The first time I tried Tacos 1986 was in LA, so when they came to New York I had to try them again. I ordered the asada tacos and they were super flavorful, especially with their red sauce it honestly made it taste even better and added the perfect kick. I also tried the mushroom mulita and that was surprisingly one of my favorites. So good, cheesy, and packed with flavor. Overall, the food is price-friendly, the quality is there, and it's definitely worth it. I'll for sure be coming back.

Saw the mixed reviews and decided to try this place anyway as it is right near my old apartment. I ended up loving it and honestly has probably become my favorite taco place nearby (without the line). It's pricey at ~$20 for a combo but the steak and pork was super flavorful.

This place was absolutely amazing. I stopped here because I was craving tacos and they are open late at night. They're located right at a corner so easy to spot. They have an a la carte style menu, and I only wanted a small bite, but the taco was so good, I went back to order another. I had the carne asada taco, and it was so flavorful! They have a couple of stool seats inside, perfect for a quick bite! The food comes within a few minutes. The team members were all kind, and asked if I liked my taco. I felt very welcomed.

This place opened up recently and the lines have been crazy. Thankfully, the line was minimal when I went to try but they have a good system down: they take your order and ask for your name/number. Once your order is ready, they send you a text. This definitely helps ensure it does not get packed considering the place is tiny. Love the location -- I ended up picking up the food and eating in the nearby park. The horchata was amazing, love that they come in bottles so it is super easy to shake. The tacos are very good, I tried the al pastor, chicken and steak. There is a mushroom option, as well, as a vegan option. The al pastor was very juicy, but would say the chicken was the best one for me. Definitely on the top 3 best taco spots in the city list!

Tacos 1986 is the new kid on the block. I went at 5pm on a Sunday and didn't have to wait that long (maybe 20 min total). There's a little window ledge for people to stand and eat (can fit about 5-6 people). The service was okay but their TV screens weren't working. I used their menu online but they didn't have the combo meal sets yet. You order and can wait outside for the order because it's small inside. They'll send you a text or scream your name to notify you. I tried 1 of each of their tacos (carne asada, chicken, Al pastor, and mushroom $5 each), chicken quesadilla, and their Jamaica (Hibiscus tea). The carne asada and chicken was juicy but was lacking some flavor/salt (salsas helped). The mushroom was a little burnt on my end. The best was Al pastor- not too salty. Love their salsa bar towards the back. You can def try many kinds of salsas and can help enhance the tacos. The chicken quesadilla was better than regular taco because the saltiness from the cheese made it better. Sadly, my Jamaica drink was bland and watered down. Also, when I went, they didn't have any cup covers, so be careful with your drink. Overall I think tacos 1986 is good. I'll come back in a few months to re-try.

The tacos are solid. Adobada was really good. Chicken fine (but they were huge chunks which you don't usually see). Perhaps this place was too overhyped so I was expecting out of this world. Just as good as tacos from a cart. Everyone working there was so nice. The food came out quickly. It's a tiny space with a small counter to stand at which fits about five. Loved that they had salsa bar. I prefer Paquito's in the East Village.

Lives up to the hype! I came on a Monday at 1:30 PM and the only people in front of me were just finishing ordering. I got the #1 Combo: 2 tacos, rice and beans, and a drink. After a short wait my order was ready and I parked at the counter to consume. Both tacos tasted phenomenal. The adobada, rich and spicy, paired nicely with both salsas I tried; the generous portion of guac on top was ideal for rounding out the flavor profile. The carne asada proved to be the rebellious bad boy of the duo, similarly sumptuous in conjunction with the various salsas. The fresh tortillas are worthy of praise and recognition, yielding tasty flavor, impressive texture, and surprising durability. This is peak culinary architecture. The rice and beans, while a little plain, turned this into a substantial (but not overwhelming) lunch. Washed down with cold cola from a glass bottle, a picture perfect dining experience. For me, this will be a go-to after screenings at IFC Center and a nice place to take visitors while strolling around the neighborhood. May the taco takeover of New York continue!

Tried the carne asada, al pastor, and chicken tacos. All of them are great and a good size. (A good 4-6 bites per taco) The set up is a bit crowded inside with only enough space for 5-6 people to eat at the counter. It's hard to get to the salsa station too. It'd be nice if they had some standing tables outside to eat your tacos.

I wasn't able to try the burrito or burrito bowl on the first day, but the taco and quesadillas really hit the spot. Everything is made fresh right in front of you, and it's actually pretty fun to watch them assemble your food! The meat was super tender and tasted absolutely amazing. I would definitely get the steak again! One thing to note: the place is pretty small. It was extremely crowded when I visited, so you might want to eat on a bench nearby or even take your food to Washington Square Park (about a 5-10 minute walk away), since it can get packed inside.

Ordered the carne asada quesadillas combo with beans/rice and drink. The rice was very dry with little to no seasoning or tomato/onion taste. The beans were fine but definitely needed some more seasoning, even if just more salt. The guacamole was excellent and tortillas were nicely crisped, but the asada was SO chewy. I felt like I ended up spitting out half of the meat because of gristle.

There's definitely a taco revolution happening in nyc now. 1986 is a pretty solid option if you're in the area, comparable to the OG los tacos no 1 chain. I had the pastor and carne asada today and enjoyed the former more. With so many other taco spots these days I'm not sure if this one stands out in any way but it seems like a pretty reliable option at $5/taco. Service was very quick around 1pm on a weekday - order was ready almost as soon as I paid.

I really would rate this place over a 4 more like 4.5. The food here is really good and authentic. I tried the spicy pork burrito and it was so epic well seasoned with great depth of flavor. Not too spicy at all I would recommend anybody to try it for the flavor. The secret is to add rice to tone down the spice and add more heft to the burrito. The tortilla has a great chew and is perfectly toasted to to compliment the flavor of the contents of the inside. I tried the carne asada as well was perfectly cooked juicy not too chewy well seasoned my actual favorite. These tacos are GOOD with everything on them. Al pastor and chicken were both delicious & it's definitely one of the better taco spots I've had so far in New York. I also got a vamprio, which is two fried tortillas so the toppings are sandwiched in between them, but I think I like the soft tortilla a lot more for flavor and textural balance. Salsas in the small seating area with a few tables in the back. The dark red salsa is smoky & the brighter red thick salsa was my favorite out of all of them for some medium spice and flavor. Light red salsa has a sweet tomato flavor that I would drink up. read more

Wanted to try this out - as there was some hype about it. I normally go to Los Tacos No 1 for lunch. I ordered two mulitas - one chicken and one pork. The chicken was a bit bland. The pork was better. Neither was nearly as good as Los Tacos No. 1. However, the service is much faster - as there was no line. Probably will stick to Los Tacos read more

Not fancy but that's not the point. This is the best Al pastor in Manhattan! I realize that's a low bar, but NYC needed this so badly. The salsa tastes good, the pork is juicy, the service is fast! This is what you want when you're drunk, it's honestly like we broke the curse of Mexican food in NYC! read more

Went to Tacos 1986 in the West Village for a quick dinner after a workout class on a weekday evening with a friend. It's a new spot, so there was a bit of a line, but it moved quickly. The location is on a corner with no seating, just space standing at the counter for eating. I ordered the bowl, which comes with rice, beans, salsa, and guacamole, and I chose pork al pastor as my protein. The meat was flavorful, but the beans were bland. Thankfully, there's a selection of salsas on the side, and adding a few made a noticeable difference. The portion was generous for about $15. My friend got tacos with rice and beans on the side and had the same feedback about the beans lacking flavor. Overall, it was an okay meal, but there are definitely better spots for quick tacos in NYC. read more

Okay so I'm very partial to Los Tacos No. 1, this is up there with it. The flavor palette was very similar, I would say the carne was not as good but still great. The better part was it's very homey and small in here makes it a much more quick grab and go not too intimate. We were in and out within minutes. The service was great we got what we wanted and peaced out. I'd certainly return as I frequent the west village often, I'd like to try it again and order some more things. Overall great place, great food! read more

The taco scene in NYC has been exploding this year, but I think Tacos 1986 is probably one of my favorite new ones. I love the tacos, and the vampiros are like super taco sandwiches. The sides and drinks are great as well. read more

Closer to 3.5 imo Great to have in the neighborhood, and I want the to be good, but still doesn't scratch my itch for the Mexican food I grew up with. Meats leave more than a little to be desired. Where's lo tatemado? I see the grill but don't taste it. Idk, flavor missing. I think with all the hype I was expecting something leagues above the other similar places in the WV but didn't find that. The tortillitas are good. The place is cute and staff are nice. It's early, so I'm hoping they keep getting even better, I want them to succeed and will keep trying and update my review. I'll still go here in a pinch, but when I can I'll probably still walk my way down Bleecker to what I think is the best taqueria in the city. read more

The meat in the tacos was very fresh and tender (unlike most other taco places around). I ordered both chicken and steak, and they were both delicious. They have a bunch of 'meal deals' but all of them include rice and beans (which I can't really have), so no deal for me. It would be great if they could set up a taco deal with just 3 bundled tacos and a drink. I also ordered guacamole and chips. The guacamole was basically just avocado (and tasted kind of like Wholly Guacamole, not fresh) without any crunch or vegetables. Also, the "chips" were just flat unsalted tortillas, so not quite worth the purchase. But, now I know and I'll go back for some good tacos when I'm having a craving. read more

Update: I went back and tried again making note to cook the tortilla- the burrito was a lot better! I also got no cheese. First experience was 2 star, this one was 4- so now it's a 3-star rating. I'm glad they let me try again to have a better experience- customer service was good. -----I wanted to like this but the tortilla of my burrito was raw and uncooked - I took it home and tried to salvage it with a pan but the tortilla should have been put on a griddle on both sides for it to be cooked and I didn't feel like taking everything out of the gummy mess. I'd be open to trying it again if the tortilla is cooked properly. Cheese tasted weird - I'm used to mission style burritos in SF- meat was fine. read more

NYC's taco game is finally stepping up. I had the abodaba quesadilla tacos and they were AMAZING. The pork was perfectly seasoned and juicy and the homemade corn tortilla was thin and soft. Nothing much to write home about. It was an okay meal with okay flavors, doesn't pack the seasoned punch that I usually expect out of tacos, rice, and beans. It's also pretty expensive for a combo meal that just includes 2 tacos to begin with. Try somewhere else for your late night eats if you like a little more flavor. read more

Tacos 1986 is Cornelia Streets newest restaurant and a welcome addition to the block. I had the Pollo Asado and the Adobada taco, both were very good. Really disappointed - Ordered chicken taco and pork taco. I asked for lettuce, no lettuce, tomato? no tomato, sour cream? no sour cream. I saw where this was going so I finally said ok - let me get them plain and I will prepare them at home. I really was ok with that since I had everything and was taking it home to eat anyway. All the toppings they had was guacamole, salsa, onions and a few sauces. Well I got home and they were both loaded with guacamole, raw onions and cilantro. Neither plain as I ordered. I can't stand guacamole and raw onions so I took every piece of meat and literally papertoweled them clean. It was a disgusting way to eat dinner. The corn taco shells (I got soft shells) were super fresh and the woman was rolling them out and grilling them right in front of us. They tacos are very very small - less than 4". The chicken was tasty but there was not much on it - maybe eight 1/4" little chunks. The pork was incredibly dry. It was flavorful but it was like shredded jerky. Maybe thats why they insisted on putting guacamole on it even though I ordered plain? An effort to mask the dryness or maybe to hide how little meat on the chicken. They have a big staff - 8 or 9 people behind a small storefront and I was the only customer. Taco places are opening up left and right in the village lately - I can think of at least 8 in a 3 block radius so these guys are really going to have to step it up if they want to compete. Unfortunately, next time I crave tacos I will try one of the others. read more

Unreal tacos and amazing staff!!! Have had many tacos here in NYC and these are at the top. Great portions and super tender meat. Tacos came out very quickly and it's right next to the West 4th station, making it a convenient option. A must try if you haven't yet. The staff members were all so friendly and made everyone feel welcomed. read more

This location is convenient to Grand Central, Bryant Park, & Times Square. I was excited to find them after a getting off the Metro North. Unfortunately, the two times that I've eaten there hasn't been great, compared to their other locations in NoHo & Union Square. I'm not sure if the more touristy ambiance & customers makes a difference. First visit got the Pork Adobada Taco ($5-ish). It's similar to Al Pastor (even served with a few pieces of pineapple) but spicy. It's pork marinated in an adobo sauce made from dried red chiles (like guajillo or ancho), vinegar, garlic, and spices. The corn tortilla was very fresh & good but the pork was SO spicy. Some kind of chili oil was drizzled on, in, within, at the bottom. It comes with a sort of green crema. I barely finished - thought it was a joke or something. The second visit I got the Adobada (requested Zero spice) & a Chicken taco. The pork meat was delicious & reminded me of the first time I had Los Tacos No. 1. The chicken seemed like dark meat & was either over-marinated, slightly undercooked, or on its way out? resulting in weird mushy, slightly liver-like consistency. I even picked through the pieces to check for pinkness...the meat was just dark with little flavor. It came with a dollop of guacamole that didn't have much flavor. The corn tortillas also seemed slightly mealy/mushy & underdone. They weren't airy & slightly puffed as usual. I'll probably go back because their location and cost is convenient. But have to make sure the pork has No Spice & not sure how to ask for "done" tortillas. There's always a line at Los Tacos but it moves fast. The condiments & radishes, limes are always fresh. The staff is always pleasant & work quickly customizing your taco, wiping down the All White! hightops & refilling napkins. Don't think there's a restroom FYI.

The service was great; they drew the cutest card when they found out it was my brother's birthday and let us bring a cake. And they also offered hair ties to the people with long hair. You order through an iPad which has a beautiful menu.
