We spent the day in Estes and decided to walk around Main Street looking for somewhere new to eat when we came across this little Mexican restaurant. The place is definitely small inside, but it had a nice atmosphere and the service was really good from start to finish. For appetizers, we ordered the chips, queso, and salsa. The queso was definitely different from what I'm used to, but it actually wasn't bad at all. I ordered the street tacos -- three carne asada and two chicken -- topped with cilantro and onions, plus an extra al pastor taco because I wanted to try it. Out of all of them, the al pastor was my favorite. The meat was super tender and flavorful. I wasn't a huge fan of the mango on it though; I would've preferred pineapple instead, but I just picked the mango out and still enjoyed it. My husband and I also shared a side of rice and beans. The beans were decent, although a little salty. The rice, unfortunately, was the low point for me. It honestly had almost no flavor and kind of tasted burnt. I definitely wouldn't order the rice again. Overall, the food was decent and the service was great. I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to eat here again, but it was still a solid stop while spending the day in Estes. read more

This is a quaint little place (we loved the decor and the music). We had Chicken Chimichanga & Chicken Tortilla Soup. The food serving is enough for 2 meals (at least in our perspective) -- which was a bonus for leftovers! Flavor of the soup was a little salty, but I can revamp it as my leftover. We came day after V-day...also President's Day weekend. They were not busy, the food came out fairly quickly (no complaints). The services was minimal. Young lady who was nice, but was not attentive to the 5 (including us) guests that were there. We had to ask for another round of water, there was no 2nd attempt to make sure everything tastes ok -- and we had to ask for to-go containers. The service was a little slow and they were out of a few things. Our fajitas came out so hot that hot oil splashed on our clothes and folks left the restaurant from the smoke. The fajitas were absolutely swimming in oil. The nachos were congealed by the time we got them as well. There was a single server running the whole restaurant, so pretty much none of this was on her. Went to Tacos La Tradicion after hiking RMNP! We started with guac and salsa. The guac is made table side! My friends and I got the pork belly, carnitas, birria, and pastor ultimate tacos with a side of rice. The food is fresh, exactly what we needed after hiking. A few of the tacos were a bit dry and were not the most traditional take on birria street tacos. Overall, got the job done but pretty expensive and would look into other places if I come back to Estes. Service was slower but I think it was due to being a smaller restaurant. Bland. The margarita tasted like juice. They charge extra for margarita flavor. If you want grilled chicken they will charge you extra

STAY AWAY! The server (Gael) was just awful. First, he left us waiting to order and then waiting 45 minutes for our food. Then when my husband had to go get our food himself (which had been sitting on a counter while he talked to the two other employees) he got mad. When he brought the food, he stormed off and I asked for a spoon for my soup. Again, we waited and waited for the spoon so I had to go back in for the spoon. When I asked for the spoon he literally said "there is your F**KING spoon"! I was in total shock! I asked for the manager and he said he was the manager. I asked the female server for the manager and she confirmed he was not the manager. He would not come back out to our table so we could pay so the other server gave us a phone number to pay. As we left, we saw him back at the hosts station continuing to stand around and talk. This is a decent spot in a very touristy town. Service was fantastic. They treat you like family. Veggie fajitas were delicious and served with all the fixings. I really liked the vibe of the place, and the service was pretty good. That is where the good ends. Ordered carne asada plate, rice was almost a paste, and the beans were obviously from a can. The carne itself had zero flavor and was a bit chewy despite being medium rare in the middle. There was no evident that it was a true asada which is flank steak marinated in citrus, onions, garlic, jalapeño and spices. I didn't get any of that, just the taste of the flat top grill. The salsas smelled and tasted strange, as if they'd been left too long before making a new batch. The best part of the carne asada was the guacamole they put on the plate. Additionally asada is traditionally served with grilled onions and peppers. The corn tortillas were store bought and crumbly, the flour tortillas were crunchy as if they'd been sitting under a heat lamp for a while. If the dish had been $10 instead of $22, I might not have left this review. Additionally, the paletas (fruit popsicles) fridge only had coconut. Normally, there should be a large variety. What really annoyed me was the mandatory tip. It's such a shame, the kitchen, restaurant and bathrooms were absolutely spotless, vibe was great, but the food really lets the restaurant down in a big way. I don't see them lasting the winter. Please put this place out of its misery and eat at "La Cocina de Mama". *edit* I saw ZERO vegetarian options. Not nice when you advertise it. When asked if we could have our food, Server Gael (who was just standing around talking to his coworkers) got very angry and didn't even apologize for the wait. A member of our party asked for a spoon for her soup and then he went back inside and never retrieved it. Will not give a star rating. I've never written a yelp review in my life, and through all the service I've had this was so bad I have to say something. First of all, I took my child to the bathroom where there was a take out container on the floor, opened, full of rice, and rice spilled all over the ground. (Yes fully cooked rice) secondly, we were halfway through our meal and still didn't have our drinks. I've never experienced waiting for drinks that long into eating. we had to ask three times, and when they brought them it was canned soda, and two waters. Im fine drinking from a can but I could've grabbed it myself.... we were the second table inside. When we left two more were seated so they were not busy when we initially placed our order. I am a Colorado native. My girlfriend and I went to get a bite to eat, she had the quesabirrias and I had a caldo, don't remember the name. The tacos were honestly not very good, they looked weird, dry, and the served it with no queso, the consome was in a tiny cup, and it kinda just tasted like beef broth. Our experience here did not live up to the positive reviews. Other reviews mentioned vegan options, it turns out they changed their menu and quit offering anything like that. We came here specifically for vegetarian options and the server offered no suggestions of anything that could be modified, it was basically take it or leave it. We stopped here because of the fantastic smell and the fun atmosphere. The lady was polite when she took my order and repeated my order back to me. We ordered 2 shrimp tacos, 3 Chorizo tacos, 3 Barbacoa tacos, 3 Pollo tacos and chips and queso to-go. Our total spent was $60. When we arrived at our destination to enjoy our picnic, we were very disappointed to find that our $60 order was incomplete. We were not given the Barbacoa tacos. The queso was reminiscent of middle school basketball game nachos. The queso was clearly from a can and added nothing to our meal. The tacos we did receive were fine, but not great. The shrimp in the shrimp taco tasted like it was from the frozen section of Safeway . I don't expect a taco place in the mountains to have fresh caught shrimp, but I do expect them to flavor and accent the taco to at least hide the pre-frozen taste. The chorizo taco and pollo taco was also "ok" in taste. The chips tasted very good. They were thick and had a slightly mild sweetness.
