I am more partial to Leo's tacos but I will say the burritos here are much better. I wish they had a few more salsas to choose from but each of their three salsas were delicious. They're all super friendly with a smile and it's nice to feel surrounded by community all coming to the same place to get their taco fix. TIP: Only downside I can find is that all they have available for taking their salsas to go are plastic bags, which can get a little messy. I found out about Tacos El Venado from a IG video a friend sent me of their carne asada fries, as soon as I saw that video I knew I had to try them. After checking out their page I saw they have 3 food truck locations, two in the San Fernando Valley (Van Nuys, & North Hollywood) and one in Korea Town. On their Instagram page them seem to have frequent post and daily stories with the days and times they'll be open. My review is specifically for their carne asada fries, they do a half an half with steak & al pastor with some nacho cheese cause..... man those fries are so damn good, so far the best I've had in LA, and they give you your money's worth. As with most taco stands, you'll have to go in with the expectation that only a few meats are worth your while. At El Venado, that would be the Asada and the Cabeza (when they have it). The best part about El Venado is really the number of options you get, from simple street tacos to quesotacos or even mulitas. Then you've got non-taco/burrito options like nachos, loaded potatoes, and fries. The service is OK and minimal. There is not much ambiance since it is a stand on a major street, eat at your car or take it home. Worst taco stand I've had in the valley. Ordered 1 buche Cali burrito, 1 asada Cali burrito and 1 taco de chorizo. Buche burrito was practically inedible. Ended up throwing the whole burrito away after a few bites and I am not a picky eater at all. Asada cali was slightly better. Asada tasted unmarinated and dry. Chorizo taco was probably the best part of the meal but also dry and flavorless. Tried all three salsas (red,green, and a yellowish one)--all of them were a good amount spicy but again flavorless and mostly water. As for service, workers were inattentive even though we were the only ones there for a bit. It was our first time there so we didn't know where to order and they basically ignored us while letting two people cut in front of us rather than direct us where we should place our order. When we finally did get our food they gave us our burritos unwrapped with a sheet of foil on top. Am I supposed to wrap my own burrito? I ended up handing it back to them and they wrapped it but overall they were dismissive and gave half assed service. 1 star because it was cheap in comparison to other tacos stands and the burritos were pretty big. I had this taco stand saved as "want to try" for a long time, and I finally tried it tonight. We got a Cali burrito with half cabeza and half asada, and I also got a tripas taco. Both items were almost inedible. The meat tasted very dirty - like they didn't clean the intestines or the head. I almost wanted to spit it out after the first bite, but we didn't have anything else to eat and it was too late to go out for more food, so I forced myself to eat most of it. This is my go-to place in the valley for an Al Pastor Burrito. Always great, and they have lots of side options. I usually go to the one in N. Hollywood, but the one in Van Nuys has better parking. Just make sure that they hear your order. The music and street noise can be challenging. I was in Nan Nuys tonight and ordered my Burrito with cheese and no beans. Preface: I work next to the one in NOHO, and a colleague was ranting and raving about Tacos El Venado, got all of us in the office pumped up about stacked tacos and burritos that you could hold like a baby. (Check out their IG, it's enough to get anyone salivating). I was going to be riding by at around 6:00 PM, which is about the time that they're fully up and running, so says the person that answered the phone for the NOHO location (should be the same in HP, they say). There was no line at all, likely because it was the second Friday after Lent started. I called out my order, had tacos in my hand in about 30 seconds. Tacos: Asada, Al Pastor, Lengua, Buche. A small bite was taken as served, prior to any sort of sauce; I've done this in order to gauge the meat and tortilla quality. The asada was a bit dry and bland, but otherwise unremarkable. A good pinch of salt was needed, and green salsa would really help. The al pastor taco is a bit unique in that has two important dimensions that are more critical than in other tacos: texture and marinade. These two dance a very balanced dance, and it's important to note how they meld together. The texture was very tender, which you would usually attribute as a positive, but is really not the case with al pastor; a crispy meat is generally preferred. The marinade was very smoky, and not sweet in the least. Unfortunately, due to the tender (less-cooked) meat, the marinade had not been "crisped" or charred onto the meat, and you could easily smear the marinade from the surface. Green salsa would be my choice here. The lengua was dry and bland. If I could quantify those two traits, I'd say it was 9/10 dry, and 9/10 bland, with 10 being most dry and bland, respectively. I've had "bad" lengua tacos before, and with these, I found out that dry and bland COULD be equally as offensive. I know it's hard to see when it has been overcooked, but it's obvious by texture. Quite a bit of salt was needed, and green salsa plus red salsa would be necessary. The buche was tough and chewy, but flavor was above average. A small pinch of salt would make it pop, and red salsa to help round it out. The tortilla was a pretty big offender on all of these tacos. They are the small bagged kind, which isn't offensive on its own, but the fact that they're soaked in an orange-ish mix of meat greases, then left on the griddle to slowly warm up, makes for a weird texture of something that was once soggy, is now dried out, but not yet crispy. Think of it as putting butter on your toast, heating it enough to soak the bread, and well before it starts to caramelize and get that nice crisp, you just take it off the heat. The same evening, a colleague stopped by the NOHO location and told a much different story. My conclusion was that I would not eat here again, but definitely DO want to try the NOHO location. read more
