I ordered chicken tacos which came with chopped onion, cilantro, cukes with a green sauce on the side. 3 tacos per order. I like soft tacos and they were perfect as was the chicken: moist and tasty. DISASTER - AVOID We rolled in here with a couple of hungry kids in tow on a Sunday just after noon. There were four guys in baseball caps inside, with just drinks and no food in front of them, but they assured us that the tacos were good. So we got our order in. And thus began our very own off-Broadway production of the classic 20th century nihilistic stage play, "Waiting for Taco". The curtain rises. We sit at our table, the kids getting jitterier by the moment. We order water for the adults, which comes after about ten minutes, and strawberry licuados for the little ones. More time passes. No drinks for the kids. So I get up to ask the lone server/cashier/expediter about the liquid sustenance for my only progeny. Turns out they don't have the ingredients for the strawberry licuados. Glad I asked. Water for the kids, too, please. More time passes. We are now about forty minutes in, and the Mexican television blaring overhead has introduced us to the leading talents of several World Cup squads, as well as the players with whom the female commentators would most enjoy a non-sporting liaison. We have also learned about the upcoming performances of various singing cowboys. We have visited the restroom, which exists simultaneously in the quantum states of dirty and clean, depending on the angle of your gaze and the flickering of the fluorescent light. The four gentlemen who preceded us have received their food. One has even finished his meal, paid, and left. Two more people have come in, ostensibly to place takeout orders. Both have waited at least fifteen minutes before receiving their orders, paying, and leaving. We are alone in our hunger. More time passes. At this point you may be wondering what we ordered. What, in a place called Tacos Marianita, could possibly take so long? We are wondering the same thing. The first part of our order, guacamole with chips, finally appears. Apparently there is no salt in the kitchen - meaning zero, not a single grain in the pasty green melange or the crispy golden quarter-circles. The kids, having by now gone through five out of the Twelve Stages of Hunger (anticipation, hyperactivity, irritation, anger, and desperation) devour it anyway. But it is by no means a huge portion, at least not the sort of portion you'd expect for the $12 price tag. So they are still ravenous. More time passes. We are just short of an hour now. I ask the solitary visible employee whether the tacos - yes, that's the entirety of our remaining order, tacos - will be ready in the next five minutes. In a sudden frenzy, he pages through a small ream of tickets, tearing some off and leaving others intact. He smiles, as though my request is bordering on the inane, and assures me that our food will be ready. Five minutes later, there are no tacos. The tacos - tacos made from slow-cooked meats that any self-respecting truck operator on the continent of North America could assemble, wrap, and deliver to the waiting hands outside his or her window in half the time - are not there. This place is an incredible hidden gem, and I'm floored that nobody has reviewed it before. I'm an obsessive lover of Mexican food. I once spent a summer working in Guanajuato just so that I could eat tacos, mole, tamales, chilaquiles, and guacamayas every day. During another trip, I almost married a complete stranger in La Paz, just because of her mother's cooking. And I've been trying to talk my (non-Mexican) fiance into moving back to the Southwest, just so we can get good Mexican food again. I've eaten Mexican food at least 200 times in NYC, and it's rarely been great. So then we come up to Haverstraw, just to escape the city for a few days. And guess what? We found the best Mexican food I've eaten in my four years on the east coast. Haverstraw? WTF? Seriously, this place serves the best green salsa I've had since I left California, and the chicken mole was unbelievable. The portions are vulgarly large. The horchata is fresh. The staff is friendly and thoroughly bilingual. And the prices are--at least by NYC standards--incredibly reasonable. If you're anywhere near the Haverstraw-Nyack-Congers area, it's probably worth going a little bit out of your way. Okay this California girl loves her some REAL Mexican food. I think I have tried 7 places claiming to be Mexican food, but they lie. Marianitas is the real deal. Their tacos are amazing. Chicken is real chicken, not shredded, topped with cilantro, onion, and delicious mild salsa verde. Squeeze a bunch of lime on top and you will be craving those babies for the next two weeks (as I am right now). They also have a gigantic portion of flan that is pretty decent. We had ordered 2 steak big burritos and they were awesome. The burritos came with rice and beans, freshly slices avocados, lettuce , and tomatoes. The burrito itself was extremely tasty. My chorizo taco was textured just right, the green hot sauce was just hot enough for my admittedly wimpy tolerance for hot stuff. I washed my meal down with a horchata, which was just sweet and milky enough perfect to balance the spice of my tacos. They brought us warm chips with two different salsas - one mild and one spicy. We also ordered a papaya, pineapple, & strawberry agua fresca. It was also delicious! It was basically a fruit smoothie but it went well with the food. It's a small place. You can either take out or sit & eat. There was only one waitress, but it wasn't busy, so she attended to everyone in a timely fashion. The service was quick and the food wasn't expensive. When we were giving our orders, the waitress answered our questions. She was the one who suggested the smoothie and she was right on the money!
