Another one bites the dust. Wish I had read all the recent reviews regarding change in ownership. Price to portion ratio is just not as good as it used to be. We were able to order some of our usual dishes but quality and flavor were lacking. Service was good. Ambiance unchanged. It's a standard Chinese restaurant...no frills because the food speaks for itself. Service was quick even though they were clearly shorthanded. Food was overall very good and well seasoned. I really liked the previous owners. I have been twice since the new owners took over, and I'm impressed. The pan fried dumplings are among the best this dumpling connoisseur has ever had. I got the Beef Chow Fun, a dish never before offered here. It was really tasty and a good portion size. This was our go to Chinese take out for years. We were told they changed menu and owners. We tried it for the first time since change last night. No more crispy chili beef on menu. We offered our usual Hunan Pork and beef and broccoli with pan fried dumplings. We were really trying to be hopeful. None of it was close to what we were used to prior to the change. The dumplings were expensive, undercooked and bland. The other dishes were also bland and watery. The pork and the beef was chewy. I guess we have to find a new Chinese take out. read more

So disappointed! Change of ownership & chef resulted in a new American Chinese menu. So sad. Many of our favorite dishes are no longer available. I tried the house pan fried noodles. Unfortunately, they tasted completely different, not in a good way. The Mapo Tofu which I always ask for "not too spicy" came out with a YELLOW. Never in my life have I been served YELLOW Mapo Tofu. We were told the new chef specializes in Szechuan food. Since I'm not partial to spicy dishes, I guess we'll have to find another spot. read more

Like some others here, Taipei Cafe has been our favorite Chinese takeout since we arrived in NC 11 years ago. Sadly, our experience last night has changed that. While the dishes we were wanting were all still available, the recipes had all changed and none were as good as we've always enjoyed. I suppose it may be time to find a new favorite. read more

I always order Peking duck to go from Taipei Cafe, it is not 100% authentic but good enough. The sauce is straight to the point, but the wrap is more like a tortilla instead of the flat bread for Peking duck. If you take it home and reheat it with air fryer, the duck skin becomes crunchy. And they get rid of the fatty part so the duck doesn't have the stinky flavor. The dining area is pretty small, but clean! They have a big round table, and couple small tables, their seat might be limited. read more

Taipei Café is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in the area. The food here is always tasty, and the menu is the most authentic that I have been able to find. My favorite dishes are the skillet chicken and the eggplant. The Skillet Chicken is a delicious pan-fried chicken with thinly sliced potatoes. The eggplant has a delicious chili garlic sauce. Everything is flavorful, and not overly greasy. The quality is exceptional and consistently good. One of my favorite parts is that they actually give you enough rice to enjoy your food, and do not skimp on it. This part makes all the difference to me. My only complaint is that it can be a little bit pricey for takeout. However, I will say it's well worth it for the quality and taste of the food. That's why Taipei Cafe is my go-to place for Chinese food. read more

We ordered two of our usual dishes for takeout, that we've been getting for the past 11 years, and they were very bland and they now skimp on the proteins. Came here for the first time and so glad we did. We got the general Tsos chicken. It was delicious and had a small kick. We also got the spicy beef tendon hotpot. This was delicious. It is the middle of summer but I imagine this tasting very good in the winter as well. The service was great. Our waitress was very sweet and fast. If you want to experience an authentic family-style ( not restaurant-style) cooking in Taiwan where I grew up. This is the place best in Cary. They can be very busy, so I have ordered out many times during my stay in Cary. Food was always ready when I arrived to pick up. Ordered from daily special - 香干马兰头 - this was very different from the dish that I had in NYC, it is a shanghainese dish. The main diff is the use soy sauce instead of usual salt and sesame oil. It's a bit on the salty side. I'd say 3 * 2. Salt and Peppe Crispy Fish Filet - very good texture. And just right about of flavor. 5 * per my son. :-) We asked for non-spicy version 3. Three Cup Chicken(三杯鸡)-very good and authentic flavor. I'd give 5 * for this dish. 4. Bean Curd skin with snow cabbage and soy bean(雪菜毛豆腐皮)-the appearance can be deceiving. The taste was good. Two of us went here for lunch, both of us first timers. We went after 1:00, so no problem getting a table. They have a large selection of lunch specials. You can get the special with your choice of fried rice or white rice, then choose an egg roll or a soup. You can also pay a little more and get both the egg roll and soup. I got chicken and shrimp with fried rice and wonton soup. The wonton soup was very good. I was glad to have ordered that. The chicken was chopped into very small pieces and there were a few small shrimp in a brown sauce. There were green peppers and some carrots with baby corn. It was just ok. I did bring some home and reheated it later. My friend got the sweet and sour shrimp with white rice and an egg roll. The egg roll looked good, was a good size and she said it was good. The shrimp, however, was very tough. She asked for a knife and tried to cut it, but could not. I thought she was over reacting, so I tried one of the shrimp. Wow, I have never had a tough shrimp before, but this was like a shrimp jerky. She left all the shrimp on her plate and ate the rice and sauce. Very disappointed. Taipei Cafe is a small Chinese restaurant located in a pretty random plaza off the side of the road. The entire venue has less than 10 tables and probably seats around 50 or so people, surprising given how popular they are. While we were enjoying our dinner there were constantly cars driving up to their side door to pick up orders. The best part of our experience was the servers. They gave us recommendations based on our regional palate, and even came back to ask if we wanted to strike a dish because they thought we ordered too much and wouldn't be able to finish. My water was refilled 3 times, which NEVER happens since I don't drink that much water during meals (I get distracted by the food). Even when I do, I drink extremely slowly. I'd say the food is mostly tasty but some things are probably more worthwhile than others. The vegetable and tofu soup was basically just blanched vegetables (minimal seasoning and no slurry), but the salt & pepper chicken was addicting. The green peppers were charred and blistered with hot oil, and tasted spicy and a little numb. The chicken was cubed into small pieces, fully absorbing the flavor of chillies and peppercorn. We even took the peppers home to use as a base for another stir fry. We also ordered a beef stew and fried pork ribs. I recommend smothering your rice with the beef stew sauce, don't waste it. The fried pork ribs were in long irregular chunks, reminding me of chicken tenders. They were really crunchy but had bone bits in them. I wish the ribs were cut in a regular way so you'd know where to expect the bone but I kinda just had to bite down and see. Otherwise the ribs were really crunchy and seasoned. My only complaint is the portion sizes. We were told that the stew and soup would be massive (for 5-6 people) but they really weren't... Also, the chicken dish seemed more like a pepper dish with chicken sprinkles inside - like a salad topped with bacon bits. Some menu items are a bit hit or miss. read more

I have a feeling there is a different Taipei Cafe hidden amidst the I visited, but you need to read Chinese to be able to access it. We were given the lunch menu, I asked about any Taiwanese specialties, we were given the dinner menu, opened to the chef's specialties. But what I was really interested in was what was written in Chinese on the whiteboard. I'm pretty sure that wasn't listed anywhere else. Because I saw Yelp reviews discussing things like salted egg yolk fish filet, beef or spicy fish hotpot, special duck dish, etc... but none of these were to be found on the chef's special menu. I was a little discouraged by this and just decided to order some kung pao shrimp for the lunch special deal. Kung pao shrimp, while a mainstay on Americanized Chinese menus, is one of the few things that fits that category but can also be found in China, and I really like it when it's done right. Taipei Cafe's was decent. A little sweet, but to be expected, and there were plenty of shrimp, green peppers, water chestnuts, and peanuts. It was surprisingly spicy as well (it's supposed to be, but often the more Americanized versions omit that part). The wonton soup tasted like it was from an instant packet and the fried wontons were somehow sweet too even though they're basically just fried dough. This is one of those rare two star reviews where I plan to go back, and with a Chinese speaker if I can swing it - I really want to know what's on that whiteboard menu! I've been here a couple of times before, and on this day we had lunch inside. Ordering family style, we had the pork intestine and tofu in a simmering pot, pork with dry bean curd, and fish fillet with cabbage and tofu. All three were delicious and authentic to where my mother-in-law from Taiwan gave it her approval. The only drawback was that we had to pay $1 each for hot tea, which is not all that customary in a typical Taiwanese or Chinese restaurant, but the food was delicious enough to overlook it. read more

This is a small family-run Chinese restaurant with some good food and good service. My family came and we tried a handful of dishes: Salt and pepper pork - This dish had good flavor, was nice and crispy on the outside and had tender meat on the inside. Some pieces had bones, so I had to pick some of the meat off for my kids, but they loved it, as did I. Seafood pan fried noodles - This dish was also done well - it had an excellent variety of seafood, great flavor, and sufficient crispy noodles to accompany. Pea shoots (dou miao) - This standard dish wasn't flashy, but also wasn't overly oily or salty, which I appreciated. "Eight treasure bean curd" (tofu bao) - Basically, it was a stone pot with a lot of different things mixed inside - BBQ pork, chicken, seafood, veggies - all combined in a gravy-like sauce. I thought this was done particularly well - not too heavy, but with just the right flavors. Fish filet with wood ear mushrooms - This dish was a little too sweet for my liking, but the fish was very tender. The server was incredibly nice and even gave my daughters some coloring sheets and crayons to keep them occupied while we ate. Giving it 4 stars instead of 3 because the service that we received was definitely top notch. We had a lot of questions about the dishes, and our server kindly explained each one to us. We got a bunch of stuff, including fish filet with veggies, potato strips, eggplant hot pot, beef stew and lamb stew. The lamb and the potato strips were the best, I think. The eggplant and beef stews didn't have enough punch of a flavor. It's almost like the flavor was brushed on top, and didn't really sink into the food itself. I'd highly recommend them cooking the beef with more star anise and for longer. It felt like it was either stewed too short or they skimped on the spices. I was a little miffed about how little fish was on the plate given the price. It hardly filled the plate, and sort of slid around it. I have had my initial visit for this place in 2019 but I was hesitant to write a review because I have had heard mixed reviews from friends who dined in this place. This place definitely has some different styles of Chinese fusion to it, but like it's name had suggested, the food it served definitely leans towards the Taiwanese style. I have had some good dine in experience here: - the duck is a must try when you have a party of 2~3+ - the dishes on white board are decent choices for those who likes authentic Chinese food. But in contrast, the take outs and deliveries I had with this place were very inconsistent. Edible but definitely not 4 stars worthy. So taking everything into consideration, solid 3.5. Taipei Café is one of the newer Chinese restaurants in the area and definitely has the potential to become a future hit. This restaurant is in a small strip mall on Chapel Hill Rd, which actually isn't really noticeable if you are not paying attention to the road. The first thing you realize when you walk into the restaurant is that it is so small! I have had past experiences where it was really crowded, but I have not had any problems with getting a table. This place deserves 5 stars because of the food. The dishes that we ordered was a lotus with Chinese bacon dish, a fish and tofu dish, and shredded pork dish. The lotus was a special that day and it was the first time I had eaten lotus and enjoyed it a lot. The Chinese bacon is homemade and definitely added a lot more flavor to the lotus. The fish I can get in a lot of Chinese restaurants and I get it everywhere because it is sooo good!!! The way that the fish is sautéed, and then stewed gives the fish a soft texture and there is a ton of gravy that I can add to my rice. The shredded pork had good flavors and it was cooked perfectly. Not too tough, but not undercooked. Taipei Café is a great addition to Morrisville and this area because they make great Chinese food! read more

I was extremely DISAPPOINTED last time I went there for takeout because the waiter was very RUDE. I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE you to get TAKEOUTS ELSEWHERE. After placing my order, I found a place to sit and wait just like the customer ahead of me in line. That customer however, got his food pretty quickly. While I kept waiting, there are dine in customers who would like to sit at the table I was at...I was being nice and moved to other area waiting for my take out to be ready. Now, folks. I moved TWICE. However, the second time I moved, that waiter (might be owner's relative) was really upset and said, "Don't hold us back from doing our business". I don't understand, does that mean takeouts are not part of your business? I would never go back to any places if the waiters there have this kind of attitude. read more
