That occasion had been a few years ago and had involved an insanely strong margarita, an experience that I would not want to relive. However, my friend suggested grabbing dinner there recently, and since it was a nice evening and their outdoor dining was right on the main thoroughfare of Washington Street, I agreed to at least go to enjoy their excellent people watching. I certainly vowed to skip the cocktails, but was willing to give their food another chance. We started with crisp, lightly-salty tortilla chips and a rich, bold salsa. I then ordered Vegetable Fajitas, which included green and red bell peppers, zucchini, and onions. The peppers had been sliced so thin that they were barely noticeable and made hardly any flavor impact. The sizzling platter was also about 85% onions, of which I was not a fan, so I sent back most of them in the end. The whole thing was also rather greasy. The flour tortillas were delicious and not artificial tasting like most. The DIY platter was also served with a side plate of refreshing sour cream, well-seasoned guacamole, sliced jalapenos, and fresh pico de gallo. I wished the portions of these condiments were larger, though, and the guacamole, in particular. The staff was so friendly, allowing us to linger at the table after we paid and even refilling our water during that time. They all provided service with a smile, which also helped ease any frustration a diner might have about the fact that they apply an automatic tip of 20% to the check for any party size. While I still had a decent experience at East LA, it was much better than I had remembered, and I would be willing to return.

The outside has always made me walk past, but I finally decided to try it tonight as I've gotten sick of Chipotle. Plus it's always a good feeling to support our local businesses. While I wouldn't call this spot a "hidden gem" of Hoboken by any stretch, I did thoroughly enjoy my burrito. I got a regular grilled chicken burrito and everything that came with it. Upon my first bite it was apparent that the chicken was more like hibachi chicken than grilled chicken (not a complaint but not what was advertised). If you try it you'll know exactly what I mean. No complaints about anything else. They could have made more of an effort in evenly distributing the contents of the burrito but thats just me being picky. If it means anything to whoever may be reading this...the burrito felt like it weighed 5 pounds and I found myself eating the entire thing. So why 3/5 stars? This burrito cost me $16! While the ingredients were fresh and the portion was huge, it's hard to justify one burrito at almost 20 bucks. Complain about Chipotle's portions all u want, but my bowl there only costs me like $12. I'd definitely go back again at some point, but it just didn't taste good ENOUGH to justify the price tag.
