On a major dumpling kick, my fiance and I wanted to stuff our faces with delicious, authentic Chinese on a recent trip to the Triangle. Taipei 101's extensive and ostensibly legit menu of Taiwanese and Sichuan fare (including xia long bao) allured us, so we chose it for a quick lunch while out running errands. We hungrily ordered three appetizers (soup dumplings, scallion pancakes, and pan fried dumplings) and cumin lamb to share. The squat soup dumplings we received unfortunately did not resemble the plump beauties other Yelpers have posted on here. The soup content, too, varied from abundant to minimal. Nonetheless, the skins had a pleasantly chewy texture and the filling packed plenty of flavor. These will not compare to the soup dumplings you get in major metro Chinatowns, but they satisfied the craving nonetheless. Our scallion pancakes were crisp and light, and thus great for absent minded munching with the tangy dumpling sauce. Homemade pan fried potstickers arrived thick and juicy with doughy, hearty skins and a flavorful pork filling that ended up being our favorite among the apps we ordered. Our main course, cumin lamb, brought a generous helping of tender slices of lamb paired with the pungent flavors of cumin, dried chili, and cilantro. This dish had tons of flavor and sated our need for spice. Service was efficient and friendly, and our meal was not pricey. If you're in the mood for authentic Chinese in the Triangle, Taipei 101 should satisfy your needs for solid dumplings and spicy stir fries. read more

Really great time here! Not gonna lie, I'm no expert in Taiwanese food but I really enjoyed my experience here. Came in with some friends and tried a few of the options. Service was fast, friendly, and efficient! We tried the beef scallion and it was great! We also had dry pot that was great as well. The Singaporean noodles were probably my favorite item that we had, and I really enjoyed the curry flavor. The green beans were also super solid. I will say that I wasn't a massive fan of the chicken we ordered, but I think that's personal preference. Overall good experience with an amazing price tag. read more

It's always difficult to go to have Chinese food when you're a party of one. But I ordered the braised pork with some steamed rice and it was pretty darn satisfying. I believe this is a Hakka-style dish that I try anytime I see it on the menu. For those who don't mind the pork belly (fat to meat ratio), this dish is sinfully tasty and tender, braised in a sweetened, seasoned, soy sauce base, with tender bok choy greens on the bottom. Waitresses are fast, busy, but friendly. I think I need to bring some friends so I can try more menu items. Authentic food I can appreciate. read more

Went there at 11 AM for lunch snd ordered fried rice with Chinese sausage and 2 appetizers (the beef tendon and beef with tripe). The Fried rice was really good but the two appetizers were cold (I am not sure if this is how they should be traditionally served but they don't taste good to me even if they were). The beef tendon was shaved versus the normal cuts you find in other authentic Chinese restaurants. My favorites are the braised pork shoulder, which is a LARGE portion of delectable and tender braised pork, and the beef scallion pancake, which is a savory and crispy pancake with thinly sliced beef and hoisin sauce. All other dishes I've tried have also been tasty and authentic - if you want to add some veggies to your meal, the sauteed green bean dish is a good option, or if you want a little more protein, the peking duck is excellent. I. Love. Stinky. Tofu. This place has it but it misses a little something. Tad bland, IMO. The shrimp dumplings, same. Bland. Sauce was a dark soy and the flavor was off. Hot sauce saved the day. The beef noodles, a Taiwanese staple, was very disappointing. Wrong noodles, broth was lacking flavor, bok choi(?) and no pickled side to add? Definitely not a great version. The shrimp salt pepper was good, whole gulf shrimp, unshelled, dissolves with each bite. No peeling required, it was very good. At the end we ordered a beef casserole (niu nan bao) which is one of my favorite entrees. It was very flavorful, tender meet, bok choi at the bottom has no sauce so that was a little strange but overall very tasty. Our neighboring table ordered the beef casserole but as pork (pork belly) and we swapped plates to share. We both agreed the beef was better as the pork was sweet. Have been going to this place since the previous owner owned it and was serving actual Taiwanese food. In recent time the food portion size has shrunk, price gone up, and overall quality is no longer what it used to be. My last visit for my wife's birthday encountered one of the rudest server there. When asking what we wanted to drink, while we're trying to figure out the server made a comment on "just tell me what you want to drink now and don't make it complicated". When we weren't quite done eating, server came back again and asked if we were done. After telling her no. She came back again not five minutes later asking if we're ready for the check and how many boxes I needed. Talking to a few friends and my parents who also frequent the place I've heard similar feedback about both food and service. read more

I have had many carry out meals from this restaurant since moving to downtown Cary a few months ago. I wish they were open slightly later in the evening (I think they close at 8 PM) but other than that, they are terrific. I have ordered simple dishes like pork fried rice, as well as steamed dumplings, hot and sour soup, stir fried vegetables and chicken, shrimp or tofu, and dishes like Kung Pao Chicken have all been excellent. I think they are now doing some very limited dining in service, but I have only done carry out. Their protocols for handling orders during the pandemic are very strong, and they are very prompt and efficient. Portions are very good and quality is excellent. I like to judge restaurants like this by how they prepare very basic dishes and I can tell you that when I have ordered pork fried rice, it is amazing compared to the typical "order off the picture menu" Chinese places that you will find in most strip malls. I have a work colleague who is Chinese and whose parents emigrated from China and operated restaurants and she has told me Taipei 101 is one of the most authentic places in the area. The location is great, right in the heart of downtown Cary. This is a rock solid, "can't miss" choice when you are craving good Chinese food that is a cut way above the cookie cutter "A #1 China" strip mall restaurants. Ate twice here this week. The evening meal was great with Cumin Lamb, Fried Chinese Ribs and fry fried green beans. The lamb and the beans were excellent. The ribs were good but there must be a technique for eating them that I don't know. Lots of bones. The place was busy on weeknight and most patrons looked like they might be Chinese, a good sign. The lunch visit was a contrast. We got ma po tofu and kung pao chicken, two offerings on nearly every Chinese menu I have ever seen. Those were disappointing. No vegetables and the kung pao was very sweet. I enjoyed the touch of prickly ash in the tofu. I really don't know what to expect when I order those two dishes. Maybe it is more traditional to order those with a vegetable dish. I have had the kung pao with some diced veggies and that seems preferable to me. read more

We certainly were not blown away with our lunch visit today. The restaurant is rather worn looking, inside and out, and very few lights were on, making the entire restaurant rather dark and a bit gloomy. There was a communal table where a hand full of employees were eating, rather noisily, and the table we were shown to was sticky and had to be cleaned. When we ready to order, 3 of the dishes I wanted to try were not available - Double Cooked Pork Belly, Wontons In Hot Oil, and Salt & Pepper Pork Chops, which was really disappointing. We ended up ordering Scallion Pancakes, Black Pepper Chicken, Salt & Pepper Squid, and Scallion Beef. The Scallion Pancakes came out first, and though the flavor was decent, the crispness was inconsistent, and they were very greasy. The entrees followed in short order (time for the order out of the kitchen was amazing, but in the final analysis, I'm not sure that was such a good thing). There was a single, small bowl of white rice accompanying the 3 entrees. The Salt & Pepper Squid was very disappointing, very thick breading (they reminded me of pale Cheese Doodles), and no real flavor - you could not taste the squid, and there was no hint of either salt or pepper. The pieces of chicken in the Black Pepper Chicken dish were very tasty, and there was a bit of residual heat, but the dish contained too much in the way of vegetables - Red & Green Peppers, and Broccoli. The Scallion Beef was a nice dish generally, but a bit under seasoned for my taste, and I actually had to add salt. The service was excellent, and the portion sizes (other than the white rice) were more than adequate, but the nearly $50 price tag was a bit steep for the quality served up. Perhaps if my initial choices had been available, I would feel differently about this meal, this restaurant - after this meal, I would not put it in the same class as Gourmet Kingdom, C&T Wok, Super Wok, or even China Palace in Durham. read more

This was very close to food that is served in Taiwan. Believe me that is hard to find. One clear sign was that the Chinese characters were in traditional NOT simplified so I knew that it was going to be a good experience. 1) I was very happy with all of the dishes we ate. The first one was XLB. It was very good and very hot. I enjoyed it greatly. Finding good XLB in the US outside of NYC or California is very hard. So if you are in NC, this might help all of those XLB cravings. 2) The second thing we ordered was the Chong Qing Chicken. A warning: if you have never eaten Sichuan cuisine before be careful. This is very spicy. It will make you sweat. On the other hand if you are used to that like I am, this is a great dish for you. 3) The last dish we ordered was the "dry hot pot". It came out and was good. It was more like a stir fry with extra hot oil buy it was great. Again this is very spicy, if it is your first time having it you have been warned ;p 4)The service is good. The staff speak both Chinese and English. Also everyone on the staff is nice. Our waitress was very patient with us and very helpful in helping us pick what we wanted to eat. 5) My only two complaints are that the parking lot can be cramped and my stomach is too small to eat the whole menu. read more

First time going and the food was really good until the shrimp dumplings came out. The shrimp smelled bad and I had to spit it out! I told our server and I guess she thought I don't eat a lot of shrimp. I do and know what good vs bad shrimp is. She left it on the bill. Fresh and delicious. It's our go to in downtown Cary. Lots of choices for vegetarian's and meat lovers alike.

A close relative recommended this restaurant for great authentic Chinese fare but also warned that non Chinese speaking patrons might be treated differently. Indeed, that's how it played out. I didn't get upset at their unresponsive service but I did go behind the counter to get our chopsticks and repeatedly approached the staff including to order our dinner, provide sauce for our fried pork dumplings, to remember my wife's beef and broccoli which they read back to us when we first ordered but never placed it with the cook, to get leftover carryout containers, and to give us our check after we finished. Having said that the food was pretty great. My mushroom and bamboo shoot soup was perfect, and my Singapore noodles with shrimp were excellent. My grandson's child menu chicken with broccoli was fine. My wife's beef with broccoli was rated as boring by her, although I liked it. read more

Hands down my and my husband's favorite Chinese restaurant in the Triangle. We go at least 2x a month and ALWAYS order the chongqing chicken boneless. It is so so so good. Crispy and extremely flavorful, with the perfect amount of szechuan spice. Other staples we usually end up getting: spicy fish fillets in szechuan broth, the garlic eggplant dish, shrimp hargow, glass noodles with ground pork, dan dan noodles, and the xiao long bao (soup dumplings)! Everything is great. I have not had one bad dish here so far. You also know this place is legit because on weekends, it is packed to the brim with Chinese patrons. Pro tip: park along the train tracks on the road behind the restaurant if you can't find parking in the small lot. read more

Was recommended to come here by a friend and would first definitely suggest going with at least a party of three because you will want to get many different items and share family style! We came here on a Friday night and it was pretty busy but did not have to wait for a table. We got the eggplant and basil (which was not spicy - get the eggplant in garlic sauce if you want spicy), scallion pancakes with beef (my favorite), beijing duck with bao buns, spicy crispy fish (super delicious), pork soup dumplings (okay), and agedashi tofu (garlicky and silky tofu). Service is quick and it comes hot and as ready. There was three of us and we had a good amount of leftovers left, though we did get a lot of food. They close kind of early even on the weekends (9:30pm), but there's a parking lot and located in the heart of downtown Cary. There's a bunch of bars and a gelato shop across the street so you can make a night of it if you are not from the area. Will definitely come again and get different items each time...but will always get the tofu - that's a must-have dish! read more
