Huge portions, delicious flavors, and such a variety! My colleagues wanted to grab dinner and we chose to go to Tai Pei in Fox Chapel. The outside and is beautiful and well maintained (bonus - the side parking lot is the way to go for ease!) The interior is stunning with vaulted ceilings and elegant decor. It is awesome to see a restaurant take pride in their building! The food also matches everything else! A menu comparable to The Cheesecake Factory with Japanese, Chinese, and even Taiwanese options! After the crispy wontons with duck sauce, I ordered the: - Chicken Egg Roll - fully packed with chicken and veggies, they didn't drip with grease and were perfectly crisp. I might stop by just to grab an egg roll somedays - Tempura Shrimp Roll - my go-to for sushi and they make it great!! - Spider Roll - soft shell crab that might end up cracking into my repertoire of sushi - Hawaiian Chicken - with the table fanfare of a sizzling plate, the breaded chicken is different than most Asian dishes with more of a panko crust, the pineapple and pepper are so tender and flavor, and a sauce that has so much sweetness and a little spice!! This was a great little Chinese / Taiwanese place that popped up in Yelp when I was in Fox Chapel. The interior and decor are reminiscent of old school Chinese restaurants from my childhood, which I love. The food was nice - spring roll was very crispy, the crunchy noodle and sauce were tasty (like how they fill you up with chips and salsa at a Mexican restaurant), and really liked the main dish too. Everything in it was cooked well and had good flavor ( my dish was heavy on the umami taste side due to the mushroom/tofu combo). Service was friendly and fast - they did forget my hot tea I ordered, but I let it go, and otherwise, no problems. It is the best Chinese food in the area my husband who would never eaten there before said that he thinks this is the best sushi he's had his life as well. It's a simple place in Fox Chapel and I don't think the decor is changed in 30 years but I like that about it. When everything else seem to change this place stays consistently delicious. Tonight I tried something new and had the Peking Duk. It was absolutely perfect.. crispy skin and tender meat, I loved the plum sauce that came with it! This was one of my go to restaurants when I worked in the area over 15 years ago. Everything was always so good. Great service, very flavorful food, and beautiful interior. There always seemed to be a wait for lunch. This past week I was in the area so I decided to stop for lunch. I was really looking forward to one of my favorites, chicken with garlic sauce. The waiter came over and stood beside my table. I'm not sure if he asked what I wanted or if he was just so soft spoken I didn't hear him ask. Turns out he is very soft spoken. I placed my order and began looking at my phone. Almost immediately he brought my egg roll. I cut it in half since they are always so hot. This one wasn't hot, just warm. After my first bite I knew this wasn't the egg roll I remember. Aside from it being only warm, it was very dry, and didn't have much taste. My guess is that they cook these ahead and let them sit under a heat lamp or something. I cut it into pieces and spooned duck sauce all over it so it wasn't dry. These taste like they might buy them frozen. Shortly after my chicken with garlic sauce arrived with fried rice. I had ordered steamed rice but it was fine. Or I thought it was. The rice was also dry and tasteless. My guess is that it was left over from the previous night. Again, I added some duck sauce to give it flavor. The garlic chicken was mediocre at best. Aside from the food, I always remembered this place to have a really authentic decor. While it still has the same look, it looks old and drab. It doesn't appear they have done anything to update or freshen it up. The cash register station beside the door and the tables behind it look like junk tables. Everything that an employee brings finds its way there. It's really a mess, making it look as though no one cares about how the restaurant looks. My lunch was $24 with tip. In my opinion, definitely not worth it. If you're in the area and have a craving for Chinese food, I would bypass Tai Pei, drive the road behind it until you run into Jimmy Wann's. The look is beautiful. Very clean. Everyone is professional and friendly and the food is exceptional. read more

Our sushi order of Lobster Combo and Fire Cracker Roll (which was the daily sushi special) was good. The Kung Pao Chicken (with egg roll) was requested to be extra spicy, but it wasn't, so my husband was disappointed. Michael was our Server, and I know he has been there for years, but his attentiveness was sorely lacking today. The ambiance is mediocre. You can see tears in the vinyl seating and the dark ceiling covers other flaws. The bathrooms were remodeled years ago and are much improved. I find it a "caution" that staff are peeling vegetables or snapping beans at a table outside the kitchen. The restaurant has done this for years. It wouldn't appear to be a cleanly practice with people having to pass this table on the way to the bathroom or additional seating. read more

The sushi here is incredibly fresh and super delicious. First of all it's a lot bigger inside than it looks from the outside and tables/booths are comfortably spaced so you don't feel crowded. The staff (from the host to Joe, our server, as well as the busboy) were all very friendly and our water glasses were never empty. We arrived with 25 minutes left on the lunch specials which included a variety of sushi and Chinese dishes so we ordered the shrimp and scallop in Hunan sauce Chinese lunch special which included your choice of steamed or fried rice, an egg roll, and one of 3 soups (hot and sour, wonton and egg drop). We also got a 2 roll sushi lunch special served with a miso soup. It was a great deal for all the food we got. I probably would not get the egg drop soup again - it had a strange 'corny' taste to it and lo and behold I discovered corn at the bottom of the bowl! First time I had it like that and was not my favorite. Everything else we had was very good. I know all the sushi purists don't think Philadelphia rolls are sushi but I am a sucker for anything with cream cheese in it so for the 2 roll sushi special we opted for the Philadelphia rolls and the spicy tuna rolls. Sometimes rolls have too much rice and not enough fish in the pieces but these were perfect! The spicy tuna rolls had the right amount of spice to make it flavorful and packed a spicy punch. They also happened to have fresh uni that they just got in so we had to order. I never had it served with a perfectly ripened slice of avocado underneath and wow did it blow me away. The combo of the creamy avocado and the earthy creamy taste of the uni were so perfect together I'd drive all this way just for another bite of this. They probably deserve 5 stars as their one of the best around, but I remember Anna Kao's that was nearby, and they could not match her food but in fairness no one could. I let them know this was my first time at the restaurant and asked for a recommendation for my vegan lifestyle. They recommended a Taiwanese dish. I ordered it & paid and then found out they had just sold the last order. So, I ordered General Tso Tofu which should have been pretty standard. This is without a doubt the worst General Tso's Tofu I've ever had. It is just huge chunks of barely fried Tofu with an extreme amount of sauce. Not one vegetable in the dish at all. We love Tai Pei and eat there at least once every couple of months. They accept reservations but you can generally walk in and be seated without having to wait too long. I do not eat sushi, but my husband and friends do and they almost always order a sushi boat. They make the sushi right in front of you at the bar and the boat is very impressive. We always get an order of lo mein as well as the general tso chicken and some soup. Everything is very fresh tasty, and the service is excellent. We splashed out on Peking Duck at $23. It... wasn't that great. Some bites were greasy, some of the duck was tooth-crackingly hard. We got the tempura squid too. It was soggy and floppy. I'm sure this one would be better fresh out of the kitchen rather than a takeout item. Perhaps it isn't fair to judge a restaurant during the Pandemic - I will give them another try in a few months. I came here for take out. I've always wanted to try their food. I got their turnip cake and spicy tuna sushi. The price in my opinion is a little high. The turnip cake was really good, I haven't have these in a long time, and I'll say I was pretty satisfied :) the spicy tuna roll was good too but it's not outstanding and I think both of these items can be cheaper. I paid about $12 total and I thought they're not worth this much. However, it was my first time here and I only got snacks (in my opinion these were snacks lol) so I will definitely return to this place for an actual meal. We have long been searching for a good Chinese restaurant that does not use MSG. Tai Pei definitely fits the bill! Everything they make is from scratch with fresh ingredients. The food is not only tasty but it doesn't leave that filmy feeling in your mouth that usually accompanies Chinese takeout. We first tried this place as dine in before the lockdown and loved it so we decided to get takeout a couple weeks ago. It was super easy to order online and they have a great no contact pick up system. The only issue was they mixed up our order so by the time we got home, we realized we had all the wrong food. The great thing - I called to let them know and they fully comped our meal by giving us a full credit on our next order! We took advantage of it the following weekend and am happy to say the meal was perfect! That was a TRUE representation of how a business works to ensure their customers are happy! This will make for the second time I have eaten here in my life time and I was very much not impressed. The eggplant with garlic sauce was o.k., but the sauce is too heavy and sweet. My lady had the General Tso's Tofu. I don't even know why they named it this because it tastes nothing like any General Tso's I have ever eaten. It should have a coating on it with the sauce, but it is just drenched in another very sweet sauce. The tofu was too crunchy and tough. It tasted like an old tire that has just driven 500,000 miles. It was some seriously bad tofu and they didn't include anything else in the dish, no vegetables at all. I have no idea why it is so over priced, it's not even good quality. Our favorite Chinese restaurant in the area. We get delivery almost every Thursday. The food is great, delivery is quick, and the prices are reasonable. My fiance loves the beef and broccoli and I usually go for shrimp fried rice or lo mein (+ egg drop soup is awesome - it's the kind that has corn in it!). Sushi is also very good. You know the food is good because every dish tastes different - unlike some Chinese restaurants where almost every dish just tastes like a variation of the same thing. I have been a regular customer and defender of Tai Pei restaurant (against the Jimmy Wan's converts- though I also enjoy Jimmy Wan's). Unfortunately, I must agree with Danielle P that the past few years I've seen a slow but substantial decline in quality. There always seems to be multiple managers on duty, which makes me wonder how there is such a lapse in quality control. Selection: They have the usual American-Chinese restaurant fare plus sushi. It's a slightly more diverse selection with entrees like Chilean Sea Bass and daily specials. Ordering: For the first time today, I used GrubHub to place my delivery lunch order online. I enjoyed this convenience. In the past, phone orders have also been pleasant and we've never had an order mix-up. Delivery: Delivery times are consistently speedy. They always beat their estimate. Delivery drivers are friendly and bring the food in to our front desk instead of waiting inthe lot for us to come out as some drivers do. Food: This is where the trouble starts. In general, the food has become much too greasy. Writing this 20 minutes after eating I can still feel the grease on my lips and there is a little oil on my keyboard, I confess! The Wonton soup is dark brown and way too salty (and I'm a salt addict) with nothing but broth and 2 wontons that are obviously not made in house. Today I had the shredded pork with garlic sauce (lunch portion). It was a disaster. Besides the heavy oil content, it was also bland despite it being a 'spicy' offering. The worst part was the ratio of meat to water chestnuts. Probably 30% meat to 70% water chestnuts. Not kidding. maybe even 80/20. I am uploading a photo as proof. This is clearly a way to cut back on the amount of meat that they give you and I feel completely ripped off. read more

Really, really tasty food here. We like to try out new places all the time, but had never been here before - we have tried "the competition" nearby, and liked it a lot. Today, we wanted to see why this restaurant always looks like it's packed. Now we know. The service was impeccable, and we thought the restaurant was spotlessly clean. The food was spot on - from the shumai (tastes like it's made from scratch) to the Taipei Special Dumplings (which have a tasty thin exterior and a rich, savory pork filling), we enjoyed our appetizers very much. The main dishes were equally as nice - we had the crispy shrimp and broccoli (lightly battered crispy shrimp and a great sweet chili garlic sauce) and at our waiter's suggestion, the basil rice noodles with chicken. I must say that the basil rice noodle dish was the best of the day; flavorful thin chicken slices with fresh basil tossed in with the delicious noodles and a little bit of sauce. The dish just works... Like other Chinese restaurants, the portions are large, and we probably should have only ordered one entree for the two of us after enjoying the two appetizers. Food was served at the correct temperature, too, which is something I always look for. (I hate it when food is too hot or too cold when it is served!) There is room for improvement with regards to the actual menu - it's too big, and has too many items on too many pages, making it a bit difficult to make up ones' mind, but this is hardly unique to Taipei, and I would say 99% of Chinese restaurants have this problem... I've referred many friends and family to Taipei, who have thanked me because they now love it! I get a variety of food, depending on my mood. It is almost always sushi! Spicy Crunchy Tuna roll and a Philadelphia roll. If I have a meal deal of sorts, I will get a 3rd roll. I have never once (as I said) been disappointed. Their sushi is always fresh - and honestly the best sushi I have had in Pittsburgh. They always know my name - when I walk in it's "Hi Jessica" - whether i am eating there or getting take out.
