This was my second visit to Tacos La Bala. I don't really like reviewing a place on my first visit, so I figured this would be my time to review. They like to advertise their Tacos de Trompo. Trompo is pork that has been seasoned with smoked paprika and other spices on a vertical rotisserie. The meat is then finished on the griddle, giving it an extra "crispy" texture. The style originates from Nuevo Leon, Monterrey - where this is considered street food. Right, so I ordered Tacos de Trompo, Tacos de Deshebrada (shredded beef) and a Chochinita Pibil Torta (pork that has been marinaded in citrus fruits, achiote and spices - gives it a "sweet" flavor.). Here are my thoughts: Tacos de Trompo - I had high expectations for this taco. It is advertised all over their menu and storefront. However, the Trompo was incredibly dry. It was rather bland and lacked the smokiness from the smoked paprika. It was edible, but not what Trompo should be. Tacos de Deshebrada - The shredded beef was tasty! I could taste the paprika, tomatoes and onions that are used to make the meat. It is incredibly juicy (as it should be with that rich sauce) and beefy. My only complaint is that it was rather tough. This happens when you overcook the meat, it dries the meat out and gives you a tough, rubbery like texture. Chochinita Pibil Torta - I don't know what it is with Tacos La Bala, but their Chochinita Pibil lacked flavor as well. Those citrus notes were non-existent and the meat was overly greasy. The torta is dressed nice with the Queso Fresco, perfectly ripe Avocado, crips Iceberg and ripe Tomatoes...but the star of the torta was a huge let down. Tacos La Bala did disappoint. I was hoping my second visit was not a reflection of my first visit. I hope they start focusing on making sure their food showcases the flavors and textures that a good authentic Mexican Taqueria should have. read more

Went in for some take out. The place was not packed. They took our order and they told us it was going to take 5-10 mins. Well 45 mins later our order was ready. And I think the only reason why they gave me my order was due to me standing there looking at the man prep the to go plates. He saw that I was looking at him and he reached to a shelve to crape a bag with plates in them. I was looking at this man for at least 5mins. Once he gave me the bag I asked him why was the order sitting there and not brought to me. He was speechless and when I asked him again he said to ask the guy on the register. Other that that while we were waiting for the food our table was dirty and never came to clean it. Another customer sat at another table and they came to clean it. I am not the biggest fan of mexican food, but the food that I got from Tacos La Bala was straight up DISGUSTING. In the quesadilla I ordered, the cheese was nowhere to be found. My three fajita tacos were all equally dry. Dry as hell. All of my food lacked moisture and flavor. I ordered my food to go, but my impression of the place was that it was dirty and dead. The location is big, with around 25-30 tables, with only 4 of them being occupied on a Saturday night. That should have been my first red flag. I usually write detailed reviews about my experiences in restaurants, but La Bala left me so freaking angry and disappointed that I am just going to give you one piece of advice: visit Taco Cabana, which is less than a block away from La Bala. Even if Taco's food is terrible, I promise you it will be way better than what you get at La Bala. read more

I have to add...they added birria with queso tacos, and oh my God, they are amazing. 3 tacos and the consomè. CRISPY, fresh, and flavorful. I also tried these at gringos, and a food truck place with high reviews, and these at tacos la Bala were much better. The thing with Birria is that they have to be crispy, and other places aren't crisping them up in the oil. They're dipping the tortilla in the red liquid but there isn't enough oil for a crisp, so they're soggy instead. Healthy? No, but you're not going for healthy on this delisciousness. read more

Tasty Trompo Tacos.... Picked up a half dozen tacos on the way home for only 10 dollars. I ordered 3 beef fajita tacos and three trompo tacos. I ordered mine on the double corn tortilla with cilantro and onion. You can get flour tortillas if you prefer, but I think the corn goes better with this style of taco. They also give you a green and a red sauce. It's nothing like a taco bell sauce packet. The sauces here really have a nice spicy flavor. If your not familiar with trompo, its pork that is cooked on a vertical rotating spit similar to a gyro. The trompo here is great, very tender and flavorful. The last time that I had trompo this good and authentic was off the streets in Nogales. Be sure to squeeze some of the fresh lime over to taco, the citrus really compliments the pork. I probably wouldn't get the beef fajitas tacos again. Unfortunately the beef was dry, tough and overcooked. The flavor wasn't bad though. Customer service was great and everyone was friendly. While waiting for my to go order, I noticed that if you dine in they will bring you chips and salsa. The salsa looked great, I could see the steam rising off of it and i am a fan of hot salsa. Guess I will be having my dinner here next time. *** Update *** Ok, I went back less than a week later and dined in. I just couldn't stop thinking about the trompo tacos. I got my fix and they were fantastic! They actually have 4 different salsas. The two they give you to take home are different then the ones they serve at the restaurant. I am a fan of all of them. They are all very authentic and not like the ones you will get at the local tex-mex places. The red table salsa was great, served hot and had a strong tomato flavor but in a good way, its also thinner than what you may be use to. The chunky green salsas will set your taste buds on fire. It has a great flavor, chunks of tuna cactus, cilantro, lime, onion, Serrano or jalapeno, and few other delicious ingredients. I can't decide which one I like better as they are both great! My boyfriend told me about this super bomb taco place that he used to go to with his family, when he told me this was the place, I yelped it and was skeptical but boy was I wrong. We spent our morning researching the menu to figure out what we wanted to get which included sopes and a whole lotta tacos Sopes- must try! It was my first time ever tasting this, but I was pleasantly surprised by the crispy corn crust and all the topping on it Deshebrada- had a bite of my boyfriends taco and thought it was alright, not terrible nor outstanding Cochinita Pbil- shredded pork, we definitely prefer this one to the deshebrada if you're looking for shredded meat as your protein Trompo- my personal fav! It had the perfect mix between meat, fattiness, and flavor. We had gotten this on both the sopes and corn tacos Lengua- usually I love lengua everywhere else, but perhaps on soft tacos, the texture was alittle too soft overall (I love these on crispy tacos) however the meat itself was soft tender and juicy as always Don't forget to make use of the sauces that they provide! They definitely pack and punch and add an extra layer of flavor to whatever you're eating. I personally thought the red sauce was more spicy than the green, but boyfriend thought the opposite. As a transplant from Southern California, 99% of what is labeled Mexican food in Houston is an abomination! This place is exactly the opposite. I'm pretty sure on a rainy day, what you find at the end of the rainbow is a big pot full of tacos from Tacos La Bala. This was also the first place I found sopes on a menu, which I've been missing for nearly 2 years. Food here isn't drenched with the completely unMexican insult to food that is Tex-Mex "queso." Here, they understand that queso actually means cheese, not some nasty nacho sauce concoction - and that if the cheese is yellow, it has no place in Mexican food! Everything is delicious. The only reminder that this was not a California restaurant is that they call their carne asada "beef fajitas." Well...nobody's perfect. Came in today because I was in a rush and this location is closed to where I live, versus the one on beechnut which I usually go to. The lady at the front ignored me for a good 1 minute before she decided to take my order which was awkward. I ordered 3 fajita tacos with grilled onions (my go to). Now I don't know if I haven't noticed this before or if this is new but she charged me 20 cents each per taco just to grill the onions which was dumb. When I finally got home and opened the food I realized they didn't even put the onions on the tacos even though they charged me 60 cents total for literally nothing. The fajita meat was also very dry which isn't the case at all at the beechnut location and the food overall tasted worse here. Great for lunch, not so much for breakfast. I have been here a couple of times for lunch and it has been good in the way that I am promptly helped and time it takes to get food is quick. I've had the milanesa, which was pretty tasty and very filling, as well as the fajita taquitos which tasted delicious and although they seemed pretty small, they filled me up. They reminded me of the tacos I'd get in Mexico from the street (that's a good compliment). I decided to try their breakfast tacos, as I've been looking for some aroudn this area. I was SO disappointed. The egg in the breakfast tacos was too easy for my taste and that grossed me out. I had to toss them. I would have returned them or asked for them to be made again if I had not taken them for take out or had known they were gonna be easy. Besides that, the content inside the taco was rather small. To the Cashier with the glasses. Due to you, I will no longer come back. I originally went to the Tacos La Bala in Houston. I found the company through Uber Eats and fell in Love !!! Not once did she say "I apologize for the mistake , let me fix your order". Instead she insists that we should pay for the 3 flour tacos. Since she clearly lost in the cloud. This is authentic Mexican food, not TexMex. We love little family owned restaurants, this is one of those places. The food was good, simple tacos with cilantro and onions as toppings.
