Wrapping a hot dog in bacon is one of man's greatest creations. I've had them before but never as fresh and as tasty than at the party I attended Sunday night at the Silent Movie theater in Los Angeles. "Happy Heart" whose website is tacosandhotdogs.com provided fresh tacos (either chicken or beef), fresh pupusas, and of course bacon wrapped hot dogs with grilled onions to what was a heavily catered event. Considering they were competing with the infamous "In n' Out" truck; their delicious and fresh food proved to be the favorite of the party. I am not happy about writing this review as I have used their catering services twice and have had good experiences both times. The problem is, it is extremely hard to get through to Oscar, the owner. Last year it took several calls and emails for me to finally get a response and this time he just will not get back to me at all. The first year I used him everything was great and guests loved the food. The next year, customer service went down but the food was still great. This year, nothing. My cousins and I were so excited that we found these caterers, for our moms party. We knew about taco trucks but one that had nachos , hot dogs and pupusas?! After reading reviews on here, we decided we had to book them. We requested carne asada tacos and pupusas. The pupusas were going to be revueltas ( meat beans cheese ) and queso con loroco ( cheese with vegetable?) it's also my moms favorite kind of pupusa. They day of , they showed up late and had people waiting for a while. The pupusas were definitely not good. My mom was disappointed that the queso con loroco ,didn't have any loroco in them. I also heard many complaints from the guests saying the pupusas were not cooked well. My mom made sure to tell one of them and after telling them some were still raw. The pupusas were also supposed to come with curtido and salsa. The curtido was bland and clearly not Salvadorian curtido. Typically to make curtido you cook the vegetables in vinegar and add salt and spices. This one tasted like steamed vegetables, no flavor whats so ever. I personally didn't taste the carne asada tacos, but I am glad I didn't. My husband and other guests did and they said the tacos were pretty greasy. Okay Oscar I hope you don't hate me for this because I didn't give you a 5 stars like everyone else here but I am an honest reviewer and I do hope you improve on your services of course. First, thank you for being an honest guy. And it is a two person job and you did superb on your part trying to handle all the cooking. I really would have loved to try your carne asada cause I love carne asada on my tacos haa haa. Since it was suppose to be 3 kind of meats and only chicken was served. I knew I should have ordered a double dose of the bacon wrapped hot dogs cause I know my guests. Never underestimated them. I give you kudos for your drink. I did hope that everything showed all at once. Cause I could have ordered 10 gallon of that drink so delish and my guests could have drank that from beginning to end. My hubby was really really bummed he didn't get to try the bacon wrapped hot dogs. I feel that at the end Oscar was scared of me when ever I would come near him ... I don't bite Oscar. You did a good job for whatever you can do at that situation when things go wrong. But I think a little more organization as a team with your dad would have been better coordinated. And it isn't a bad idea to scout out the location too before the actual event for any catering jobs and to even have a meeting with your clients face to face before hand. From the very beginning Oscar was great to work with, his customer service was unbelievable, if he'd miss my call, immediately Would he be calling back or reply to my emails with in seconds. Oscar quite possibly makes the best chicken nachos I've ever had. He runs a really simple operation that is great for parties. I've seen him at 3 underground venues now and he has never failed to bring it. I would definitely recommend him for a party, be it a club or your backyard. I'm lagging a bit with writing this review, but time got away from me. I produced a short film with my partner Mike in the spring and hired Oscar to cater for us. When we realized that we didn't get our head count right for the second day of filming, Oscar really hustled to help us out and made sure to have enough food - even though his normal supplier was already closed On first day of our shoot, he realized that cooking the rice for lunch was too noisy (we didn't have to say anything, he just stopped) and so he made different sides to account for this AND to make sure our hungry crew was fend on time. So instead we got some pretty amazing nachos. We underestimated the heat and how thirsty everyone would be, so we ran out of water quick. Oscar volunteered to run out and get more water (totally free of charge) - even though we agreed that we would provide our own water when we discussed details. He made sure to check in periodically to make sure that everything was OK. He even slipped me some food early because he wanted to make sure I got fed. I ended up giving it to a couple of the actors who needed some sustenance before their scene, because I felt bad eating before the crew (and let's be honest, a producer walking around with a delicious smelling taco while her crew is hot, sweaty and working hard... not ok...haha). His lemonade is the BOMB...I mean really, people. It is soooooo delightfully refreshing. I witnessed grown men practically weep from the sheer joy they experienced while drinking it. And the food overall was very tasty. There were plenty of condiments and salsas, as well. Oscar arrived at a party I attended 5 hours late without notice, and when he did he was alone without his assistants as supposed to, burned the food, and also without some of the items that were supposed to be on the menu. He also had a terrible attitude and obviously could not handle the job. Please take this warning and stay away if you want to have a worry-free party, I'd go with someone that I have personal reference to. We hired these caterers for a surprise birthday party for my mom and aunt. When I saw their website and read their reviews I felt pretty confident about using them. I was impressed that they had a variety of items on their menu, including pupusas because that was particularly what we were looking for. We had found someone else that did it but they were booked already so we went with them. We also ordered the carne asada tacos and a drink (ensalada). The day of the party came and Oscar called me early to confirm the details for the party. We had arranged for them to serve from 6:30-8:30pm and so he told me they'd arrive at 6pm to set up since it took them 30 minutes. It was a SURPRISE party so we had things on somewhat of a time table. Oscar called me close to 6 to tell me they were running late but somehow that would benefit me because they would stay for the time they were hired (2 hours). We had so much going on that I honestly didn't have time for that but I was not happy, as it set us behind schedule. Thankfully the DJ had arrived early and saved our party (the DJ was GREAT! djerickve@facebook.com if you need one), as we had planned to have the food there and ready before my mom and aunt arrived since our guests were there earlier (thus the 'surprise' party...). Since we didn't have any food available, the DJ played music at least ... They did not arrive until closer to 7 (I don't know the exact time because we were busy entertaining our guests). One of the first things Jorge said to me was how far we were and he was seriously complaining about it. I understand we are far from LA but according to the website its part of the service area...if it's too inconvenient then don't offer it? Also, he did not seem to like the area where we wanted them to set up and asked if there was a closer area so that it'd be easier for them to unload their items...honestly as a host, you have so much going on that the last thing you want after you've spent weeks planning for an event is the person you've hired to complain about the area you've designated. Next problem, Jorge asked me if we had sugar because the drink we ordered (ensalada) seemed to need it. I tasted it and yes, it did definitely need sugar. But how unprofessional is that, to ask the people who hired you for sugar?? We were so busy and had to stop and get sugar... but it was for our guests so we didn't have much of a choice. Next...the food got going and Oscar had told me over the phone the pupusas were not greasy and very good, which is important if you have had good pupusas and that was the primary reason we hired them. Negative on that ... they were greasy, to the point where one of our guests' daughter threw up. They also were not made the traditional way. We ordered revuelta's which typically have beans, chicaron, cheese... these did not have beans for some reason. Onto the tacos... another disappointment. They were greasy and not very good as far as flavor goes. As if this all weren't enough, I saw it was about 8:45pm and asked Jorge when they'd be leaving. He said they were leaving at 9pm. I told him I thought they would be staying longer because they had arrived closer to 7pm and since it takes them 30 minutes to set up, that should not have been included in the 2 hour time they were supposed to stay. He said they'd stay until 9:15 so we had the DJ announce it at the time for our guests. I did not appreciate that Jorge first didn't have the courtesy to let us know they were getting ready to leave and then he didn't seem to really like the fact that I asked him to stay longer, as I thought that was fair. After all it wasn't my fault they were late... In the future I suggest you guys advise your clients of what time you plan on leaving so they can let their guests know, especially if you are late! I truly wanted to like their service and like I said was impressed by the variety of food items they offer. However, in the future I think I'd prefer to just go with taco guys because they at least show up on time and know how to make good tacos. The WORST taco and hot dog guy ever...this was my first time hiring a taco and bacon wrapped hotdog guy for a party and I was so excited about it too. I found Oscar online and read his reviews so I decided to call him. He seemed really nice and legit so i made an appointment so he could do a walk through and to give him a 50% deposit AND this was 2 months prior to my party. At the time we met, I thought he was really professional and I felt really comfortable and confident in hiring him. A week before my party I emailed Oscar to confirm with him and he replied that everything is ready to go so I felt I had nothing to worry about. So the day of my party he was supposed to be there at 2pm to set up and start serving my guests at 230pm. I told my guests to arrive at 130pm so that they wouldnt miss the tacos and bacon wrapped hotdogs because Oscar was only going to be there for 2 hours. All my guests were hungry and so excited to eat. 215pm came, no Oscar. I called him and he said he was stuck in traffic and was running an hour late. I had to call him, he didnt even bother to inform me that he was running late. Luckily, I had other food for my guests to munch on while we waited for our main course An hour passed I called him back and his phone was shut off, it kept going to voicemail. At this point I was fuming, I couldnt believe he was doing this to me on my special day and he already took half my money. He called me 3 hours later saying his phone had ran out of battery so he couldnt call me and was on his way. I was so pissed off but my guests were still there and I wanted to feed them so I still wanted him to come. When he FINALLY arrived 4 HOURS later, he was not prepared whatsoever! I paid him to feed 100 ppl and he had maybe 100 dollars worth of food. It was just so ghetto and pathetic! While he was cooking the hotdogs, that fool had the nerve to tell my guests that his food was worth the wait. 4 HOURS!!!! of waiting to eat burnt hotdogs without all the conditments he promised he would have. On top of it, he didnt even cook the tacos or make the nachos. This guy Oscar is a JOKE!!! I thought this was a nightmare. What "professional" business person would do this?!! So I start asking him about this he tells me that since I want a receipt he has to charge me taxes.....WTF AGAIN????? ok anyway, he shows up to our event, said he would have 2 helpers, only has 1 helper, proceeds to start preparing the food ok good or so I thought. As he starts serving, my guests see this and start going up to his tables to get served. He was supposed to have Carne Asada, Chicken, and Al Pastor tacos, hamburgers and bacon wrapped hot dogs. He had 2 small electric grills going.. SMALL ELECTRIC GRILLS for a party that was supposed to feed 190 guests. I had Oscar and his father Jorge cater my sister-in-laws bridal shower purely based on Yelp reviews so I feel I should share how let-down I was by the whole experience. I contacted him a month before the event by phone and after we had worked out the details, I sent him an email and a check for 1/2 the fee to confirm. Two days before the event I called again to confirm and he asked me to re-send the email with all the party details which I did. That should have been the first red flag - why didn't he have all the details from our call and my previous email. Anyway, he was supposed to arrive at 12:30pm (the shower was 1-4pm) and at 12:45 he called to say he was having car trouble that morning and was running a little late. No worries - these things happen! At 1:30pm I called and he said his car had broken down by the side of the road and he was waiting on his Dad to come with another vehicle. At 2:30pm his Dad and 2 employees finally arrived. This is the menu we had agreed on - Chicken and Carina Asada tacos Vegetarian Tacos Chicken Nachos Guacamole Salsa Fresh Fruit Gallon of fruit Juice This is what we got Chicken and Carina Asada tacos - tasted good Vegetarian Tacos - lots of onions, a few mushrooms and even less zucchini. Very disappointing. Chicken nachos with runny cheese sauce - very bad quality. Salsa - green, saucy type - cheap but tasted ok. No Guacamole or Fresh fruit Gallon of fruit juice which they never offered us - it sat by the BBQ the whole time. The service was very slow, Jorge would bring a few tacos and then wait until we asked for more. Maybe we were supposed to get up and self-serve? Jorge seemed to be happy to serve so I'm not sure about that. And even though Oscar was very apologetic about the whole thing, didn't charge me the other 50% outstanding and offered to host another party for free I wouldn't trust them and will not be using these caterers again. I hired oscar 2 weeks ago. He was supposed to show up at 12pm. My 4 year old son's party is from 12 to 5pm. i wanted chicken and beef tacos and bacon wrapped hot dogs. We called him. He said he is on his way. He is stuck in pomona. My coincidently my cousin called me 10 minutes later and said she is on her way from fontana. She arrived in el monte 45 after we hung up. But the guy thats supposedly stuck in traffic and driving in the same direction as my cousin isnt here yet. If there was traffic then how did my cousin get here in time and she was further away? LIAR! Ok so lets continue. we called him againat 1pm. he didnt pick up. we called him 10 minutes later no answer. we called him every 10 minutes and no answer. The phone would ring 2 times and then go to voicemail. so he obviously hit the hang up key to push it to voicemail. He finally arrived at 345pm. The party is over at 5. so it takes him 30 minutes to set up. and then cooking the food another 15 minutes. so by the time he is ready to serve the first person the party is over... I had to order pizza to feed 40 hungry kids and 30 hungry adults. We spent over $300 on pizza(from dominos, pizza hut and papa johns so they would be able to get the food here faster than just from 1 company). I had to go pick up KFC as well. Spent $200 on chicken. I told oscar we dont need his services anymore. He arrived almost 4 hours late. Party is over in an hour. I requested the refund of my deposit. He refused and said he is here now so if I ask him to go then the he will not refund my $250. He didnt refund my money and then just left. I called the better business bureau and filed a complaint. I just went to the courthouse and filed a small claims case against him. AT LEAST SOMEONE WILL FINALLY GET SERVED.... What kind of lowlife looser would ruin a 4 year old's birthday party? The food was VERY good, he was not late, nothing was burned, and a year and half later, I still remember the yumminess that came from that bacon-wrapped dog. I called him several times, I had lots of questions and I have OCD when it comes to detail and he followed through everytime. Hired Oscar for Halloween party in Long Beach area. I expected 50 guests and wanted to keep things simple, so I only ordered tacos. His website was cool, and he was very polite over the phone offering some good suggestions. The handling of the deposit (50%) was fine using Square, and I received my receipt instantly. He showed up a little late, but managed to serve by our agreed time. Most of my guests liked the food, but a few said some of the tacos were a little greasy. The guys above me must be friends.. The cook was late and to top it off the food was mediocre pretty bland ....ok if your not expecting much. The guy was nice but sorry to say that wont make up for the food. And the meat had fat and chewy muscle in it now i know why they charge so cheap. I first met Oscar several years ago while working security for an event. Being a big boy attracted to good food, I found my way to Oscar and fell in love (with the food...but he's a great guy too). The bacon wrapped hot dogs need no explanation of their excellence. The Al Pastor, Carne Asada, and Chicken tacos are all delicious too. A few co-workers and myself started using him for our personal events like Halloween parties, Christmas parties, birthdays, anniversaries....pretty much everything. He goes above and beyond to make sure everyone is taken care of, and even when things go wrong (we didn't leave enough room for him to set up, rain, us underestimating how much our fat ass friends eat, etc) he adapts and overcomes. Whether it's 300 people or 30 people, this is the guy to use. I have been to dozens of events he has catered, and not once was he late, burned the food, or forgotten anything. Once one of him employees didn't show, but he just worked double time and handled everything himself. So perhaps the bad reviews had something out of his control happen, but not for a second should you believe he has a bad or unprofessional attitude. The guy is so nice and polite he reminds me of a Hispanic Mr. Rogers. Do yourself a favor and book this guy, tell him Greg and Morgan referred you. read more

I usually don't write reviews but I want to acknowledge the superb service that my party and I relieved on New Yeats Eve. We were able to book the party last minute on New Years Eve with a great price. The food was excellent and the customer service was outstanding. If there was a 10 star option i would give a 15..Oscar and his father were an absolute delight to work with. They were the first to arrive at the party and one of the last to leave...they were there even before ME, setting up. They provided 100% professional services with SPECTACULAR food...before i was able to taste the food myself, every single person came to me and raved about the lemonade, finally when i got a chance to taste it, i understood why everyone kept going back for more..it was DELICIOUS...on top of that the tacos and bacon wrapped hot dogs were out of this world, more tasty than what i was expecting. Every time i went to their stand, i was always greeted with a smile...I will not longer hire anyone else to cater an event..Oscar and his family are officially in my black book. read more

yo oscars the man, i hired oscars services as a surprise for my bride at our wedding after party, she loves bacon wrapped hot dogs. the guy handled, and he had a few unexpected obstacles. 1st we had around 50 more people than expected, so like 80 to 100 peeps. but no problem oscar said, idk how the guy did it, but every one was super satisfiied and i'm still getting compliments on the food. then the guy had to work in near dark, but through and through the guy handled...my wife and i are super happy with his work, we'll use his business again fo sho. thanks oscar! read more
