Somewhere along the way Oncle became Noon, the cakes and coffee gave more ground to bingsoo and the place changed enough that I still occasionally catch myself comparing what is there now with what I remember being there before. That may be part of why I have kept coming back. I remember Oncle being one of those easy little places where the service felt unusually attentive. Young guys behind the counter who seemed genuinely engaged, checking on things, keeping the room moving, making the whole experience feel cared for. Noon still occupies the same address and the bones of a good dessert shop are obviously still there, but the experience today feels considerably more transactional. The bingsoo itself is not bad. The machine is doing what it is supposed to do. The ice has that fine, soft, almost snow like texture that separates good Korean bingsoo from somebody simply attacking a block of ice with machinery. The problem, for me, is everything they put on top of it. I have tried enough of the menu at this point that I don't think this is a matter of choosing the wrong flavor. Strawberry, mango, the more elaborate combinations they consistently lean too sweet. Syrups, sauces, creams, fruit. Eventually all that sugar begins flattening the very thing that makes bingsoo so good. The delicacy of the ice itself. Instead of tasting individual ingredients, you start tasting sweetness in several different costumes. That is where Noon loses me compared with the better versions of this dessert. A great bingsoo lets you keep eating because nothing overwhelms anything else. Here, a few spoonfuls in, I'm usually wishing someone had simply stopped adding things. Then there is the experience of going. Parking in this plaza at the wrong hour can turn dessert into a minor logistical exercise. The lot is tight, dinner traffic makes it worse and the alternative is hunting around outside. Once you make it in, seating operates with that awkward first come first served ambiguity where someone who ordered after you can apparently have a table secured while you stand there holding dessert and waiting for another group to leave. The room itself often feels oddly unattended. Tables linger before being cleared. Surfaces can feel sticky. Nobody seems particularly responsible for making the dining room feel reset between customers. When it gets crowded, all of that compounds. People hovering for seats, groups talking over one another, trays sitting around, everyone negotiating the room themselves. None of this makes Noon terrible. That is probably the important distinction. The actual shaved ice is good. Some of the combinations are enjoyable. There are plenty of people who will probably prefer the sweeter style more than I do. And clearly the place has found an audience. Noon's current social presence identifies it as a Gardena bingsoo shop at this same Western Avenue location. I just find myself wondering why I keep making the effort. Maybe some of it is nostalgia for Oncle. Maybe I keep hoping the next visit will recover whatever made the old place feel more personal. But when getting dessert requires fighting for parking, negotiating a table, sitting in a room that feels half managed and then eating bingsoo that is considerably sweeter than I want it to be, there are easier ways to spend an evening.

I first learned of the shop via Toast last year when they offer a $2.00 birthday treat. My son has tried most of the local boba shops so I wanted to see how this ranks on his list. I've been coming to Okrumong for years, more times than I can reasonably count. I've brought my…read moreparents, my kids, friends, people visiting from out of town. It has become one of those places you stop debating because you already know what you're going to get. In the South Bay, when somebody wants bingsu, this is still one of the first places that comes to mind. And the frustrating thing is that the dessert is genuinely very good. The snow is properly fine and soft, closer to fresh powder than shaved ice and the flavors are restrained enough that you can bring almost anyone here without worrying that they're going to be assaulted by sugar. The red bean works. The mochi balls are excellent and worth adding, even if you'll feel mildly extorted every time you pay for extras. I've worked through most of the menu over the years and rarely had anything fundamentally bad. The taiyaki deserves some credit too. The cheese version in particular is ridiculously satisfying and the red bean is dependable. Coffee is forgettable, but nobody should be driving here because they heard whispers about the espresso program. The problem is everything surrounding the food. Okrumong has always been expensive and once you start adding mochi or toppings, a simple dessert can become an oddly serious financial decision. I can forgive expensive when the product earns it, and much of the time the bingsu does. What becomes harder to forgive is paying premium prices while feeling as though your presence is something the people behind the counter have to tolerate. What makes it stranger is that this doesn't feel like some anonymous chain staffed by people who happened to clock in that afternoon. You get the sense that the people running the place are personally connected to it, which should make the hospitality feel warmer. Somehow, it often has the opposite effect. There is a reluctant energy behind the counter, as though serving customers is the interruption rather than the reason the doors are open. After enough visits, you stop writing it off as somebody simply having a bad day. That matters more than people think. Hospitality isn't performing happiness or pretending every customer is your long lost cousin. It is simply making people feel that you are glad they chose to spend their time and money with you. A hello. A little patience. Some warmth. Okrumong has a product people clearly still want, yet too often the experience around it feels like the business is operating on whatever affection people have left from its better years. And you can feel those years receding. There was a time when places like this felt like destinations. Lines, energy, people making a special trip for Korean desserts that were harder to find elsewhere. Now there are more choices, better designed cafes, more interesting dessert shops and operators who understand that good food alone doesn't buy permanent loyalty. I still come back because, annoyingly, the bingsu is good enough to keep pulling me back. That may be the most honest compliment and criticism I can give them. I'd love to see this place feel cared for again, because the actual product deserves better than the experience surrounding it.

The ice cream was good and the Asian-inspired flavors were definitely different from the usual. It didn't completely blow my socks off, but it was a solid treat. I kept thinking a little syrup or extra topping would've taken it up another level. Overall, glad I tried it. Half the fun of these food events is randomly discovering stuff you normally wouldn't eat anyway. I'd probably check out their Torrance brick-and-mortar location sometime and give them another shot.
