After inquiring about hours of operation we sadly received a rude answer saying that they were closed without much interest. This place was okay. I came here with my family (party of 5 adults) and there was a private event going on- now don't ask me why it was in the main portion of the restaurant and not in the separate room off to the left, but maybe there was a good reason?) We were seated promptly, and the seats appeared fine, until about 10 minutes in, when the sun had begun to go down, and it was literally BLINDING my father in law and me as we sat facing the window. There was nothing they could have done- there were no other available seats due to the large party, and no blinds on the window?! So odd. We ordered the nachos as an appetizer, which come with only cheese, salsa and sour cream- so for 11$, we were expecting a big portion- well, we were disappointed. It was a meager portion of literally chips with cheese melted on them. I got a burger which I thought was pretty good. My husband liked the chicken sandwich as well, and my mother in law got the veggie wrap, which she liked. It was all okay- I probably wouldn't go back. read more

I must admit, I did not make it through the cocktail service to actually order solid food. So my review is very limited. Arriving fairly early on a weeknight, I grabbed a barstool, ordered the standard martini (up, olives, had to ask for vermouth to be included after the drink was shaken without it) and opened a menu. One bartendress was serving the few patrons at the bar and the cook was bantering with her and a waitress from the kitchen. First impression, less than a classy operation when the cook is trading quips through the service window. But, what the hey. Cook yelling out into the dining area kind of matches the atmosphere. Too-loud lighting, DIY decor, just an awkward looking interior and vaguely unsettling environment. I finished the less than icy martini right away so when asked I said sure, I'll have another. I continue pondering the regulation pub fare on the menu. To my surprise, as the bartendress takes my glass from the bar, she says to a young woman seated near me sipping a frozen chocolate something-or-other, "Do you want to learn how to make one of these?" Young woman says, "I guess now's as good a time as any." To my amazement, the young woman arises, walks behind the bar and the bartendress begins explaining what ingredients and hardware she'll need to make a martini. Not saying anything, I looked on with a measure of surprise. Bartendress says to me, "She's starting next week so she's in training." Right. So how about we start "training" with wash your hands first, which the trainee hasn't done. Next, how about dictating that you never never ever pour a second cocktail in the same glass? But no. They take my glass from the bar, discard the contents and put the warm stemware down where it will soon receive a second pour. In my world, I've only seen this at the VFW in Farmington and maybe in a West Virginia bowling alley bar once but never in any place that even pretends to be a respectable joint. Amazing.... Oh, and while we're "training" the new employee in bar service, how about we correct her when she fails to handle the glass, shaker and utensils without touching the surfaces that contact the product? And, maybe observe for her to absolutely not dip ice out of the well with the already used glass and then pick up a stray cube from the well tray with your fingers and plop it into the shaker? I could actually go on with more nitty gritty of the martini from Hades, but why waste your time? Call me picky. Maybe even nitpickity. But, really? A bar patron gets up and mixes my cocktail with dirty hands in a dirty glass? Fuggit about it. Bottom line. I paid for the two cocktails, which amounted to something like $24 by the way, left the second drink on the counter and made a mental note on the way out while cheerily bidding the bartendress good luck. Mental note went something like, "First time, last time. You've got to be kidding me. Maybe I was on candid camera." But, they were serious in there. And that's no kidding.... read more

Ok it's really good. If you're looking for a great pub that recognizes you the second time you walk in this is your new place. So much better than other pretentious Exeter /Stratham locations. Food is cooked to order and nicely presented. The beer and cocktails are perfect for a lunch or dinner. If you have read my reviews I don't give my stamp of approval to just any place. Atmosphere is nice, bar and TV's are nice. Service is down right pathetic, very slow and inattentive. Food is mediocre at best. Had the steak tips, they were very bland nothing special, had mac n cheese and broccoli as sides. Mac n cheese was literally worst I ever had flavorless and very watery. Broccoli was undercooked. Wife had short rib mac n cheese. Rib was way over cooked and mush, with same watery bland mac n cheese. With the recent influx of restaurants in Exeter/Stratham area there is going to be some places that don't make it due to the saturation of places in the area. I believe this will be one that does not make it. Maybe as a place to grab a beer and watch a game, this would be an ok choice, but as a restaurant choice steer clear. This place is the go to for when we are hungry, the buff mac is amazing and the black bean burger is the best around.

Food was really good. Had the Gibbs Ribs and my wife had Short Rib w/ MAC-n-Cheese. Ribs were excellent and hot and my wife liked her's too. I think the Mac-n-cheese is one of their specialities. Funny saying it, but its really tasty. Ribs had a tangy sauce on it and they were cooked to perfection (no fat, lots of meat). I finished the full rack but I'm a big eater anyway. The sides were Mac-n-cheese (there I go again) and mashed potatoes. Service was also good. Apps were 1/2 off but we passed on it. Glad we did because the main meal was enough. I also liked the decor, even though it's a strip mall location. Now I know why it's called Tailgates. There's 2 things to fix: 1. Get a few extra shades for your windows. I was blinded by the low sun. 2. Wet naps for the ribs, or maybe a wet hot towel might be a nice touch. read more

Wonderful to have a new place in town. Seems as if some kinks still need to worked out. We heard they have a new chef already which may be a good thing. Food has been subpar. We are routing for their success though! It's been awhile and can't say we're "feeling it". Please, please, please serve beer in cold, icy glasses. Nearby restaurants know how to do it. The French dip tonight was served with COLD roast beef. Really? The au ju was onion soup. All I can say is, we're frustrated with their ability to serve good, consistent food. read more

We went on a weeknight around 8 pm. The bar was pretty empty and the dining area was probably half full and most were finishing up. Our server was very nice and attentive but the menu was disappointing. I know it's a sports bar but I was expecting a little more creativity (ex: a special sauce or a pickled veggie with a burger; nothing crazy!) Your young food expediter is seen counting cash with his bare hands, then immediately served food to patrons. Then he starts eating his own meal with the same unwashed hands and served patrons again following this. It's no wonder no one hasn't gotten sick there yet (or maybe they have). Your chef who was behind the counter watched this and said/did nothing. I was having a beer there with a friend and watched the whole experience. Big no-no in the food industry. Visiting the tavern once with a relative. The tavern is located in a small strip mall across from Planet Fitness to the left of the tavern. Exercise then eat ;) The service was good and the place wasn't full. It can get loud when people start coming in. The place served typical bar food and prices were reasonable somewhat ~$10-15. The bar area had a decent selection of drinks and some beer available. The food items came out fine and tasted well, wasn't overcooked as some other places nearby. Would visit again. read more

We went there recently for the first time. I loved the atmosphere as soon as I walked in. Everyone was super nice. There was country music playing and it was not too loud, it was just right. Then the food came, it was so good! So good that we went again 2 days later and tried more things from the menu. The chicken tenders and wings are so so good. (I recommend the garlic parm). We love the Tailgate Tavern. Have eaten here 3 times now. Food is yummy. Service is friendly and fast. Love the wings, quesadilla, mac n cheese, chili, burgers, ceasar salad. My husband tried the open-faced meatloaf sandwich special last time (Huge!) and loved it, though it probably did not need to be served on so much bread with French Fries. He could barely finish the meatloaf! Great place! Great food! Great staff! read more

We have been to Tailgate at least 10 times and loved it. Yes they have had to work out the kinks but it keeps getting smoother! Great beer selection, great burgers, awesome appetizers ( esp. the cauliflower, the stuffed tomatoes, and the chicken tenders), and salads are cold and crunchy. The staff has always been upbeat and attentive. I hope the folks who gave the tavern a poor review will give it some time and go back for another try. Stratham really needed this! read more

This 4 rating is temporary and I full expect it to be a 5 soon. Any restaurant needs time to work out the kinks and they are doing just that. Food is delicious and not just the usual tavern fare. Hello folks. My opinion of this establishment is as follows. While their food is good, the order online is lacking. Ordered 2 sandwiches and a salad for pickup on Friday. Not a tall order in my opinion. I was informed the it would be ready in an hour. An hour to get 2 sandwiches and a salad? Okay I excepted those terms. Picked up my order in a bag, went home and found that one of the sandwiches was missing. Went back down and I can only imagine the manager going to the cook and showing them the (2) next to the order. She offered to have them make it for me then. I asked if it would be another hour. I thought that maybe since I had to drive back there she might have suggested something off of the bill for my inconvenience or "would you care for a cocktail while you wait for your order"or "here's a coupon for your next purchase". Nothing. She just expected me to continue to wait for a sandwich. My response was " just give me a credit for the purchase so I can get out of here and go to MacDonalds. It had been 1 1/2 hrs since I had ordered my dinner. So that said in these times when restaurants are trying to entice customers to come out to eat, this local Stratham resident will not be returning. Done with the Tailgate Tavern. read more

I've now been to Tailgate 6 or 7 times. As expected, there was an early learning curve, and we experienced a few very minor glitches, but everything has smoothed out nicely. The menu has a very appealing variety. The food arrives fresh, and the wait staff are cheerful and attentive. Also great sports bar and surrounded by high resolution tv monitors. This place opened with a big success, but my experience there tonight was truly a disappointment. The waitress we had was great, but the general manager was not customer oriented in any way. Had there infamous short rib and Mac and started to pull apart the short rib to the experience of the National Lampoon Turkey! It was hard and dry enough to make me cough and the General manager stated that was normal. I will tell you, many visits since their opening have proven him wrong. If you want a great meal there go on a slow day, don't think they are ready for high traffic yet, especially the General manager who had no respect for the customer. Don't give up on this place, there is potential for a great dining experience but not yet. read more

Went there tonight to try someplace new, I hadn't heard about it and kind of stumbled across it. They have 12 beers on tap, a nice selection of regional standards and microbrews. I was in the mood for a burger and ordered the Cowboy, a patty with lettuce, tomato, an onion ring and BBQ sauce. What I appreciated most was the beef patty was fresh, not a pre-frozen thing. Fresh ground beef makes all the difference. The bun was fresh and toasted and all the produce was fresh as well. The place was hopping so clearly other people were as satisfied as I. It's obvious that it's a new restaurant, the setup behind the bar isn't a polished as some places, there's no cooler to hold the beer glasses so don't expect a chilled glass. But right now that's small potatoes, the stuff they're doing right is the big stuff, I expect they'll button down the little things in time. read more
