Tuna tartare appetizer is pretty good

We initially planned on grabbing malatang, but the line was far too long. Wifey was craving ramen, and Taishoken saved the day. While the kids still got a classic ramen, we adults went adventurous with soup-less ramen. Food (4 stars) + Mazesoba soup-less ramen was good but not as impressive as their other soup-less option. The egg that you mix in upon arrival gave it a carbonara vibe, and the chashu was tasty. There were lots of bamboo shoots that I originally thought were mushrooms. The sauce/seasoning of the ramen has a bit fishy flavor, which my wife didn't love, but still pretty good. I actually prefer the other soup-less ramen. - Chicken karaage (small order, $7) had a light batter and was freshly cooked. Standard, but enjoyable. Service/Ambiance (same as before) + Service remained excellent, with the waitress explaining dishes in detail. + The food came out incredibly fast--kid's ramen was like instantly, appetizer in about 3 minutes, and entrées in less than 10 minutes. + The ambiance still evokes a warm, Japanese feel.

I'd say skip it overall. The noodles were too al dente, and the dipping broth wasn't anything particularly memorable. Honestly, I feel like I could recreate something similar pretty easily using kits from a Japanese market. The karaage, though, was super crispy and really good. If you go, I'd recommend just getting one dipping noodle dish to share and ordering a bunch of appetizers instead -- otherwise it ends up being way too much noodle. Or go to Tsujita

Good, solid tsukemen and ramen shop. Its in a big strip mall so easy parking. Had reservations but the place was maybe 1/2 full. 3 of us had tsukemen and 2 had ramen. Also calamari appetizer and karaage chicken. The calamari was fantastic - lightly breaded and perfectly cooked. The tsukemen was very good. Ramen and karaage was OK. Good service. Prices $18-$20. Overall a solid choice.

My friends and I stopped by Taishoken on a Saturday around 12:30 p.m. for lunch and the restaurant was surprisingly empty. Our party of four was able to get seated right away. Although Taishoken is known for their tsukemen, I'll always opt for mazesoba if I see it on a menu. The mazesoba here is easily some of the best I've had in the Bay Area. The included piece of chashu is well-seasoned, fall apart tender and had a good balance of lean to fatty meat. The noodles are cooked to perfection and have a really nice chew to them. There is just the right amount of sauce in the dish, and the raw egg yolk adds a wonderful richness that coats each strand of noodle when mixed. Included with your mazesoba is a small side of vinegar. I would definitely recommend trying out the mixed mazesoba on its own -- without the vinegar, and adding in the vinegar about half-way in in order to try out a completely different flavor profile of the noodles. The acidity of the vinegar cuts through the richness and keeps you coming back for bite after bite. If you've never tried mazesoba before, I can't recommend it enough at Taishoken. I can't wait to stop by again for another bowl.

I was actually thinking of making the trip to their San Mateo store, luckily this one opened up that's way closer! Fantastic tsuekemen at fair pricing and speedy service that's on point. Very relaxed atmosphere with a pretty clean interior. Notably different from a lot of other places, they serve buckwheat noodles for their tsukemen. Quite fragrant and solid chew. Heavenly pork, supremely soft and melts in your mouth. Broth served piping hot as it should. Very rich yet well balanced, leaning heavily on dashi/seafood aroma for their broth. I'm quite the fan! Aburasoba is also really good, punchy flavor with lot of depth. My brother is hard to please and he's also quite excited about this place (there aren't many that do aburasoba well either). Chicken karaage is lightly battered, with kewpie mayo. Not too heavy and a good complement to the noodles. Absolutely returning customer here!

Very solid Tsukemen. I went here recently with my two homies for the first time. All of us went to Japan a year ago and there was this one place with Tsukemen Ramen at Tokyo Station. It was the best ramen I've ever had in my life. Ever since that day Ive wanted to try other places that do that same style thats why all of us ended up at Taishoken. We ordered a Karaage appetizer to start which was pretty yummy. Then we all ordered our own bowls of Tsukemen. This was pretty good. I loved the flavor of the broth and all the fixings were prepped perfectly. However even after every tasty bite there was still a small part of me that yearned for that first experience I had in Japan. Despite that I still scratched the itch and I would 100% come back if I had peeps who wanted to get some good ramen in the area.

Fantastic ambiance. Our family of 9 went to try this place on a Saturday around 530pm. Clean modern seating and kid friendly! They have kid friendly plates, utensils as well menu items. The squid appetizer is very tasty and I haven't seen the type of seasoning anywhere else. I enjoyed my ramen too. Typically I like the thicker noodle but my ramen came with the thin one and there's no substitutions. Food came quickly and staff are very friendly.

The prices are a little bit high here, typically low $20. The food is good here but I usually hope for a little bit more meat. I'm assuming the price is because of the noodle, which has very nice texture and is done well. I usually get the most popular item, the Tokusei Tsukemen (which is good) but I tried their Duck Tsukemen. It came with 4 pieces of duck that were soft but kind of hard to tear apart. The noodles are good and the accompanied broth is quite light. My only issue is that the lime in the soup was overpowering and I didn't taste much of the chicken in the soup. Everything was still great in all and the servers are very nice.

Again Taishoken never disappoints! My partner decided to get the Kamo Shoyu Tsukemen which is a new item. It was a nice light refreshing broth with a hint of citrus, if you're looking for a lighter meal I'd totally recommend it. If you're looking for bouncy, rich, and savory noodles you can never go wrong with the Tokusei Tsukemen! Quality is always consistent and delicious.

Decided to stop by for some ramen and I am not the biggest fan of ramen, but it was pretty tasty! For the price, I would say it comes with a generous amount. It was fairly busy, but all the staff was helpful when we needed something.

My fave restaurant to revisit for a yummy meal :) I like that the proportions are very generous and consistently delicious! I've tried both their tsukemen dipping ramen spicy and non-spicy. Next time, I'm curious on trying more appetizers. I saw the tables around me order an assortment of them, and they all look so visually aesthetic and appetizing! Service is quick and attentive. Plenty of parking in a plaza parking lot, although it tends to get busy since it is a popular shopping plaza!I

Tsukemen with 2 pieces of extra chashu
    Vivian L.

Came with a friend on Sunday around 1 and was seated pretty quickly. Food is very filling but I do find it a bit pricey that the tsukemen is already $18 but only comes with 1 piece of chashu. Also I didn't realize it till later but I was charged for 2 pieces of extra chashu when I only received 1 extra piece (the only reason I do have 3 pieces in the picture is because my friend gave me her piece, not something worth complaining about since it was just $2 but just something to tell the cooks to look at the orders more carefully). Ambiance was very relaxed and easy to hear the staff when ordering and when me and my friend were talking.

Taishoken is famous for its tsukemen, and it lives up to the hype. The cold, chewy noodles are served separately so you can dip them into a rich broth that's thick, savory, and satisfying. It's fun to eat, filling, and a nice change of pace if you want something with a little more bite and texture than regular ramen. Their tonkotsu ramen is also a great option. The broth is creamy and comforting, the pork is tender, and the boiled egg is well prepared timing-wise; perhaps a little cold. It's tasty and perfect if you want a warm, cozy bowl without having to think too hard about it. Service is pretty decent and inside the restaurant is sophisticatedly nice. From the signage I learned the recipe originated in 1951. Generally a good parking situation because there's a huge lot, but this 'Ranch 99' area can get quite packed at times.
