Taipei 101 is a popular Taiwanese restaurant in Cary! It has a homey feel inside, like it is a family restaurant. I went for dinner on a Saturday and it was packed so expect a slight wait at peak hours. Parking can also be tight as it is located downtown. We were seated quickly and our food came out FAST! Great service. My friend and I shared the Scallion Pancake, Bang Bang Shrimp, Dry-Sautéed Green Beans, and Spicy Crispy Fish. We definitely got one too many dishes, but I am glad we got to try them. The Scallion Pancake was solid. It had the right amount of thinness and flakiness. I would love to taste more scallion next time, though. I think that the sauce that it came with was a bit sweet and I would rather a more savory or saltier sauce to pair with the pancake. The Bang Bang Shrimp was under the appetizer category but it looked like an entree. Lots of small shrimp in a creamy, sweet, and spicy chili sauce. I loved it! The Dry-Sauteed Green Beans were probably my least favorite dish. I wish it had a taste (or more of a taste) of soy sauce or garlic, but it was still decent. The Crispy Spicy Fish is definitely one of the most popular dishes here and it lived it up to the hype! Not sure what seasonings were on the fish, but it tasted a bit salty, spicy, and savory. I like how people talk about decent Chinese food like they talk about bees -- "where did they all go?" If I am anywhere near Cary I will go to this place for the Sichuan dishes. Often times I find that the little red pepper on many Chinese menus mean nothing. Here, they mean "this is going to be really spicy!" I have been told that you ask for something that isn't on the menu, they can often gladly make it for you. So... yeah. TBH -- the more American-Chinese dishes aren't anything special. I had someone's General Tsao and it was way spicier than most (which was great) but really, really, goopy and sugary (which wasn't.) All in all, if you're adventurous, and you're tired of the same old American-Chinese I would give this place a run and I would actually avoid those items on the menu should you dine here. read more

This was by far the most disappointing Chinese meal I've had. The scallion pancakes barely had any scallions--maybe one piece in each--and when I mentioned it, the server insisted that's just how they prepare them. The vegetable lo mein was just as underwhelming, with only a small amount of carrots, scallions, and broccoli, lacking real flavor while somehow being overly salty. We also ordered the eggplant with basil, but the sauce was thick, overly sticky, and tasted more like sugar than anything else. I can't understand how this could be considered authentic. We got the: - Scallion Roasted Beef Pancake Roll: Definitely recommend getting this as an appetizer! The scallion pancake is super crispy with unbelievably tender beef inside & perfect amount of sweetness from the hoisin sauce. - Griddle Chicken with Mixed Vegetables: I've never eaten anything like this before, and absolutely loved it. Loved all the spices- cumin, fennel, doubanjiang- & the mala essence; the crispy, tender chicken; and the variety of vegetables, especially the lotus root. - Shrimp Ho-Fun: The shrimp were tender & the wide rice noodles have such a fun, bouncy texture; a flavorful dish. - Spicy Boiled Fish: The fish was super flaky; Taipei 101's version of this has a bit less mala flavor than I like, but this was still tasty. - Chinese Braised Pork: The pork was tender with a good amount of fat and I appreciated the bok choy, but it was a bit too sweet for me. The sesame chicken strikes that perfect balance of crispy, saucy, and savory without being overly sweet (its not overly 'bready' like most sesame chickens), and the ho fun noodles are comforting, well-seasoned, and loaded with flavor. You can tell the kitchen knows exactly what it's doing. What really makes Taipei 101 shine is how authentic the food feels at such a reasonable price point. Taipei 101 is in downtown Cary, and on a Saturday night it was tough to find parking. We ended up circling the on-street spots on the block a few times before ending up in the larger lot on Waldo & Walker (although we still had to tail folks who were leaving!). The restaurant itself also gets pretty busy, with a cluster of folks waiting for takeout orders just inside the door and large groups packed tightly in until you need to squeeze between chairs to get through. The staff's attitude and the layout of the restaurant nail the authentic feel. Come hungry and know exactly what you plan to order, and the dishes start flying out of the kitchen. There's a wide variety here with plenty of authentic dishes. The fan favorites are the Japanese style crispy tofu and cumin lamb; we also ordered mongolian beef, tripe, honey walnut shrimp, ma po tofu, bok choy and mushrooms, Singapore rice noodles, and chicken fried rice. The white rice is also complimentary and comes in a heaping bowl (rather than the ultra-common red rice container). The crispy tofu has been a hit every time and place I've tried it, so it was no surprise to me that our group enjoyed it so much. It was less crispy than in other variations (where it comes out sizzling still) but the texture difference with the smooth tofu inside was still great. I also really enjoyed our second tofu dish. I'm a huge fan of Singapore rice noodles, and these did the job fine. These varied slightly from the standard, which comes with pork. The noodles themselves were a bit too soft and with a lighter, more muted seasoning; even those who don't like curry could enjoy these. The fried rice also surprised me by being much more heavily colored by soy sauce than I'd expect, and generally was just average compared to some of the other dishes. Both carbs were served on plates the same size as everything else, so the ratio of portion size is slightly smaller than what I typically see. read more

This time the potatoes in the griddle chicken were sliced a little too thinly so almost was like chips but taste was We also tried their garlic pork this time (spicy) and pork egg roll! 4.5 I haven't been here in a long time and I have no idea why I haven't. The food was very good in the past and remains very good now. I can't speak to the Chinese-American dishes, but the traditional Chinese dishes are great. The spicy fish soup was the star. This large unassuming bowl was packed with thick chunks of mild fish filets, preserved vegetables, and bean thread noodles. The light broth, while definitely spicy, was not so spicy that it hid multiple layers of flavor. Two of us shared the fish and a plate of lotus root with pork belly and still left with a full quart of fish and broth. The service was warm and friendly with multiple servers checking in on us multiple times. The restaurant does not accept AMEX which is not unusual for Chinese restaurants. This being downtown Cary parking is a challenge. If you don't mind walking a few blocks, though, you should be fine. read more

The appetizers and the mains came at the same time, I don't like that as the mains get cold while you eat the appetizers. It's a delicious, tongue-numbing stir fry of beef, potato, lotus root, seaweed, and shrimp. It comes in a massive portion so be prepared to split it! If you're feeling like getting a smaller entree, their Cumin Lamb or Deep Fried Garlic Pork Ribs are also really good. Their Scallion Roasted Beef Pancake Roll, Boiled Chicken with Szechuan Chili Oil, and Beef Filet with Tripe are good for appetizers/sides. In my opinion, this is the best casual Chinese spot in the area. Their food never disappoints and the line is always out the door for a table when we come to eat or pick up an order. The restaurant stays busy and there's a good reason why. It's located in a great location in downtown Cary near other bars, ice cream spots, the park, a movie theater, and more if you want to grab dinner and do something after. My absolute favorite item here is the shrimp ho fun. It is soooo tasty and I get it every single time we order from here. Other favorites that we get is their general tso chicken and chicken and shrimp fried rice. I've gotten their chong qing spicy chicken a couple of times because it seems to be a popular dish there but it's just too crispy for me. Be sure to ask for the spice level you desire because we realize some food was coming out spicy if we didn't say we wanted it mild or medium. When I arrived at 6:15 there were a cluster of people waiting for their takeout. Some were given numbers, others QR codes. Clearly the staff did not monitor correctly because an hour later NO ONE HAD TAKEOUT FOOD. In the meantime, the RUDE woman acting as hostess with a yellow notepad kept seating people instead of getting the takeout situation under control. The food was ok/ good. And I would say that I came on a very busy-20 minute wait (no waiting area so you have to crowd the dining area - weird- or entry way) busy night. We ordered a soup to split (no small sizes) which was not very good-water with egg and salt. The main dishes were good, but the problem was the horrid service. They dropped our food with runners and never ever checked back. The appetizer was served 15 minutes after the main dishes which came up 8 minutes apart. The soup was served last? The food was good- 2 stars, but take-out would have proven more profitable. Also the Mapa tofu had soooo much Sichuan peppercorn that my mouth went numb and made the dish unpleasant to eat. Taipei 101, named after a 101-story skyscraper that was once the tallest building in the world in Taipei, Taiwan, is a consistent, authentic, and affordable Chinese food option in the triangle and worth the drive from Raleigh. The best thing to get is the "griddle chicken with vegetables" which despite its uneventful name is the miraculous skillet full of perfectly grilled chicken, lotus root, onion and maybe a few other vegetables. Wow, this dish stuns with a balanced spice element that, at least in this part of the world, is unique. It's shareable but also excellent as leftovers. Other fantastic dishes include the fried spicy fish which is just a lightly battered, fried white fish freckled in Szechuan pepper flakes. Served hot and crispy, the melt-in-your-mouth fish finishes with the spice that opens your whole maw, leaving you flush and satisfied, alive and invigorated but oh-so-comfortable. Even this dish is strangely good as leftovers on a bowl of rice. Also must-orders:  the hand-made xio long bao (soup dumplings AKA "pillows of happiness" as Bourdain once called them), scallion-roasted beef pancake roll which is a thick, folded pastry stuffed with thick cuts of steak and herby veg, and whatever green vegetables with garlic (I love when the snow pea shoots are available), the beef chow fun with healthy pieces of steak and well-seasoned flat noodles that aren't over-sauced or dripping in sodium. They serve a couple of beers, wines, and sakes too if you need a cold Tsingtao to wash it all down. No-frills basic restaurant with booths and tables inside, and if you're lucky you can find parking in the lot outside. The amount of food you get for the price is excellent but what beats everything is the taste and how often the staff walked by to make sure that we had everything we needed without being intrusive.!
