Came by Thursday night right before 6pm for a table of two. We were seated promptly, but the place was already quite packed. While they do have a parking lot, it is shared with other occupants and was at capacity when we went. Luckily, as we are in the hood, we just walked.
Upon entrance is where they make drinks which makes sense, as you can quickly grab a drink to go. The space overall was inviting, modern, with cool/cute décor. The painted wall art with the animated food was fun to see.
My dad and I ordered the oyster omelette, rice tower, two DanZai noodles, mango shaved snow, and a jasmine green milk tea.
Let's first talk about the positives. Their drinks are great, much better than KungFu tea. I love the ability to customize the sugar and ice levels, so with mine, I got no sugar, no ice, with grass jelly topping. I enjoyed this very much. The shaved snow was pretty good, except the fresh accompanied mango pieces were on the tart side. The addition of the milky pudding was a nice treat. The DanZai noodles were tasty and came out piping hot, which is always a good sign. The large shrimp was not overcooked (though I did eat this first before it continued to cook). I liked the use of Chinese chives. The ground meat was also flavorful and the egg was properly seasoned. The broth was light but still tasty and their noodles were very good. The oyster omelette was good and different with a unique thin egg/flour batter. I also rather enjoyed the rice tower which had meat on top of sticky rice. This had a nice sweet but peppery flavor to it.
Now, to everyone's complaint that I also unfortunately experienced: their service. We ordered my drink and apps well before our noodles. Our oyster omelette was given wrongly to the next table who didn't even order it. Our main server was bantering with the other girl who messed this up, but knowingly, they didn't acknowledge anything. The other table kept and ate our dish, as we waited for our new one. We saw it come our way after already finishing our noodles, but another table fought for it, claiming it was theirs, even though they were seated well after us. The server obliged and he gave it to them. I inquired about still waiting on our two apps at this time, and while our server was nice and came back to clear our tables, didn't mention anything about the timing of our apps. Luckily, they came shortly after, but didn't really get much of an apology, as I don't think anyone really knew what was going on.
Throughout this whole experience, several of the servers gave wrong orders to various tables, among many other issues. While they seemed to be well staffed in quantity, no one really came by to check on the tables, unless you asked first, in which they were definitely nice and genuine then. A plus, they did seem to know the menu well as they were able to explain and give recommendations, but a nearby table was annoyed (I would be too) that they were out of quite a few things. Overall, they all need some serious training and the manager should be on top of it. Their service was bad, even for casual Chinese restaurant standards. Props to the chef/kitchen though, as food coming out timely didn't seem to be the problem.
While I am not accustomed to Taiwanese food, many of their items do seem to be quite traditional, so don't come here expecting popular items you'd find in Chinatown, let alone crab rangoon and orange chicken. While my pops' bias lies with Cantonese cuisine, he actually enjoyed their food. I agree, as I sincerely thought each item we got was pretty good. Since it is café style, dishes are supposed to be on the small side, with their menu featuring mostly apps and sides, along with quick rice/noodle dishes. You're not going to get bang for your buck here, but pricing is appropriate. There is definitely a market for this, as I could see myself back in the day hanging out here all the time with friends after school and grabbing some snacks and milk teas. I welcome the addition to the B-Port hood, just hopefully the service improves. I would like to come back and try some other food items, but definitely for their many drink options. read more
