No frills, no flashy atmosphere -- just comida auténtica and seriously satisfying flavors. I ordered the carne asada nachos and an order of tacos al pastor, and both hit the spot perfectly. Fresh ingredients, bold flavor, and that classic street-style taco taste that instantly lifts your ánimo on a gloomy day. And yes... we washed it all down with a Coke Zero in a glass bottle because somehow it siempre tastes better that way. This is the most authentic Mexican food in this area. Since I've moved back from California this is the only place that I go to for Mexican. I usually get the tacos al pastor. I come specifically for them and they never miss. They are delicious. The store itself is an authentic tienda as well. You can get many treats that are authentic Mexican. Upon entering, it feels like you're in a local mom & pop shop in Mexico. The decor and tables are vibrant and colorful. Not only do they sell hot food but items you'd find in a Mexican supermarket as well. The complimentary Chips & Salsa were super tasty; the chips were warm & crisp and the salsa was fresh & mild. The tacos are massive and loaded with toppings! The Carne Asada Tacos were savory, smoky, and flavorful. The toppings provided some freshness and balance to each bite. The Fish Tacos were a good try but less enjoyable. Although the fish was fried perfectly, it was unseasoned; a little salt & pepper would have went a long way. There was also way too much lettuce that masked the fish and the tomatoes were a bit unnecessary too. I loved the orange sauce it came with however! After seeing and hearing so much rave about this place, I knew it was time to see what the hype was all about and I'm so glad we came to El Cuñao. While staying around Nyack I knew we had to stop here as part of our little food tour and exploration around town. After a cold day of walking around and wanting some chill and relax time, we decided to pick up some take out from them to eat at the hotel we were staying at. It was the PERFECT comfort food we needed on a cold day while we watched tv, hung out and relaxed in our room. It was basically that room servicefeeling feel but better haha because the food was INCREDIBLE and fully homemade. When you walk into this little unassuming hotspot, you know someone's tia, abuela or mom is making some magic in the kitchen. It's got such a cozy vibe and just feels like you walked into someone's house and they're ready to serve up something delicious and homemade. We ordered some soles and huarache with a delicious Jamaica (hibiscus) agua fresca. Everything was WOW but what truly wowed me was that the huarache was stuffed with black beans. It was incredibly delicious! What left us dreaming (til this very moment) is their delicious smokey spicy red sauce that is absolutely out of this world. I've never been to Oaxaca but it made me feel like I did - those flavors took me on an unforgettable taste bud journey that made all of the ingredients pop. Bottom line: yes, GO HERE. My wife said that she was in the mood for pozole. We needed to grab it before the snow started. We headed to the restaurant and were able to find a convenient parking spot. (Not always easy in the area) The gentleman working behind the counter is polite and professional. There's a few tables and it seems like a nice place to sit. In addition to the pozole, we added a red tamale, green tamale, guacamole and chips, and maduros to our order. We took the food to go, as we wanted to eat it a little later in the afternoon. Food was packed very well. They also gave us a great amount of accompaniments to the pozole. (Onions, radish, limes, avocado, tortillas with bean, lettuce, and cheese, and some salsa) The pozole was outstanding! Broth is rich and flavorful, a bit of the red sauce kicks it up just right. Great pieces of pork and the hominy itself is tender. Hominy can make or break a pozole and this was very good. Tamales were excellent, liked the "green" one slightly more. The guacamole and chips were so fresh and vibrant! Maduros are delicious and plentiful. Great amount of delicious food for a good price! read more

I came in today on my lunch break and ordered the carne Asada tacos along with some French fries. Let me tell you that was the most saltiest taco I've ever tasted. I barely finished 1 taco. Proceeded to let the manager know. He told me he'd "speak to them". No accommodation. I couldn't even get my tacos replaced. Mind you I barely touched my plate. Went back to El Cuñao after a long hiatus (I've been in a no-taco funk ever since coming back from Southern California). We decided to branch out and order something off the specials board. We went with chiles rellenos which is a favorite of mine. My husband ordered the same. What came out of the kitchen was a big hot mess. So here's something I want to acknowledge: I know Mexico is a very large country and the cuisine can be very regional. Not every dish is the same everywhere. But the version of the dish we got was basically inedible. I have added a picture but will describe. It was, I think, three chiles, but it was hard to tell because it was a big heap of mess. The chiles has been battered, which I am used to, but then they were doused with a watery and tasteless tomato sauce. All this did was to make the batter soggy and spongy with an awful texture. The chiles were stuffed with cheese but the cheese was hard, cold and rubbery. Not melted at all. My husband ate all of his because he was hungry and it was Easter and everything else was closed. I managed to eat 1/3 of the dish because I too was very hungry. But as I said above, it was basically inedible. It may be a while before I return to give the tacos another chance and I may update the review. But for now, I can't recommend venturing away from the tacos. read more

We love hole in the wall, mom and pop places. This place did not disappoint. Decor was apparently very authentic. But, we're here for the food, of course. We ordered 4 different kinds of tacos and their special churros. The tacos were all delicious. Probably the best Mexican we've had in a long time. The tastiest was the lengua (beef tongue). It was tender and juicy, and really tasty. The churros were the best we've had. It was filled with something like dolce de leche. Came out hot with a melted center. The meal also came with free chips and salsa. Chips were fresh and crispy. The salsa was milder than usual, but not bad. They also had a small selection of Mexican beers. The whole meal, with 2 drinks came out to $32. Awesome! We left a nice tip. My only complaint was the small service charge of $1.50 that they left on the receipt. That was unexpected and I didn't notice when I paid and left a tip. Not a big deal since the whole meal was so good and cheap. But, it was still not something I expected, especially for a party of 2, and we had to order at the counter. Just strange. Looking forward to coming back and trying more of the menu. read more

We love Mexican food, but there are literally no decent Mexican restaurants where we live, unless you are into the Americanized crappy version, so we decided to drive up to Nyack, NY, where you have a rich, vibrant Hispanic community. Quick search on yelp led us to this 5-star destination, and it was well worth the drive for this gem from Owner/Executive chef Guilermo Zayas, who hails from Tlapa, Mexico. If you're looking for wonderful, authentic Mexican cuisine made from scratch, no need to look further. All the dishes, i.e. soft tacos, fajita, burrito, sandwiches, we ordered for takeout were delicious. Don't forget to order the wonderful home-made churroz. Highly recommend. Mexican food in a bodega in Nyack. Doesn't seem like the obvious lunch spot, but this place is awesome! The tortas are bigger than your head, the bread is fluffy, and they are delicious! First of all, thanks to my sis-in-law and brother for introducing me to El Cuñao. It's an unassuming deli with some the most delicious and wallet friendly tacos. El Cuñao easily falls into the top 3 category of best tacos I've eaten (San Diego and Arizona joints). I ordered el pastor, lengua and carnitas tacos. Now, I can't tell you which is which in the photos but I can say that all of them were bomb. Flavorful , tender chunks of meat (some pieces were a little crispy - yum!). I was full after three (they go heavy on the meat) but because they were THAT GOOD I ate the fourth, followed by a fresh dulce de leche churro. The best churro I've eaten. Despite being filled with even more sweets in the center, the churro wasn't overly sweet and was a perfect accompaniment to the savory tacos. Each order comes with three so be prepared to share (or not). There are 3 or 4 tables for dine-in but appears most patrons do takeout. If you plan on taking your food to a park to eat, remember to bring wet naps cause you will get dirty. It's probably a good thing for me that this joint is on the other side of the Tappen Zee (not the Cuomo bridge!)...I would stop by way too often :) read more
