were mild and tender and the cocktail with avocado was tangy and sweet and so delicious. My sis could not finish this cocktail dish. It was a very generous portion! As for the fried fish....I FELT LIKE ROYALTY when this dish arrived!!! It was brown and crispy and laden with fresh fish flavor. Served with hand made corn tortillas, seasoned rice, lettuce, red onion, and the most important side, sliced oranges and limes for squeezing over the fish. I cannot begin to convey how delicious this dish was. (I ate half at the restaurant and took the other half home for left-over tostadas the next day!) My sister also took home cheese quesadillas, a ham torta (ham and cheese sandwich), and the restaurant specialty, the "house chimichanga" made with chicken, beef and shrimp! (It is a huge and impressive dish!) Those were also reportedly very good and a definite eat again per her family. I hate it let the cat out of the bag, but you MUST try this restaurant. The only reason I'm giving four stars is because I ordered a side of guacamole that was made up mostly onions, tomatoes, and cilantro. Highlight here is the wonderful homemade soft corn shells. They make for big abundant tacos. The al ambre tacos with bacon, peppers, and cheese are decedent and worth trying. The food is very delicious but I warned the waiter about my serious shellfish allergy. That any contact could create some breathing problems. She did not write it down or tell the chef about my concerns. I had gotten two delicious chicken tacos. But after a bit I began to feel my lips swell up. It might be stupid of me for going to place that sells shellfish but I've been to many others and I've been fine. The other maguey that closed down did an amazing job of never caused such an inconvenience for me. The food was much better and the drinks were too. Overall I would not recommend this location if you have any shellfish or other allergies with food being cooked there. This was our first time at the new location. It is larger and brighter than the old location, but has the same food. I had the chilaquiles (has their homemade corn tortillas), and received a very generous amount. The red sauce was very tasty. My son had the Burrito Maguey, and it was huge. It has a mix of steak, chorizo, and chicken, along with peppers, onions and lettuce. It's topped with queso and green sauce. Their chips and salsa are not the best. The chips would be better served warm, and we doctor up the salsa with hot sauce. The service was prompt, but we were dining early in the evening and the restaurant was not busy. We've had hit or miss service here in the past. As always, they do not bring you the bill, just head to the register to pay. read more

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! I'm beyond upset with my order. Drove ten minutes each way (not a big deal). Ordered 2 Texas chimichangas, one for me, and one for my wife. Got home, opened the boxes, and saw what appeared to be a child's version of a chimichanga. Was it good? Sure, but I now have to make something else to eat because this wasn't enough. Most of the burrito was tortilla. The meat inside was tasty, but there was more tortilla than actual meat. Paid $20 for both of these, and I will not go back. One burrito for $10 and it looks like it was off the kids menu? What a joke. I called to complain. No manager. No help. They don't care. They are happy to rip you off. The El Maguey on South St. (26) makes this same chimichanga, and it is waaaay bigger. Not only that, but it is generously filled with meat. Go there instead. This is probably the newest Mexican restaurant in the Lafayette area, and they definitely serve a more authentic fare. As a warning, the burritos are insanely large, and depending on what you order, they can be very spicy as well. On the menu, only chicken, steak, and shrimp are listed as the protein options for the burritos, but my boyfriend was able to order a chorizo burrito with no problem. I had the fajitas el maguey, and I'm pretty sure I could make 4 complete meals out of the dish. The portions are very generous and a fantastic value. The only reason why I refrained from giving them 4 stars was because the service is not very good. The waitresses are rather inattentive, and we had to go up to the register to ask for our waters to be refilled. That being said, you can totally bypass the bad service by ordering to go, which I highly recommend because the food is very tasty. read more

El Maguey has become my go-to Mexican restaurant. What really keeps me coming back is the delicious carnitas - tender and delicious. I prefer to get it in taco form. It's really the best I've had. I also like to get the lunch special #5 (available all day) which has two tacos and a "small" burrito. You can get tacos "mexican style" with onion, cilantro and a lime, or "supreme" with lettuce, tomato and sour cream. I prefer mexican style. The supreme is good too, but the generous amount of toppings can overwhelm the taste of the meat. I tend to get grilled chicken in my burritos, which are served with a mild verde sauce and queso. There are more than just tacos and burritos. they have a large menu with lots of good stuff. They also have horchata and flavored waters (like pineapple and mango) to drink. oh yeah - fresh chips! All good stuff. This place is definitely worth a try. read more

Hot, chaotic and just plain inhospitable It is 85 to 90 degrees inside, with no running AC. I checked the pinatas hanging from the ceiling and they were not moving. There were 4 children running around and screaming at the top of their lungs without any parents in view. I get that's not the restaurant's problem but the atmosphere was stressful. Someone took our margarita order. Five to seven minutes later, still no water or margaritas another woman came up to our table and said the original woman that took our drink order was not coming back and asked what we wanted. It's always nice when you've never heard of half of the things on the menu because you know you're getting to try something new. My partner and I love this restaurant! We have been going since they were located in Market Square. Their move across town made farther away, but it's worth the trip! We have always had great servers, and at this point our regular server recognizes us every time we come in! She always goes above and beyond to make sure we have a good dining experience. I normally go for a chicken quesadilla or chicken burrito. Their quesadillas are the best in town imo! I've also had their arroz con pollo, tacos (steak, chicken, pork, etc) and menudo. Authentic and affordable. Their guacamole mex is the best, because i prefer my guacamole to be chunky instead of blended. I could make an entire meal out of their chips, guac, and salsa. I order their pollo asado that comes with rice/beans and tortillas. The grilled chicken is covered in cheese, jalepeno pepper strips, and onions (I order mine without) and you can make it into a fajita if you wish. I don't need the tortillas to enjoy it though. My husand typically gets the camarones ala diabla or "devil shrimp" with rice/beans. As you can guess from the name, it is just grilled shrimp with a spicy sauce over the top and it is spicy. His eyes normally run while eating it! The restaurant is a dive, actually it's the old KFC building in Market Square, but the food is great. You can order ahead and use the drive thru if in a hurry as well. They also opened a second location on 26 near Sam's Club. Some of their English in limited, but we've never had issues ordering. Awesome tacos! The tortilla is what makes this taco go from good to great. The taco fillings are similar to other Mexican restaurant tacos, but their tortillas are so soft and delicious. We only had tacos while we were there so I cannot vouch for any other dishes. However, the next time I'm craving some delicious tacos, this is where I'm going. Highly recommend the asada taco. A friend and I were looking for somewhere new to try, and ended up at Taqueria El Maguey. I was kind of skeptical when I pulled up, because as another reviewer mentioned, it's in an old KFC building--and it's pretty obvious. It's very cramped inside, and because we went at noon, the place was really hectic. Servers were running everywhere and pretty much every table was filled. Once we sat down, we got chips and salsa right away. Someone brought our drinks quickly and took our order. The food came out really quickly. I ordered the taco special--two tacos, your choice of meat, with beans and rice for $5.59. Not bad! The food was a little bland but they have hot sauce on the table for you to spice it up. The tortillas were really good too. We ordered a small bowl of guacamole for $2.50, going with the chunky kind, and it was AMAZING. I have a new favorite guacamole. I couldn't even finish my lunch. The food was really good and really filling, and the service was great (though a little harried). I think next time I'll force myself to slow down on the chips and guacamole (ha, ha, ha) so I can finish my lunch... read more

I agree with the Tiffany P.'s review. My husband ordered a chicken burrito and it was as long as his forearm--no joke. He only ate half and I even had 5 or 6 bites. I had two tacos, one beef and one chicken. They were very good and very authentic. The fresh cilantro is great and I added authentic mexican cheese to mine. It was very good and I would think 2 or 3 tacos is enough for a meal with some chips and they were like $1.70 each (cheaper than some of the stuff at Taco Bell!). The service was strange--we too had to go see about getting drink refills. The boy who helps kept talking to us about "can you believe they won't even help me do this" or whatever--and the waitress was waiting on her boyfriend and sitting down to talk with him. I would totally go again though. Improve the service and it will be a 4 or 5 star place for authentic and inexpensive Mexican fare. read more

I hesitate to even give two stars, but it is edible so you get two. The food is bland and apparently the only redeeming quality is size. Yes, you get a lot of it, but this "food" is lacking any flavor or quality. Speaking of quality, when we left we got to see where some of the produce comes from and it was daunting to say the least. Picture one of those scary white vans without windows and full of old tires and dirty rags, then on top of that are boxes of onions and limes. Sure didn't look sanitary. Also, the place was filled with screaming children. Drawing on windows with greasy little hands, standing on chairs, yelling and really adding to the generally poor ambience of this establishment. The service was pretty miserable as well, they had to ask what we ordered more than once and seemed barely able to get basic service accomplished. But really, the food is just awful people. Nothing redeeming about it. You are better off just opening a can of refried beans and throwing some old cheese on top. I have had better food at Taco Rico, Mi Cabanita, Jarocho's, Don Pablos, and Taco Bell than what is offered here. We tried twice just hopong that we came on and off day, but nope, it is just awful. This is a horrible place to go!! We were trying to get take out and we called and called they would not answer their phone. We had no choice but to go and order it at the restaurant.... when we went through the drive thru nobody came to take our order! We waited and waited, and they just walked right past the drive thru window knowing we were there! We even honked our horn! We drive to the entrance because my husband was determined to get Mexican food and it was 10 minutes until they closed and they shut off the open sign! This was unreal!! Horrible customer service! Great authentic Mexican food with prompt courteous service. We were only one of 4 tables seated the night we went, and only one of 2 tables that didn't speak Spanish as our native tongue.......and it's the first "Mexican" restaurant that I've been to that served Mexicans or Mexican Americans!
