Tacos El Rey is a long time family favorite. This is their original location located off of Sutro and is locally owned by a nice family and operated. I've seen the owner from time to time and is she is always friendly and accomodating. Her kids will be seen working at this location or Mae Anne in NW. I had to have a milanesa torta today, so I drove over from Wells to get one. We also ordered menudo and quesadillas for my kids. Service was friendly and prompt and food was delicious and hot. My only complaint is paying extra for milanesa and barely having any meat in my torta. Their prices have drastically increased since the last time my family and I dined in. The restaurant is usually fairly busy, but it wasn't at their dinner service tonight. (I'm not complaining about having the place to ourselves.) Another suggestion would be for your restrooms to be routinely deep cleaned and to be updated. I'll always be back and stay as long as it's not a full house. read more

Well, here I am again, having the Mondayiest Monday, that ever Mondayed. Again, Tacos El Ray to the rescue. It is amazing how much good food can improve my day. Yet another failure in the burrito department in Reno/Sparks. Have been trying for 6 years to find a truly delicious burrito-- no luck yet am sorry to say. This one was supposed to have whole beans ( never found one) onions and cilantro ( none of this either...), just onions. Meat was the shredded beef. OK, nothing to write home about. Asked for the "wet" to be half red and half green. Was all red, of course. Was supposed to have cheese on top-- never found that either. Icing on the cake was that the sauce was ENCHILADA red sauce not salsa, and whatever green stuff they might have had never got close to this thing. The one thing I really dislike in Mexican food is red enchilada sauce and I have a huge amount that the burrito is floating in. Won't be back. Tip. Do not order one ala carte sope with a side order of rice and beans. It cost 11.99 for a combo platter with three sopes and a side of rice and beans. It had been far too long since I had stopped in. The fried shrimp tacos were so good. The shrimp had been coarsely chopped after frying, so they didn't try to slide out of the tortillas. Holy guacamole! This place is the bomb! I did some mass ordering for my son and his buddies at the rehab that my son is staying. OMG.. the savory smells of the spices in the air. I ordered the birria quesadillas, asada torta, and some asada tacos. Bags of Mexican food deliciousness. The asada was spiced perfectly. Birria quesadillas in liquid, ooo la la. Muy deliciosas! This place was crowded Sunday afternoon and I need to do some reconnaissance on this area. Looks like there might be another restaurant and a bakery here in this strip mall. A nice mexican sit down taqueria with all the usual favorite eats: tacos, enchiladas, tostada, posole, menudo, combo plates etc. I enjoyed two carne asada street tacos for under $5! Stopped here on a rainy day around 4 PM for a afternoon snack for the kids. Out running around and doing stuff. First off this parking lot was packed. Lots of people coming in and out but there's so many other businesses I wasn't sure if tacos El Rey was actually busy or not. Not too busy. We haven't been here for a while as the last two visits the Carne Asada tacos were Way over cooked. Almost hard like jerky, and full of oil. As if they've been sitting on the grill for quite a few hours. They were so oily I figured that they were deep-fried beef. So taking a chance, hopefully these are fresh and delicious as they used to be when we first started coming here. What we ordered: Six Carnitas tacos Six Carne Asada taco As we were waiting for our to go order, plenty people came in and picked up some food. So yeah the place is kind of busy on a Sunday afternoon. The order took about 15 - 20 minutes. It was not bad considering how busy the place was. The tacos were much better this time. Stopped in for a quick take away lunch. I over-ordered as I always do when I go to a new place...especially a new place that serves goat tacos! The goat tacos were wonderful, tender and tasty. And as I said I over-ordered. I ate the entire #1 combo of taco, torta and enchilada. It came with some of the best refried beans I have had in Reno. For my meat I chose the Asada. The small size of the bits of meat was taco perfection, almost like ground beef but not quite. OMG... I ordered Pozole. It was the poorest bowl of Pozole I have ever had. I ate a bowl of hominy cause I was really hungry. Please view what they call pork meat in the bowl. It llooked like a chicken wing. I would not dare put a piece of that in my mouth. The one piece that looked like a chunk of pork literally looked like it was scraped off the side of the pan. Tacos el rey was a good experience! The food is very reasonably priced, the options and variety is large, and the service was great. We ordered a burrito combo plate, a shrimp cocktail, and chips and guacamole. I don't like meat in my burritos but I didn't see a veggie burrito on the menu, luckily when I asked they said they could accommodate. The burrito was awesome, and even had big chunks of avocado in it (which I prefer to guac). The sides were beans and rice which were good except a bit too salty for my preference. The chips and guac was AMAZING. The guac is handmade and super chunky, and you get a huge plate of it. They even put jalapeños in it which gave a nice little kick. The chips were also a bit too salty for me. The shrimp cocktail was huge and really full. There were a lot of shrimp in it and some veggies too. The portion was great for the price. They also give you crackers which were great. The restaurant has a very homey feel and is authentic Mexican food. It was clean, the service was great, and we will be back! My wife and I came here a little before 1pm on a Friday. It is located in a small strip mall. After finding a place to park in this busy complex we walked in. The majority of the tables were already occupied and we made our way to the counter to order. We were about fourth in line. It looks inside to be very authentic. The menu boards are easy to read while you are standing in line and there are descriptions including ingredients which makes it easy to determine what you want by the time you get to the front of the line. The employee taking orders was friendly and helpful and we thought the prices were very reasonable. He provided us our sodas and a number for our order. We found an available booth and patiently waited as we saw other orders being delivered to the various tables. Our number was called a short time later and our food was delivered and looked yummy. I chose a carnitas wet burrito and my wife chose the chicken nachos. We were also given a small dish of salsa. The salsa was really good. Everything was very tasty and we enjoyed it. Definitely a hidden gem and we would recommend. They are open 7 days a week from 9am-9pm which makes it nice too. This is a really good place for authentic mexican food. Tried this place out and was very disappointed....took over 30 minutes to get our food and when it arrived it came wrong. Sent it back and they literally picked off the ingredients i originally ordered it with out leaving their finger marks imprinted in the food. I went over there for quick lunch and ordered fish tacos , I asked cashier what kind fish is that but she didn't know when my order came I think was cod fish but they sliced and after than fried that was horrible fish I had so oily and it was hard to eat , About Rice and beans was good not too salty tastey both was good, About mexican desert I love cream caramel but this one was not fresh and tasted like bitter I don't know why maybe too much baking powder that's reason when your desert get Bitter taste. This is by far my favorite taco place in Reno. I have tried a lot in Reno, and this is the one I keep coming back to once a week. It is extremely affordable, and everything I've tried has been amazing. I usually get carne asada tacos, tacos el pastor, birria tacos, seafood cocktail, tostados de ceviche, and of course their amazing guacamole. Their guacamole is nice and thick. Tacos El Rey has been on my bookmarks list for quite awhile and my teen son & I had the opportunity awhile back to finally check it out. We started by sharing a Tostada Mixta with ceviche, shrimp, and octopus. Oh. My! This was definitely a winner for both of us. The seafood was ample and succulent. We both were acknowledging our approval without saying a word. My son ordered a 3 Taco Combination Meal with 2 chorizo tacos and 1 with pork carnitas. This came with refried beans and rice. He especially enjoyed the chorizo ones. The tacos were a bit small, so next time he wants to add something else to his order and switch out the pork carnitas one for a different type of meat. I ordered the Steak and Chicken Fajitas. It came with rice and refried beans (which were some of the best I have had recently...simple, yet just right). When the plate came, it appeared that there wasn't much to make my fajitas with. As I started assembly; however, I could tell that there was much more there than it first appeared. I actually had more leftover after making 4 nicely filled fajitas. I definitely was full. My son enjoyed some Coke in a glass bottle and made with real sugar (the kind from Mexico). He loves that! I tried their fruit water. I cannot remember the flavor, but it's right there by the cash register. It's tasty and bright. The service was great. The gentleman at the register helped us figure out what we wanted and the waitress was really sweet. It felt nice and homey. We both want to return and probably try more of their seafood dishes. Best tacos ever had, they toast the tacos to perfection so it's fluffy Inside with a hint of crisp. Amazing, you can tell they made these in house not some store bought tacos. You have to try the beef tongue and beef cabeza meat. Incredibly tender cuts of meat and seasoned light but flavorful.
