For a hole in the wall Mexican restaurant, I had high hopes for cheap delicious authentic Mexican food. It was okay priced. But the taste was not there. We tried 3 different meats: steak, pastor, and barbacoa. They were all a little lacking in flavor. The pastor had the most flavor of course, but it still wasn't amazing. The employees were nice. The place had a fair amount of customers. But the empty tables were dirty. People threw their own trash away, but the tables were never wiped clean. I don't think we will be coming back read more

Stopped off at the latest addition to Roanoke unique restaurants today. I had to break from my diet to try out the tacos de carne asada and Carnitas. Both were well prepared and delicious. They had a red and green sauce both of which were tasty. The refried beans were also very excellent. This place is authentic and so they have tacos de tripas and menudo. If you enjoy good food come on by and enjoy some. I am updating this review. They didn't have prices on the menu the first time and still don't have their prices listed. Also the quality of the meat was not so great! A lot of fat and gristle. It was over 9.00 for the 3 taco plate and a coke. There are much better places at that price point. I may come back to try something else out but they need to impress their quality and list their menu prices. OMG!!!! Finally some bomb Mexican food in TX!! Granted it is attached to a gas station, but who cares! I'm not boujie. There are a ton of options, but I believe you have to order a whole meal so prepare yourself for a lot of food. I don't think there are any a la carte options. The only beef (see what I did there) I had with the place is that the prices were not listed on the menu and we ended up spending a little more than we were expecting. Also, they do not have water so you either have to bring your own, get one at the gas station shop next door, or order a soda from the fountain / bottle. We did however receive a mountain of food and left stuffed. However, I am not complaining. It was a real treat and felt like home (CA). Now, lets get to the food. Dear lord. I felt like I was eating at my old babysitters home. Suuuuuuuuuuper authentic. The rice was perfect. The beans took me to another planet. The bistec was so flavorful and the chicken was pretty good too. I got the two taco plate with a sope. It was so much food, but I just had to eat it all. My husband ordered the carnitas plate with tortillas and he was so full! He said it was wonderful. I will never succumb to Tex-Mex again! We will definitely return. Everyone that came in after us ordered tamales! That's what we are gonna try next!! This place opened in the old Churches Chicken building that was there for at least 12 years... For a gas station taco joint, Tacos Azteca barely lives up to the rep. First, there are no menus, everything is on the overhead display behind the register... without prices. The easier to make the prices up on the fly, I suppose. I had their whole fried tilapia. It comes with a bed of rice, some iceberg lettuce, and a couple slices of avocado. Looks and tastes just like someone dropped a whole tilapia in a vat of hot oil. Nothing spectacular, but not awful. My son ordered three carne Asada tacos with beans and rice. The most I can offer is that the canned beans they use must be a pretty good brand... the orange colored rice was in need of some serious help though. Store bought corn tortillas accompanied my meal, and we added a single pork tamale. The portion of the tamale that was edible was tasty, but both ends were so dry and hard that I stabbed through my styrofoam plate with one. Ambiance you say? Loud! Obnoxious musica ranchera blaring through tinny speakers accompanied the overbearing whir of the blender, on the front counter.( used to make milkshakes for the owner and pal... NOT on the menu. ) My wife reported, halfway through our meal, that the ladies bathroom smelled of urine, I did not visit the men's, and thus cannot comment... only imagine. With Taco Bell only yards away, it's not likely this place will last long under the current management. Needless to say we will not be back. read more

I'd love to leave a 5 star review for this place because their food is really good, but I can't because they constantly close 2+ hrs before their posted closing time. I've attempted to eat here 4 times, with only two successful trips. Most recently I drove from Alliance over to Roanoke just for their food, and they were closed. It was around 7:45pm, but they're advertised as being open until 10pm. They were not, yet again. This wasn't the first time this has happened and it really makes me question whether or not I will return. I can understand if business is slow and closing up a little ahead of schedule, but more than 2hrs without any sort of notification is a little ridiculous. Especially during peak dinner hours. I'd frequent the place if I could rely on the fact that they adhere to their posted hours of operation, but until they either change their hours or stay open until advertised; I won't return. This place is legit. Yes if you are in a hurry probably not for you. If you want real Mexican food made to order then it's worth the wait. I have been several times and taken several different people. They all feel out of place as we are the only non Hispanics in this place. This should tell you how great it is. Really good food and made fresh to order... I don't believe in giving less stars for service or how long it took to get the food. I strictly base my decision on how the food tastes... no need to waste anyone's time with complaining about how long food took. That being said, the food was so amazing. True Mexican style food. Which is SO hard to find in the DFW. Pozole, gorditos, enchiladas, quesadillas and tacos were truly tasty and met our expectations. Will definitely be coming back again. read more

Tacos Azteca is THE BEST taco spot in Roanoke & surrounding cities! Better than the Salad Bowl & Memos Tacos. I've been waiting for a place like this! I usually have to go to Mexico to get it. The staff is super friendly & remembers your face every time! My husband and I eat here weekly. Try their Melon Juice! It is amazing!!!! Edit to Add: Hongry J (review below ) clearly has never been to Mexico or knows what good Mexican food tastes like (probably why he thinks Taco Bell is better). Nice little place. Long time ago someone said to me "if you see a taco place attached to a gas station, you know it is authentic" and that seems to be the case. We had the carnitas, barbacoa, lengua, picadillo and pastor tacos and they are really good. My least favorite was the "pastor" simply because I was expecting it to be spit-grilled in the authentic Mexican fashion, but these are pan fried (taste is ok tho). The horchata and Jamaica drinks are also very tasty; you can find rice bits at the bottom of the horchata, which means it is made there and not diluted from a syrup. The one problem with this place is that it doesn't seem to have AC, so don't order to eat in unless you like eating at really warm temperatures. The second time around we ordered take out, and we switched to the Mexican sandwich (the meat is the same as on the taco) the portions are so generous you could share a sandwich. The sandwich itself is pretty large and (well stuffed with meat, avocado, lettuce and refried beans) and it comes with a large portion of fries. read more

Sadly, the food didn't live up to the location. While the menu is reasonably comprehensive, the food itself didn't convey enough flavor to each dish. The #1 plate, which includes 2 tacos and one sope. I picked barbacoa and pastor for the tacos, with bisteca for the sope. The barbacoa was rather flavorless, which was unfortunate. The bisteca was rather bland too, but the pastor was decent. While it wasn't as flavorful as other taquerias, it was the best of the three meats that I chose. I would suggest skipping the limonada too. Perhaps they have good breakfast tacos, but I really hope it was just an off day. read more

Stopped in today as i was craving some mexican food and thought i would give the new cat in town a try. New to Roanoke, Taco Azteca brings a bit of Mexico with its atmosphere and food. The restaurant itself reminded me of being in a mercado.with its simple decor and flavor rich aroma. I ordered my food to go which included super nachoes with pastor, menudo and a taco plate. The serving of nachos was HUGE and they did not skimp on toppings (which i hate when places do that). Menudo was good. I thought it could use a bit more flavor but again, they did not skimp on the protein. The taco plate came with 3 tacos of which i got pastor,lengua, and carnitas. Delicious. All the meat i have to say is full of flavor and the onions and cilantro that come on top of each taco adds a nice freshness. Complete with rice, beans and a tiny salad. This was our second visit and unfortunately our last. Our first trip I went inside and they were dead but had to wait for someone to come take my order and even though the service was lacking & aloof the overall experience was still tolerable considering the quality of the food. Today when I arrived the drive thru was empty so I pulled up placed my order, paid and that's where the wait began. After sitting at the window waiting on my order for 25 minutes I began trying to get their attention to find out what the hold up was but got no response; honked the horn etc.. yet nothing. Finally I backed up to the speaker and a woman responded and I asked what the status of my order was to which she responded "oh we're really backed up with phone orders and we process those first." Needless to say I was livid, what food business gives precedence to phone in orders over customers in your face that have already paid. When I expressed my disbelief and frustration to her she said "oh I've include a business card so that you can call your order next time and have it ready." So let me get this straight, the next time I call in my order and I pull up to the drive through and I'm still stuck in the queue because they are too busy processing other phone orders??? Tacos Azteca is an awesome find! Conveniently located off of 114 in downtown Roanoke in a gas station. Walking in, the lobby was surprisingly bigger than u would think..and FULL of happy customers enjoying the food. The menu has a wide variety of Mexican cuisine, all the classic favorites: tamales, tacos, tostadas, elote, burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas and more! I was so excited when I saw that they opened a location near my home! I used to go to the one in Grand Prairie all the time after class. I love getting their elote and lengua tacos. This is my new favorite place for lunch, I must eat there at least 3 times a week. The staff help me with my Spanish and make me feel very welcome, especially Jessica and Fernando. I've had most things on the menu and have never been disappointed, the tacos are all great and so are the soups and fresh waters. Their lunch business seems to have really taken off, Roanoke is very lucky to have such authentic, fresh, made to order Mexican restaurant. I'd recommend the pastor tacos, carne deshebrada tacos, the posole soup, caldo de rez soup, the parrillada platter (grilled meat plate), the elote en vasso, and the horchata drink. read more

Today was my second visit. The first visit was excellent, but I think the owner we there making sure everything was top notch. Today I ordered 3 tacos and got 5. When I told they guy who took my order that I only ordered 3, he showed me his order pad where he wrote 5. He shook his head and waived me off. Didn't offer a refund or a comment. Also, the meat on my beef tacos had a lot of fat, and gristle. Since I enjoyed this authentic restaurant so much the first time I will give them another chance. Lesson learned to ask to see the order pad when placing an order. I thought my bill was high when I paid, but there is no way of know since there aren't prices on anything. Food was cold and there was a weird taste to the Tortas. We spent about $80.00 here, feeding a family of 7. Bathroom had zero soap and need a cleaning. I think the convenient store is responsible for that. They forgot to get our to go order of menudo and when we went to ask about it, the man who helped was not available. The lady at the counter doesn't speak or understand English. Yelp photos are not the same of course and I sad to say I didn't have the same great experience as others. Very rude staff. Online says they close at 8pm so my husband and I get there at 7:15pm and when we walk in a lady who I assume is the manager tells us they're closed. My husband mentions to her that the front door doesn't even have the times and that the online time should be updated and proceeds to tell her that it's a shame because the food looks delicious. Anyway as we turn to walk out the lady turns away from us and mumbles something rude under her breath in Spanish.
