Based on all the 5-star reviews of Gok Jee, I decided to try them for my Mom's 97th birthday party last night. From the first phone call with Mrs. Oh, I knew I was in good hands. She asked me to text her my address so she could quote me on delivery fee (which was reasonable considering I live in the Hlwd Hills), and we enjoyed texting each other. The 10-person meal was delivered on time (even a bit early - unheard of!), beautifully presented and expertly packaged. The cold dishes were sealed with commercial grade plastic wrap, the hot dishes were wrapped in plastic wrap, then foil, then another layer of plastic wrap, so they were still warm upon arrival. Every single dish was delicious and flavorful; my guests all commented on how good it was and most of them went for seconds. Even after that, we still have a ton of leftovers, so the portions are very generous (I ordered a 10-person meal and we had 11 big eaters!). It's refreshing to me to find a business owner that takes pride not only in their food and service, but also in their spirit and kindness. My friend catered a lunch with the following: - BEEF KIMBAP: Outstanding beef quality and flavor in a delicious kimbap! I'm not sure how Gok Jee was able to fit all the ingredients in this -- it's definitely not light on rice, which we appreciated! - JAPCHAE: Veggies to noodles ratio were pretty evenly split with just the right amount of sesame oil. -GALBI: It was still piping hot after ~1 hour drive! Loved the bite of the galbi, perfect sauce -- not too sweet or salty. Generous chunks of fat here and there. - SWEET SPICY CHICKEN: Fried just right, not too much batter with a bit of crisp. The sauce itself was also spot on and not overly sweet or spicy. - TOFU PANCAKE: Medium firm tofu beautifully topped with green onion, chili, diced kimchi, garlic and sesame seeds, - KIMCHI: Both cucumber and napa kimchi were SO GOOD. Did a good job with the catering I ordered! You can order online, and the owner is very responsive on phone and email! I asked for a change in pick-up time a day before and she was very accomodating. Fried dumplings, gulgogi kimbap, Korean fried chicken, japchae, and various pajeons (pancakes), all were tasty. I ordered off the online menu, and it's supposedly 48oz per order, but I don't know how accurate that weight is actually since some of the orders I received definitely felt lighter than 48oz. I ended up ordering approx 60lbs (960oz) of food, and it fed approx 50 people (majority adults, some children,m; your mileage may vary)! The fried dumplings felt light and the Korean fried chicken was fast to go, so I should have ordered more of those. In any case, the food was good and well-received by my friends. Since I had 50 pounds of galbi, egg rolls and a whole pig on top of catering, I only ordered for 30 people, when in actuality I had 50 guests. I was dubious if it would have been enough for 30 ppl. I highly doubt that it would have been enough food if I had 30 very hungry guests and only this lady's catered food. So, I would say, they don't give you enough food. For the amount of food you get, it's expensive. Also, she made a substitution without letting me know, to a poorer quality meat. I ordered bulgogi kimbap. What I got was bulgogi kimbap and more than half, cheap luncheon meat kimbap. I would have left that out because it was embarrassing to serve to our guests, but i was worried that there wouldnt be enough carbs so I left it out. The Kung Pao shrimp was over-battered and used way too much sugar. Yeah, sure, no msg but tons of sugar. The fried chicken must've been decent bc the guests ate that all up. Our church group caters from this place often... And there's a reason for it. Bulgogi - THis is bomb here. It's so juicy and tender. I wish they add more bulgogi juice cause I like to pour the juice on top of my bap. Chicken wings - Very sweet. It's much too sweet for me, but chances are y'll like it. The pieces are big too. These are typically the first to run out. Jap Chae - It's nice and glossy. I like the kind that has little veggies and whole lotta noodles. Their jap chae isn't that kind. Potato Salad - Disgusting. Just Gamja Mayo. Beef/Fish Pancakes covered with Egg - They will steal your heart with the first bite. OMO-Nah they are so gooooooooood. I can nibble on those all day, whether with ketchup, tarter sauce, or no sauce xD Galbi Jeem - This is my favorite korean dish so my assesment is unfair. Their galbi jeem kinda whack. Can't explain it. Kim Chi - I don't know. My mom makes the bomb kim chi for some reason. My mom can not cook, hell, i think she will come in near last place in the UK in a cooking contest, but her kim chi is the shiznits so we never got kim chi from these folks. Bulgogi: perfectly seasoned, sweet and salty korean beef with vegetables Fish pancake: the fish they use is pollack and I really enjoyed this because it's thinner than usual fish pancakes so less of a "fishy" flavor Shrimp fried rice: probably the least favorite out of all the items just because the texture was a little too mushy? I think the rice was over cooked/too moist for stereotypical fried rice Tofu: OMG this was so good. If I figured out how to make this tofu recipe I seriously wouldn't mind going vegan hehhh. It was marinated in some kind of sweet soy and had this green onion/pepper mixture on top. We were looking for a catering company for my moms birthday and decided to go with this place due to great reviews. Everyone over here is really nice. We ordered a couple of different items off the menu that came out to a little more than we expected. This place isn't the cheapest. The food seemed fresh and tasted good. They had our order ready the next day, and waited after closing hours for us. The only downside was that the galbi jjim we ordered seemed over priced compared to what we got. It would have been better if they packaged it in a smaller tub instead of throwing unnecessary bones in there to make it look full. Since customer service was good, they saved a star from 3 to 4. Ok so... we hired Gokjee to cater the food for our wedding in April and here's the breakdown: 1. Food was great. More than enough food for the guests. We ordered 150 people's worth and we weren't short, despite having some wedding crashers (thank you, older Korean relatives). 2. Presentation was great. We only ordered the food and none of the services that usually come with it since we hired wait staff separately so my mom picked up the fancy looking silver platters a day before and returned it, cleaned, the day after. So then why am I not giving them a 5 out of 5? Because dealing with this lady was SUCH a crazy ride. When my mom and I went back to confirm our order and pay, she kept going ON and ON about the fact that we're costing her a lot of money since we placed the order last year and the price of meat apparently skyrocketed (did it though?). She promised to send eating utensils and cake plates with the food but didn't so one of my guests ran to the nearest store to buy it for us (which I didn't know till after the wedding). She insisted we pay the whole thing in cash - that's multiple thousands, which ugh whatever too late to find a different food vendor days before the wedding. In love! I threw a 100 day party for my baby. (In Korean culture, 100 day is a big big milestone in a baby's life so we celebrate!) It was a very small party of 8 adults, one big child, a toddler and two babies. I actually went to Shin Mi Catering before coming to Gok Jee, and for Shin Mi, their minimum is 200 dollars for a buffet for 10 people. That's not something I needed. I needed only certain kinds of food because we were going to grill galbi and I was going to make the seaweed soup myself. At Gok Jee, the lady who took my order understood me, and advised on what kind of things I should order to complement my plan. The day when I picked up the food, the lady gave me a five dollar discount because they seasoned one of the pancakes with soysauce instead of salt by mistake, which they really did not need to do because it tasted great anyway. She said that they did not have time to make it again, but I could tell she was disappointed to give me a product that was not up to her standards, which shows that she really cares about quality. But again, it tasted fantastic and no one at my party know what color it is supposed to be so it's all good! The veggies, pancakes, japchae, kimchi all tasted excellent, and everyone at my party really enjoyed the food. I am very very very picky with my kimchi, but their kimchi was excellent. If you can nail kimchi down, than it is safe to trust the rest of the food. Oh and did I mention, excellent pricing too? LUV THIS PLACE! I went with Gok Jee purely on reviews since I never had any of their food at any event before. I took a chance and it paid off! I had them cater my 40th bday for about 50 people this past Saturday, but it practically could have fed 100+. I considered people eating more than once so I increased the portions for each dish. Since the party was at a house, chances of eating throughout the night was high. I really liked how I was able to choose the items I wanted and wasn't restricted to a set buffet menu. I chose 16 items on my menu because I certainly wanted variety so I can cater to people with different tastes. I noticed they even threw in some regular kimchi in addition to my cucumber one. In a way I got a discount because she even threw in some extra for some of the items and even had free delivery. My scrumptious menu consisted of: Galbijim, Fried Shrimp, Zucchini Jun, Spicy Chicken Wings, Chicken/Veg Kebob (cute appetizer size), Fried Pork Cutlet, Japchae, Baby Kimbap, Sangsung Jun, Dongurang Tang, Fried Veg Dumpling, Fried Mushroom, Beansprout, Spinach, Kimchi, Cucumber Kimchi, White Rice The delivery guy was kind enough to set the burners for us. I wasn't there yet so he even placed my menu cards under each dish because my friends did not know what dish was what. The food was a success and there was plenty of it!
