We are here last night for my sister's birthday. Upon entering the restaurant, we immediately noticed how loud it was. The host wanted to seat us next to an extremely large & loud party so we asked for a different table. He led us to the back room, which was empty. All of the lights were flickering, which we thought was an extremely odd and unprofessional. It gave us all a headache to be completely honest. Large portion of chips & salsa, which was nice. The menus are also on tablets which is kind of cool. It didn't take long before the small room filled up. They sat a young family right next to us (and the tables are pretty close together). This couple gave their young daughter a device so she was watching loud YouTube videos for the duration of our meal. This definitely took away from our meal. The host also turned out to be our waiter. His attention was definitely pulled in many directions and he wasn't as attentive as he should have been to the tables. I ordered the mixed fajitas (chicken, steak, and shrimp). That is my usual whenever I go to Mexican restaurants. Never before have I been to a restaurant where they include green peppers, but this place does. And a lot of them. Yuck! There was also a seasoning that the protein was soaked in that tasted funny. It soaked into the chicken the most. Didn't enjoy my meal. And for the prices they are charging, I should have. Not sure I'll be back. Much happier with other Mexican restaurants. read more

Unbelievably original and delicious. My entree was the steak special of the day . Simply said, this dish showcased the accomplished chefs skills reaching far beyond his native region. Homemade creamed spinach and a layered potato side that rivals the finest gratin Daphinoise that I've ever had the pleasure of savoring. We never had been here but came early Sunday evening for drinks only but had some really good Brussels sprouts and plaintains to go with our margaritas. Also warm chips which was not a full meal but so good too. We really like our sweet bartender Sean ? And the place is so fun and I'm excited to return for dinner one night. So it's early Sunday afternoon and passing by we decide to stop for late lunch We're the only ones and sit outside. Consuela the owner is so nice we begin chatting. The place it seems, is named after the Day of the Dead. We order a delicious glass of cab, it's so smooth and really delightful. For food, my friend orders the coconut shrimp. She says the best she's ever had! Wow My chicken quesadilla is also just wonderful. A bit a spicy but delicious But the BEST part was the dessert. Croton on Hudson has the best and authentic Mexican quinine north of Manhattan. Family owned and operated the food is traditionally made with an accent from Mexico City! My husband and I have been going to La Catrina for years, since it first opened. I was a lovely, family run business with an elegant Dia Del Muerte theme. The food was always good, the service was exceptional. Both are still true. It was a lovely dining experience. We brought friends from all over Westchester. The new ownership and the interior renovations which opened this week have turned this into a visually cacophonous circus like environment, with every inch of wall space and furniture covered with gaudy stereotypical renderings of rural Mexican life. The environment made it difficult to enjoy the food. Even the tables and plates were excessively "decorated" obscuring the beauty of the food. Sometimes, less is more. In short, it was unpleasant. Doubtful we shall return. A very sad loss for us. Staff is lovely, food very good. read more

Question: How long should it take drinks to come once they're ordered? 1) 5 Minutes 2) 10 Minutes 3) 15 Minutes? Answer: They don't come until you get up and ask the waitress to get your drinks AFTER 25 minutes. We were hopeful when we entered La Catrina at about 6:45PM. Brightly decorated with images of happy skeletons and Dia de Muertos (Mexican Day of the Dead) iconography. The place was perhaps less than 3/4 full. It seemed most the patrons were with drinks and food. Very interestting menu service--ipads with food and drink listings instead of menus--"Cool..." I thought. But after the interminable wait for drinks, the happy skeletons started taking on a more ominous tone. The chips were stale and flavorless, the salsa was void of real taste or texture. The wrong drinks came out...one in our party asked for a Martini with a twist of lemon. ..only problem, no lemons. So an orange was supplied. The other martini was only filled to half...about $14 each with a splash of Vodka. We did complain and the Martinis were taken back and returned more fully realized with the assurance we would not be charged for the first ones. After about 20 more minutes we asked for a chips refill and were told that's fine but the refill would be $5...we declined. After 25 minutes the entrees were served...well, sort of...half of our parties entrees were brought to the table...15 minutes later ours arrived. I have to say the food WAS good, despite the lackluster service...we enjoyed that. But after that, the checks (we went dutch) came. Problem #1: They charged for 2 martinis each, when the first ones had been sent back with the assurance we'd only be charged for one. Problem #2: Our two checks were reversed, our party was charged for theirs and their for ours. We showed our server the 2 problems and she said she couldn't do anything, that we'd have to talk to Consuelo, the dour owner, to work it out. We did. At first, Consuelo told us the two drinks would still be charged to each of us and that we were NOT to return to the restaurant. Ok...our server returned with the corrected checks...and the double charges were miraculously gone. Buyer beware...La Catrina is not for the faint of heart. read more

First off don't Uber eats from this place, it takes way too long. I live 12 mins away and it took over 2 hours to arrive. Second, the food itself is not authentic. The flavors are okay but EXTREMELY salty. Portions are tiny. Lastly, prices are outrageous for the portion and meal you get. My first time here was visiting my daughter the quality of the food here is off the chart! The duck tacos were moist and so flavorful! The soup presentation was so elegant and the soup is insanely flavorful! The Caesar salad was served the correct way with whole romaine! And the street corn which i have no words for because that was the best street corn i have ever had! Sooo good. Glad that we decided to go here for dinner. We split everything, guacamole, entree and dessert. The guacamole is spicy, not so hot that either of us had trouble eating it, but definitely a zip there that you normally don't get. I think the tortilla chips are homemade and they are good but not great. We split the Molcajete Bowl and while delicious, it's a bit expensive at $58. The sauce at the bottom was excellent but we didn't know it was there until we had taken enough stuff off the top of the bowl. Mini ice cream cones for dessert really topped off the meal. Not impressed... the ambience has little relationship to their prices. The back room has not been changed in years. The front room is just okay. This restaurant thinks it is a stellar Mexican restaurant, but it is totally mediocre. The quesadillas were ordinary, the cheese rubbery, the presentation unattractive. The salmon was fine... just fine... probably frozen... the vegetables underneath were unrecognizable. The margaritas were served in an unattractive tumbler. And don't ask for more sour cream.... You will be charged a dollar. And in a time when people like to sit outdoors, there are only metal chairs and tables on their area in front of the restaurant.... Altogether, an uninspiring experience. Go to Yukas on 9A in Cortlandt for sophisticated South American fare. Or go to Rosaritas also on 9A in Cortlandt for Mexican food that is authentic and whose prices are not insane! read more

I recently had the carne asada rice bowl from La Catrina and was greatly displeased with the experience. I order through take out and when I opened the container the food looked like had been thrown together into the box with little care and was frankly unappetizing. On top of that the portions seemed sparse for the 22 dollar price tag. The real kicker of this experience though was the beef, it was incredibly salty to the extent where it hurt my mouth and ruined the meat. read more

I'm sorry to report that my latest visit culminated in terrible digestive distress afterward. That combined with a 3% "convenience charge" for using my credit card, which I'm given to understand is becoming increasingly common, did not make for a great experience. I understand inflation, but the reality is that the prices at many restaurants, including La Catrina, are quite expensive. You mean to tell me that in addition to $14 for a dessert and $18 for an appetizer, not to mention entries that are in some cases over $30 each, that they have to nab me for more money simply for using the most common form of payment in the world? Here's a little tip for all such restaurants: this will not endear you to your customers. Don't make me pay a fee in order to pay you for my meal. Build it into your prices. At least that way, it's more honest. I think that I'll avoid restaurants even more than I have been doing since the pandemic. This time around made me sick both figuratively and literally. read more

One of my new favorite places in Croton and my GFs hands down favorite. The decor is certainly worthy of the name. If you like purple and skulls, they have got you covered. This traditional Dia De Los Muertos aesthetic permeates the place and I love it. I've eaten here many times and never had a bad dish but if I have to recommend one, it would be the duck tacos. These duck tacos in wonton shells with guac are genius. If you have more than 2 people at your table, order extra because they will disappear fast. If fusion isn't your thing feel free to pick any of the more traditional items, none disappoint. Good for a casual and fun date night, La Catrina is always a good choice. read more

Came here with the family before an event in Ossining. This is not your run of the mill Mexican restaurant and is a lovely surprise. Fun decor. Menu with items for everyone in our party. The salmon tartare was fresh and the mango added a bright flavor. The presentation of the soup is FABULOUS! I'd order soup again just for this. The duck tacos were a fresh twist on confit. Was looking forward to a burger here as was one of the restaurants in Westchester Magazine touted as having a great burger. Restaurant was pretty much empty but it was a Monday. It was so cold in the restaurant that everyone was wearing a coat and eating. That was very uncomfortable. But the real disappointment was the burger. It was awful.
