Baja Mexican Cuisine is a Mexican restaurant that has developed a disturbing pattern of unprofessional and unsafe behavior toward its customers -- especially people of color. My own experience: We sat at the bar and were told margaritas were $6 plus $1 for flavor. When the football game got too loud, we asked to move outside to the patio. Suddenly, the price doubled to $14 per margarita -- something no one disclosed when we moved. When we questioned the bill, the manager (a blonde woman) came outside, spoke less than 25 seconds, offered zero de-escalation or customer service, and instead immediately called 911. Imagine that -- calling the cops on paying customers over a $7 discrepancy. That is reckless, insulting, and flat-out dangerous in today's world. And it isn't just me. Multiple reviews on Google describe the same blonde manager being rude, dismissive, and hostile toward Black and Brown guests. Some were refused service, some were humiliated publicly, and in my case, she weaponized 911 without asking a single question or trying to resolve the matter. For a Mexican restaurant to repeatedly treat people of color this way is outrageous and unacceptable. I recorded the interaction, and it lasted no more than 25 seconds before she escalated to calling the police. My Reddit post about this has already been viewed over 51,000 times and shared nearly 100 times. I plan to continue posting this video and my experience across platforms to push for accountability. Look at the other reviews and decide for yourself Calling the police on customers over a simple billing question isn't just bad service -- it's dangerous. Hoboken has too many great restaurants to waste time or money at a place where management thinks this is acceptable.

I wish I didn't have to write this. This was always one of my favorite places we had the fish. I had the fish tacos and it was like five little pieces of snapper in the fish two tacos, some refried beans and rice. I don't wanna tell you the price,The salsa at the bar was way too spicy. I don't know. I don't think I'm ever gonna go back here. I must say the staff was helpful and pleasant. That's the only reason why I gave them any stars.

Delicious food, friendly service! Went here for a third date. We sat outside and it was nice atmosphere, but be warned of the bus coming every so often LOL. The chicken was moist and flavorful, rice was so tasty and perfectly salty, and the chips and guac didn't disappoint. Drinks were also great and had the right flavor to alcohol ratio. Will definitely be back to try a different cocktail and food item.

Visited on a Saturday night (after visiting pier 13 and not liking any of the options there). Restaurant was pretty empty and we were seated immediately. Nicely decorated both inside and out. Waiter was friendly and attentive. Shrimp burrito was good but I never had a burrito where my rice was on the side so that was a little off putting. Also had a mojito which was good!

Rice and black beans. Both good! Especially the beans.

I didn't have high expectations for salmon from a Mexican cuisine restaurant but woah! The salmon dinner was delicious!! It was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Flavor on point! Highly recommend. The grilled veggies had a nice char on them too! I don't eat peppers though. I ate the squash. It came with rice and black beans. The rice was good. Had some kind of flavor. I only had a bite. And the black beans were perfect. Delicious. I ate them all. I will definitely be reordering from here! Want to try their other foods and the salmon again. Highly recommend!!

I LOVE THIS PLACE I have come many times before and I have never brought someone that didn't like it. The staff is courteous and the food is delicious. Probably my favorite restaurant salsa and chips and they keep it coming. I really enjoyed my michelada and my friend enjoyed her jalapeño margarita and said it was nice and spicy. My go to order is the baja special for 2 and it's enough to feed 3 or 4 and includes grilled steak, chicken and shrimp, garlic shrimp and shrimp parm. It also comes with rice, beans, tortillas and guacamole. Everything is super fresh and soooo tasty. Definitely must try

    Jalapeno Poppers (6 per order)

Eehhhhhhh, if you're looking for the most average restaurant in Hoboken... you have found it. Not sure why the reviews were so stellar? It was giving white man cooking Mexican food. The service was also not great, took 15 mins to get water (both times we've been) Have to be honest, first time we came we sat for an hour without our order being taken so we wanted to give it another try and it did not impress or disappoint? (My roommate said 6.8/10 for reference) PS- skip on the jalapeño poppers... taste EXACTLY like the ones at Carls Jr (iykyk) Fun outdoor patio tho and good drinks!

Huge jalapeño on the spicy margarita!

I'm a huge fan of standard Tex-Mex fare - chips and salsa/guacamole, margaritas, and enchiladas, and Baja did not disappoint! We came with a group of five during prime time dinner rush on a Saturday night after making reservations a few days before. We had no issues making a reservation, so good start. I started off with a spicy margarita that came with a huge fresh jalapeño garnish. Despite having the jalapeño on it, the margarita itself was just the right amount of spicy; I've had ones that were almost unenjoyable to drink before, but this was just right. Our table split an order of fresh guacamole and of course, many baskets of crisp, fresh chips and salsa. Baja's salsa is smooth, reddish brown and not chunky - my preference. The guacamole was very fresh and delicious... and demolished within minutes! For an entree, I ordered the enchiladas a la parrilla but switched the enchilada sauce to verde sauce. The enchiladas themselves were a little dry because cheese was baked on top of them, but I added a bit of sour cream and leftover guacamole and they were tasty. Staff was fairly attentive and service was pretty quick given that it was a busy Saturday night. Overall, great experience and will definitely go out of my way to come back next time I'm in Hoboken and craving Mexican.

The food was sooo flavorful and good. Took a little bit to come out because of the holiday but it was worth it. Waiter was a sweetheart Dannilishush lol Ambiance and music is on point. Will be back again. Xoxox

I can't recommend Baja enough. The food was incredible and the drinks were top notch. We ordered the classic margarita and the spicy margarita with tajin on the rim. Both were made to perfection. The house was a good mix between tart and sweet, the spicy wasn't too spicy but had a nice kick. The mix they use for the tajin rim was wonderful as well, they added a little salt with it. For dinner we ordered the steak fajitas and the steak chimichanga asada. OMG. THE STEAK!!!! It was so tender and had so much flavor. I feel a lot of Mexican restaurants over cook their steak and don't care to season it well but this was PHENOMENAL. I really can't say enough about how good the food was. We will certainly be back!

We ordered: Borracho Tacos (fish) $22 Esquites Gratinee (corn) $10 Truffle Ribeye Burrito $27 Black Chili Crunch Guacamole $14 The borracho tacos aka fish tacos were very small and disappointing. They are very overpriced for what we received. One small piece of fish per little taco shell. Flavor was ok. Are they worth $22? Absolutely not. We will not be reordering these. The Esquites Gratinee corn side dish was bigger than the guacamole portion and flavorful per my boyfriend. I don't eat corn so I didn't have any. My boyfriend really liked it. Said it's unique and 10/10. He would get this again. The truffle ribeye burrito is delicious. Though I didn't get any truffle flavor? If it was there, it's minimal. I didn't taste it at all. The ribeye was cooked perfectly and it's a good portion of meat. Tender and flavorful. No chewiness. Sauce on top is amazing. Rice and beans cooked perfect. Would order this again. It's worth it. Even without truffle flavor. Great portion size too. The black chili crunch guacamole is the star of the show. While it's a small portion, it's very flavorful. Love the garlic. Love the crunch. Fresh avocados. This is worth it. We would definitely order it again. Highly recommend the guac. Small but mighty haha.

That occasion had been a few years ago and had involved an insanely strong margarita, an experience that I would not want to relive. However, my friend suggested grabbing dinner there recently, and since it was a nice evening and their outdoor dining was right on the main thoroughfare of Washington Street, I agreed to at least go to enjoy their excellent people watching. I certainly vowed to skip the cocktails, but was willing to give their food another chance. We started with crisp, lightly-salty tortilla chips and a rich, bold salsa. I then ordered Vegetable Fajitas, which included green and red bell peppers, zucchini, and onions. The peppers had been sliced so thin that they were barely noticeable and made hardly any flavor impact. The sizzling platter was also about 85% onions, of which I was not a fan, so I sent back most of them in the end. The whole thing was also rather greasy. The flour tortillas were delicious and not artificial tasting like most. The DIY platter was also served with a side plate of refreshing sour cream, well-seasoned guacamole, sliced jalapenos, and fresh pico de gallo. I wished the portions of these condiments were larger, though, and the guacamole, in particular. The staff was so friendly, allowing us to linger at the table after we paid and even refilling our water during that time. They all provided service with a smile, which also helped ease any frustration a diner might have about the fact that they apply an automatic tip of 20% to the check for any party size. While I still had a decent experience at East LA, it was much better than I had remembered, and I would be willing to return.

It's an also an opportunity to thank Tacoria for the "small" nachos, currently $10 and not small. When I discovered the JC branch circa 2020 Uber delivery, it was definitely one of the cheapest non-pizza options in coastal NJ. The golden avocado is perhaps the best of the main ingredients but multiple versions benefit from the escabeche peppers. A cashier immediately tried to stop her from going, even though we were clearly customers already waiting in line to order. What made the situation worse was what happened next. A manager identified as Justin and another cashier began arguing about the situation in front of customers. Instead of calmly explaining any policy, the discussion turned into an awkward back-and-forth between staff members while we stood there waiting. The entire interaction became uncomfortable and embarrassing, and it felt like we were being treated as if we had done something wrong simply for asking to use the restroom while waiting to order. If the restaurant has a policy that restrooms are only for paying customers, that's completely understandable. However, there was no visible sign anywhere explaining that policy. Situations like this should be handled professionally and respectfully, especially when customers are already in line to make a purchase. What could have been a simple moment of customer service instead turned into an unnecessarily uncomfortable experience. I hope management reviews how staff communicate policies with customers and considers posting clear signage about restroom access so situations like this can be avoided in the future.

The outside has always made me walk past, but I finally decided to try it tonight as I've gotten sick of Chipotle. Plus it's always a good feeling to support our local businesses. While I wouldn't call this spot a "hidden gem" of Hoboken by any stretch, I did thoroughly enjoy my burrito. I got a regular grilled chicken burrito and everything that came with it. Upon my first bite it was apparent that the chicken was more like hibachi chicken than grilled chicken (not a complaint but not what was advertised). If you try it you'll know exactly what I mean. No complaints about anything else. They could have made more of an effort in evenly distributing the contents of the burrito but thats just me being picky. If it means anything to whoever may be reading this...the burrito felt like it weighed 5 pounds and I found myself eating the entire thing. So why 3/5 stars? This burrito cost me $16! While the ingredients were fresh and the portion was huge, it's hard to justify one burrito at almost 20 bucks. Complain about Chipotle's portions all u want, but my bowl there only costs me like $12. I'd definitely go back again at some point, but it just didn't taste good ENOUGH to justify the price tag.
